WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN Arrived On NickToons Friday!!

Published at:  Jan 27, 2009 6:48:19 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

It’s been a year since Marvel Girl and Professor X disappeared in an explosion at the Xavier Institute. Mutants are now forced to register with the government, and the angrier mutants are turning terrorist. And Wolverine finds himself thrust into the unlikely role of team leader.

So begins the new, continuity intensive X-Men series premiering tonight on Nicktoons.

It sounds like my kind of X-Men cartoon:

Toonzone says:

… cherry-picks from the best elements of the two previous cartoon series, the live-action movies, and decades of comic books to ensure that the show feels familiar, but it also wants to strike out in different directions from all those earlier X-Men stories. It is much darker and more mature than the previous two X-Men cartoons, but not so much as to make the show unacceptable for the pre-teen to teen demographic.…

The Los Angeles Times says:

… it's good to see a cartoon that remembers what cartoons are supposed to do. Zap, slime and blow things up. It's almost heartwarming to see feature characters who speak in short declarative sentences that you can usually predict two beats beforehand, and who generally save the world. Unlike most cartoons on today, "Wolverine and the X-Men" does not involve children, which means that the annoying smart-mouth answers are kept to a bare minimum. Likewise, there are no talking animals (well, unless you count the more fauna-esque mutants), very little sarcasm and virtually no highfalutin dissection of pop culture. The term "crabby patty" is never uttered.

Variety says:

… Comics fans will appreciate the serious tone, and kids will enjoy the plentiful action; still, the program pales next to the Saturday-morning version that Fox carried in the early 1990s, with uneven animation and a messy narrative that could use a bit of Wolverine-style slicing and dicing. …

The X-Men’s first animated appearance in 1966:

The start of the 1992 series:

Most of you guys are gonna have to play catch up as I have now seen episode 13. As for the series itself, I still prefer XMen Evolution over this, but it has it's moments. There's even a rematch against the Hulk and speaking of which, you guys are gonna love the Hulk VS Wolverine DVD. It's more of an accurate translation of Wolvie's character than the previous animated incarnations.Let's just say he actually "slices and dices".Appearances by Deadpool,Omega Red and of course Sabretooth makes it all the better.

    Old School Synthesiser soundtracks.

    by wowsah156

The 1990's series was good because of its closeness to the material and the good use of the synth for the music. I would love it if they got John Carpenter to do the Wolverine soundtrack on his old keyboard that he used for Escape from New York and Halloween.

    by anakinsdiapers

..it really boggles my mind how so many people name drop itas some kind of benchmark concerning the X-men, or cartoons in general. The animation looked like it was done on the cheap in some Korean sweatshop, and the story's, though torn from the comics, were scripted so badly it insulted me as i watched it. I mean, seriously, this played at the same time the original run of Batman: the animated series was marching, so it gets worse when you contrast the two programs.

The 90's Marvel Cartoons were TERRIBLE

    by squashua

They tried to cram so many storylines verbatim from the late 80's, mid-90's comics that it just turned into crap. Plus the voice acting for all of them (Spider-Man, X-Men, Hulk, Iron Man and Fantastic Four) was horrendous.
X-Men Evolution was pretty good for what it was, even if it wasn't "canon". It's what "Ultimate X-Men" should have been.
Sort of dismayed that you left out a video clip of the X-Men's appearance in "Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends".

    Evolution & Wolverine

    by 4we8have15to16go23back42

I didn't really like Evolutin all that much the stories never really went anywhere until the 3rd season and the designs were very bland. Wolverine designs still have the same blandness, although its gotten a little better. While I hate the idea of Wolverine leading with Cyclops is a whiney little baby. But I have to say that I love how Wolverine loosely follows some of the stories that were actually in the comics like the 90's cartoon did. I also love how they find uses for tons of smaller characters like how Hellon and other New Mutants were used in the Future episode, etc.

    The 90s Cartoon was great

    by blindambition238

Especially how dedicated they were to maintaining continuity and adherence to original storylines and characters. For a kid, it was like comic books 101, since if you watched the series at all, you could pretty much jump into any X-Men book and already know all the character dynamics and backstory beforehand.

Unfortunately, those aspects bit it in the ass since the super detailed character designs made the animation a bit clunky, then the final seasons looked especially like ass when they ran out of money. Plus they ended up relying on way too many time travel stories.
Other then that though, if Batman The Animated Series wasn't running at the same time, I'd say that was my formative geek experience.

One area in which DC dominates Marvel

    by homer sexual

Although if I had to choose only one comic publisher, I'd go with Marvel, I still like plenty of DC comics.

But with cartoons, there are many good DC cartoons, really good. I don't think there are ANY good Marvel cartoons. Some of them are ok. They all looked cheap. NONE of them were visually appealing. Not even Ultimates.

Batman animated series, at least the first two. Justice League, especially Unlimited. Teen Titans. All of them highly entertaining to all ages and very well done. Even Batman Beyond and Superman were better than any cartoon Marvel has ever done. Although Superman used to completely destroy Metropolis in that toon. I used to think how much I'd hate Superman if I lived in Metropolis.

This new X-Men actually looks even worse than the 90's or Evolution, both of which were ok. Evolution had better writing in the eps I saw, but looked even cheaper than the stilted early-90s cartoon.

    Nice Jacket, Cyclops.

The only thing Marvel has going for them...

    by anakinsdiapers

..is spectacular Spider-Man. With that exception, all of their animated endeavors are short-sighted, make a quick buck, garbage. For the company that started the entire "heroes with people problems" era, they haven't given any of their animated heroes depth. "Hulk vs Thor?". "Hulk vs Wolverine?" "Young Avengers?" Really? It's all style over substance. And for all the people looking at the 90's X-Men with rose colored nostalgic glasses: Come clean. X-Men was insulting in it's lame execution. It made me angry to think people who didn't know better thought that that dialogue and simpleton execuion of storylines was what awaited them if they picked up a comic. Meanwhile, cartoons like Batman and Exo-Squad was doing brilliant things. Shamefull.

The 90s cartoon was hyped because of Cameron

    by reflecto

who supposedly was involved in some way, or so Marvel editorial kept claiming to us kids. To me, as a very young fan who had been raised on the Claremont era, I found it subpar. I was impressed when they killed a character right out of the gate (Morph), but he was quickly resurrected. They also chickened out on the Phoenix Saga. Bottom line IMO is that there has never been a Marvel cartoon on par with BTAS or the many DCU cartoons since. Even the new Brave & The Bold is fun.

    90's cartoon is the best

    by rufferto

I've seen the new show. I think it's got potential but it is still annoying as hell to see Wolverine in such a prominent leadership role over Cyclops and Storm while uncharacteristically treating the X-men like kids. It's a bull shit roll reversal and he is just too popular for his own good while Cyclops is made to be more incompetent and unlikable to make Logan look good. So there's a warning of what to expect. Pretty predictable actually, given the title.

why I like the 90's cartoon

    by rufferto

Could be because I grew up on it but for the most part I know its flaws. It had bad animation, the art wasn't always that hot and stories were dumb down for the kids. The violence was also toned down (guns that shoot lasers and stuff like that). So BTAS will always be the supreme super hero cartoon in that respect. However what it did excel at is the voice work. That will always be in my head what the X-men sound like. Magneto Prof X Gambit Rogue Logan Sinister Apopcalypse. Those were some great voices. Rogue sounds like a total bitch in Wolverine and the X-men and she has no "southern charm". I think she's pretty trashy probably cause of her previous incarnation and well, she looks the part.

    by rufferto

I admit the best 90s X-men are directly adapted from the books. The 2 part Proteus episode is actually pretty well done. Only thing wrong is he didn't die at the end. Which is what they did with the Dark Phoenix saga as well.

Whoever said the 90's X-Men voice acting was crap is full of it. Cal Dodd trumped Scott McNeil's Evolution Wolverine everytime. ...yes, X-Men: Evolution has some INSANELY hot female designs. Aside from HOT GOTH Rogue, there was Boom-Boom in tight jeans, and a VERY shapely Jean Grey. The series is pretty good, too. The first season is kinda blah, but it gets better as it goes along, and the animation is colorful and slick. Check out Steven E. Also Dr. Drakken from "Kim Possible", The Scotsman from "Samurai Jack", Hak Foo from "The Jackie Chan Adventures", and loads more. Name's John DiMaggio. Looking through his IMDB list, I see he's voiced plenty of comicbook characters for cartoons and video games, including Aquaman, Juggernaut, Sandman, Hammerhead, Rhino, Toyman, Bizarro, and The Destroyer. No Wolverine.

    by charger

So immediatly after seeing a comment here about putting the 90's X-Men series on DvD, I went to Toonzone.net and saw that they actually are in fact finally bringing it to DVD. http://tinyurl.com/cn35sh

Is this the same show I've been downloading for MONTHS?

    by theghostwholurks

It IS good... and the characters AREN'T teenagers like in the 2000 version. However, the new Hulk Vs. Wolverine cartoon kicks ALL of their butts up and down Cartoon Avenue! Hulk Vs. Wolverine is everything Hugh Jackman's WOLVERINE should be, but clearly WON'T (i.e. there's blood and dismemberment)At least Deadpool gets to keep his mask in the cartoon, while he dreams about killing babies. "Rock-a-bye... BANG! Heh-heh!" >:)

It seems just o-kay to me, not great.

    by the merk

I don't have an issue with Wolverine in the leadership role as the story supports it well enough. While I like the character design, there just seems to be something weird about the animation to me. It just looks like it's not of the quality it should be, something about it just doesn't seem right to me. That has usually seemed to be an issue for Marvel TV animation for me. I loved the 90's series for the stories, but was very disappointed with the animation (especially after what I saw what could be done with the Silver Surfer series). Evolution was better, but lost interest because of the teen-angst/high school angle. Having read the comics series since the start (yes, since the 60's), I tend to hope for animation that lives up to the artwork form the books. In this regards, DC has actually been more successful, imo.

The animation is actually very good, Merk!

It really is the best X-Men series to date. Hulk vs. Wolverine's animation is even better!

Glad this'll be around for a while... 14 eps, looks like, and an IMDB news link sez season 2 is already greenlit. What's with all the bumper interviews w/ various rugrats giving it "a million out of 10!" and stuff? They're making it hard to forget I'm a 38 year old man watching Nicktoons.

was horrible. Crappy animation. The one shot Pryde of the X-Men from '89 was better.

    by alientoast

Btw, you know how Krieg always went "I've never read an X-Men comic book!". Well, he's probably telling the truth. He probably watched the X-Men cartoon in the 90s. I've maybe read one or two actual X-Men comic books, but I watched nearly episode of the old series and find that to be sufficient in most regards in terms of knowing the characters.

this actually looks damn good. feels like a good combination of all the best bits of x-men... and looks like it could happily restore my faith after xmen 3 ruined my x-love.

It's not fun for the whole family. It's strictly kids stuff. You grown men should be ashamed of yourself.

I agree, Merk, the animation is uneven

    by drath

It's not really BAD however or even mediocre, but while watching this first episode (as in I've only seen one--not enough to really judge for sure) I did get a flash back to the 90s Spider-Man. Maybe it was just the goofy spider-sentinel thing. Still, the animation seemed great one scene and in the next a little cheaper than on shows like Spectacular Spider-Man or Avatar the Last Airbender. Maybe they're not as good at hiding cost-saving cuts or they just don't have as much money at Marvel (seems to be the talk of the town these days). I liked the character designs okay, though perhaps some were a little uninspired. The writing seemed okay as well (apart from the oft abused "Go! Go! Go!" line). The Medias Res is kind of half-working, half not. I'm not a fan of playing catch up, so a show that basically has no starting point is always to lose a little with me. It almost feels like X4 had X3 not sucked and ruined everything by killing Cyclops and depowering people. In general I appreciate it that they are promising to NOT retell the fucking Pheonix saga again. Time will tell, perhaps they're saving money for later. I think Evolution was a lot stronger than fans want to give it credit for being and the 90s show was a lot weaker. In my view they're the difference between Superfriends and Justice League Unlimited. Clearly the same people are working on this new show that worked on Evolution, so hopefully fans can learn to love this show the way they might have loved Evolution had they been able to get over the premise.

Pretty good to me Evolution sucked till the last Season the 90's was one the best marvel cartoons and this seems to be on par with that The Canadians will correct but I think Cyclops will lead when he joins.

The concept of Wolverine leading the Xmen is dumb

    by stalkeye

He's more of a loner than a leader.I concur with Raymar and err It's bad enough that he became the leader in X3, but now this bullshit?Fuckin' Marvel. atleast Hulk vs Wolverine is more canon than say, this series.Oh, and Batman Brave and the Bold is actually good as in better than The Batman.

There's A War Coming... But We're Not Gonna Show You It

    by laserpants

Thats what the movies ultimately amounted to -- a fantastic set-up in the first two movies followed by a silly little shill nothing of a conclusion. Like some really hot girl is blowing you and then, right before you finish, she gets up and walks away.

Batman: Brave and the Bold Is Ok

    by laserpants

But I would have rather have seen a series more in line with the more mature tone of the Nolan films. Maybe something more in line with the Batanime, but with better writing (I dug the Batanime, but storywise it was uneven).

    inhumanoids

    by dr_pepper

Exo squad and inhumanoids. Then again, what cartoon from the 80's and early 90's didn't kick A$$ of any cartoon today? Then again, I watched those as a teen and there is no way I'd want my 8 year old watching a majority of the cartoons from the 80's. They were just too grown up and were plastered on Sat/Sun mornings simply because they were animated.

Did not like the recent Hulk/Wolverine installment, mainly because i do not like how they are depicting Bruce Banner in the recent films. Hulk is the confused, insecure beast. Banner is supposed to be brilliant and in control. The struggle should be him keeping that control and not being a bumbling idiot.

ok, i just watched the entire season..

    by anakinsdiapers

..and it's pretty good. It's not spectacular spider-man good, and it's definitely "Wolverine and his amazing friends", but i liked what they were doing. The Hulk and Nick Fury show up, which opens the door for more characters outside of the X-Men universe, and they also established Mojo and the reavers, so they aren't shying away from the more zanny X-Men stories. Unfortunately, since Wolverine is the star, only Nightcrawler and Cyclops had episodes showcasing them and their bad-assedness.

How many times can they do the same thing over?

    by ghostwood

It seems like every two years, DC and Marvel reinvent Spidey, Bats and the X-Men for cartoons -- but do the same goddamned storylines over and over again (Phoenix, the symbiote suit, Genosha, etc etc). Make up some new stories for Christ's sake.
