Hrmm... Extensive reshoots for WOLVERINE... Is Fox financing it with some new glowy blue money, you think?

Published at:  Jan 16, 2009 5:28:47 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Hot on the heels of news of a settlement in Fox's legal action against Warner Bros over WATCHMEN we get news (courtesy of the good folks at Collider) that massive reshoots are underway in Vancouver at the moment.

Not that that's totally unexpected. We heard nothing but nightmare stories about the initial round of photography. Gavin Hood had a rough time, let's just leave it at that.

But it seems that Hood is in charge of these extensive reshoots, so maybe there's some hope for the project. Gavin Hood's a good director and Jackman's great in the role, so I want this movie to work and if it takes a shitload of reshoots and Hood getting his way maybe they can save this project, which I had honestly written off.

What are your thoughts?

    Either way

    by superjim

I hope that Wolverine is more of a reboot of the series than a continuation of the massively shit X-Men 3. I know it is obvious to all, but I want to say it anyway: The X-men could have been an AMAZING set of comic book movies that were constantly changing cast, crew and style because of the huge amount of back story and characters. They could have released a new movie every few years or so for the next 20 years and still had a massive archive of material to pull from.

    ratner ruined this series

    by juror number 8

when he decided to take everything brilliant about singer's first two x-men and watered it down to a special effects heavy mess. x-men had the potential to become one of the most prolific comic book movie series of all time and then ratner and batman begins/dark knight came along and ruined those chances. don't get me wrong, i'm not really a hard-core ratner hater. rush hour is a good enough movie, but the last two were awful (really roman polanksi?!!, you decide to get back into acting in ratner's rush hour 3!) i did enjoy after the sunset and red dragon is way better than ridley scott's hannibal (though manhunter is probably the second best lecter movie behind silence of the lambs.) anyway, sorry about the diatribe, i know this post had nothing to do with ratner. i'm still holding out hope for redemption of the x-men series because jackman is great as wolverine and liev schrieber is an incredible actor. i had the chance to see him in "talk radio" on broadway and he was incredible. this guy totally deserves more mainstream work. gavin hood is a good enough director, tsotsi and rendition were solid movies, but after seeing the lackluster trailer and now this news... i dunno if i'm as optimistic. however, that last scene in the trailer with wolverine flying from the car to the helicopter looked fucking amazing, so who the hell really knows until this thing comes out.

Wolverine Reshoots??? They Are Rewriting The Whole Movie...

    by media messiah

....all to make it more Hard in tone so it can compete critically with Watchmen. They are also going to make the film more epic and flashier. Do I have inside information??? No, it is just easy to predict. As I said in my posts over the last several weeks, Fox is worried about Watchmen competing with its X-Men Franchise and spin-offs, beginning with Wolverine. Wolverine as it stands, will be attacked by critics as being flimsy compared to Watchmen if Fox doesn't beef up the material all the way around.

    by industrykiller!

The character he began in the first X-Men was kind of like Wolverine and by the time the unwatchable X3 hit he was outright just playing Cyclops. I love jackman as an actor but he doesnt have the natural edge of Wolverine nor does he have the quiet warriors spirit. ANd they can reshoot this all they want, it's still gonna be total crap.

Comic book fans have only themselves to blame

    by continentalop

For to long comic book fans would show up to any comic book based movie, no matter how good or bad. Studios got the idea that the die-hard superhero fans were a bunch of retards that would show up for anything, no matter how badly they butchered the source material. Hell, half the time they would praise a change as something as unfortunate by necessary, or come up with excuses as to why the studio couldn't stay true to the source material (I call this the Galactus Defense).
Maybe now after Iron Man and the Dark Knight, comic book fans realize that some studios and film-makers will stay true to the spirit of the comic, and also feel like they don't have to see anything starring a character from their favorite comic magazine. Maybe then studios will treat the genre with a little more respect instead of just a way to make a easy buck.

found that the movie had too many "real" elements in it and needed more CGI. "That's what kids want today," they said. "We need more CGI backdrops and physics-defying stunts. Also, Wolverine seems a little serious. Can you lighten him up a bit? Maybe give him a teenage sidekick?" These are the reshoots.

20th Century Fox and all the Voldemort, Sauron, and Palpatine bastards that run the studio (namely Rothman) can go to hell. I am not watching a single genre or tent pole movie they make until Tom Rothman's head is on a proverbial pike-staff. I want that bastard rubbed out. All he ever did was cash in on the money Bill Mechanic earned for all the risks that didn't pay off until Mechanic was fired, sadly. Now that the Mechanic money is starting to dry up (i.e. Rothman has chased away all the talent that Mechanic nurtured), that studio is a lame duck. Avatar or no Avatar, if the 20th Century Fox logo is in front of a movie and Tom Rothman is still the head of that company, I won't be seeing it.

Not saying you're an ignorant studio suit or anything, but that sort of "You'll all be watching it anyway!" rant is one I've seen many times before.

And shock and surprise, methinks it's no longer true.

I think there's plenty of people out there like myself who mean what we say, when we say we won't go see shit. Latest Punisher movie, for example. Even more so when it comes to television, because there's other things to do of an evening rather than sit in front of the gogglebox.

Hence the declining ratings of such once nerd-friendly shows like Heroes.

    by general_mortimer

Look at Lord of the Rings, they cut the films, saw what didn't work and got the whole cast back to for a couple of months to craft and fine-tune the films into the epics we know today.

More films should have reshoots rather than taking the "Well, what we got sucks but oh well, shooting is over let's release it anyway and spend our money on overhyping it until people are sick of it!" attitude.

You are completely right. The blame should not be on Rattner's door. Part of it should go to Fox who needed to say: 'hang on, this might be rubbish if we hurry it - let's wait until we find the right guy'. But given how tough it must have been to assemble that amazing cast, that would have been quite a decision.

I am starting to think that Fox and the Wolverine movie are jinxed now. The trailer looked like a homoerotic advert for mens aftershave. "Wolverine pour homme" It just looked real duff. and gay. and i still havent bought into Jackman being Wolverine. Hes too polished and Hollywood jetset to be seen has a nasty rough savage feral Wolverine. A young Mel gibson would have nailed it. but hes too old for it. The closesr to the actual character would be an energetic Gerald Butler from "300" being a total anti social bastard. THAT is wolverine. Not a softy big girls blouse that is Jackman.

...but 20-odd years ago, during his PLATOON-to-WILD AT HEART period, the only person I saw playing Logan was Willem Dafoe. He's short, rough around the edges (with cheekbones designed for the signature muttonchops), can be convincingly menacing and bad-ass, and had the perfect "bub" voice. And back then, they might have actually let him go berserk and tear motherfuckers to shreds. Instead, we have gruff-yet-cuddly and not-afraid-to-cry Prof. Logan, played by a 6-foot-plus musical theater actor who just looks ridiculous when he tries to look angry. Seriously, that shot of Jackman jumping up out of the adamantium tank or whatever it is in the trailer was roll-on-the-floor funny. He looked like James Frain after falling into a life-size Masters of the Universe Hordak Slime Pit.

Good question. I'm not sure it was reshoots, but I know TITANIC went all over budget and schedule. Not saying it turned out a masterpiece, but it certainly wasn't the failure many predicted. Ditto Jaws. I know that in telly world, there is a brilliant drama from the 90s called OUR FRIENDS IN THE NORTH. They shot and edited the first episode, and then junked it and reshot the WHOLE DAMN THING. So it does happen. Also, we know that Sam Mendes junked the whole of his first week shooting American Beauty.

I don't know, maybe Fox is going for camp with Wolverine. It actually resembled something that would have been parodied in the opening of Tropic Thunder. Anyway, the trailer brought to mind the worst aspects of Mission Impossible 2. From what I've read this is pretty much an unofficial Alan Smithee film, i.e. it was ghost directed by someone other than Gavid Hood.

Hugh Jackman is a good actor - until he really has to emote. His emotional scenes are unsubtle and sometimes outright forced, which is what happens to actors who are used to projecting their feelings through dialogue and song to the back of an auditorium. Jackman's rise in film was quite sudden, and he hasn't had the opportunity to grow out of a lot of his 'theaterisms'. And, I just don't buy him as Wolverine. There's something missing from his characterization of Logan, and it's not his physicality or the writing. There's just nothing genuinely tough about him, and Wolverine needs to be exactly that. Of all the Marvel characters who need the Method treatment, it's Wolvie. The actor needs to make audiences feel the fucking rage. As much as I hate GLADIATOR as a film, Russell Crowe brought the rage to Maximus. Mel Gibson brought it to Mad Max and Martin Riggs. Jackman just doesn't have it.

Do a re-boot with Gibson or Crowe as Wolverine.

    by orbots commander

Get Mel Gibson to both star in AND direct a Wolverine re-boot movie. Gibson still has the physicality and the rage. And since Wolverine is essentially a few hundred years old, Mel's age wouldn't be a problem. That would frackin' rock the house.

It had logic holes you could drive a truck through. What the fuck was Nightcrawlers origin anyway? He remembers the tank and the base in Canada - did he get created there?! And one more time, lets look at the illogic of the end: Jean grey is inside the helicopter. A wall of water id about to drown them and the plane cant take off. Jean has to GO OUTSIDE THE PLANE to start the plane(!) and hold back the wall of water at the same time. She starts the engines, lifts the plane and lets go of the wall of water drowning herself. And there's no good reason AT ALL she could not have done it from inside the plane. Idiotic. Dont get me started on how they killed Cyclops (who was always a dick) and replaced him with Wolverine as the lover trying to save her at the end just so they could have a cool effect of his skin melting off and his healing power restoring it while he climbed to his doomed love. Wow. "I'm the Juggernaut - BITCH!" mmmmhmmmmmm. No real feeling of warm fuzzies about this project at all. (Well, to be fair - at least she wasn't showing movies in her stomach.)

    X-Men+Fox=Bad Filmaking

    by elvispresleehorsleyharveyoswaldoprahwinf

These films do not hold up well. The entire franchise will someday be completely re-visioned and re-filmed. They look dated already and the cheesy soundtracks on X1 & X3 by Michael Kamen do not help.
If you enjoy these films good for you but I'm guessing you are wearing fanboy blinders and will someday realize these are ludicrously bad movies at best mediocre leftovers from 1990's.

Reshoots and rethinking the power of geek thinking.

    by sithtastic

I have mixed emotions about reshoots. To my knowledge, I have never heard anything possitive about them, which tells me someone at Fox was at least paying attention to dailies that needed work. That said, given the outpouring of Fox hate here, I can only but wonder how well Wolverine is going to do exactly. The character's origin story was one of which I was really skeptical, but when I finally read it, I became a convert to learning just who Wolverine really was. That said, given the epic they're trying to shove into the preview were you to make THAT into a three hour film, I just might indulge Fox. However, we all know how this is going to end don't we? The casual fans (of the films) and their gfs who have a monster crush on Jackman will flock to see this film...and get an episodic, poorly reasoned, continuity-in-shambles mess. Is it too late to call it X4: The Disappointment?

    by castoutthiswickeddreamthathasseizedmyhea

This is good news actually. On a purely commercial level, Fox has undervalued the Wolverine property from the beginning. The Wolverine brand is second only to Spider-Man among Marvel heroes but Fox treats it as if Wolverine were some third-tier hero who can't sell a movie on his own. Just look at the trailer. There are two movies here. One could be the next Dark Knight. The other is the next Fantastic Four. One is an epic-feeling, emotional story about a guy who submits himself to government experimentation to wipe away his memories of the decades he's lived through, the other a crass attempt to fit in as many characters as possible and introduce spin-offs. It's the same with the title: X-Men Origins. They're using a Wolverine movie to test the market for more X-Men Origins films, as if Wolverine is on par with Magneto, Gambit, Deadpool, etc. This is Wolverine, one of the top four most popular superheroes. Fox should be pulling out all the stops. They should be treating this with the same seriousness as The Dark Knight and Watchmen, not using it as a Trojan Horse to introduce Gambit and Deadpool spinoffs that will never happen. (Look at FF2 and the Silver Surfer.) Hopefully these reshoots are a result of Fox realizing that Dark Knight and Watchmen have taken the superhero movie to a new level, and will move this away from the FF feel of the Gambit scenes and more in that direction.

I know Hollywood is known for "movie magic", but since the damn thing is being filmed in Canada...
And anyway, the Wolverine trailer didn't exactly inspire. Frankly I think it has more to do with the weak story than any shooting problems.
It did look awfully low-budget, though. But then again, so did the last X-Men movie, that Ratner masterpiece. That looked awful in theaters and even more God-awful at home on Blu-Ray. 120hz refresh rate makes things look so cheap!

    by continentalop

Consider me part of the chorus that never really liked the X-Men movies. Hell, I remember getting ripped by other TBers for daring to say that I thought they were overrated.
I can understand why someone likes the first two, and I can see why so many people are fans of the series, but truthfully they were not the best adaptation of the X-men possible and it didn't do a very good job of creating an enduring series. The biggest problem was actually Wolverine, he so dominated the series from the get go that it just didn’t leave any room for the other characters.
I agree with BSB, look at the Claremont/Byrne run (and to a lesser degree some of Claremont/Romita’s work on the series) to see how the X-men really should be done.

I mean, Wolverine was at his most interesting when you didn't know how old he was, you didn't know his life story and you didn't know how he got the adamantium claws and skeleton. When he was just this wildman found in the woods in Canada and then trained as a Canadian agent before becoming an X-Men, that was when he was his most interesting. All the "revelations" since then have actually diminished the character.

He had to reshoot those scenes, because they quit due to the film taking too fucking long. That film also ended the marriage of Tommy Cruise and Nicole Kidman.

    by badboybrom hc

He's the one one walked leaving the job unfinished after all. He and his writers are the one who totally shafted James Marsters Cyclops and gave him reason for being disilusioned with the character. He kinda destroyed the whole thing and then fucked up Superman along the way. Ratner's not great but did what he had in the time he was given. Is Speilberg a hack? Maybe, maybe not but Indy 4 is the biggest piece of shit I ever did see and that my friends boils down to the dogshit script he was made to work with. All in all here's hoping something of Wolverine can be salvaged.

Paul Bettany forgot he did Iron Man....HAHAHA!!

    by dannyglovers_dickblood

Absent-minded actor Paul Bettany may have difficulty reprising his role in the next Iron Man movie after he completely forgot he starred in the first installment.

The star took on the role of Jarvis, the speaking voice of Tony Stark's house, lab and suit - in the 2008 comic book film.

But by the time the blockbuster hit theatres, Bettany's part in it had completely escaped his memory.

He says, "Somebody said to me about six months later, 'Are you the voice in Iron Man?' And I said no. They went, 'Really?' And I went, 'Oh, no, I am! I am.' So it was sort of done for fun."

Extensive reshoots, ripping off chase scenes from Mission Impossible, horrible casting and "makeup" for the main villain, squeezing too many name characters into too small roles in the same film... the only thing this film needs to be a complete disaster is Joel Schumacher at the helm.

    Wolverine isn't overrated, just overexposed

    by mr_sinister

How many teams does he really need to be a part of? He seems to be everywhere in the Marvel Universe. It was good when Jason Aaron made reference to that in his story arc 'Get Mystique' on Wolverine's solo title, with Mystique taunting Wolverine about the mulitple groups he's running with. Great story by the way. And after staying away from Origin because I liked Logan's mysterious past, I only just gave in and read it, finding a neatly crafted tale. The allusion to the Cyclops-Jean love triangle, his reason for being so interested in Japan and the way of the samurai, and his eventual turn to the wildside all made sense and were great. I kind of think it's unfortunate he had to feature so prominently in all three of the X-Men movies, especially at the expense of other characters. Not too excited about his own movie, but I'll see it of course. Still my favourite comics character in spite of it all.

The Dark Knight caused the reshoots

    by antonphd

Isn't that OBVIOUS to everyone? They are reshooting Wolverine to raise the quality of the film. Quality is a function of box office in superhero films. TDK proved that. They are letting Hood re-shoot. If they were just throwing in action then they'd get Renny Harlin or some other idiot to reshoot action. They are reshooting for story because they know that there is only ONE SINGLE OTHER dark knight... and that is Wolverine. They are cashing in on quality. I'm not saying this out of optimism... it's all about money. Everyone knows that Wolverine is Fox's chance for a Billon dollar franchise. I think they saw the light after seeing The Dark Knight.

    From what i believe...

    by emeraldboy

Singer , though he had never read a single X-men comic book in his life before making X-men had a terrible time making the first first film and battled fox continously to make a film the film he knew that fans wanted. He wasnt helped by the fact that Hally berry was by all accounts a major pain in the ass. Singer didnt want to ome back for the sequel but fox reminded him that as he had signed on for the first two he could go anywhere. Hally berry got her oscar for monsters ball(ocks) and became a bigger pain in the ass. Demanded more money and said that if they didnt pay her they could stick the movie up their asses. She got her pay increase. and was very demanding on set. She and singer didnt get on. I am sure that singer wanted to put in lots of things that the fans wanted. but he battled fox and lost. I am sure that by the time he was offered Superman, he made the decision to get as far way from fox as possibly he could. Fox gets kicked a lot on the talkback from perfectionists. But there was more trouble behind the scenes on the x-men films. Then you will ever know. Matthew Vaughan went through this on his very short time in charge of x-men 3. So they got Brett Ratner and make this film the way we tell to you to make and he did. Speilberg made two movies in six months. not all film makers are spielberg though. and no studio would dare tell him what to do at this stage.

I think most of singers battles were to do with the studio. I thought the name the last stand was stupid. they werent really about three characters Magneto, professor X and wolverine. the rest were reduced to minor characters. and one last thing. The movies and the money they made went into helping Hugh Jackman setup his film, tv and theatre production company.

The film critic who host the Ultimate Trailer Show on HD Net, and last week he showed the Wolverine trailer. He mentioned Gavin Hood and how like the only thing he has done was Tsotsi and that was it. Given that Tsotsi was an independent foreign drama Oscar winner, he was like I don't think Hood has any reason for directing this. THE MOTHER FUCKER WAS IN AMERICAN KICKBOXER and a bunch of cheesy action movies in the 90's, obviously Hood has some martial arts background of sorts. Now I'm not saying that it makes him perfect I'm just tired of lazy critics, all I did was check out IMDB to see who Gavin Hood was and I realized that I fucking recognized him for some of his early movies. I just don't get how some guy who knows as much about movies as the obnoxiousness guy in the office who only reads Yahoo movies and everyone thinks he knows all about movies gets a fucking show talking only about movies. Its just fucking irritating, and dumb people watch this shit and take Robert at his word not giving Hood a second thought. Plus the mother fucker is in love with Paul Rudd? I don't get that either Rudd does two great comedies, Anchorman and 40 Year Old Virgin and all of the sudden everyone acts like he is some Bill Murray comedy and has been for some time? I guess we were all huge fans of Clueless and that movie where Rudd is gay with the Friends girl???

Anyone noticing the waning interest in comic book movies? It's not because we don't still love the comics. It's because we can no longer tolerate half-assed attempts at comic book movies. Dark Knight and Iron Man set a new standard and may have killed the genre for movies like this. I will tell you, I loved Wolverine since the 80's when Chris Claremont and John Byrne penned those classic X-Men storylines but this movie...? Netflix.

Here is something about heath Ledger....

    by emeraldboy

According to James Schamus in entertainment weekly Ledger had a miserable time whilst making Brokeback mountain. and Terry Gilliam who worked briefly with ledger before his death concurred that Brokeback mountain took its toll on heath ledger. Schamus said that Ang lee has a cuddly demeanour but once he calls action he develops a military style mentality. He doesnt yell or bully people but he is very tougn all the same. and this turns actors into What Schamus calls alienated props. Christina Ricci discovered this when making the ice storm. She said that he was very demanding and an exhaustive director to work for. She felt like he was a very strict and unemotive headmaster. when she asked a question Lee would demand that she read her lines over and over again. He is a very tough taks master. that is why both connolly and Bana are in no hurry to work with him again. Lee did military service before disobeying his father by quitting the army taking up a film career.

    Its gonna suck

    by mojoman69

Its gonna suck, like the Xmen movies sucked. Fox needs to be punished by fans for what they pulled with the Watchmen. I plan to boycott any Fox movie. But missign Wolverine wont be hard. Jackman is horrible as Logan and cant act worth a shit. Van Helsing proved that. They can reshoot till the cows come home, it will still eat ass.
