George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter To Judge New Fox Competition Reality Show AMERICA’S NEXT PRESIDENT??
I am – Hercules!!
The headline up there is a giant lie. But now you know how the residents of Canada feel.
Alex Trebek will fill the Ryan Seacrest role in the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.’s “Canada’s Next Prime Minister,” which will feature three former Canadian prime ministers choosing a contestant they think will make the best leader of their chilly icicle of a nation.
And – blimey! – the CBC has also sold the format to the BBC, so we might see “Britain’s Next Prime Minister” as well.
Find all of The Hollywood Reporter’s story on the matter here.

Yikes.

So this is how Western Civiization finally ends. Not with a bang, but with a TV exec's reality brain-fart.
-
Reality TV has just gone too far. What if we end up with the next William Hung or Sanjaya as our next Prime Minister?
-
prove the mayans right!
-
i say why not? couldn't be any worse than that whole voting thing we've been doing since 1867.
-
western civilization has been ending for a while now.. this is just a marker for people to realise.
-
We'll get President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho faster than you can chant "NO MORE TAXES" and stuff like "FIX THESE ROADS!" Ah well.. democracy is probably better with electrolytes.
-
"this is a republic" (ORLY? no!!! yer smert!) is getting pistol whipped. Just crawl away and save it for youtube.
-
President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho
-
You beat to the idiocracy reference .
-
Blame Canada!!!
-
You know what they say about great minds.
-
I thought this was AJ Cutler's attempt to revive the presidential election show he actually had in development.
-
I just can't see it to be honest..Tony Blair = Too famous/rich, John Major = Probably also too rich, Maggy Thatcher = Too rich/upperclass/old and full of dementia. Are any of our other prime ministers still alive?
-
They're gonna pick the crappy Prime Ministers to judge this bodes badly for this show. Do you know how many former Canadian PM's there are that are still alive, not to mention willing to do this to help them sell a book?
-
Because the last 8 years hadn't made enough of a mockery of the presidency.
-
A reality show called THE GOVERNMENT - where you vote people OUT instead of in. And they're all monitored by cameras 24/7.
-
No,they are the only ones still with us...I guess the beeb would use media friendly ex MPs/Ministers like Michale Portilio , Edwina Currie, John Reid or Patricia Hewitt.
-
is proof that our nation's collective intellegence has plummeted.
-
this is the show's second season and they arent literally picking canada's next leader. its just a "who would make the better leader" type deal. the winners dont actually become prime minister, if they did well that first season winner would have taken over our current moron and he hasnt. and considering its a canadian show, if there's any money i doubt they win much so really, you dont actually become prime minister and get a probably lame prize....why even bother? my country is so awesome and unique in the way it copies its older brother. lol
-
Please tell me this is being sponsored by Carls Jr.

Lee Harvey Oswald, Sunday afternoon, November 25th, 1963, aired on all three major networks at the time (there was no Fox then).Unfortunately it was improvised or "ad libbed" so there was no way to promote it or sell advertising. But it sure as hell was a dose of "reality".
-
Or did she win it from Publisher's Clearing House?
-
She bang this economy back on track!!
-
Being a Canadian voter who has watched the Canadian version, here's why it won't work in the USA.
The Canadian version is a 2-hour special in the form of a debate, with the former prime ministers being our panel posing questions.
An American version would no doubt see all the contestants locked in a house for six weeks while they compete in challenges like "voter pandering" and "soundbite writing." And someone gets voted out or "loses their party nomination" or whatever at the end of every episode.
All things considered, the show is pretty lame. -
WE'VE ALL LOST OUR MINDS! THIS IS PROOF! 'CANADA'S NEXT PRIME MINISTER'???! WTFWTFWTFWTF??!!! THIS IS THE END!
-
SPITTING IMAGE. Bring it back with actual global players.
-
The Blu-Ray sale ended at least a day ago.
-
Honestly, a few years back there was a story about how former Prime Minister Joe Clark was spotted in a department store in his sweats with no security whatsoever. The position isn't really as glamorous as one thinks, plus you need to deal with the constant embarassment of knowing that your boss is the Queen of England.
-
With two d's for a double dose of pimpin.
-
Flava Flave and Tonya Harding dropping a brown butt brick in Sarah Palin's eager greedy mouth. I'd buy that for a dollar !
-
That IS a great idea. I'm probably gonna steal it
-
It's Queen of Canada, thanks.
And second, the Fox/CBC analogy doesn't quite work. Perhaps PBS/CBC. -
Isn't time they actually start working on that show that they planned for the US? Isn't that candidate supposed to be prepped for 2012? Seacrest for president where he ends every state of the union with "Seacrest! Out!"
-
I might also add that the very fact that we have a Queen and a GG (who, obviously, isn't in my good books at the moment) means that they can occupy the ceremonial place for the PM that a president might otherwise occupy in the States (you wouldn't see a PM taking a majestic trip by rail into Ottawa for his inauguration, nor would millions show up for it). This, of course, leaves room for the PMs to be a bit more mundane and they can do stuff like walk around in their sweatpants and be in very boring CBC specials that nobody will watch. It's not a terrible system.
Consider what we know already about Obama's daughters, their schooling, their lunch menus, and that damned puppy (hell, the guy's not even sworn in yet). Compare that to what the average joe knows about Jean Chretien and his troubled son - the alcoholic, violent, convicted rapist. If a presidential child had done that, you'd never hear the end of it so long as you lived. So perhaps I prefer the low-key approach we take, even if the Queen has to get involved. -
More over-moralizing bullshit. It's bad enough already with the religion litmus tests and the expectations of perfect personal morality (usually sexual, which makes little to no sense when it comes to the duties of any office other than Surgeon General) Can you imagine the friggen "pageant answers" these people would have to give here in the good old USA??
Such as and the Iraqi children peace in god's hands and such as.
For the first time I may be in agreement with religious nuts. It may just be "the end times" after all. -
It's a friggin' tv show. Get a life.
And where's the 24 talkback, Herc?
(The third sentence is used to provide evidence that the second sentence is actually sarcasm; I'm telling you because I am aware that roughly 50% of tbers will misread it. The Subject and first sentence still stand though.) -
"The competition begins online. Young Canadians aged 18-25 are invited to apply for the show and campaign to be a finalist. Through debate and challenges, the candidates are narrowed down to four who appear on CBC Television, where they engage in a heated debate on the issues facing Canada today. The audience votes and the winner receives $50,000 and a paid internship at Magna International, The Dominion Institute and the Canada-US Fulbright program. Second, third and fourth place winners also receive cash and internship prizes."
-
Not even Moses had to deal with this shit.
-
That's the main component of the Provincial electoral process, not Federal.

Canada's former PMs don't have anything better to do?

This is no less discerning than our current political process
by yackbacker
People are tragically uninformed across the board. They vote mostly on emotion (fear, hope, etc.). We're flying blind, and we've been doing so for a long fucking time. Why not make this process a tv show? Take the MSNBC's and FOX NEWS's off the table once and for all.

The America's Next Top Model winner doesn't really become America next top model. The American Idol winner doesn't always become an American idol. And more than one person on the show "Survivor" is still alive at the end of the series. (Although that could be an awesome twist: "The tribe has spoken." BANG!!)
The Next Prime Minister is a glorified university debating contest. There's no guarantee the winner will be elected to anything.

No Browncoat, they don't have anything better to do. They don't have security either, because nobody cares what happens to them after they leave office. I think Mulroney is the only one gainfully employed, Chretien is probably cashing checks from some ceremonial position, and the others are complete no-hopers. It would be funny if it weren't so pathetic.
-
Seriously f*ck the world leaders in their all seeing ass.
-
having the top 10 candidates for the US President on an island and for 9 weeks, they g through various tests (intelligence, diplomatic, health, hmm cage match?) and at the end we all get the surviving candidate as our new President Elect. Yes..on one hand, it exposes us to the worst type of popularity-contest style politics..but on the other, it would be interesting to see someone like Mitt Romney fighting Hillary Clinton in a Thunderdome.
-
George HW Bush would be Simon, George W Bush would be Paula, Jimmy Carter would be Randy, and Clinton would be Seacrest. And Palin would be William Hung.

i bet emperor cheney tells dubya who to pick.

Cuz he likes his Presidents like he likes his coffee! Not too dark..and a little bit sweet!

Canadian Politicians have a pretty good relationship with television, in my opinion. Stephen Harper (our prime minister) is on the Rick Mercer Report (kind of like a Canadian "Daily Show with Jon Stewart" but with more sketches) a lot, and the same goes with all the leaders of the opposition party. One of our MP (member of parliament) went skinny dipping with Mercer on CBC. So it isn't that weird to see a politician on a silly show such as this. Especially on the CBC. However, do I think the show's a good idea? No. No I do not. It's stupid. Unlike the Rick Mercer Report, this one lacks all intelligence.
-
ITV already tried something similar and people ended up voting for the candidate with extreme right-wing views.
-
If I remember correctly it was a panel made up of former PMs Brian Mulroney, Kim Campbell, Joe Clark, and Paul Martin. It was hosted by Rick Mercer. They have young people at podiums taking questions from the PMs on different policy issues. I think it is a great idea to get the young folk involved in civics.

Yeah, I would've thought the 6 million Jews and others exterminated by Hitler, or maybe the 11 million of his countrymen that Stalin put to death was a lower moment for humanity. But you're right, this is definitely lower.
-
All the mouth-breathers will be weeded out during the pretzel-eating competition.
-
as chicken grease points out, this show has already had a season. It's basically a competition to find the best civics students and give them a scholarship.

Need. To. Die. They are sucking the life out of our Earth. They are the reason the polar ice caps are melting. Then just plain 'plode!

You all realize the show doesn't really pick the next PM, right?
by flim springfield
It's a show for 18-25 year-olds, and all the win is a political internship.
-
In eight years when you guys are done with Obama, could you send him up here.
-
Any Canadian can tell you that apart from Hockey, there is nothing worth watching on CBC. It's the equivalent of PBS. According to a study done in 2003, CBC only holds 7% of Canadian viewership. AICN probably has more readers than CBC has viewers, so this story is the most attention this show is ever going to get.
-
you idiots can have him
-
Where are the spoilers?
-
We got one for every episode of the horrid season 6, so until season 7 starts sucking, I think it's only appropriate.
-
They both just lost the right to mock the US.
-
If you check out theglobeandmail.com (the closest thing Canada has to the NYTimes and that's a stretch) there's a story about how the producers of the show haven't been able to find enough contestants so they've actually been calling the political parties, asking them to provide the show with young contestants even though they've tried to run politically in the past which was a major no-no rule of the show in the first place. And two of the PM's they hired for the first season didn't even make it through a full year as PM up here (lookin at you John Turner).
-
...without the money and clout or the talent or the popularity or the resources that PBS and BBC have. Plus Canada is full of people who spend their days hating the CBC and the Globe and Mail and ranting on and on about left-wing agendas when they wouldn't know a real agenda even when it's bit them in the arse (and what's with all the Canucks talking like old Brits here eh? hehe)
-
Issues mean NOTHING. It's all about who's "cool" to support. It's been going on for decades but it's just glaringly apparent with Obama (Oprah, Obama Girls, etc). Google the clip from Howard Stern asking voters to identify Obama/McCain issues. It's honestly terrifying no matter which person you voted for. Still think voters should have to identify 3 simple yes/no issues before you vote is counted. Then of course the parties would find ways of screwing with that too.
-
Have we officially commandeered it?
-
it's nice to see the Canucks and Brits going forth was something utterly retarded like this, ya know, rather than us
-
not "was something"
-
If only the CBC would take a page out of the Global/CTV playbook and fill their lineups with American shows. Wow, what a better place we'd be then!
-
...in the name of Jack Bauer. So what's the deal with the dude from Maroon 5 working for Emmerson?
-
Looking at the thread of posts he has made within the past few days and the noticeable omissions, it is clear that we are facing a clear and present danger with regards to Herc no longer reporting on "Cool news."
-
Who's the biggest idiot, her or him for mentioning it in front of an FBI agent?
The President's Wife hung out for 30 minutes doing nothing? Damn, I wish I had that much free time. -
That ain't good.
-
Why does the FBI think Jack took Freckles along to capture Tony and then break him out an hour later? What's the logic supposed to be?
-
I saw her listed on IMDB for all 24 episodes. And they wouldn't kill her off as coldly as that. Jack's done some cold shit in his day, but this would be a bit too much.
-
This show proves that government agencies are filled with idiots. You cannot apply logic to their idiocy.
-
Cold shit = Chappelle?
-
They show some unedited movies sometimes, that's one of the few good things. They used to show Arrested Development, but not anymore. (simpsons is still on, though) They even lost the iconic Hockey Night in Canada theme to TSN because they were too gat-damn cheap. And Strombo's new show pretty much blows (unless he gets a good guest ala the Pumpkins. Strombo is a good interviewer but the package around the interviews is jaw-dropingly awful)
-
I just thought they had given a reason for it. That Freckles (what's her real name? Michelle 2.0?) said something like "Ah, Jack's plan was to blah blah blah and that's why he brought Tony here then broke him out." Guess not.
-
5 for 5 so far. Hopefully the show can keep it up from here. Damn you Herc for already giving up on the 24 talkbacks.
-
And what of freckle Jack? I can't believe she would be buried alive. At some point, thanks to fox, we know that Jack comes face to face with the president. The fact that I know this kind of pisses me off. I would swear though that I saw freckle jack in the oval office with him.
-
I would say that season seven is one of the best ones of the series so far. There haven't been any whizbang moments but it's been very, very solid so far. Hopefully it will get more intense as the hours continue.
-
Is it just me, or are they refusing to pull the trigger this season? The brave guard didn't get a bullet, Freckles didn't get a bullet, and the planes had a near hit. WTF? It's not that I have bloodlust or anything, but the gravitas of the show comes from believing people are in danger. I have yet to see any evidence that people are in danger.
That said, if she ends up dying of suffocation I'll be happy that the writers showed some balls.
BTW, the First Lady plotline sucks. After Sherry Palmer and Martha Logan (in S5, not 6), we expect better from our first ladies than this weepy 'oh my son is dead' crap. Plus the dude totally radiated traitor. *sigh*
Concern is same as last week: the storytelling is there, but still not feeling it in my gut.
AG dude was a dick, though, huh? I wanted Moss to pop him. Also, love that the techie is two-timing his wife with *the mole* -
My prediction is that blonde Erika is the mole. And I'm mad that his wife wasn't crashed due to No Cutsies.
-
Yeah, it was WAY too obvious that the secret service guard was evil. BUT I am intrigued by the situation the FH is in, and want to see him do something spectacular and violent next week to get out of it.
-
Good luck with that Canada.
-
Each episode will feature a has-been or wannabe taking a crap. Worst pile of excrement wins.

I kinda like this idea for the USA...Better than the non-debatin
by conspiracy
At least we might actually get to hear more than corporate approved, 20 sec, base pandering sound bites. As for the leader of the Free World being decided by 14yr old girls; considering most Americans can't find Afghanistan on a map or balance their checkbooks...what difference would it really make?
-
Now that I can respect. Canada, you aren't all bad!
-
The love interest of whatshisface is absolutely the mole. As soon as she said "I'm still thinking about last night", I knew. Who else could it be? Someone we haven't met yet? The FBI director is a dope, that guy is just a selfish jerk, and janeane garofolo is a fraidy cat. It has to be her. About the first husband, I agree. He needs to stop whining and do somthing for once. Taking down a secret service agent while you are experiencing paralysis should be interesting.
-
Yeah, you'd rather the CBC gave your tax dollars to some old crone who was asking millions beyond what the song was worth? Okay, sure...
-
The media did their best to elect Barack Obama. Isn't that right, Harry? The leftist media became Obama-pushers. How many times did Harry do what he could to promote Obama? He (like much of the media) became a crazy evangelist for the left! They were willing to overlook his general lack of qualifications or experience and do what they could to hump him in public while ignore Hillary and other credible candidates. We will see, in four years, if their pushing was worth it after all. My guess? They will still push him -- even if he is a disaster.
-
"Intelligence" was a CBC series.
Sure, they killed it. But that was just because the USA Embassy threatened to nuke Vancouver. -
Don Cherry is an absolute fucking joke and completely unwatchable. So, yes, if Millions of tax dollars at the CBC are going to something, I'd rather keep the HIC theme where it went as opposed to keeping that prick Cherry on TV.

-
constructed ambiguity. I could say the same for McCain. But obama is a man we think we know. and we dont know him at all. This obama age is the calm before the storm. because the age the follows will be the real nightmare. the palin age.
-
thanks, guys. barack is one cool cat.
-
and if i was to tell the that Ireland is close to bankruptcy they would be shocked. all politicians the world over are in catch up mode. events are changing minute by minute. Politicians are scratching their heads baffled by what to do. Ireland went to the polls 2 years ago. Cowan gave ahearn his third term. Ahearn was pushed by cowan from office. cowan has said nothing about this. All the spin said that cowan was a great intellect and was a great leader. now irelands ecomony is hanging off a cliff. out leaders our dozingly standing around the place wondering what to do. Noboy has a clue. not the govt, not the opposition(who shout alot) nor the public sector unions who have warned the govt against pay cuts or pay freezes. Irelands Ecomonic credibility has hit the shredder. As americans look set to inaugarate barack obama. This day 90 years ago the first dail met. that lead to ireland getting its independence. Oh I would tell the 40 million irish americans about sean fitzpatrick blew apart the credibility of anglo irish bank. By taking 87 million euros worth of loans out of one bank and putting it into another and did this over and 8 year period and nobody batted an eyelid. so obama who has irish roots(moneygall or shinrone) will be basking in a blair like honeymoon period. While our leader has all but disaoeared Barack should not make the same mistake. dont blame economists(ahearn said that he didnt understand how some economist didnt commit sucide) and dont blame the media. come up with your hands up and say what the problem is and what youre going to about it. People will like him even more. that said Obama has 2 years and the clock starts ticking now....
-
There's this thing called the internet, so thanks to RTE.IE and INDEPENDENT.IE and other sites, some of us Irish-Americans are well up to speed on the death of the Tiger. Those who are not are simply intellectually lazy.
-
Thats some are up to speed. It doesnt make it any easier to see the way country is being run from ireland itself. I hope to god, that the cowan who gave bertie his third victory in a row, returns. to fucking lead the country. one of the opposition leaders who wants an election. was laughed at. On our version of Question time called Q and A. On the panel irish ecomonist Moore Mcdowell, minister for foreign affairs Michael Martin, a tax expert and an irish american laywer called Larry O donnell.

I guess that movie "Idiocracy" was right on the money. Pull up a toilet and slug down some "Brawndo: The Thirst Mutilator" and enjoy the show.

George W. Bush and Bill Clinton will team up to make movie...
by leafar the lost
...called "George & Bill's Excellent Adventure". The two ex-presidents meet at a party, and during the event they sneak past their secret service agents and embark on an adventure...bullshit! George W. Bush has done such a bad job as president that I can't even joke about him. After 9/11 Bush could have united America, but instead he did everything he could to tear it apart. He invaded Iraq for no good reason, and refused to leave. He sent over 4,000 American soldiers to their deaths, just so he wouldn't look bad when no WMD's were found. George W. Bush is, in my opinion, not only the worse President of all time, but he is also the worse human being of all time. He isn't worth the time it is taking to write this...

True enough on Cherry, true enough. On that I think the CBC's being pragmatic, knowing that hockey is its big hit and to lose Cherry would be a severe blow beyond letting go of a silly little tune. And I, for one, don't mourn CTV's nabbing of the theme; they gave it a much better arrangement than the CBC's managed in decades.

Long time no see!

Seeing as Herc is in the process of only putting up TB's for lame shows...
