Email from Hugh Jackman regarding WOLVERINE reshoots!

Hey folks, Harry here... Apparently Hugh tried to send this to me yesterday. I never received his email. Today, a concerned fairy godmother connected loosely between myself and the man-god Hugh Jackman, tells me that apparently I'm ignoring an email from Hugh Jackman. Interesting... so we begin a series of communications via another party between Hugh and I... and sure enough we discover that I can not get mail from FOX.COM. Apparently they can't send out to me, yet I can mail in. INTERESTING. Suffice to say, we worked out the tech angles and I got the email and the picture from Hugh. Now, before we go on to this - you should know that officially this is what is happening. You won't hear from any official source the problems that have occurred on this film. That said, there is very very good news. DARK KNIGHT's rather phenomenal success is helping the creatives behind WOLVERINE to unleash the sort of Wolverine that we're hoping for, let's hope for the best, cuz honestly wouldn't we all want an amazing WOLVERINE movie... set in Japan... ahem. HELLFIRE CLUB... well, if we are ever to see any of that - this one has to work. Let's hope that the work in frozen Vancouver will do exactly that.

Hey Mate- Would you mind posting this? Thank you for your support! HJ Hey everyone - It's Hugh Jackman, sending this note from freezing Vancouver. I have read a lot of your online comments regarding the footage that we are currently shooting and I share your passion for the Wolverine character and the movie - I owe it all to you guys! I wanted to reach out and let you know that due to scheduling conflicts with certain cast members and location/weather considerations, we had to wait until now to shoot a couple of scenes. Please rest assured that WOLVERINE will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations. I am stoked by the positive response to the teaser, which clearly reflects the tone and scope of the film. If you like that, we've got much more in store! In the meantime, here's an exclusive shot of some characters you may recognize... Cheers, Hugh

I feel like if they really wanted this to be badass, they wouldn't have picked that director. Doesn't seem to understand the material. And shot it to look like Remo Williams or Commando, which are okay in and of themselves, but not what we expect from a Wolverine movie. Love Jackman. But this looks really less than stellar. As usual, I always hope I'm proved wrong.

    Looks good

    by the_scream

A lot better than X3 which I hated. I have some faith in this film and I respect HJ, a fellow Aussie. Although I do find it amusing how careful the studios are not to annoy the fans online. Back in the 80s and 90s we were irrelevant. Now we hold all the power. If only fans would stop showing up for films like AVP and Fantastic Four.

    Mr Jackman

    by A-COD

I want Wolverine to be great but it just looks perfunctatory right now. It makes me nervous when I hear talk of spinoff movies around 3rd tier characters. Gambit and Deadpool are third stringers at best. Wolverine should have been a one or two movie spin off around a healthy X-Men series. X3 blew that, you should have threatened to walk when you heard they were going to kill cyclops, seriously. So right now you and Wolverine are the franchise, I hope it gets the attention it deserves, make sure they get it right. We all want to love your movie but we can see the writing on the wall.

...and related comics. So what other characters are in this picture, besides Wolverine? And the guy with the beard, looking down over Wolvie's shoulder: Could his hand look any more fake? They look like something out of an early Roger Corman film. Let's hope it's the lighting and that they look better in the movie. And, yes, I'm pretty amped to see this. Always have.

    Will Deadpool be maskless?

    by lex romero

I really hope that's just how he is at the start of the film and we see him get scarred and in his normal outfit...otherwise, well I'm not going to go off shouting about it or anything, but it would be a completely unecessary change from the comic. Why do we need a "face" actor for the role? Just give it to the dude that played darth maul.

  • Jan. 17, 2009, 6:59 p.m. CST

    by lex romero

I don't think there would be anything wrong with a Deadpool spin off. Not every comic book film has to be some massive budget blockbuster, you could do a great little action film fairly cheaply set in the x-men universe with Deadpool.

No picture or e-mail from Jackman can buy off my rage ...BOYCOTT

    by The Tao of Joe

Jackman is a nice guy, but he works for bad people who shit on our heroes, our culture, and our ideals. Rothman is a disrespectful creep who perverts our favorite comic book movies with crap films. Re-shoots can't fix a broken studio. Fire Rothman now, or no "Avatar" for me, or definitely no "Wolverine."

  • Jan. 17, 2009, 7:10 p.m. CST

I thought the trailer looked really good . . .

    by dragon of sorcerer

Sure, it doesn't match frame for frame all the classic Wolverine comics. . . it doesn't have Japan, and it won't be as hardcore as the Weapon X series. Ok, fine. But the odds are seriously against an R rated Wolvie film, at least for the time being. . . I mean, we didn't even get an R rated Die Hard. My prediction: this film will be as good as we can reasonably expect (especially with the reshoots). Gavin Hood (need I remind you, the man behind Tsotsi) knows how to make movies. And talk about the Dark Knight means they're trying for quality (and possibly Oscars). So, I'm expecting good things.

  • Jan. 17, 2009, 7:14 p.m. CST

    by The InSneider

Screw the bad buzz, the Wolverine trailer looked pretty good to me. That said, this email REEKS of desperation. Some publicist's assistant's intern probably wrote that shit. Gimme a fucking break. The movie will speak for itself. You don't have to butter us up with promises of awesomeness.

  • Jan. 17, 2009, 7:15 p.m. CST

    by A-COD

I'm not sure how closely you follow Box Office numbers. Wolverine should beat Watchmen. It's almost a given. The last two X-Men movies grossed over 200 million. That's the traget for Wolverine, you need some quality to get there. Iron Man did 300 million, that's serious Wolverine needs to be very good to get there. I just rewatched the trailer and forgot how much I liked it. To be clear, I hope it works out. Good or bad I'm there opening night because I love the character but there are not enough people like me to gross 200 million without a movie that makes sense. I really would love all the details on the onset strife.

    by Chuck_Chuckwalla

I trust that Wolverine will be great because just having you in it makes it great. I also think you would be note perfect as John Carter in the upcoming Disney flick, A Princess on Mars. Having read that book last year, I couldn't think of any other actor in that role. Anyway, just my thoughts, take care and I hope to see you kicking some martian ass in the near future.

  • Jan. 17, 2009, 7:20 p.m. CST

    by GetFarkedYouKarnt

He did start out as a good looking bloke then got cancer, and volunteered for the Weapon X program so he could get Wolvies healing factor. This combined with the cancer made him scarred all over and mentally unstable, explaining the need to wear the suit and his wise-cracks. I really hope this is a sub-plot and by the end of the movie we get one shot of him in full costume. Gambit looks a bit naff but I can deal with that. I do have a problem with the muscle shirt on Deadpool though:(

  • Jan. 17, 2009, 7:21 p.m. CST

As for my other comment I meant I am hoping for a movie similar in tone to Ironman rather than TDK ...I am hoping for a film I WANT to see repeately, I am glad I saw TDK, but once was plenty....

If you read the post carefully it basically says if you go and see this movie and make it a hit, then we'll make GOOD wolverine movies for you...lmao....That's is such a con. By all the people who say they're gonna see this movie, I'm beginning to think Rothman was right about us fans. The trailer, the costumes, and everything else about the movie looks about "meh", but yet you have people saying they're gonna rush out and see it after the track record Fox has for these types of movies....PT BARNUM was right, there's one born every minute...I'll wait for the DVD or sneak into, but Fox won't get my money until I see ONE QUALITY movie from them.

the problem is, geeks are a small minority

    by lex romero

Over the past decade due to the rise of the internet, the geek has become a lot more vocal, and lots of film companies have felt the need to talk to us "on our level" do a whole "hey we're geeks to! Yeah we're including that tiny thing from the comics that you're all getting pissed about!" worried that if they don't no one will see their movies. But the box office shows that that is bullshit. For every geek that complains about what they did to venom in spidey 3, there's another 10 people who thought spidey3 was "wicked". <br><br> We can shout and stomp our feet all we want but the fact is we're a small minority and the companies may act like they give a fuck, but they really don't need to. The majority of audiences don't know or care about wolverine's past as long as there's splodes.

    Of course it's spin

    by Mr. Zeddemore

But it's not like Hugh had to do it. Let's face facts, this film is going to make a lot of money REGARDLESS of if we're happy. So the fact that Hugh has sent us an e-mail speaks volumes to the fact that he DOES care about the character. <p> You can give the guy all the crap you want, but he's on his fourth fricking superhero film as the same character. No-one except Reeves got that far.

    by BurgerKing

The X-Men movies have just been badass showdowns, indeed X2 had the most compelling plot, and I'm sure this film is going to retread a lot of that ground, but even if it's bad overall, we've seen that Sabertooth vs. Wolverine fight in the trailer, and thats worth the price of admission alone for me.

    by The Reluctant Austinite

Now I don't feel so unwanted. I've actually gotten really interested in the idea of Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth. He's a very good actor with a hint of danger or anger brewing under the surface. At first my feeling was, "An origin story four movies in? Why?" However, I'm getting more and more curious about this project. Hugh Jackman sold me as Wolverine as soon I saw the cage fight scene in the first film, and he has been the most consistant thing about the series so far. Count me as interested so far.

When did this email really arrive Harry? It is plus 10 degrees here, which is like 50 degrees Fahrenheit for you yanks. That can't possibly be construed as freezing could it? Now if this email happened like 2 weeks ago amid a freak snowstorm and such, it would be understandable. Jackman, you look like a tough guy, don't puss out by saying it is cold! That being said, the Wolvy movie looks cool. Naysayers be damned.

and for a movie for which I have heard nothing but complaints, I expect it to break $2M given the reputation of the characters involved. How much continuity is in here is another matter. Still, out of almost the same sadomasochist desire to be disappointed I'll see this...on dubbed dvd (b/c I can't see it any other way).

...but X-2 bored me to tears. Wolverine cage fighting in bars kept my interest did little Magneto bending metal prison camp gates. I don't think Stallone was doing spin because spin usually comes after bad press, which FOX and Wolverine were getting because of X3 and Rothman's words. I think that's why this would be considered spin and what Stallone was doing as just promotion. That's just my opinion anyway.....and to whoever said Wolverine is not Citizen Kane, wow! That excuse has been used by apologists OVER AND OVER AGAIN on this site. I must have seen that line a million times when Transformers came out. No one expects great Thespian Art, but pure stylistic crap is all we're getting. Plus the action, with the exception of two scenes from x2, hasn't been that great in the Xmen films.

    The Dark Knight

    by antonphd

The success of the Dark Knight grabbed execs by the cheeks and squeezed some sense into their cash register brains. Box office is a function of the quality of superhero film. If news had been that someone like Renny Harlin or, ahem, Brett Ratner had taken over re-shoots, then we'd know that this film was shit and reshoots were an attempt to dumb the shit down to reach what they thought was the superhero film audience. Heath Ledger's real gift to movie watchers is this brief sliver of a moment of clarity for execs... if you make a quality superhero movie... you will make a billion dollars even in the midst of a global economic recession. Who knows... maybe we'll get a few more quality superhero films out of this before the moment passes and the cycle of 'just enough to get by' begins anew. - on a side note, loved Australia.

Sabertooth complaints are getting kind of old

    by armando

You show me a fucking human being that looks like Sabertooth from the comics or the 90's cartoon... A movie will always be a slightly different take on the characters we know because cinema plays by different rules than a comic book. Liev Shrieber and Hugh Jackman are both great actors, im looking forward to seeing the dialog and fighting between these two guys! Lets respect the movie for what it is. If you want the exact thing as the comics, then go read the comic.

it would be cool to see the deadpool mask, but who the fuck would wear a mask like that in real life? It would look about as dumb as wolerines mask. These movies are based in reality just like the dark knight.. Now if the x-men movies had a over the top style like say sin city, then those types of funny costumes would work... I think this movie looks just fine.

    Fuck the fans.

    by antonphd

Are people actually pissed at Rothman for saying this? You do all realize that ALL of these people have utter contempt for their audiences, right? If there is a suit in the film industry that doesn't have contempt it's because he was once an artist of some type and became a suit to stop being fucked in the ass as an artist by suits. Suits are by definition only ever interested in the bottom line... tear away every dollar that they can from audiences. They don't do anything else but get money. They don't care about their customers anymore than any suit in any other industry. Banks don't respect you or like you. Tobacco doesn't care if you get lung cancer. Kellogs doesn't give a shit if you die from food poisoned peanut butter cookies. What is with the shock and outrage over another suit saying outloud that he doesn't give a fuck about the customers? For that matter... who exactly DOES give a fuck about customers anyway? Not your restaurant or your grocery store or your video store or your car dealership or anyone else who's just doing their job and taking home a paycheck. People hate their customers. Generally speaking. I actually don't, but I don't expect other people in my industry to care. Hell, as soon as someone does care along comes someone who wants to capitalize on caring about customers. If you get pissed at every fucker who hates his customers and decide not to buy from them...well... good luck in life. But I suppose that in the big picture... refusing to buy a ticket to a superhero movie because you are pissed at the suit who admitted what everyone already knows is true, well, that's better than refusing to buy food or a house or a car. So, whatever I guess. Just... it's kinda silly to me and I work in video games and you don't know contempt for an audience until you work in the video game industry. It's like the wild fucking west out here.

  • Jan. 17, 2009, 10:21 p.m. CST

For those who dislike Sabertooth's casting and look...

    by HarryWannaBe

First of all...Liev Schreiber is a huge improvement over Tyler Mane. Secondly...given that this is being treated as an origin story for Wolverine, and Sabertooth plays a major factor in that story, it's a pretty big deal that Sabertooth can act and Liev Schreiber has the chops for it. Thirdly...c'mon...having a Sabertooth on screen looking just like he appears in the majority of the comic books he's been in?! God that would make this film a flat-out laughing stock! The only way we'd see Sabertooth with his mask and tights and stripes and big thing of fur around his chest and neck is if we also see Wolverine decked out in his blue/yellow or orange/brown tights and mask (with or without whiskers). And since that's not likely to happen, quit bitching about how Sabertooth looks in this or any other movies. If you can't understand by now that they've taken these movies and created their own continuity and reality for the movies alone, keeping that separate from the comics...then just stop watching the films altogether. And there's two reasons Wolverine looks taller than Sabertooth in the photo...1. they couldn't find a good, tough actor who's only 5'3'' (Wolverine's official height according to 2. there's this little thing called "perspective"...where things that are closer to the eye (or the camera lens in this case) will appear to be larger than things that are further away from the eye/lens.

    by antonphd

Wolverine crying in the X-Men films... man... if I were wolverine THAT would be the personal history that I would want to wipe out my mind to forget. Wolverine isn't supposed to be Forrest Gump. He should be hard... like 007. He should be taking it out on someone or pushing it inside to fester until he takes it out on someone. That's wolverine. Fuck... imagine if Bruce Wayne cried... he wouldn't have to be Batman anymore. You can't let your tortured heroes be in touch with their emotions.

comic vs movie - character's looks

    by houbou

Some of the comments here are about how some of the characters don't look like their comic book version. Well, you know.. the truth is.. while being able to nail the visual down to the comic helps a lot, without the understanding of the character and the ability to act it, the looks don't go nowhere. So far, to me, Hugh Jackman is one of the few actors who incorporates both looks and acting to his comic book character which is Wolverine. Not many other comic to movie heroes have been that lucky. If memory recollects.. Stallone's Judge Dredd was spot on. 90s Punisher Dolph Lungren was actually cool. HellBoy's character is also pretty dead on, although the fact that their is a lot of costume/makeup helps alot. Beside that, I can't think of anyone else who was able to really pull it off. This is NOT to say that Spider-man 1, 2 and 3 weren't awesome for example, but Tobey Maguire doesn't look like the Peter Parker of the comics, yet he did a great job of rendering Peter Parker. Bruce's Wayne character looks not much like the comics, yet, Christian Bale knocks it to the park. And I think the only movie that caused a comic book to change the looks on the basis of it was Superman. When the new "Man of Steel" was reinvented in 1986, John Byrne heavily used the Christopher Reeve's looks to Clark Kent/Superman. Anyways, bottom line, it's always fun to see a movie where the comic looks are well respected, but in the end, the movies that do well, are movies that are plain and simply great movies, because their adhere to the spirit of the character(s), not necessarily the looks. That being said, the next movie Watchmen, might become the best true adaptation of comic to movie ever made. Cheers!

"Wolverine": Logan Vs. Alpha Flight...What Could Have Been???

    by Media Messiah

This film should have been about Wolverine starting out as a member of Alpha Flight, and then going rogue. With Alpha Flight and its badass team leader, Vindicator, after him, it would have made a boss script. I wrote a pass on that once, and it played really well, but it was a X-Men story involving the whole team, Phoenix, and their well known foes, both in government, and the Evil Mutants, but it was cool.

    Dear Hugh Jackman!

    by Anti-fanboy

It is an honor, fine sir, to have you reading my humble talkback post! These words are being read by fucking Wolverine! Holy fuck me!!! OK, I'm cool. Mr. Jackman, Wolverine!, now that I know you care about us fans and read all the talkbacks involving you, may I suggest the one essential element crucial for supercoolness? Ninjas! Your Wolverine movie NEEDS Ninjas, and lots of them. Just like Batman Begins, and just like Frank Miller's limited series. Probably you have thought of this already, badass movie guy that you are. But just in case, you know. OK, and Sabertooth looks nothing like the Sabretooth in the first X-men movie. Um, what's up with that? I'm sure you weren't involved in that decision, but continuity is important, and those guys look nothing alike. But it's cool, since Liev is an actual actor, and can speak lines, instead of just snarling like that pro wrestler. Nice bit of re-casting there, actually. Also, the only love interest that makes any sense is Yuriko. Otherwise this movie will eat mangina. You'll still be fucking badass, but the movie you are in will make X-men 3 look like it was written and directed in 3D by James Cameron and with zero Celine Dion songs, or Leo Douchecaprio. For further tips on making a fan-friendly movie, feel free to email me at Looking forward to any future collaborations!! I check my email often, so expect a quick response! Please email soon! I can really help with your movie. I'm currently collaborating with McG, to help with keeping Terminator 4 cool. It was my idea to bring Christian Bale on board. I posted the idea in a talkback, and he must have read it, and was like, Fuck yeah, Christian Bale! Or we can just keep this on a talkback level. That's cool too. That's how I usually work. You can just stop by occasionally and look for my posts or whatever. So, yeah, OK. Cheers, Mate! Haha. Like I'm Aussie, right?

This is an age-old, practically retorhical(sp?) question, but... really, why do they always lose the costumes and put these comic book characters in lame "street clothes" that make them look like West Hollywood cum-hustlers? I know -- they think that putting Wolvie in a bright Yellow & Blue set of tights would look dumb and they don't want to hide all the pretty star-faces behind masks, but I'm sorry... that's fucking stupid. Obviously there is a HUGE fan base out there that's supporting these books and the corresponding characters, so what kind of fucking dumb-ass knob thinks that these same fans want to have their beloved characters turned into a bunch of fucking "The Hills" rejects? I know that one, too... they don't think there are enough true comic fans out there to make a major movie like this "commerciall viable" so they go lowest-common-denomonator. God, I fucking HATE Hollywood. I'm drunk, and I'm going to be now... Oh, and BTW -- fuck you, Hugh Jackman, you fucking corporate sell-out.

    by Oski

Oh, hi mate, I'm sending you this personal email from Fox's computers and I just happen to have an extremely hi rez promo pic. I think there will be half of a good movie here. The bad half will be stuff like the ridiculous looking Blob makeup, Ryan Reynolds playing himself, shoehorning in baby Storm and Cyclops and Gambit. The last part there screws up the first 2 movies because now how is it that they don't know Wolverine at all when they meet him and now Gambit is like 40something years old when the first X-Men movie takes place.

I can even - just - see why squiddy had to go, but Sabertooth HAS LONG HAIR. How much does a fucking wig cost? And don't give me all that bollocks about it not mattering if Liev's performance is good - they haven't given Logan a Harpo Marx bubble perm, have they?<p>If you don't respect the material enough to even get the basic look of the character right, then you don't get my money. Getting this e-mail from Hugh Jackman is a pretty big deal, guys. Aside from raising a family, playing Wolverine, and getting ready to host the Oscars, the last thing he's got time for is to send an e-mail to a geeky fanboy news site. The studio made him do this because they can smell the bad blood brewing for this project. Rothman is starting to see that we are not already his money in the bank, and the people who keep Rothman in power might be starting to see that he might no longer be the man for the job when it comes to running a studio that controls so many interesting genre properties. by TheGhostWhoLurks

All of the cries of "BOYCOTT WOLVERINE" are making The Powers That Be VERY nervous. So they gave the film's lead marching orders to try to talk down the restless natives before bad word-of-mouth and hard feelings sunk WOLVERINE before it even had a chance to premiere.<p>The only question IS: Are fanboyz stupid and gullible enough to FALL for such an obvious ploy?<p>"Oh, and here's an exclusive photo for you dweebs to take to the bathroom with you, while you pretend that you actually know me."

    Charcters we recognize?

    by the_shogun_gunslinger

I see logan.. ok... who the fuck are the rest of them supposed to be? Deadpool wearing a cut off red shirt and looking like a GI JOE ninja knock off... no mask... no cancer... no fucking point. <p> As long as we're supposed to believe that Mr. Jackman is actually taking the time to read these, let me ask him a question... Why are you, a professed fan of the source material and the EXECUTIVE PRODUCER of the film, letting these character shortchanged? It may seem nit-picky to be so mad about something like that, but why the hell should one think that a character that has been stripped of all resemblance to the source material have any of the same impact? Why should we, the true fans that made these character popular enough in the first place have to accept these changes just so you can get a few extra people in theater seats? Why use the characters in the first place? <p> Lets clear up the mystery as to why TDK was so successful.. it wasn't because it was "dark" or "edgy" or any such nonsense like that... its because Batman is already SUPPOSED to be like that, and guess what? Nolan and co. finally realized this and made an adaptation that drew heavily from some of the greatest story lines from the source material.. The Killing Joke... The Long Holloween... ect. and we the fans knew this. <p> The problem with "Wolverine" is that is isn't doing that. Its taking snippets of a muddled continuity, throwing them against the wall and seeing what sticks, or at least what takes the longest to slide down the wall. We would all love a good Wolverine film. However I just don't see it happening this time around. <p> Quit playing it safe, quit making sub-par adaptations. These characters, even minor ones like Deadpool and Gambit are more than just a name. <p> Then again, I could be wrong... remember how AWESOME Psylock was in X3?... oh, wait..

Hugh in this months SFX Magazine

Hugh seems really cool and says he takes fan feedback very seriously and is really keen on hearing what being said. In the article he said it very important to him and everyone else that this project doesn't come across as just an X-MEN 4, he doesn't really like spin offs, he wants this to stand on it's own two feet. on Deadpool he says the following, "I have to be careful how I talk about Deadpool, because it's something I'm really excited about in this ovie. That's where Benioff did some of his best stuff, how smartly and coolly he brought that character in. Actually some fans might be pissed off, but that's okay. I think they'll understand why we took some creative lincences with him" He also says Liev Schreiber was the first person he wanted cast in the movie and working with him in 5 scenes were the most full on things he's ever done. There's also a brief interview with Lauren Donner who basically states that an X=MEN 4 is very very unlikely due to Fox being uninterested.

    picks arent a bad thing.

    by Obscura

they're not a sign of a bad director, or problems with the story, or anything negative at all. im disturbed at reading some of the comments here that think pick ups are something to worry about. almost all movies have them, and they can often add a lot of life to a project, because they can add a bit of spice to an edit. sometimes you just cant be sure what you want till you've seen what you've got, cut and making sense. if anything pickups show that a director wants to get it absolutly right.

What a lame generalization to make about a lot of people you know nothing about. What do you have in your life? An assistant managerial title at a waning video store? What a joke! You're talking back just like the rest of us. I got no problem with you liking the movie or thinking it will be any good. You have the constitutional right to be wrong. However, don't try to pose and pretend that you are somehow above the rest of the people on this site. It's a total douchebag move. P.S. Here's a bit of a cinematic response to the D.B. move you just pulled:

    by Stormwatcher

Seriously, Its like 5-8 degrees celcius. Its not cold. Now Detroit, New York, Denver ect. that's cold. When the temperature rarely drops below zero, you can't call it frozen. The ducks swimming in front of my window say Jackman's a pussy.

    The Usual Apathy...

    by knobjockey

from the usual suspects. Hey, call me nieve (well, call it me if you can spell it, I never can) but Jackman sending in a message to this site and making clear his own hopes - and in the best way he sounds like a Wolvie geek to me - is fantastic. I'm linked to him via Facebook and he often posts and keeps fans in touch - I think that's cool (many of you nbo doubt don't) Being a long-time X-Men/Wolvie?Alpha Flight reader I think it's a shame they are missing on the Canadian history of the character, with Sasquatch, Puck, Guardian etc, but if this film hits big then there will surely be more to follow. And Harry is right, Logan in Japan a'la the Frank Miller run would be awesome, and I'm sure Jackman and his fellow producers have thought about that. Aesthetically I wish Creed was bigger, more like the 7 foot monster he is in the comics (then again Jackman is about a foot too tall to play Wolvie), and Deadpool and Gambit may just as well be new characters - BUT - this IS another origin movie, so those familiar costumes would logically come later. My only regret with the X-Men films and spin off is that they treat it as if it's all started today, and not taken into account the original group (IceMan Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast and Angel) and added the characters in the correct order. But again, with Wolvie being such a massively popular character, why would Fox wait? Very much looking forward to this one and think it WILL be as cool as the trailer looked, because very little beats Wolvie going berserker.

The Dark Knight is a FLUKE.

    by micturatingbenjamin

Sorry. I know, most times I'm a reasonable cat round these parts. But TDK is a fluke, because a fairly well liked star who died tragically turned out an Oscar worthy performance in a fantastically directed action film. Unless Ryan Reynolds gets dysentery and dies on the way to Oregon, Wolverine will be a great action movie...but NOT The Dark Knight. I liked the trailer fine, and of course, Jackman as Wolvie has my money, even if they do a rock opera about Wolverine's spandex. The guy fucking rules as Wolverine. He's the guy for the role, he IS Wolverine.<p> In other news, micturatingbenjamin has a webcomic about gaming. I know, I know, whoring ain't cool. But I wanted to get the folks here who know me into the comic.<p><p>Check it out and leave me some comments! :)

FOX is preventing leaks by blocking emails to you Harry.

    by Angelus_420

That has to be why they can't email out to you. Did you use another address that might not be connected to this site or you publicly. This is probably one step that Fox has taken in an attempt to stop leaks. Its what I would do. I would get someone to research sites like yours and collect the email domains then block them from inside a company. I wondering if all the companies will start to do that.

    by Brody77

All I can say is "uh-oh". Ryan Reynolds is great, but he couldn't do the action stuff worth a damn in Blade 3. Wesley Snipes got well shafted in that. Was he totally duped or what? Still hoping Wolverine IV is great after the crapness of most of X-3. BRING BACK CYCLOPS!!

    Rothman 2

    by kwisatzhaderach

Claims of a $250 million to $300 million budget for upcoming space epic Avatar are not correct, according to 20th Century Fox. James Cameron's sc-fi movie, which uses groundbreaking technology, will be released in December 2009. Speaking about the project to IESB, Fox co-chairman Tom Rothman said: "I won't comment on the exact budget except to say that as always with Jim [Cameron] everything is misreported, everything is exaggerated, because he is larger than life and so everything surrounding him tends to be larger than life. "While it's obviously an expensive movie, it's not an unprecedented expensive movie and it's not even the most expensive movie we've made at the company and certainly not close to the most expensive movie that's been made in the business recently." He added: "But it is, in absolute terms, a costly undertaking, because it's an entirely revolutionary technology. It will be a movie unlike anything audiences have ever seen. And, genuinely brand new, genuinely unlike anything that has ever been seen and that's hard to do and that isn't cheap." Rothman said the movie might launch a franchise or at least be a blueprint for other movies to be made using similar technology: "Jim Cameron tends to make hits and if the movie is a hit then this is the beginning, certainly for both the use of the technology and the work, it's not going to stop here. So, there's long-term value to it as well." But he said Avatar would be more than just a technical achievement. "It isn't even the technology, it isn't even the look and the world all of which is the coolest **** I've ever seen, it isn't even any of that, it's that it's a great story. "You read the story and you are gripped by every page, it's just a great, original story with tremendously, classic emotional value. So, at the end of the day, that's really what we're here for, to try and make great stories when you can find them. " <p> He was doing ok until that last quote, because Fox under Rothman is not the place where great stories have been flourishing.

I agree with 3DMan...these movies need COSTUMES!

    by King Conan

I mean, these guys in the suits in hollywood are getting so "lost" in trying to make a superhero movie look "realistic" that they have gone from redesigning what we know in the comics to something totally foreign and putrid, ala Singer's Superman sky blue/burgundy swim suit, to now just scrapping costumes completely. COSTUMES CAN WORK! Just like in Dark Knight and better yet just like Watchmen will prove!! Shit Deadpool NEEDS to have a fuckin costume! Wolverine NEEDS TO WEAR THE BROWN 80's costume at LEAST ONCE in this film to add to the fanboy hysteria! Like in X3, the movie was a total mess but at one point it looked as though both the bad mutants and good ones were all wearing the same black leather! And you mean to tell me, its the last film, its already fucked and they can't throw Jean in the Dark Phoenix costume??? They can't have her ONCE do the Phoenix flame????? The people who made Iron Man, Dark Knight and Watchmen actually care about the property and the fans. FOX are just trying to grab some cash.

How much is FOX and Rothman paying you to lie to us about this half assed moneygrab? I've defended you for a long time, my fat friend, but no more. FOX has butchered so many fantastic franchises and yet all it takes for you to give them another free pass is an "exclusive" pic (one that embodies everything wrong with the film we've seen so far) and a song and dance by a nameless PR drone. Yeah, Jackman has a email account. <p> Sorry FAUX, but some of us learned our lesson after X3, AVP, Daredevil, Ghost Rider, Electra, Die Hard 4... ect. ect.

    by Grammaton Cleric Binks

Ryan Reynolds is playing him, correct? Ryan Reynolds played Hannibal King in Blade Trinity, correct? So we have the same actor playing two different albeit minor characters in the Marvel Universe. Using this logic once again I state for the record that the perfect Captain America is James Marsden. Just give him a dye job, and blue contacts if needed. We never see his face except for about two seconds in the last X-Men movie. We've seen him do drama, we've seen him do comedy, and we've seen him do action. He's perfect.

Hugh, ignore the haters. As many have pointed

    by Grammaton Cleric Binks

out this used to be a place where people could debate their love of all things geeky; comics, graphic novels, horror schlock, etc. Now, no matter what an actor or director does for a movie there will be a few crybabies out there going "waaah, I didn't get it my way." Well, this isn't Burger King. I didn't like all you movies. I loved most of them, some were okay, I really did not like The Fountain. The thing is, and I'm sure you're aware of this, is you'll never please everybody. Personally the only actor I can think of who hasn't made what I consider a bad movie is Clint Eastwood. Then again, I've never seen Pink Cadillac or The Rookie. Thanks for taking the time to address us through Headgeek. Give Sly and Bruce a call, and ask them about their experiences on talkbacks. by Grammaton Cleric Binks

Re-read my comments. I don't love all Jackman movies. Van Helsing was fun enough to sit through once as a goofy popcorn flick, but it was nothing spectacular. Just because I didn't like The Fountain doesn't mean I don't enjoy a good challenge in sci-fi. I love Gattaca, and have watched it several times. Now that is a thinking person's sci-fi movie. Contact was great too. I didn't like The Fountain because it just didn't work for me. I got it, I just wasn't into it. If you want a good Rachel Weisz movie by the way check out her and Ralph Fiennes in The Constant Gardener. I'm not saying it's wrong to hate any movie. There are some real turds out there to be sure. I suppose what I'm really talking about is people are saying "this sucks" when they haven't even seen it, and they're not giving any reason other than that. I mean if you really hate a movie let's hear it, but "just because" is an answer my six-year-old would give.

I keep opening emails that were sent over a 24 hour period and they start getting -- well, the tone starts to change. At about email #28 Hugh says, "I don't think Stallone has this much trouble getting ahold of you. Are you out of town or in some 24 hour movie marathon or something?" Then email #42 goes something like, "Look, Harry, I know you weren't a big fan of 'X-Men 3.' I have your review posted on my dressing room mirror just to remind me." By the time you get to email #73 it goes like this: "Listen up Bub, I don't know who you think you are, but I've had a really long shoot in the goddamn cold up here, busting my ass for you ungrateful little "coolies" and I think you owe me at least as much respect as you'd give to Tobey Maguire. I mean that guy didn't even work out for 'Spider-Man 3'!" By the time I got to email #91 Hugh said, "That's it, Knowles, you real life version of the Blob! As soon as I finish these re-shoots I'm coming down there to Texas and I'm bringing my prop claws with me, and mark my words, I'm gonna shove 'em right up your--." Well, you get the idea. Sorry, Harry, if I had checked my email earlier I might have been able to clear this up. And Hugh, we'll just keep the contents of email #100 between you me.

That is what 80% of these tb's are about, all you see is hate being spewed forth by a bunch a whiny babies who don't get EXACTLY what they want in their films, so they bitch and moan about it, all you ever hear around here is how crappy a movie is gonna be. Now, I admit to being a cynic sometimes, but not all of the fucking time. I always get responses to my posts that tell me how I place myself on a bronze throne or some dumb shit like that. That is not the case at all, I don't think my opinions or beliefs are any better than anyone elses. Excuse me if I get a bit annoyed at a bunch of wusses who are supposed to be movie geeks yet spew forth more hatred for everything than I have ever seen. Because it annoys me doesn't mean I think I am better, I just don't get it. With the exception of Avatar, just about every upcoming film talked about on here is going to suck according to most of the people in these tb's. I love to sit back and listen to the garbage that comes out of the brains of people on here. Some of it is legitimate, and I don't disagree with every negative tb here. Many on here have defended their right to pre-judge a film based on footage, trailers, production stills. Ok, fair enough, I personally reserve judgement until the final product is seen, but to each his own. In the case of Avatar, I don't get it. James Cameron has not made a feature film in almost 12 years. Yet because of his track record, it is assumed that his next film will be will be super fantastic amazing. Hmmmm.....let's see. George Lucas (and no I am not saying that GL is as good as JC before i get flamed for that)had a good track record with the SW trilogy and the Indiana Jones trilogy, so when it was announced that he was making a new trilogy, I am sure most of us expected great things from it, and look what happened. While I enjoyed the prequels, they were not anywhere in the same league of greatness as the first, and most agree the prequels were not what they should or could have been. So while I agree that there is good reason to think that Avatar will be good, I personally don't feel, at this point anyway, that there is enough material to anoint this film the crown jewel of the 21st century. Give me a trailer, some better stills, something, ANYTHING to make me think this will be great. I am sure I am going to get some insults thrown my way, but I really don't care, I am just expressing an opinion, nothing more.

    by Koji_Kabuto

We all are behind you. Just make the best Wolv film you can. You have a good director, if you are a producer you can just ask Fox to let this guy alone and give them a good cut before they put there BS notes in. Once Rothman gets fired in the next coule of years, whomoever gets the job will be a lot easier to work for, and then we can start praying you get Singer back for something X-Men related. If Fox screws this one up, there won't be any more X-Spin offs at least until someone finally fires Rothman. Remember a few years ago when Eisner was in charge of Disney?, people were walking off Disney because of him. They fired him, bring Pixar in and walla!! The Mouse House is the Mouse House again. I just wish they would do the same at Fox, fire all those dumbasses screwing every good property they have. X-2 is the last good movie they made, and if it wasn't for Cameron, I don't know what the next movie I will look forward to from these knuckle heads. Oh well at least they have Fox Searchlight doing a good job at getting kool movies to distribute. Anyway, good luck HJ!!

I don't think anyone here can be blamed for generalizing their complaints (like 6 year olds) In fact, go re-read the threads for when this film was announced. We all were hoping for great things, saying "I'll wait for the trailer at least".. Well guess what? the trailer came and it looks cheap as all fuck. Random characters thrown in, reused sets, weak action, miscasting running wild in the streets and costumes that look so fucking cheap ANY of us would be embarrassed to even wear them for Halloween. Tell me, with a straight face, that if you wore a cheap red muscle shirt, grew a goatee, spiked your hair and carried a sword you would even have the gall to call yourself "Deadpool". A retarded chimp would laugh at you. Yeah, Sabertooth is shorter than Wolverine, has short black hair, press on nails and vampire fangs. Are you FUCKING HIGH?!?! <P> I apologize for insulting your taste but the fact that you thought Van Helsing (another movie that took great source material and raped it half to death) was "fun", well my friend, its hard not to.

guess my admiration for Liev Schreiber is overriding the component of my brain that says "hey, that doesn't look like Sabretooth." The thing is the poster as we all know does not look like the comic characters. But, I thought the trailer had a to of action in it. Okay, action alone does not a movie make, I get it. As far as my tastes go, look at it this way, my music taste ranges from Ozzy to Enya. My movie taste is pretty much the same. Celebrate diversity, and all that good stuff.

Binks, I'm as guilty of headbanging to "Sail Away" on more than one occassion, usually while high as hell, but that point is somewhat unrelated to this. <p> There is a difference between Action and GOOD action. There is also a difference between creative license and just plain lazy name-dropping. ALL of the X movies have been guilty of both some sub-par action (watch the finale of X-Men 1 and tell me you weren't bored to tears) and straight up lazy adapting (Rogue might as well have not been Rogue at all). Though well made and with good intentions, the X films have never embraced the actual comic universe for anything other than names. Show me an issue Pre-X movies that used a black and silver color scheme, I DARE you. FOX has not came up with an original design post-Matrix and it shows in both their revenue and reception. <p> I don't want to destroy anyones enjoyment of Wolverine, and who knows, i might be pleasantly surprised.. but i will not pay to see it. <p> see, a trailer is like a presentation and we, the fans and paying filmgoers, are the potential investors. If we're not impressed, we don't pay. it's as simple as that. this "well, go see it anyways and THEN decide attitude studios have taken is utter bullshit and with the economic disaster we are all living in, we are wising up to these tactics. We don't come to love the NAMES of these character, but the characters themselves. Wolverine could be names Wolf-Fart for all i fucking care, as long as he acts and LOOKS like Wolverine. <p> Imagine a Batman movie where is doesn't wear a cowl. Imagine a Spider-Man movie where he has wings instead... might as well be The Above-Average Fly-Guy... There are no exceptions to these rules. Do I expect blue shoulderpads on Wolverine? No, but an attempt to make him or ANY of these characters, who we fans have supported with our hard earned dollars for DECADES, to at least slightly resemble their comic book counterparts. <p> All we fans want is RESPECT. TDK delivered that to us in spades and we came in droves. The general public got a taste of what we have known all along. Just because a character appears in comics doesn't reduce their legitimate worth and legacy.

    Dear Marvel Studios,

    by tibbar

So... FOX has already ruined a lot of the serious interest in your X line of characters. It's a complete mockery, as any fan of a good story who has respect for the characters will tell you. But you know this, hence your developement of your own properties with the intent of having a very controlled Marvel film universe. Do yourselves and the fans a favor. After this stinkbomb goes down the commode, let the X licence sit for a few years. Do your Avengers film, do a couple Iron Man sequels, maybe the next Spidey flicks... just kinda let these awful X films fade away. Make us hungry to see Wolverine again. See, right now, I'm just flat out sick of seeing Jackman with the claws. There is no surprise, the thrill is gone. So let is cool off. Then, when the time is right... you do what you did with Hulk. Get some people who TRULY love and understand the characters and storylines, and you put them behind the wheel. Give us the original X-men lineup, and build INTO the whole blue and gold team thing. saving Wolverine for a second X film would be a good move, similar to Nolan choosing not to put Joker in Batman Begins. It gives us something to look forward to. Too much Wolverine has become a bad thing... give it some time and really think about this. Go oldschool. Give us the blue and gold costumes. I think I speak for ALOT of us when i say that i WANT to see the comics come to life, not some Heroes-esque version of the X-Men. Three words: GO BALLS OUT. Give me an 8 foot tall rippling Juggernaut ripping entire walls out. give me Iceman freezing an entire Sentinel as it crashes to the ground. Give me Professor X actually fuckin' it up in a battle with his eyes closed. Give me Apocalypse. Give me Archangel. Give me Savage Land. Genosha. The Acolytes. All the classic stories i remember growing up. If you can do that, Marvel, you will have erased the awful memory of these stinkburgers for good. Think about it.

Batman 's costume inTDk isn't as close to the comics as singer's superman. and no, i dont thinkWatchmen will prove you correct. non comic fans will take one look at those costumes and think they're lame as shit. I'm for costumes for guys big on symbolism like Superman, Batman, or Capt America, but it just doesnt make sense that a character like wWolverine will go out and buy some spandex to fight crime. only in the realm of comics.

enslavement to the source material isn't always a good thing

    by BMacSmith

i think some of you should relax a little about it not looking like enough like a comic. and mentioning TDK only hurts your argument.<p> TDK's Joker looked nothing like the comic, and take away the cape and mask, and Batman looks like some kind of special forces ninja. plus you don't have lame characters like Robin stumbling in just because he's such a core part of the comic Batman.<p> Rogue in the X-men movie is just more interesting than the comic version because she's not invincible. You do realize the Rogue in the comic is basically Superman with the added bonus of stealing powers? you would have to go into a long side story about how she became Superman (a pretty bland story) and her character wouldn't fit into the movie setting at all.<p> The comic book movies that work are the ones that boil the comic down to their essense and rebuild from there. The ones that work DO take some liberties.

As a matter of fact, fucking YES. If these filmmakers aren't confident enough to show the colorful clothed universe their characters come from, then they can go shit into each others anuses. Did anyone complain about Spiderman blue and red tights? Or Superman? These S&M/emo suits are far faaaar worse than yellow spandex. When hugh jackman utters those "ironic" words, he is using smart satire in criticizing their S&M leather fetish and the double-headed dildos and chains they keep tucked away, as well as the token gimp in the xavier mansion.

The main argument I would make for the black costumes is that all of the X-Men have gone through like 20 different uniforms since their inception. Plus, I always thought the uniform look in X-Force, original X-Men, and Morrison's run were a better fit conceptually since it emphasized that their a team. More than the motly crue look of the 90s.

Ok let's see, Spider-Man blue and red spandex, Iron and red armor...Superman/Chris Reeve version BRIGHT BLUE/RED/ can work..if you're not fuckin lazy and take the time to design a costume that closely resembles the comics but translates to the screen well. Thats what fuckin hollywood costume designers are for. FOX is just a lazy company that doesn't give a shit. Hmmm....p.s. I don't know what fuckin Watchmen trailer YOU'VE seen.

My advice to all comic book film makers

    by marcspector

It has always baffled me that this approach is not used in comic book movies. A comic book is almost a storyboard already. It has words and pictures already prepared for dramatic and storytelling effect. Why not take maximum advantage of this? Arguably, you could shoot directly from some of the better comics. I know it is not a 1-for-1 match from comic to film but even just using the comic as the outline of the first version of the story might work. Why not try that? If it were me making a comic book film, I would take a series of pre-existing classic comic book stories and use them as my version 1.0 storyboard/script. Cut out the panels, thumb-tack them to a large cork board and see if it works as a movie. Maybe they work better shuffled around. Maybe some don't make sense at all and need to be dropped. Probably I need to fill a few gaps and tweak some dialogue. I might do those on Post-It notes on my hypothetical cork board and see if I could preserve enough of the other panels as possible. Less work for me, right? Inevitably the studio is going to say we need to make some changes. Can't do much about that but I can leave in the parts that still work. The point is you start from something that once worked. You make changes when you HAVE to make changes but you don't just assume that you need to re-invent the wheel. It seems most studios look as comics solely as built-in marketing but it is much more than that. It is built in characters, story, camera angles, pacing, costumes, dialogue, storyboards. All I am asking from you is, please, be lazy. If you are the costume designer for the Wolverine movie and someone asks you for Deadpool's costume, you Xerox a page of the comic and hand that in. The fans will love you for it. If you are the writer on some comic book movie, you transpose an issue of that comic. You are not a hack. You are a hero. And if you are the storyboard artist on any of these comic book projects... Dude, if you are even uncapping your pen, you are doing it wrong.

    by schnipple

When did he become a respected enough actor who can raise the cachet of a comic movie by being its villian? He's okay as an actor. He is far from great. He's got some indie credentials but not enough to make up for the fact that he is totally miscast as Sabretooth. Just that forced idea makes this movie preposterous. Philip Seymore Hoffman by that logic would've been more appropriate. They should've first made sure the characters at least looked right. Like Mel Gibson should always have been Logan. Not this dancing fool from down under...

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 9:19 a.m. CST

marcspector -- your proposed approach is shit

Why the fuck would any writer want to cut pages out of a comic, tack them together, and base their film off that? If someone told me that is how I had to come up with a script I'd tell them to go fuck themselves.

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 9:39 a.m. CST

Is this movie taken from the What If universe?

    by crazybubba

what if all the characters were gay? based on this photo and the Russian bathhouse one from last time it sure seems that way.

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 9:40 a.m. CST

    Liev Schrieber as Sabretooth...

    by rbatty024

is one of the few reasons I still have some hope for this film. Judging from the previews he looks to be a real asshole. Although, I wonder how his portrayal of the character will vibe with the awful version of the character in the first film?

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 9:41 a.m. CST

    by BringingSexyBack

It's only a movie! Of course we don't get personal about it. My hate is directed at Rothman. I'm sorry Jackman must suffer as collateral damage but such is the ways of war!!!!!

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 9:46 a.m. CST

I really don't get what the fucks the problem.....

....the first 3 films are absolute butthole. This will probably end up being the best of the 4. So fuck off.

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 10:15 a.m. CST

    Because Danny...

    by ScottinDC

...quite a few of the sad sacks that make up this board simply don't understand that you often have to deviate from the original narrative for the purpose of the big screen (remember all the whining about Peter Jackson's purported narrative changes to the LOTR movies? Fans freaked...and yet, those films came off ok). So all of you saying that the characters look (and sometimes act) differently than the "source material" (which was a comic for fucksake), get OVER yourselves. Pull out the tampon and quit your crying...if you think this will suck, then don't go...or go spend another $8 and re-watch Paul Blart, Mall Cop again. I'm sure you'll find it "a real hoot".

Hugh Jackman is a class act

    by ArcadianDS

...according to anyone who has worked with him. If you disagree, google up a quote for us. While he's appeared in some pretty bad films (Van Helsing), if you objectively look at his contributions, you could say that he did his best to salvage what he was on.<p> For the most part, I think he does a great job. He was brilliant in The Prestige.<p> Also, give the guy some credit for reading what fans have to say - specifically, what the most cynical (non)fans have to say, and trying to reach out to them. He's like the Australian Obama! CAN WE TRUST HUGH JACKMAN TO MAKE A GOOD WOLVERINE MOVIE?<p> <b>YES WE CAN</b>

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 10:29 a.m. CST

    to the 'wolverine purists' here

    by ArcadianDS

piss off and take a bath. An authentic Wolverine movie would serve to accomplish only one thing: expose to the general public how terribly juvenile comic books actually are. Seriously, you want Hugh Jackman in a rubber bumble-bee suit with eye-ear-wings (???) that stick up a foot from his scalp? Seriusly, you want the world to know that this is the kind of Ritchie Rich quality comics you're reading at home on Friday night?<p> punch yourselves in the face. RITE NAO.

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 10:41 a.m. CST

We owe it to Hugh to view this film.

    by ganymede3010

The only reason I say that is because when X1 was announced, all of us concluded that there isn't anyone alive that could accurately portray wolverine (Besides Jack Nich-but he was to old). And out of no where comes Hugh jackman to rest our fears because he nailed the role. Plus, he did us fans a favor by casting Gambit. Having Gambit in a fucked up timeline is better then having no Gambit at all.

    The only reason Hugh Jackman

    by schnipple

sent this email is because Australia BOMBED and everybody around him including himself is real nervous. The cash cow could disappear if Wolverine is a dud. He needs to prove he can open a film or else he becomes another Colin Farell. All hype but can't close the deal with the public on opening wkend b.o. He and the studio could give a fuck about this thread only in so much as it is just another indicator that Wolvie the limp dick might open under twenty five mil...

Why can't you idiots grasp that concept. They are not angry Giorgio Armani models from Milan. I didn't. I don't pay stuff when I can see they ruined it from the get go. I saw a few minutes of it on cable but was not interested. I paid to see Spiderman though, and also Batman, as well as Ironman, but NO, I will not pay my money when they falsely advertise it is an X-men movie when it is not. That is my only power as a disgruntled fan and I exercise it every chance I get. So you and Scott can go fuck yourselves. Go away. If you got nothing to say, go away. You're annoying...

with its original source. All of them veer away from the comics in certain areas. Some more than others. You don't like it, good for you. Don't watch. But don't sit there and think that the X-Men movies (which were not that good IMO) are the only ones that veer away. Happens to all of them. I wanted an original X-Men movie. Not going to happen. Never. Read slowly. Sound out your words. Take notes. It might help ya when you read posts. Then you just might understand.

    and about the costumes

    by vaudeville villain

while i'm not a comic purist by *any* stretch of imagination, i do wonder why some of the studioheads feel the need to drastically change the look of a given character. as schnipple stated above, the fact that a guy goes by the name of wolverine, has claws, can heal nearly instantaneously, etc. is fathomable... but it's when we add spandex that the proverbial line gets crossed? or hell, it doesn't even have to be spandex, just make it something that *somewhat* retains the spirit of the original design (something spider-man did brilliantly). and spider-man's outfit is about as wacky as they come, though it still worked on film.

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 12:13 p.m. CST

Suddenly I'm a troll when I call out your ignorant ass? <p>Its very simple....just make up a new line. Don't go with the stock "30 Year Old In A Basement." You can do better than that.

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 12:14 p.m. CST

    by mrfan

No. Didn't care for them. <p>And I think you are right. Hugh should star in more romantic comedies.

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 12:16 p.m. CST

    The costume debate...

by ScottinDC really connected to the Director's vision of whether he's working from 'source material' (ie Iron Man...with changes to the origin but staying close to the work) or transliterating plots and characters (Batman Begins & The Dark Knght). Each approach has its place; but faCE IT: THE X-MEN movies weren't all that great....the acting was sub-par (Halle Barry was awful)...some of the CGI (especially in X3) was rough and the characters tended to be a bit one dimensional. So, why all the crying about the new movie when its likely to suck about as bad as the originals? If you enjoyed the originals, you'll probably like this movie...if you didn't, then you'll likely hate it. End of story.

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 12:22 p.m. CST

So you agree the first 3 X-Men movies sucked balls. You agree this Wolverine movie will most likely suck balls. But you're telling everyone not interested in the film to SHUT THE FUCK UP? So what....we're supposed to sit here and discuss the upcoming Superbowl? What the fuck do you mean? This is a talk-back you AIDS ravaged cunt. This is a place for assholes to bitch, scream, crack jokes, have a laugh, vent, argue, whatever the fuck they want. Because you think that all Wolverine haters should shut the fuck up-- you seriously expect people to listen while you go off on your rant about how pathetic comic fanboys are? What the fuck is your stance? I don't get it. You just seem like a whiny asshole. This place is filled with whiny assholes, but again-- most are clever and actually give me a chuckle from time to time. The bitching here will continue, and you will most likely always be a prick with a flimsy opinion. So fuck off.

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 12:22 p.m. CST

    oh, i agree, ScottinDC

    by vaudeville villain

at this point, they could throw wolvie in brown/yellow spandex, give deadpool his full body outfit/mask, and this movie would still suck fetid moose balls... a simple case of too little, too late. i was just making a statement about comic films in general, using wolvie as an example.

    schnipple had it right

    by sokitome

It's all about Jackman's box office draw. AUSTRALIA is a major flop and I don't think Jackman has had a stellar hit outside of the x franchise. Batman, Iron Man, and Spiderman deviated somewhat from the source material but still KEPT A LARGE PART OF THE COMICS INTACT. LIke the costume. YEs Batman's ninja/combat/specialforces/orwhateverthefuck suit was still a suit with pointy ears and a cape. NO real life modern ninja(if they exist) or navy seal would wear a cape and pointy ears into combat, and the JOKER still wore fucked up face paint and ragged weird looking clothing. Spiderman and red and blue and the black suit was the bad guy. The color scheme and look of IRONMAN pretty much looked like the 50 million variations of the suit in the comics. SPIDERMAN 3 REALLY VEERED away from the source material with 3 and that was horrible, but the success of the first 2 was able to give it a big pay day by fans saying "oh I just want to see venom" EITHER WAY! I just can't believe there are people defending this movie considering the track record of FOX MOVIES and ROTHMAN...I thought the general consensus by EVERYONE on this site was FOX could go fuck themselves. I guess a spiffy edited trailer and a supposed "email" from a Hollywood star can change our minds that quickly.

shucks, you really hurt me. Seriously bud. I miss the days when you were insightful (with your acerbic wit)...these days, you're just yawn-inducing piss and vinegar bud, I'm not saying don't debate the film...or it's merits. I'm saying make the discussion about something relevant..not whether Wolverine wears Spandex or not (which will NOT be the deciding factor in whether the film sucks or not). This board used to have interesting discussions (not always but on occasion) about actual issues affecting movies (and rumors gossip and what not)'s quickly devolving into fanboi bitching about costumes and whether Michael Bay/Bret Ratner sucks more. Surely you've noticed. Anyway...I'm onto other AICN articles...this one has grown boring (as has your petulant vitriol).

Hugh Seems Like A Decent Guy But...

    by CellarDweller

This movie still smells like the Blob after a 2 week camping trip without no showers or deoderant. The photo makes it look like a low-budget, Fox TV show based on the Wolverine character. The trailer was OK in my opinion, but didn't get me all pumped or give me substantial confidence that Rothman and Co. won't "f" this up; which sucks b/c I'm fond of Wolverine, the X-Men and like my headline states, Mr. Jackman seems like a stand-up guy. I hope he can work some magic somehow, but my gut tells me this is going to be another X3 and maybe not even as "good" as that half-baked effort. Fire Rothman NOW!!!

    by sokitome

Hey Hugh hook me up with Kelly Hu and then I'll reconsider paying to see Wolverine. Seriously Hugh if you really are reading these posts(which I highly doubt but what the hey), I fucking LOVE the Xmen. My growing up years I was an avid comic book collector and always loved the Xmen, even when the snobbier comic book collectors like independent/whiny/pre-emo/selfangst comics. I even loved you as Wolverine, even though I found X men 1 has meh, X men 2 as decent, X men 3 has a horrible abomination. But you as Wolverine was great, even though you are a bit taller than the character, but that's alright. BUT ROTHMAN is a dick. His "dickness" or "dickiness" has tainted the F4 franchise, Xmen, DIEHARD, and a lot of other great things and I just can't help feeling butt raped again if I pay for this movie and it SUCKS ASS! Then ROTHMAN will rake in another hit movie and be proven right and then we'll continue to get shit movies from shit FOX owns.

    Ryan as Deadpool

    by Kampbell-Kid

I kind of wished we'd see him in a kind of familar kind of assassin outfit... Ryan seems perfect for this insanely batshit crazy character, but problem is when I see Ryan on screen in this trailer I don't think Deadpool I think - Ryan Reynolds holding a sword and acting like deadpool. Strange, I never found myself so nitpicky or purist before until one of my favorite characters is getting "modernized" that I start feeling disconnected from it. Oh well, have to wait and see how it works on film.

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 4:52 p.m. CST

    Oops rephrase that...

    by Kampbell-Kid

I meant, when I see Ryan on screen in this trailer I don't think Deadpool. I think Ryan Reynolds holding a sword and acting like himself. Then again, Julia Roberts played herself in Erin Brockovich and stole the oscar from Ellen Byrnsten's Requiem. So I guess typecasting a wiseass like Ryan is perfect to identify with Deadpool.

    by thegrayghost

Hugh Jackman seems like a pretty cool guy to have sent this email. He's always has been a great Wolverine - look and acting-wise. However, some parts of the trailer looks a little too over the top and that usually indicates lots of flare with little substance. The stunt and special effects at the end with the flipping of the vehicle and the subsequent launching into the chopper just looks a little hokey to me. Bad effects perhaps? Lack of funding? Sabertooth does look decent though ... a huge improvement over the X movies. He looks a lot more interesting as a character than that boring 2D hairy grunt. I hope this movie will be great. The lack of costumes bothers me too. I would've liked to have seen Wolverine and the other characters in costume. As much as I thought X-men and X2 were pretty good, it always bothered me that they were so minimalistic with the costumes. It never felt fully like a X-men movie because of it. Personally, I've always liked Wolverine with a mask. He just looks so badassed and cool in the comics like that. I don't know how it would look in live action, but with Reeve's Superman, Spiderman, Ironman, and Hellboy doing justice to the character's looks, it has to be possible somehow. (I want to include Batman, but I still don't think they have it quite right yet. I think Nolan's Batman is "ok" looking and I love Bale in that role, but he just doesn't look intimidating or awesome in that costume. Batman just looks so much better in the comics in the gray, black, and blue cloth. I don't know. Maybe it's the crappy hand-to-hand fighting choreography that makes it look bad. He just doesn't look like he can really hurt anybody.) The look of a comic book character is so important. The last Hulk was a decent movie, but the fact that the Hulk was all CGI and the ending was boring, kept it from being great. Yes, yes, the story and directing, etc. etc. is in question too, but it'll be hard to comment on that without seeing the movie first. I also don't trust Fox at all due to that debacle that was called X3 and their Watchmen greediness. I'll still watch it with fingers crossed though.

...and then stick him right back into another "team", this one stuffed with second-rate types compared to the X-Men? Won't the result just be a lot of screen time for people that no one really cares about?<p>I hope this movie is great, and if great, does well. But I think people can sense when something like this is a step back. If they went from the epic scale of X3 to a downsized, grittier, simpler Wolverine (as a commenter above said, 'Payback' with claws), I think people would buy it. But this looks like it's awkwardly in-between--smaller and cheaper than an X-movie, but still trying to be an X-movie (costumes, special-effect superpowers, etc). It's neither here nor there.<p>I think Jackman makes a great Wolverine, and I defy anyone to look more like Wolverine than he does in the photo above. It's the studio types surrounding the movie that I don't trust. Once something becomes a hot property, the first thing they do is overstuff it with distractions, take their eyes off the ball, and drop it.

    I can't believe this...

    by Sinistaine

I hate Huge Ackman as Wolverine, and I hate this Twilight inspired picture with a much shorter Sabretooth behind a 6'5" Logan. This will fall much short of the tracking numbers, guaranteed. Cool director or not, this movie will fail.

Agreed. Why couldn't we have had Frank Miller's japanese story? Wolvie vs. Ninjas = Geekoid wet dream!

    Jackman calling you "mate"

    by theplant

Pathetic attempt as trying to be "in". There's a bank account that separate Jackman with the rest of us, and since we never see him in LA bar offering rounds like Kiefer Sutherland does, it means you're not a MATE, er, PAL.

Bruce Willis on AICN about Die Hard 4

    by ominus

Its the same situation, like then. <P>Obviously,Fox ordered Jackman to send this email in order to calm down the concerned fanboys and negate any future negativity about the film until it is finalized. <p>Well, since Die Hard 4 was turned out a crap Die Hard movie (its a good action though),Bruce Willis was lying and was the lapdog of the studio,i suppose the same can be said about the final shape of the Wolverine movie. <p>I understand why the leading actors try to defend their movies after some negative news, but please dont try to insult my intelligence. <p>for example,i still remember when bruce willis said in the DH4s talkbacks, how better was the new movie from the original one (yes he said DH4 was better than DH1,i just cried out from my laughs. <>anyway mr Jackman i admire you as an actor,u r truly a star and born to play Wolverine, but i am not going to watch at the cinemas.not after the crapfest XMEN3 was,and not after all these bad news and rumours about the movie.sorry.

I don't give a shit what any fanboy says, I thought the trailer looked bigger than anything we've seen in the X-Men movies so far. I don't care about any behind-the-scenes bullshit, all I give a damn about is will it be a good movie...and based on what I've seen so far, I'm willing to give it a chance, especially if it helps Wolverine get to Japan next time.

Compared to the Die Hard-movies, it's funny......

    by Movie_Grinder

If you compare the first three in each franchise, the first one's ace, the second good, and the third a snore (that occasionally wakes you up with loud FX). I thought Die Hard 4 was cool for bringing it back to the original concept. Let's see if Wolverine can capture some of magic that was in X-Men 1. And RESPECT to Hugh for dropping a note to the movie-fans visiting this page (if the letter really comes from him and it wasn't written by some guy at the studio trying to salvage a ship-wreck even before the ship has left the harbour - just like Lucasfilm did when they placed an embargo on Clone Wars).

    Poor, poor Hugh....

    by kingralphuk

"I am stoked by the positive response to the teaser..." funny that when 99% of the 'response' I've seen says it looks like dog shit. Sorry Hugh Action your time is up, Australia and now this. I hope you have plenty in the bank coz your career is going ka-blam!

I daresay Watchmen has the potential to be profound, if Snyder can really portray the pathos of the characters without boring us with slo-mo. It sure looks pretty, but I think I'll go with the more visceral, direct approach that (hopefull) Wolverine will deliver. Looks reminiscent of the first X-Men, which is one of the best comic book adaptations out there.

Mr Jackman - emails contact re -screenplay

    by mustang12

Hello everyone, I am writer/screenwriter with a passion for the American West and horses .Just found this website as I'm looking for direct contact email/address for Mr Jackman. I am not exactly an expert in the Xmen series. Yet, I highly admire Mr Jackman's work in his more dramatic, romantic works film and stage. I have worked on a drama based in the American West, highlighting the plight of the wild for which I have had him in mind for the lead. I had a chance to hand him the screenplay in person at the handprinting ceremony last April in LA. If somebody out there has a direct contact, I would appreciate to be able to follow up on this. Mr Jackman, if you happen to read this email, would you be so kind as contacting me. I am still waiting to hear your feedback on this work, which I feel you're perfect for. IB

Are you the same yahoo who tried to contact Mr. Willis? As the agent representing both of these fine actors, I have to echo Orcus' response, but a bit more emphatically: <p>Fuck no. <p>You have no pizazz, no style, no substance. You lack "it".<p>Try again another time when you grow a set of balls. I'm talking big balls, like buffalo balls.
