Father Death chimes in on Nazi Zombies in DEAD SNOW!

Published at:  Jan 25, 2009 4:19:50 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with our old time Sundance contributor, Father Death, with a look at DEAD SNOW, a film I'm so happy that IFC picked up and that I can not wait to see for myself! Here's his review...

Hey again,

I took a break from college study and went to check out DEAD SNOW screening. I got in wait list line way early and was lucky to have gotten number 2 wait list ticket. This movie was a hot ticket thanks to word of mouth, and it definitely met the expectation and hype.

DEAD SNOW is a re-invention of the zombie horror genre that reanimates the "tired" zombie genre. To say anymore about the movie would be spoiling the story, which is part of the fun.

Think Resident Evil meets The Thing crossed with Night of the Living Dead and 70's Nazi exploitation movies. The movie is so gory with gallons of blood and ripped organs I don't think it will garner an R rating without heavy cuts.

IFC made a wise investment. I hope they leave the original Norwegian language with English subtitles intact and the whole movie uncut, unlike what happened to HAUTE TENSION theatrical release under Lion's Gates.

DEAD SNOW is sure to be a big hit when it hits the theatres sometime this year. It may be the only decent horror movie to be released in North American theatres this year amid crappy American horror movies.

I cannot recommend the movie highly enough! Black comedy, rad plot (even if we've seen it before, but Nazi zombies? Cool!) and gore effects DEAD SNOW gives it a genuine "grindhouse" feel. I'm sure Quentin, Eli and company will enjoy this a lot.

Tommy Wirkola is a talent to watch out for, because, while the film may border on excess that would make casual moviegoers feel ill (particularly the long shot of a graphic self-surgery involving fishing hook -- that gave the audience audible icky groan), he made a competent North European horror film with unusually high production values, great plot, viscerally nauseating gore and scarily realistic Nazi Zombie F/X effects.

TREEVENGE, a 17-minute horror-comedy short preceding the movie, is worth watching, if only for its hilarity in "disturbing horror" satire like SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT. Well-done, sick gore effects towards the ending. I think the short should come with DEAD SNOW when IFC releases it in theatre to give it a fresh grindhouse effect for the hardened horror fans.

I'd give it a B-

Go see DEAD SNOW if you can "stomach" it. Adieu!

Most optimistic line from this review 'Dead Snow is sure to be a big hit when it hits the theatres'. Hmmm.. a low budget subtitled Norwegian movie about Nazi zombies. I mean, it sounds pretty cool to me but I can't imagine it's going to trouble TRANSFORMERS 2 at the box office.

A SNOW song in a movie with a snow title would have been cool. Although his small live performance in KLASH was interesting.

    Fast zombies

I think I remember hearing that the director decided on faster Zombies, because of all the trudging through the snow.

Was this a rave review that ended in a B-? Admittedly I am tired so maybe I missed something. There are some fun sentences in this review. Possibly written by a surviving Nazi zombie....

Welcome to the Politically Correct Grindhouse

    by man in suit

I like that the director thinks he's edgy because he's using Nazi zombies. If this were grindhouse with balls, the zombies would be Islamic fascists recently released from Guantanamo.

Is the "Tree" in Treevenge angry about global warming or "big business" lumberjacks? Or maybe it's a gay tree angry about Prop 8?

Grindhouse at Sundance. You gotta love it.

    by password.swordfish

One of our local theatres ran Treevenge before a midnight screening of the Shining a couple of months ago. It is a total blast, and somehow still manages to shock and horrify (one specific kill near the end - so wrong and yet so awesome). Definitely recommended to gore fans.

    Easily Impressed? misguided review

    by astro1

I happened to catch Dead Snow last night for a Sundance screening at the Broadway Theatre in Salt Lake City...first - the movie in no way redefines the genre...at all...by any stretch of the imagination. It's nothing more than a comedy disguised as a horror film. That's not to say it sucked, because it's actually pretty funny and pretty well executed, but it's really just a homage to zombie films in genre and the whole Nazi element is almost irelevant because it's hardly even played up on. They should have at least had a zombie that looked like Hitler, or had Zombies doing the Hail Hitler motion..but none of that. Still it's a pretty satisfying horror/comedy...but it will NOT BE A hit in the US...not at all..

    With that said

    Dead Snow > Planet Terror.

This is FD. As for "misguided". 28 Days Later... redefined the zombie genre by reviving the "visceral horror" element lost to post-Scream garbage. I thought 28 Weeks Later, despite plot holes, is an excellent movie for this reason. I haven't bothered to see any Resident Evil movies or even George Romero's recent movies Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead. I should note that while I gave it a B-, I neglected to state there is a tone shift from comedy to horror and back, which is kind of jarring that might not give the movie the "edge" it should have in terms of psychological tension. I thought the movie is a good effort overall despite this flaw. We'll see how Dead Snow pans out in limited theatrical release this year. I was there at Broadway screening as well. Planet Terror is a paltry half of Grindhouse, but Death Proof is the worst QT movie so far. Dead Snow has that real "grindhouse" quality to satisfy horror fans, even if it has some comedy in it like Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz. Intentionally funny scenes (like amputation scene) in a horror-comedy will help increase the box office appeal despite over-the-top gore effects. I don't know if word of mouth has ever been favorable as a contributing factor to *gory* horror movies. SAW series isn't a good example to measure box office intake; it's already an established franchise after the first made its stake.
As an aside, Nazi villainy is a frequent target of ridicule and contempt in movies. This time as zombies so that adds to the appeal. I am and will always remain a jaded horror fan still awaiting the next great psychological horror movie that hasn't terrified me since RINGU. I'm not into Fangoria-type films but Dead Snow is an interesting foreign movie that IMO could do without irritating movie references and comedy for a "scary-horror" feel.

What a load of shit. I kept thinking "Mercs vs Nazi Zombies? They simply CANNOT fuck this up, right? RIGHT?" Well, they could, and they did.

Y'know, I grew up with DC's Weird War Tales, and even though I loved the stories I always felt a bit disappointed that they NEVER lived up to the truly awesome covers on the comics. I keep getting the same vibe when I see these war horror movies -- why is it so fucking hard to live up to the premise or the goddamn movie poster/DVD sleeve? Even remotely?

    Indy V

    by enderandrew

Indy V, written by Lucas and directed by Uwe Boll. Set years before Indy IV, Indy is hunting down supernatural Nazi super-soldiers, and is turned into a vampire. He enlists the aid of Bloodrayne, a bisexual vampire who hunts Nazis, and doesn't like to wear clothes. Together they decide to hunt down a religious artifact that can turn Indy into a human again, but Zombie Hitler (the world thinks he is dead) is hiding the artifact on his moonbase. Zombie Hitler is on the moon because he doesn't need to breath, and he is hiding from Cylons. Indy and Bloodrayne must use the Stargate to get there, and try to break into Cheyenne Mountain, where they are arrested by Mulder and Scully, who aren't even born yet, except in the Triangle episode of the X-Files, they went to WWII era via the Bermuda Triangle. That is where the Cloverfield monster pops out of the water and threatens to destroy the world with an Emmerich film, but Indy kicks his punk ass.
