Whedon & Goddard Talking To Sorkin Vet Whitford About Horror Thriller CABIN IN THE WOODS!!

Published at:  Jan 21, 2009 1:18:19 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

The great Bradley Whitford, who was Billy Madison’s nemesis before landing lead roles in Aaron Sorkin’s “The West Wing” and “Studio 60,” is negotiating to star in the MGM/UA horror-thriller “Cabin in the Woods.”

The project was penned by Joss Whedon (“Toy Story,” “Serenity”) and Drew Goddard (“Lost,” “Cloverfield”), who first collaborated on the final seasons of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel.”

Goddard is making his feature directorial debut on the project; Whedon is producing.

Already aboard the project is Richard Jenkins (“Burn After Reading,” “Step Brothers,” “The Visitor”), still best remembered by me as Nate Fisher’s dead dad on “Six Feet Under.”

The Hollywood Reporter offers the first hint of what the movie’s about:

While the studio and filmmakers were loath to provide character details, it is understood that Jenkins and Whitford will play white-collar co-workers with a mysterious connection to the cabin.

I’m a fan of everybody involved, and plenty excited to hear it’s finally gearing up its spring shoot. Release date is slated for Feb. 5, 2010.

Normally I jump on the Wheedon hate bandwagon

    by tolomey

but I'm going to give this a look. I've always been a fan of cabin in the woods type horror movies, I respect Drew Goddard and all he has done for lost and I'll admit that Wheedon has his moments too (Firefly was exceptional).
A note to the film makers though....Is it too much to ask for a small Bruce Campbell cameo? If you are doing a horror movie about a cabin in the woods then you have to have a shout out to Ash. Failing that, how's about a couple of Craven and Raimi movie posters ripped up on a wall somewhere...Evil Dead geeks will know what I'm talking about, it'll just be a nice little nod to this sub genres masters.

Serenity was the best SCI-FI film since Alien or Blade Runner! So anything this man writes, i'm willing to give a chance. Even if it does sound a little, what is the word, SQUARE!

  • 90% of the dialouge in that movie = "Oh My God!" "Shit!!" "Oh my GOD!!" "SHIT! SHIT, SHIT, SHIT!!!!" Yeah, real wordsmith, that Goddard is.

  • Jenkins is great and Whedon will ensure that the film will play around with the conventions of the horror genre

The movie followed around hipster 20 somethings, not fucking scholars and philosophers. If you're gonna be a snide prick with your comments, make sure your criticism is at least a little bit founded.

    "hipster 20 somethings"

    by ray gamma

Isn't this the reason all movies suck these days? Was "The Andromeda Strain" aimed at "hipster 20 somethings"? Was the 70s version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" aimed at "hipster 20 somethings"?

No, of course not. They treated their audiences with respect. They were not made to pander to the instructions of a boardroom filled with out-of-touch executives looking at 'demographics' that erroneously assume that the target audience is mainly illiterate 20-something morons with the attention span of a wasp.

Young people, even teenagers, are perfectly capable of understanding complex dialogue and scientific theories and deep philosophical thoughts. But you'd never think so, based on our culture's recent slide into the "Fast and Furious" entertainment style. In the future, this current era will be viewed with absolute ridicule in terms of its vacuous moronic entertainment.

Those old 60s and 70s movies are serious, cult classic sci-fi masterpieces. Current movies are just accompaniment for a bucket of popcorn. They'll be watched once and completely forgotten, and will certainly never be revered as masterpieces decades later, in the way that films like Kubrick's "2001" were.

I think you missed C0ns' point, Ray Gamma...

    by nice marmot

He said the movie followed characters that were 20 something hipsters, he wasn't referring to the audience. I think even the most intelligent audience members should understand if 20 something hipsters who were at a party one minute and suddenly running from monsters the next start spouting out a whole lot of "OH SHIT!" and "OH GOD!" Maybe the next monster attack movie will follow characters from the local NPR station.

    by cowboyone

Should take a shot at crafting a successful linear narrative script while maintaining the convention of "recovered video cam footage". Go ahead, I DARE you. Here's something JJ and I agree on: Goddard is the fuckin' man and he's gonna be around for a long time.

Why Do They Seek To Hide The Story Concept Details???

    by media messiah

First, why drag this along...and not reveal the concept when anybody in Hollywood who wants to know what the story is, probably already knows??? It is now getting ridiculous, every film in Hollywood is now trying this media manuever. If they do a movie about Chucky Cheese they'll tell you, Oh, no...details of the story, are and concept, are being kept under-wraps for the immediate future. Like what kind of a twist can a film on Chucky Cheese be hiding that is that interesting you've got to hide the concept??? It's all about hype these days.

    by spiketbb

or any movie for that matter. There is a middle ground between movies like the Saw and Hostel series and the watered down room temperature milk that so many recent PG "horror" movies are. Ray Gamma did make some very good points about past suspense and horror movies being made for adult, sophisticated audiences.

This Is What Happens When Studios Fail To Give Film Concepts Out

    by media messiah

This talkback is as dead as they come??? Why??? There is nothing in the damn press release about this film that people can really discuss with much enthusiasm or latch upon, as all information about this film has been made so unnecessarily vague, so far...from story concept on??? Not a very good media and public relations effort, I must say. You gotta give the people more of a clue than this about story details or the overall concept, or they won't respond well to helping you stir the fire you are trying to build.
