A Report From THE LAST PICTURE SHOW Screening With Bogdanovich...(w/ Pics)

Published at:  Jan 22, 2009 9:58:50 AM CST

Merrick here...

Jeremy was kind enough to send in this report from last night's screening of THE LAST PICTURE SHOW.

Director Peter Bogdanovich was in attendance and spoke about the film. I love his story about meeting Jerry Lewis - hadn't heard that one before.

Here's Jeremy...

Last night the New Beverly Cinema hosted a night with Peter Bogdanovich, showing an archive print of his masterpiece "The Last Picture Show" -- which is probably my favorite film (and I say probably because it's difficult to pick one favorite).

No matter, "Picture Show" is a tried and true classic. From the stark B&W cinematography to Ben Johnson's rip your heart out monologue, the film is nearly pitch-perfect.

Mr. Bogdanovich talked after about how the film came to him (Sal Mineo gave him the book), to discovering Cybil Shepard (on a magazine cover he saw in a grocery store), and how Orson Welles told him -- yes, told him -- that black and white was the only way to make the film and how it is the actors friend ("When was the last time you saw a good performance in color." -- Welles).

Although, the best story Bogdanovich told was how when he met Jerry Lewis after "Picture Show" came out. Bogdanovich and his first wife were driving an old beat-up yellow car at the time, which they had spray painted black. When Jerry Lewis saw "Picture Show" he contacted Bogdanovich about a meeting, which eventually became a series of meetings. One day Bogdanovich was leaving a meeting when Jerry Lewis told him to take one of his Ford Mustangs. Bogdanovich said he couldn't take it. Lewis instructed him to take it, telling him: "I've got too many cars already, besides I'm tired of looking at that piece of shit in my driveway everytime you come over here."

I've kind of always had these little mini-dreams of meeting certain filmmakers and talking to them, and while I didn't get to have a sit-down-chat with him, it's was very, very cool to just be able to see Peter Bogdanovich talk and cut-up a couple of feet away.

And to cap the night off, an autograph on an original lobby insert.

How many minutes elapsed before he name-dropped Welles?

    by epitone

I figured fewer than ten. But if it's under five, I get a set of steak knives.

...if he had mentioned his response to the film. It's supposed to be his directors cut, just curious what was added(or lost)

    Sure, he name-drops, Welles...

    by sherman_lives

But it's worth it for his impersonation of the man. If anyone could step in for Maurice LaMarche as The Brain, it's gotta be P-Bog.

    Great film

    by mattyboy122

Although I think I prefer Paper Moon. I had a dream not too long ago that I was basically Bogdanovich (I was friends with an older Orson Welles) and it was awesome, mainly because I got to hang out with Orson Welles all the time in the dream. Then I woke up and it was lame.

The Stewardess is Flying the Plane

    by writefromleft

There's an interview with Bogdanovich in the book The Stewardess is Flying the Plane, which came out a few years ago and focuses on films of the 1970s. Worth taking a look at if you've got it on your bookshelf somewhere. Bogdanovich has more great films in him, but it's up to the money-people to recognize that.

It may be a bit rough to take credit away from the Bog, but that woman gets no credit anywhere.

Bogdanovich does a great Jimmy Stewart impersonation.

    by knuckleduster

I was at a Q&A and screening of Paper Moon with him in London a couple of years ago. He's the real deal. A true filmmaker. I'd love to see him make more films.

    Peter Bogdonavich is an A-Hole!

    by meta

I worked for him in the 1990's on that piece of crap "Texasville". The editors who worked with him were ROTFL because it was such a train-wreck. He's an egotistical jackass who thought of himself as a film-making auteur & legend. And he truly believed he was better than his "hero" Orson Welles (who's grave he fucking shits on every time he mentions his name). He treated people like shit except for the ones who could either give him money or fuck him. And the ones who did give him money, he just fucked over.
One day I'd love to write a book on the shit that fucker pulled with everybody. If it weren't for his Sopranos cameos he would be all-but forgotten. Remembered in the history books as a good director from the 70's who never achieved the success that his fellow peers did.

They were married for awhile. She did some of the writing on his first film and worked on Last Picture Show and Paper Moon. They split after TLPS cuz he wanted to get with Sybil. Given the difference in his (nowhere NEAR as good) post-platt work, I've never felt like he gave the lady her due.

Peter Bogdanovich is the Dane Cook/Eli Roth...

    by bgdawes

...of the 70's golden age of cinema. Read the book 'Easy Riders and Raging Bulls' to find out how much he fucked over Polly Platt. She should be celebrated as much as him since she was really the driver behind his only good films; then went on to produce some pretty great films: Bottle Rocket, Broadcast News, Pretty Baby, and Say Anything.

JEOPARDY: answer in form of question...

    by thegreatwhatzit

How many times did Bogdanovich bang Cybill Shepherd until she was rewarded finally with the LAST PICTURE SHOW role?

Bog's valentines to Shepherd (plum roles in lousy movies) tanked his career.

The Answer is zero. It was after he cast her that he became obsessed with her and fucked over the great Polly Platt (as BGDAWES mentioned).

The best description for the team of Polly Platt and Bogdanovich was that she was the tracks and he was the train.

He did the same thing with Dorothy Stratten.

    by bob cryptonight

Only this time he learned that you can't fuck someone over without consequences. Or maybe he DIDN'T learn it, because I think he still blames Heffner for her death.

    Dorothy Stratten

    by meta

Bob Cryptonight, you are correct sir. When I worked for him not only did he blame Hef for her death, no employee on the film could even mention Hef or Playboy without being summarily fired. Of course he didn't think he had anything to do with driving her husband to viciously murder her. I mean in his world nobody gets upset when somebody finds out somebody's been screwing your wife. I mean to Bogdanovich Stratten's husband was just a psychopath who got upset because he was banned from the Playboy Mansion, not because he was fucking his wife. But I guess Bogdanovich was so wracked with grief (or guilt) that the developed a relationship and eventually married Stratten's underage sister, Louise. We can only hope he waited until she turned 18 before he finally did her.
