Slash has a peek at the Wild Things of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... Spike Jonze's WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE is easily among the top films of 2009 that I'm dying to put in front of my eyeballs. That it scares some folks on an emotional level and isn't the SAFE and COMMERCIAL film one would expect from a studio -- well, that absolutely thrills me. When Mori saw the test screening, ages ago... back when there were basically zero digital effects and they were still trying to grapple with how they were even going to solve the effects challenge... he loved the film. That that was well over a year ago... kills me. Now, /Film has our first glimpse at the menagerie of the Wild Things and they're wild indeed - give em a peek...
Here's where the wild things are!!!

Here's hoping this movie finally gets a release in a form that Spike is happy with. Can't wait to take my daughter along!
-
So he's not persona non grata then?I was beginning to think you guys had fallen out or something...
-
will hopefully be amazing. Just looking at the emotion coming through on just these shots - I have little doubt now that Spike has pulled this off.
-
I think I heard that this is going ahead as SJ planned, and I hope so. Can't Wait!
-
Here's my early plea to save this flick. Sound to me like Spike pulled it off. Can't wait to see the finished version.
Caution, spoilers: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/35768 -
I'm gonna start listening to Linkin Park and drinking Mountain Dew just so I can buy one!!
-
I wouldn't expect anything less from Jim Henson's special effects branch.
-
The detail in texture, especially compared to that test footage that leaked onto the internets over a year ago. I'm amped for this flick!
-
...Yeah. That's suprising considering Jonze owns a skateboard company. Wow, Warners must fucking hate this movie, to give it such half assed non promotion.
-
It's not Beverly Hills Chihuahua, that's for sure.

im intrigued.

This, Inglorious Basterds and Avatar are the three movies I'm most excited about this year.
-
Friggin soulfull motherfuchers! Damn.
-
Jesus who would have thought it would be Spike that brings film back from the the fucking abyss of shit looking CGI in movies.
-
Exactly like the book only realistic... and furry!! Looking forward to this one definitely!! Looks like Jonze will hit this one out of the park.
-
just fucking beautiful. Can we have Spike make Calvin & Hobbes next?...please?
-
aside from the flat faced sock puppet one, which seems to be the...most faithful? but still, very stoked for this movie.

wow, this is incredibly disgusting.http://tinyurl.com/7a3jhg

More for Adaptation than Malkovich but because its less green screen, more animatronics blend.
-
Looks like WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. That is very, VERY nice.
-
...in a good way. The stills we've seen so far are simply incredible.
-
Before seeing these latest stills, I wouldn't have believed it possible. Now, suddenly, Calvin & Hobbes done this way springs to mind vividly. Hobbes done in the same way as these beasties is an astonishing thought.

Somebody threw a snowball at Satan

I can feel it!
-
That's not a diss, it actually does..
-
I was kinda worried after that CGI test leaked a year ago or so, but man... this really looks great.

This Is One Story From My Childhood I Still Remeber Vividly.
-
The studio suits will fuck this movie up in every way possible if they are allowed to. They would rather release an empty, lifeless, utterly mundane piece of non-offensive shit that parents will drag their kids to because it's "safe" instead of something that could be a classic. 'Cuz they think the movie-going public is just like that asshole in that SEINFELD episode who said: "I like things I don't have to think about." Ninnies! Morons! Morons, all of them!
-
shut the hell up. They look great of course, and I have faith in Spike Jonze, but that kind of blind adulation before a film even comes out is just obnoxious.

Been rooting for this ever since that great test footage...

I have great respect for Spike Jonze and I loved Sendak's book when I was a kid, so this movie has me very excited. Those exclusive images Mori shared a while back had me practically jumping with glee. And now these... wow. The look of the Wild Things is spot on. Just incredible. I'm even more excited than before now!
-
Of course, it could be the scotch, but that desert shot is note-perfect.
-
POLBLART MOLCOP!
-
This will give kid's fantasy films the kick in the juevos they've so earned. As others have pointed out, we haven't seen stuff with soul like this since the 80's (and of course it had to be from Henson). Hopefully, Fraggle Rock won't suck.Looking forward also to Dahl's Fantastic Mr. Fox, directed by Wes Anderson.
-
those are great pictures
-
..and i wasn't terribly interested in this movie. after seeing those pictures though, i am SOLD. i've been a Jonze fan ever since he wrote for a BMX magazine called "Freestylin". i knew back then that there was something different about the guy, and his movies reflect it. some of those creatures look downright frightening, and i think this movie just may be something special.
-
You Gen-Ys and nostalgic Gen-Xers think the 80s were something...
You're living in a fucking special time now. Enjoy it.
The computers will be taking over soon. -
He's what the kids want these days. He's, how do you say, BOX OFFICE GOLD!
-
...like they are channeling the spirit of Jim Henson. I think I am in love.
-
best jim henson workshop creations i've ever seen!
-
good screen adaptation. With beautiful pictures, but very little dialogue it may not translate well, and end up being this year's Cat in the Hat.
-
What? You guys think Scorcese is busy? (Losers.)
-
I'd pay money to see Calvin gun Hobbs at the end and watch rats eat his fucking face... Cue the oscars.
-
Thank christ WB are letting Jonze do his thing. Fingers crossed he'll get it right. It's looking good so far.
-
Brian Froud meets Sendak, awesome. High expectations for this, love Jonze's work.
-
Jonez never really floated my boat before but this looks special.
-
hangover.
-
It's cool that they're mixing it up.
-
but these creations, and the one shot in the desert, do look very well done.
-
Oh MyLanta!!!!! Wow...can't say anything more than that...well...actually I can. This is B-E-A-U-tiful!!! I grew up with this as my favorite of child hood books & was scared shortless that it'd be a botch of a job...this pretty much flushes that notion down the toilet. Honestly I wanted Gilliam to have a hand in this...but it seems like ole' Spike's got his finger on the pulse all the way to the heart. The book was so open to possibilities & it appears that Jones is going to do everything possible to turn this into an open ended story that seems to be a bit expansive...what with the desert shot & all that...or island dunes...whatever that is...it looks sweet. Now...meself being an ex-skater that still likes to push when given the opps...my heart skipped beats when I saw the Girl line of boards...probably have to make that purchase!
-
those stills look absolutely stunning. like many others, this was my favorite book as a child... one can only hope the sum of the parts can do it justice.
-
YOU SHALL NOT PAAAASSSS!
-
Chills. I don't gets those often, nowadays..
-
Looks like this might be the next Dark Knight. I knew you could do it, Spike!
-
One exclusive out of how many stories. Mind you, we still have ScriptGirl. *rollseyes*

Wild things look good, but not diggin' the "real world"
by emperor_was_a_jerk
As a child, the thing that always struck me about the book was the fantastic nature of the illustrations. The pages that transformed Max's room into the realm of the wild things is beautiful. The world Sendak created was fantastic, eerie and other-worldly. This movie could very well be great, but I am not diggin' the idea of putting these fantastic creatures in a real world setting. It makes it appear that Where the Wild Things Are... and where they live, is OUR world. Not the world of a child's imagination.
-
They look like they have been weathered by nature instead of hidden in our imaginations. This kind of look is lost in the CGI world. Take a look at the original Star Wars trilogy where it looked like a place where people actually lived and then take a look at the new trilogy where everything was shiny and new.
-
Loving it.
-
huh?
-
Not to start a "thing" or be an apologist, but the "shiny and new" look of the prequel trilogy was on purpose. It is supposed to be in stark contrast with how the universe turns out after 20 years of Imperial rule.
-
The closer analogy from Lucas' mouth, was that the new trilogy is the curved, crafted and chromed cars of the 30s to the 50s. The original trilogy which takes place later is the more toned-down, no flourishes, more boxy cars of the 60s and 70s.
Which I think is fine, but he didn't carry it off. If all the fanboys didn't 'get' that, I'd say he failed. But the analogy does make sense. I'm not disagreeing with you at all, just offering an analogy straight from the horse's mouth.
And back on topic, I'd say give it a chance. If Jonze nailed the characters' look so well (and so far Sendak seems to be happy), then I say he's earned our patience in seeing how/if he nailed the tone, and the look of the world. Maybe it IS more appealing to Max at the start, but as time goes on... -
Can't wait for this.
-
Hope so...
-
Don't bother trying to explain the differences in the two trilogies... it will only lead to heartache and pain, just like Foreigner said. Additionally(not to you guys), we certainly don't need any cynical children's references about this film(Where the Wild Things Are) from the talkbackers, I'm looking forward to it standing on its own. Trust Jonze and the Henson Creature Shop, so far each has produced much quality.
-
The development hell this film has had to go through is ridiculous.
-
It looks exactly like I would picture it. The best part is that they are NOT using CGI backgrounds and sticking to actual environments.
-
to see the stills pictures of these creatures. But I want to see them in motion before I pass judgement. It looks good, don't get me wrong, but I want to see them moving instead of pictures. That being said, RELEASE THIS DAMN MOVIE NOW!!!

-
I love this book(even though its like 6 pages or something) and have been excited about this a while. Can't wait! And I want one of those boards!
-
...and this isn't even the ScriptGirl talkback! Banner day!
-
I know some aren't, but I am pretty excited for this..
-
...using the money I won't be spending on 'Wolverine'.
-
just one comment about the star wars analogy, maybe its just me but i always thought the reason the prequels look so shiny and new compared to the OT is because they not only take place many years earlier but also take place in more upper crust parts of the society. the OT follows the "poorer" people and rebels so it makes sense that they look all used and are basically falling apart.
-
I dig the look..I like the giant costumes rather than overuse of CG. I hope they leave this a bit edgy and dark and don't totally neuter Spike's vision.
-
Just a gut feeling. Turn this into an R slasher movie directed by Rob Zombie and I am in! But really I have a bad feeling about this, hope it works but... They had better release this during the holidays for the best bang for the buck.
-
thats why he's gone.
-
These are stills from some skateboards. Are the Wild Things done like Jar Jar Binks or like Gremlins 2? Oh, and by adding anything more than Max dancing a little more with the Wild Things, and they've crammed their cock up Sendak's book. I know! Let's pad out "the Very Hungry Caterpillar" for 90 minutes!
-
Hollywood like to take books like the Harry Potter books and cut half of them out to cram them into 90min...why not take a kids book, cram a bunch of crap into it to make it longer? I'd love for this movie to be good, but it is going to suck. No fault of Spike or the animation, the story/plot (or lack there of) is going to kill it.
-
This Spiyke Joenze bullshit version of the classic children's story is a pile of crap.
I can't believe all you dummies are going to fall for the PR and believe that the movie is going to turn out cool. Haven't you learned your lesson yet?
They're taking a kid's book that we all loved when we were young and making a grown-up's version of it. That isn't what should be happening here.
These jaded mo-fos are ruining perfectly good material by putting their own craptastic sensibilities into it. God, I hate when assholes do stuff like this.
And now Where The Wild Things Are will be ruined for an entire generation, maybe two. It'll take that long before someone with true ability will be allowed to revisit the source material and make it into a respectful movie adaptation. Sometimes I HATE HOLLYWOOD! -
The world, the "WHERE", if you will, should not be the real world we all live in. It should be a fantastical world crafted from a child's imagination. What we get with this crap is not what Sendak intended. You need only follow the friggin' illustrations, you knuckleheads! Why is that so damn difficult to understand?
-

-
...or so his posts imply. Maurice Sendak himself has signed off on the film (albeit in tyically cantankerous manner...he's always a difficult person). As far as whether it should've been moved to a more fantasy-like world, possibly but the images themselves look interesting (fantastical spots albeit real ones). It'll be interesting to see if they can pull it off despite all the negative buzz.
