Fleet Foxes Is SNL’s Last Musical Guest Of The Bush Era!!

Published at:  Jan 17, 2009 9:43:37 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Rosario Dawson hosts, presumably in a bid to squeeze a few more dollars out of "Seven Pounds." Former SNL head writer Adam McKay is about to launch “You’re Welcome, America” on Broadway so maybe Will Ferrell will drop by as well?

Harmony-happy indie rock quintet Fleet Foxes is the musical guest. They sound like this:

Sketches I enjoyed from last week:

11:30 p.m. Saturday. NBC,

"I love love love DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-ALONG BLOG as much or more than just about anything I’ve seen this year." -- Harry Knowles

    by fivezero

I don't. Fleet Foxes are pretty okay. I can dig it. Now I hate to be THAT guy, but I find Rosario Dawson to be a satanically hot. AND I also hate to be the first guy to cite Alexander, but here I go. Alexander. FEW woman in Hollywood have a vicious body like that AND are fairly adequate in the movies they're in. C'mon! Who has a body like THAT? Really! Well, besides the redhead in Mad Men. That's my wife.

No, Obama will clearly hurt SNL

    by catlettuce4

SNL political satire only works (f at all) when it makes fun of the President. However, the producers of SNL are not going to have the cajonies to poke fun at the First African-American President, especially given the clear political loyalties of most of the writing staff. Instead, you'll get toothless stuff like that "I'm cool" skit from right after the election.

There was a review on here recently - must have been for Seven Pounds I guess - in which she was referred to as one of the most beautiful women in the world, or words to that effect. I just don't get it. She does absolutely nothing for me personally.

    by madbomber

I gotta disagree with you there, catlettuce4. There will be ways of finding humor in Obama even if they aren't necessarily obvious yet. I found the Obama Cool sketch from several eps ago to be hilarious and a good starting point for how to deal with him, at least while he is in the honeymoon phase. Just let him fuck up (note: I am a fan of the man), and there should be plenty to mine.

    Flim Springfield re: Clintons/Obama

    by catlettuce4

The Clinton example tends to actually prove my point more than not. SNL is never particularly good at satire based on political positions. Instead, its most successful presiential bits are based on obvious and broad comedy archetypes: Ford was clumsy, Reagan was old, Bush Sr spoke funny, Bush Jr was stupid...and Clinton was a fat horndog. In other words, caricature. However, caricature as a form of comedy is way to radioactive when dealing with the first black president. There is, simply put, no way in hell that SNL is going to dare go for a cheap laugh that might open them up for charges of racism even if unmotivated by race. So you'll get, at "best" stuff like "I'm cool" which will give his supporters a chuckle but no actual comedy.

    by eyegore

It did make me laugh just a little. It was just too drawn out. Too many 'Gilly's from the teacher and a little too much mugging for the camera, but otherwise I kinda liked it. But the other characters she does have to go. Just kidding. Not really. No seriously, never again, please. And the other one who tried to one-up everything that's ever said to her is kinda funny until she takes it way too far and it completely stops being funny. And she does it every time. The just kidding not really character is beyond any hope and should never come back.

    by emeraldboy

more then ever. We are all living in grim times but we all need a laugh. laughing at the bankers expense is where the satire remergence will begin. It will be hard to laugh at obama. and anyone who does will be regarded as a racist. There are rumours(unsubstantiated ones) that there is more to the relationship between Oprah and obama. There is an article about it in todays sunday independent Living section. Oliver callen has been tearing our leader and govt to peices as a bunch of druken bozos. www.rte.ie/2fm/nobnation. there was one sketch where described them as them as the drinks cabinet.

But now she seems to just be doing annoying, repetitive characters with goofy faces. OK, now it's stabbing with pencils. So, the next thing will be increasingly violent, then? Ugh. I liked Doogie's show, but this one wasn't so great. I appreciate Rosario-cleavage in at lest three sketches, though.By the way, I always believe bad audiences not getting jokes ruin some things. I find their success bewildering and baffling. They are friends with kelly osbourne. I am not touching them with ten foot barge pole. The osbournes are returning to tv. in what is called a variety show. it will include comedy sketches. ITV have really gone to hell if they are looking to the osbournes for entertainment. That Jon Culshaw impersonation of ozzy got really tired very quick. I turned on the tv and saw a bunch of actors running round the place with large cardboard cut outs of Ozzy and and families Heads. and that was a kids show apparently.

While I think that part of the lack of making fun of him could maybe be attributed to the dem/lib leanings of TV folks, but I also do think that he is too boring to make fun of. Or at least, he doesn't have many mannerisms to play up, etc. I don't know if he makes for a good "character" yet.

    Fleet Foxes v. Arctic Monkeys

    by rbatty024

I find the Fleet Foxes are infinitely more talented. The Arctic Monkeys were just cashing in on the last decade or so of Brit-pop, but Fleet Foxes seem to know their rock and roll history and do a good job of combining it in their songs. Of course, the Arctic Monkeys are still popular in the UK and we will see where the Fleet Foxes end up.

I don't wholly disagree Bizarro Jerry

    by catlettuce4

...my earlier posts tried to make clear that a general sympathy for Obama's politics was only one factor that made it difficult for SNL writers to make fun of him. The other factors are his race and the fact that there's no readily identifiable "trait" they can use to caricature him at this point. I don't think the Obama-friendly writers at SNL see him as "boring," however so that's not going to be the hook.

    RE: Fleet Foxes

    by mr. nice gaius

I managed to catch their performances last night. As someone who has never given them a listen (despite the indie-press hype), I have to say I was rather impressed. It's a real treat to see a young band build their songs around vocal harmonies as opposed to indulgent instrumentation or production. The vocal arrangements (and songs) were pretty damn cool. That being said, I thought it was pretty obvious that they are heavily influenced by Crosby, Stills, and Nash (Young). I wonder how many young hipsters even know who those guys are...

Thats the problem with indie press music..

    by emeraldboy

I have lost count of the amount of bands that have been hyped from one week to the next. I am all for bands sending there demos to radio stations. Dave fanning started all this over 30 years ago in Ireland when he was on 2fm. Ireland has enormous musical talent. Its indie scene has produced some fine talent. but nowadays its getting too much. Three current Irish indie bands are Fight like apes, Meath band ham sandwich and Irish rap band(dont laugh at that idea) Messiah J and the expert. Indie press tends to bombard the irish public with these groups to the point where by the end of the week, there is a whole new lot of bands by the next week. Indie press does gig guides. so you can follow them. They almost always end up in the us. where they crack. and you never hear from them again. Everyone is always looking for the next big thing.

If you want something indie, there are better choices out there

    by garbageman33

MGMT, TV On The Radio, Cut Copy, Band of Horses, Frightened Rabbit, Bon Iver, LCD Soundsystem, The National. And that's just off the tip of my head. If you really want to introduce your audience to something new, why just regurgitate what the press has already introduced them to?

For the most part SNL is good at choosing musical acts.

    by flim springfield

Some "hot" pop acts, some on-the-verge acts, some lesser known but critically acclaimed acts. I wouldn't mind seeing more music and less crappy sketches (or better yet- less commercials!)

    Hammond's being wasted

    by bizarrojerry

His Cheney impression is one of the most boring ones he's ever done. They need to find more for him to do. Is it his choice or the show's choice that we barely see him anymore unless a very specific impression is needed, usually Clinton. As for that Cheney sketch, it was repetitive, obvious where it was going and just funny. That may have been one of their more blatant liberal-leaning sketches, since the theme was, "How can Cheney not be sorry for everything he's ever done?" Even if you believe that, it sure didn't make for anything funny. Though it made me think of Jan Hooks' more fun Diane Sawyer.

    Good Question garbageman33...

    by emeraldboy

I can only speak for what I hear on irish Radio. There was a music conference in Dublin last year or the year before. Louis Walsh complained that no radio station will play westlife songs. but his substantive point was a good one. There are loads of musical talent in Ireland and there wasnt a platform for them. Irish radio was he said full of wall to wall chart music he said. he has a point. Irish Radio stations are dominated by the playlist which comes from the record companies. Which has been replaced by the digital download chart. non mainstream music is called indie or alternative. and you have to wait untill the evening on today fm to hear. or on Jenny Houston's show on 2fm. also on the eveing. todayfm(owned by Billionaire dennis o brien) and 2fm which is owned by rte. are the only two radio stations to go to irish festivals.

    90 minutes of dreadful filler

    by thegreatwhatzit

A disaster of Irwin Allen proportions, demonstrative of the show's decline; the forfeiture of Obama humor (zip zingers) portends a grim future for SNL. This sinking ship is about as funny and poignant as an Olsen Twins video.

    by tbransonlives

During the gilly sketch. At about the 4th time Hader said "Gilly" and she said "what" I said "if they do it one more time i'm done and taking it off the tivo" and they did. Maybe I'll try the show again next year.

    by fart_master_flex

What was with the man ass shot on SNL? That came out of nowhere and wasn't needed. Everyone knows that it is Fred Armisen's ass that we are looking for!

    by turketron

Saw some people above mention them. Never really understood the hate for the band, I like their "Favourite Worst Nightmare" album, dammit. Seems like I tried to listen to the previous one and didn't like it as much for whatever reason. Whatever. Welcome to Omerica bitches!

    There was a program...

    by emeraldboy

there to celebrate frys 50th birthday. those two characters are a lot of peoples fave. The best program on over tv at christmas, beside wallace and gromit was the fab Blackadder doc. They all seem to be doing well and are all well off. except ben elton. It was a very interesting program about the writing process behind the show. There will never be another series of blackadder. Fry spends his time between the UK and his very expensive home in the hills of South africa. Laurie as we know is a star in LA. Tim McInerny is a respected actor. Curtis set up Live 8. and ben elton blew his credibilty on two of the worst musicals ever. We will rock U and tonights the night. the rod stewart musical. at the very end you got the feeling that while they were chums at the start. none of these people would want to spent more than a minute locked in room together ever again. The meet up to meet their adoring fans and answer questions, sign books and dvd. none of these people have to ever work again. if you saw Frys south african villa, you would know why. He part owns a village. He is semi-retired. He does QI. but hasnt done much other work. Rowan is also very wealthy and is currently starring as fagin in Oliver.

    Oh and tony robinson..

    by emeraldboy

is a history and archaeology expert. and was for a while was head of Equity and was involved in the labour party. Was the ending of blackadder plain sailing. no according to tony robinson. There were two sets. one was at the bbc. and one was in another location. They all had to leave the small theatre where they had recorded the audience bit. race across town to the BBC. And when the cast and crew got there they saw the somme set for the first time and according to tony robinson it was terrible the rushes were even worse. John Lloyd according to himself sat there with his head in his hands in despair. They gave the footage to the shows editor, who slowed the footage down, then re-edited the music and put the drum beat at the end. and added the still of the poppy field. that was how the end of Blackadder goes forth came about.

Stephen Fry played a recurring character on Bones a couple of years ago. I don't think I've seen him in anything more recent. That reminds me, I should check to see if Peter's Friends has been released here in DVD yet.
