Slash has a peek at the Wild Things of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE!!!

Published at:  Jan 16, 2009 6:52:30 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Spike Jonze's WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE is easily among the top films of 2009 that I'm dying to put in front of my eyeballs. That it scares some folks on an emotional level and isn't the SAFE and COMMERCIAL film one would expect from a studio -- well, that absolutely thrills me. When Mori saw the test screening, ages ago... back when there were basically zero digital effects and they were still trying to grapple with how they were even going to solve the effects challenge... he loved the film. That that was well over a year ago... kills me. Now, /Film has our first glimpse at the menagerie of the Wild Things and they're wild indeed - give em a peek...

Here's where the wild things are!!!

The studio suits will fuck this movie up in every way possible if they are allowed to. They would rather release an empty, lifeless, utterly mundane piece of non-offensive shit that parents will drag their kids to because it's "safe" instead of something that could be a classic. 'Cuz they think the movie-going public is just like that asshole in that SEINFELD episode who said: "I like things I don't have to think about." Ninnies! Morons! Morons, all of them!

I grew up with this as my favorite of child hood books & was scared shortless that it'd be a botch of a job...this pretty much flushes that notion down the toilet. Honestly I wanted Gilliam to have a hand in this...but it seems like ole' Spike's got his finger on the pulse all the way to the heart. The book was so open to possibilities & it appears that Jones is going to do everything possible to turn this into an open ended story that seems to be a bit expansive...what with the desert shot & all that...or island dunes...whatever that is...it looks sweet. Now...meself being an ex-skater that still likes to push when given the opps...my heart skipped beats when I saw the Girl line of boards...probably have to make that purchase!

Wild things look good, but not diggin' the "real world"

    by emperor_was_a_jerk

As a child, the thing that always struck me about the book was the fantastic nature of the illustrations. The pages that transformed Max's room into the realm of the wild things is beautiful. The world Sendak created was fantastic, eerie and other-worldly. This movie could very well be great, but I am not diggin' the idea of putting these fantastic creatures in a real world setting. It makes it appear that Where the Wild Things Are... and where they live, is OUR world. Not the world of a child's imagination.

    The creatures look lived-in.

    by rbatty024

They look like they have been weathered by nature instead of hidden in our imaginations. This kind of look is lost in the CGI world. Take a look at the original Star Wars trilogy where it looked like a place where people actually lived and then take a look at the new trilogy where everything was shiny and new.

Not to start a "thing" or be an apologist, but the "shiny and new" look of the prequel trilogy was on purpose. It is supposed to be in stark contrast with how the universe turns out after 20 years of Imperial rule.

The closer analogy from Lucas' mouth, was that the new trilogy is the curved, crafted and chromed cars of the 30s to the 50s. The original trilogy which takes place later is the more toned-down, no flourishes, more boxy cars of the 60s and 70s.

Which I think is fine, but he didn't carry it off. If all the fanboys didn't 'get' that, I'd say he failed. But the analogy does make sense. I'm not disagreeing with you at all, just offering an analogy straight from the horse's mouth.

And back on topic, I'd say give it a chance. If Jonze nailed the characters' look so well (and so far Sendak seems to be happy), then I say he's earned our patience in seeing how/if he nailed the tone, and the look of the world. Maybe it IS more appealing to Max at the start, but as time goes on...

Don't bother trying to explain the differences in the two trilogies... it will only lead to heartache and pain, just like Foreigner said. Additionally(not to you guys), we certainly don't need any cynical children's references about this film(Where the Wild Things Are) from the talkbackers, I'm looking forward to it standing on its own. Trust Jonze and the Henson Creature Shop, so far each has produced much quality.

just one comment about the star wars analogy, maybe its just me but i always thought the reason the prequels look so shiny and new compared to the OT is because they not only take place many years earlier but also take place in more upper crust parts of the society. the OT follows the "poorer" people and rebels so it makes sense that they look all used and are basically falling apart.

Hollywood like to take books like the Harry Potter books and cut half of them out to cram them into 90min...why not take a kids book, cram a bunch of crap into it to make it longer? I'd love for this movie to be good, but it is going to suck. No fault of Spike or the animation, the story/plot (or lack there of) is going to kill it.

This Spiyke Joenze bullshit version of the classic children's story is a pile of crap.
I can't believe all you dummies are going to fall for the PR and believe that the movie is going to turn out cool. Haven't you learned your lesson yet?
They're taking a kid's book that we all loved when we were young and making a grown-up's version of it. That isn't what should be happening here.
These jaded mo-fos are ruining perfectly good material by putting their own craptastic sensibilities into it. God, I hate when assholes do stuff like this.
And now Where The Wild Things Are will be ruined for an entire generation, maybe two. It'll take that long before someone with true ability will be allowed to revisit the source material and make it into a respectful movie adaptation. Sometimes I HATE HOLLYWOOD!

Emperor is right on about the visuals!

The world, the "WHERE", if you will, should not be the real world we all live in. It should be a fantastical world crafted from a child's imagination. What we get with this crap is not what Sendak intended. You need only follow the friggin' illustrations, you knuckleheads! Why is that so damn difficult to understand?

Sendak has (somewhat) approved of the film

    by scottindc

...or so his posts imply. Maurice Sendak himself has signed off on the film (albeit in tyically cantankerous manner...he's always a difficult person). As far as whether it should've been moved to a more fantasy-like world, possibly but the images themselves look interesting (fantastical spots albeit real ones). It'll be interesting to see if they can pull it off despite all the negative buzz.
