iFMagazine has learned new details on the live action Cowboy Bebop courtesy of producer Erwin Stoff. Fans of the anime will pleased to learn Stoff stressed that Bebop's creator Shinichirô Watanabe will be involved throughout the process.
via iF
“The truth of the matter of is, I’m not going to know anything else until there’s a script,” Stoff tells iF, “but we’d like to make it next year.”
Peter Craig is on board to pen the script, and Stoff is quick to note that the story will pick up with Spiegel already in action.
“It’s not an origin story,” says Stoff. “We start with him, when he is in his present life already.”
...
“First of all, we’re honoring the series,” says Stoff. “I don’t know how many people can say this, but the first thing we did was go over and meet with Watanabe. We started there. He will be the first guy to read a script when it’s done. We’ll discuss directors with him. As far as the cast goes, I can’t tell you who is going to play what, but I can’t imagine that we’re not going to have a totally multi-ethnic cast.”

...that don't annoy the shit out of me and are even very watchable. (The other one is Hellsing, although I seriously couldn't make it to every episode of that one. too.)
-
That's all.
-
Then we can get someone more suited for the role.
-
hopefully a fully loaded Blu Ray collection.
-
Do you really want Keanu to become Heath Ledger 2009?
-
Just because all of your childhoods were raped doesn't give you the right.
-
Never will be, and the only good Ledger film was TDK, and seeing as he decided to die and ruin the franchise for everyone i have no respect for him.
-
piss off out of here. Brokeback Mountain and Monster's Ball were better films than The Dark Knight. He had an impressive resume.
-
Someone with talent.
-
He's got more success in one pubic hair than all of the people that moan about him combined.
-
Do it right, many of us are behind you Watanabe& Stoff!
-
Okay so he's not the greatest actor ever but he's not the worst by a long way, I've been thoroughly entertained by more than a few of his movies. On top of that he comes across as a genuinely decent guy. To say you hope he dies just makes you seem like a complete twat.
-
Man...Keanu is Ok but the Spike from the series jumps off the screen with charisma, something Keanu has never had a lot of....I worry about this...
-
black dynamite as spike!
-
Your name seems to directly reflect your taste in movies. Ledger was in a lot of good shit. The Patriot kicked ass. And before you start up with some elitist talkbacker "THAT MOVIE SUUUUCCKED!!! FUUCK HOLLYWOOOOD!!" bullshit, remember that most normal people liked that movie.
-
I don't hate Keanu I just think he's way too old. He'll be 46 if they start filming next year. He'll be 47 when it is released and probably 50 if a sequel is made. The character is supposed to be under 30.... oh and Patriot sucked ass, by "normal" people you must mean dumb and uneducated...lol
-
...who don't really go for anime seem to be into this series. i'm one of them, and pretty interested to how a live-action version will turn out.... god knows it's going to be better than Dragonball....
but feel free to discount everything i say. after all, i liked constantine, johnny mnemoic, and point break. -
anime sucks.
-
I won't be, like, crushed if this is bad, but it could be as legit as TDK, if done right. Before you fat fucks fly off the handle, I'm not saying it should be "dark" like TDK, or take any cues whatsoever from TDK, I'm just saying there's as compelling a story in there as was in TDK.
-
Samurai Champloo. Similar storytelling structure (and humour, violence, etc). Shinichirô Watanabe directed episodes in both series.
-
That whole episode is great. I say if they want to use any episode as a template for a movie that would be the one.
-
Fucking hilarious.
-
Judge Dredd was a good film. But the comics in 2000AD are better, obviously.
-
Judge Dredd the film was a cinematic masterpiece, all directors watch that film and take notes.
-
He just needs to learn to work on his smile a bit more. Shee-it, its not like this is going to be an Oscar movie or anything. As long as I have fun watching it, all's well. I just hope they keep the music at the start, and Faye wears something with a bit more taste than her poorly designed usual clothing. Don't get me wrong, it can be revealing but her style just aint good.
-
Do not fuck this up.
-
Sorry, but this guy doesn't have the chops.
-
Cuz they could really do some good here. They're buddies with Watanabe, right?

The Wachowski Brothers & Sisters is the WRONG choice for Cowboy
by w00master
Then again, the entire Matrix series was a travesty. Terrible terrible film series. Ugh.
-
I can see a little bit of Spike in him. He has the broody noir side, just not the other aspects. I'm sure he will do fine. At least it isn't Shia.
-
It's this Bebop I don't watch Hollywood to touch: http://tinyurl.com/hspos
-
...revolves around sequels. Just keep adding a couple of years to each movie, and Keanu's age immediately becomes a major factor in casting him. As for directors, obvious choices range from Bruce Beresford and Russell Mulcahy to Brian Trenchard-Smith and Ryuhei Kitamura, although I'd like to see some new blood in there; maybe Sanaa Hamri.
It's also good to hear he's not going to whitewash the cast! -
I have yet to see anything in Keanu's resume that indicates he can pull off a Spike Speigel impression
-
fuck you if you don't think keanu has what it takes. if they pump him full of guarana and tell him hes playing a goofy, jerky dangerous guy this could be good.
-
DO IT
-
Actually, my first thought was Ron Perlman, too, but as awesome as he is, he can't get ALL the good roles :P
-
So THAT DOESN'T FUCKING HELP, DOES IT? Hollywood is dead to me. Dead. And you, fucking idiots, who embrace this sort of abomination with joy, you are the ones to blame. You're the idiots who'll pay to see this crap and thus kill any chances of good anime being taken serious by american audiences. Dumb mutherfuckers.
-
Skinny little, red-haired, goofy-as-all-Hell-computer Chinese hacker girl, who just happens to have a long-ass name and might NOT appear in the film. She appeared in later episodes of BEBOP and none of the 'Asteroid Blues' ones.
-
Are ignorant. And have never seen great art like "Evangelion", or "Cowboy Bebop."
-
Anyone else get really creeped out by the "Pierrot Le Fou" episode? Here's a link to the fight scene (remove the 3 spaces): http://www.you tube.com/ watch?v=QJEJj xuGe9g
-
I'd rather have Robin show up in the Nolanverse before I see Ed appear in a live-action Bebop franchise.
-
Have you SEEN Dakota Fanning recently? How is THAT going to play an character whose sexual identity is in doubt for much of the series?

I'm not sure of any of their races but we can make deductions..
by scorpio2049
Spike is from Mars and with the last name Spiegel he must have Jewish heritage. Jet is unknown to my knowledge, but I'd say he's white. Faye is probably from Singapore because of the statue in her flashbacks, making her Asian. Ed is from Earth and is probably not Chinese because her father's last name is Lutfen and he calls her Françoise. I say leave the whole idea alone. This is going to be ruined. The only saving grace would be Watanabe being involved. I'm counting on him to not let the American producers run all over him.
-
So this means Will Smith is playing President Barak Obama the XI? As far as I know...most of the main cast in the series all looked of the same "ethnicity" to me..if indeed Anime from Japan is even worried about such things. I swear I hope this isn't glimpse at new age of even more insane and pervasive political correctness.
-
Bruce Willis as Spike and Dakota Fanning as Ed.
-
What a damn shame.
-
Keanu Reeves cannot play "cool", and cowboy bebop is all about cool.
if it has to be an american cast and crew, my votes would be with:
Spike: Josh Hartnett
Jet: Sid Haig
Faye: Amy Adams
Director: QT or Paul Verhoeven
Cinematographer: Robert Richardson
Production Designer: Geoff Darrow or William Sandell (circa 1987-1991)
The RZA should also be in this universe in one way or another.
-
Get real, that guy can't act for shit and Keanu is Daniel Day lewis compared to him. Bebop is NO Oscar movie, I don't know what you guys are bragging about. It is about fun, guns and fights. And Geoff Darrow as Production Designer would be cool. And NO Wachowski, get some new Korean or Japanese director to make a fresh movie with no Matrix memories attached to it.
