Even More Pics Of Even More Toys From J.J.'s STAR TREK Reveal Even More About The Film's Design!!

Published at:  Jan 23, 2009 10:34:32 AM CST

Merrick here...

Yesterday, we got a look at a batch of photos which revealed Playmate's toy line from Abrams' new STAR TREK movie. You can find those HERE.

Turns out, there's even more toy photos drifting around flickr, including a communicator whose flip up visor is apparently a view screen (i.e. the communicators are video phones now), a silvery FLASH GORDON-ish phaser, a Tricorder that actually looks like a Tricorder (instead of the pepper grinder/sex tool we see pictured HERE), and bad guy ship which looks like a Porcupine that got squished by several pickup trucks.

You can find all of the images, and more (including better views of older Spock's costume, a profile of the Enterprise toy, etc.) ...

HERE!!!

Use the little nav window to the right side of the screen to scroll around - you'll find new/interesting material in both directions.

Surely kids don't give a fuck about the Alias guy making a Star Trek movie, and collectors aren't going to buy shoddy looking toss like that.

    I'm cautiously optimistic.

    by iamnicksaicnsn

Much in the same way I am about the Obama Administration! But seriously, this is the kind of movie where you can't possibly know what it's going to be like until you see it. And it's pretty clear what the plot is going to be, even from the little bits and pieces and pictures and whatnot we've seen, and that's disconcerting.

They shouldn't have brought this back. It belongs in the 60's and that's where it should have stayed. Hardcore fans aren't going to accept anyone other than Shatner as Kirk, and teens these days are going to think it's embarrassing.

My little cousin seemed pretty interested in the movie, and he's never been a Star Trek fan of any kind and he's 13. Not that any good Trek has come out in his aware-life-time.

They are really cheap ($17.xx), and the pictures might be from prototypes. The prop itself may not have much more detail than the toys. We'll see what they are like when actually released.

    The Dark Knight of 2009

    by emperor_was_a_jerk

I am not saying that Star Trek will be as good, but that they are looking to make a movie. A movie that stands alone, that is fun to watch and goes past all the Trek nerd crap of the past 40 years. Dark Knight was not a movie just for comic book geeks, looks like that is the direction they are going for the Trek movie. Let go of the past and just watch it as a movie.

    STAR TREK in 3-D

    by nivekj

Just think about it. New CGI animated Trek series shown in 3-D. Lucas would have done Clone Wars in 3-D if he could have. (Well, he could have, and he didn't.) Shut up, you!! (Furthermore, if he had the stones, he would have hired PIXAR to make the new series, and hired Genndy Tartakovsky to direct and supervise.) No! NO, STOP IT!!! (You know I'm right.) GET AWAY FROM ME!!!

It fits both a retro-50s Sci Fi aesthetic, but also matches the Apple iStore design aesthetic of the rest.

The whole production appears to have a functional iStore/Art Deco/50s blend aesthetic to it.

    by clavius

That phaser looks like a cheap Mexican knockoff you'd find in the "toy" aisle at the grocery store!

Looks like you actually have to flip the emitter around to get from stun to kill. Reminds me a great deal of Red Dwarf's "Red Alert Bulb"

Everything else looks pretty cool though.

    phaser nitpick

    by redshirt

OK I have always hated sci fi hand held weapons that don't have some kind of guard over the trigger, like pistols do. The phaser as portrayed looks so incredibly dangerous as it could be so easily accidentally fired. I mean geez, it's just a button. At least some modern pistols require significant squeezing pressure to fire, but that? Hell, Barney Fife would shoot his leg off every time he holstered that damn thing. OK stupid rant off. I just had to say it.

    that's great news!

I like the score he did for MI-3 when tom cruise is parting from his gang at the end of that film. Roar is really good too! I'm glad JJ didn't hire someone who was already affiliated with ST, their scores may be okay but Micheal G can do a much better job.

    by onebuckfilms

The score has been completed, and the movie is already in the can.

Ben Burtt of Star Wars fame is the sound effects personality, and ILM's VFX are getting some good buzz from those who've seen some of them.

    From an insider

    by bishop6

"the actual prop is NOT CHROME. It is dull stainless steel, with a lot of TOS blue-grey accents. It has a somewhat worn appearance, not unlike a real gun that's seen some use. Those who assert the screen prop has the same surface tone and texture as the toy version simply don't know what they're talking about."

    by everythingeverywherestinks

Jesus Christ, the design work on this film gets uglier and uglier with every released photo. As a former longtime hardcore Trekkie myself, I now completely and thoroughly understand why the words "nerd" and "Star Trek Fan" are synonymous. The fact that so many losers are waiting with baited breath for this parody of a reimagining is further proof that the "Trekkies," "Trekkers," or "unfuckable virgins" of the world (take your pick of terms...they are interchangable) are a hopeless group.

    Out of Context

    by jumpinjehosaphat

The second worst thing about the internet is our ability to see so far behind the wizard's curtain of a film's creation and marketing, that we're given a false impression of the whole based on parts. The context in which many of the things we've seen have yet to be experienced in any complete way. Rough sketches, pre-production models, set stills, trailer clips, and toys based on properties which haven't been seen within their intended setting culminate in a lot of misunderstanding of what the production actually may be.

    by onebuckfilms

It's possible that what we're looking at isn't even the final version of the toys.

Sometimes prototypes look crappy and wrong, and are there simply as a starting point for the manufacturing process to be worked out from.

Pigments and Materials can be adjusted to work with the same molds, but the process needs to be worked out and planned for.

    by smashing

You say "we" criticise as it allows us to explore possibilities, firstly what we?Have Trek fans combined into one thought?, isn't that the Borg?Secondly how is freaking out over some cheaply made and looking kids toys exploring possibilities?, seriously fill me in.Unless the possibilities are that some semi hysterical people will attempt to justify any behaviour with pseudo intellectual B.S and expect to get away with it.These are children's toys and allow you a peek into the aesthetic of, you know, children's toys, which themselves are based on film, a fictional event, made in Hollywood and depicting a fictional environment with made up fictional characters in them. Maybe your one of the net nerds crying as Gabe Coeners frankly uninspired Enterprise design was passed over for this film, fair play but seriously attacking then defending toys aimed at young people is so boring I can't be arsed to finish.
