Because you asked for it... Keanu Reeves to play Spike Spiegel in COWBOY BEBOP! (Updated)

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Up front, I am not particularly well-versed in anime, so I am the exact wrong person to write this up. I hope Scott Green can come in and spruce up this posting with an actual informed opinion, but I figured I should at least get the conversation started. Keanu Reeves will topline 20th Century Fox's big screen adaptation of the very popular COWBOY BEBOP series. A relative unknown screenwriter, Peter Craig, is attached to pen the adaptation with Sunrise Inc. (original anime producers) working closely with Fox on the adaptation. Reeves will play bounty hunter Spike Spiegel. That's what I know. Maybe it's super great casting, but even though I have no idea what the source material is like, I have a feeling that there might be some... uneasy feelings about this. Right or wrong?

Scott Green here, The character of Spike Spiegel is that of a noir, tragic hero crossed with an embodiment of Bruce Lee's "like water," with a healthy dose of Monkey Punch's not-so gentlemanly gentleman thief Lupin III. He's haunted by how his previous life within a crime syndicate ended, but he also has full of primal mischief. A favorite scene from the episode "Gateway Shuffle" involves his partner, ex-cop Jet Black holding a suspect believed to be connected to an ecoterrorist bio-weapon, while speaking to an old contact via video-conference. Meanwhile Spike's found a strange vial. He begins trying to twist it open. He puts it on the ground and begins stomping on it. The suspect really starts sweating. Finally, Spike places it on a shelf, pulls his gun out and shoots off the outer casing. For the most part, the character has an oceanic disposition; fluid with a lot doing on below the surface. According to Variety Peter Craig will script the film. Sunrise's Kenji Uchida and Shinichiro Watanabe will serve as associate producers alongside series writer Keiko Nobumoto. Erwin Stoff will be producing and Joshua Long has been named executive producer. There's talk that the script is based on the anime's first episode "Asteroid Blues," concerning a the "Red Eye" drug, which speeds up the perception of the user.
Because it's ridiculous to expect any perfect anime to film cast translation, my pick for Spike Spiegel is The Long Goodbye era Elliott Gould.

    I like Keanu!

    by BiggusDickus

He's the poster boy for anyone with limited talent chasing their dreams. If Keanu can become Hollywood 'A'-list despite possessing a complete inability to act, then there's hope for all of us in our chosen fields of endeavour. Go Ted!

    This isn't right

    by hyeguy

How many suits does this guy have to wear before he realizes that the The Matrix steam has run out. Spike is a fun role, a Depp role. Maybe a Kutcher. Bruce Willis can play the big guy and Demi Moore, Fye.

cos that all there seems to be nowadays....

  • Jan. 16, 2009, 3:41 a.m. CST

    Did we ask for it?

    by Nasty_Nick

I *love* cowboy bebop. It is the best anime ever and I dread what it might be like as a live action. Could they pull it off? Maybe and if so then great. But I can't see Keanu Reeves as Spike, thinking back over his past roles I just don't think his acting abilities match what is required for that laid back tough bounty hunter Spike. Can't believe they are finally doing it.

It may be that there's a lot of bitching on here, but this time it's completely warranted.... This is horrible casting. It's gonna be Reeves standing there saying, "I'm on a spaceship. Woah."

So long as they cast the right Faye, Jet and Ed..I'm down

    by Monkey_King

Keanu better start that diet and JKD training now. Spike was a skinny Bruce Lee with a gun and bionic eye.

    Kate Beckinsale for Faye none

    That would be dangerously sexy.

    isn't this going to backfire?

    by BadMrWonka

I thought Keanu Reeves' big draw is that he attracts girls to movies that are usually guy oriented. but male anime fans don't have girlfriends, and girls that like anime, they like Keanu? I know they like Evanescence...

    Keanu -OKay. Fox - NoWay

    by onezeroone

more than Keanu am worried that Fox is attached to the project. Keanu mostly does well in geeky sci-fi projects high on geek meter. But Fox... is altogether a different story.

    Stallone for Jet!!

MAKE IT SO!! Keanu is a good fit for the look of Spike. lets just hope he can pull off the attitude..

    I would have had...

    by Phalex

I would have had Lee Pace in the role. Also, they better get Yoko Kanno to do the music!

  • Jan. 16, 2009, 4:43 a.m. CST

    Spike Spiegel

    by louisse

is a great character, with an I don't really care attitude. Reeves could pull that off well I think.

  • Jan. 16, 2009, 4:43 a.m. CST

    It's iffy..

    by Ironthorman

I guess I can see why they choose Reeves. He sort of (kind of) resembles Spike in some ways. Sort of a nonchalant-ness to the character, and sort of a monotone voice. Only difference being those attributes attributed to Spike Spiegel make him mysterious and shrouded in badassery. But we usually just equate those qualities to Keanu because he's dumb and a shitty actor. I'd love to believe this concept would even work as a live action. It's a very enthralling and well written show, but I'm skeptical of the transition. For anyone who knows the show Im sure you'd agree Keanu doesnt assuage any fears.

  • Jan. 16, 2009, 4:49 a.m. CST

    BatPsycho & Phalex

    by ugh

Stallone (or Rourke): YES, but both are a little short for the role IMO. Yoko Kanno: FUCK YEAH!, but this will be a Fox film and it will probably be The Jonas Brothers. Seriously speaking, I won't hold my breathe for Hollywood getting it right when it comes to using Kanno in any of the upcoming Anime-to-live action films.

    by Spifftacular Squirrel Girl

    by LaserPants

I don't hate Keanu Reeves, but he is dead wrong for Spike Spiegal. He doesn't have the hip, world weary swagger. He might look similar, and, of course, he knows kung fu, but... I say, "meh". Bad choice.

  • Jan. 16, 2009, 5:40 a.m. CST

damn keanu and fox, but please cast Rourke or Perlman as Jet

    by hoorah24

I actually think Bebop is one of the few anime/manga source materials that could be reasonably adapted into a good movie. in a way,the sets would not be entirely difficult to conjure up (unlike the craziness that will be the Akira adaptation), and just get Lucas' company for the space stuff. But I haaaaaaaaaaate keanu reeves, he doesn't have the range to do spike, which is saying a lot. Even when he's trying to play laid back, he only looks depressed and serious (look at The Replacements, Hardball), and he can't nail roles that require even slightly above cookie-cutter characters (look at The Devil's Advocate, Day Earth Stood Still). I would agree on Franco being interesting for the role, though I think Adrian Grenier (Vince from Entourage) would be good. Basically just combine Vince with some of his indie stuff, and looks like he'd be very good. Plus he has the look. If not Rourke, Ron Pealman for Jet. Has the look and attitude, plus his face doesn't look as tore up as Rourke's... eh, maybe not. Please don't let Fox turn this into Fifth Element II. They tend to fuck up everything, and it seems like this is Keanu's project, and I have no idea how much pull he has with them or if he has the talent to put this in the right direction. Hopefully he's not some fanboy who thinks he could do a better job than the actual people who did the original Bebop.

Reeves a bad choice for Spike

    by brattyben

Honestly, it's neat to think that a live action version of this wonderful anime will be put to film, but, I hesitate my excitement because of the casting of Reeves for Spike. To me he doesn't have that swagger and demeanor that Spike has. He's confident, kinda a smart ass, and full of attitude, which is something that lacks in most of Reeves performances. I cannot picture any kind of Spike dialouge coming out of that monotonous mouth. Regardless, I'd probably go see it anyway, and I think that's what Reeves is banking on. Too bad he can't get people in the seats on pure talent....because he really doesn't have any.

Great call, I can't think of a better person for it. I doubt Fox has enough respect for the show to make it a slam dunk. I have never had this hate for Keanu that a lot of people have, but his normal attitude is not exactly who Spike is, but we will just have to see.

It will be funny to see if they slap a wing on Keanu to give him Spike's crazy hairstyle. <p> More importantly, can he pull off the martial arts moves in a believable manner. The fighting in Bebop is more grounded in reality then say The Matrix movies. No bullet time in Bebop(at least I hope). <p> lets see how the other casting goes.

  • Jan. 16, 2009, 6:44 a.m. CST

Faye will make or break the movie

    by MurderMostFowl

On the last talkback, I waxed poetically about this, but I want to reinterate... Faye will be by far the hardest person to cast. Her character has to be a realistic person to match wits with Spike. Not many actresses can portray Sexy, savvy, and smart, while at the same time being bitch, badass, and ... uhh... sorry I have my alliteration book on back order . <BR> Writing for all of this will be so important.

Bruce Lee would've been about the only one i could imagine

    by drturing

Keanu doesn't have the arrogance or wry sense of humor. Which Lee definitely had. I can't think of any of the modern crop of even Asian actors who could do Spike justice - maybe, just maybe Rain (having seen him in I'm a Cyborg and It's Ok). All of the characters need it - a sort of noirish hard boiled wryness. As for director, the thing about Cowboy Bebop to remember is that it needs someone with a truly original visual eye who also understands MUSIC. I swear that the director for this needs to be someone like Jean Pierre Jeunet or Ji-Woon Kim or even in a total fit of insanity that would at least make for an interesting movie, Michel Gondry (though Michel wouldn't care enough to make the beautiful set pieces work). <p> If they hire a boilerplate person who knows effects and action well I guarantee you a shitty movie. Cowboy Bebop needs to be tragic, funny, and musical.

  • Jan. 16, 2009, 7:30 a.m. CST

Oh yeah and Megan Fox for Faye Valentine

    by drturing

She has the sense of humor, and despite what you'd think, just might be smart and funny.

on two upcoming films: Dragonball Z, and to a lesser extent, Astroboy. If those films turn out to be marginally profitable, then I guarantee you they'll go full steam ahead with this project. If they tank (like Speed Racer), I'm pretty confident they'll find a way to pull this project.

  • Jan. 16, 2009, 7:33 a.m. CST

Holy shit James Franco as Spike would be awesome

    Shut the fuck up Donny..

    by drturing

I know people who worked on Dragonball. Dragonball will flop, but might be barely profitable given how shittily Fox made it. Astroboy doesn't matter cause it's CGI cartoon. What does matter is Keanu's track record getting movies like this made. And no doubt they see this as a tentpole franchise sort of thing. The real question is, which visionary director that this film requires would actually deal with Fox given how fucking horrible they are to work for these days.

  • Jan. 16, 2009, 7:36 a.m. CST

    by conspiracy

Obviously he can pull off the somewhat lackadaisical vibe of Spike...but I just don't knoow...dude has alot of built in Fail too him. Kate B. might be good for Faye...BUT NOT cast that Producer fucking, no talent, tatt'd up walking advertisment for how NOT to raise a daughter in a TRAILER PARK, Megan FOx in this thing..other than sleezy gutterish sex appeal she has nothing to offer.

  • Jan. 16, 2009, 8:21 a.m. CST

Honestly, I think it's great casting.

    by Fawst

Spike is a tall, lanky guy with a thin face, great martial arts skills, and can be pretty damn moody. Pretty much I'm guesing that Keanu gets the nod due to his training for The Matrix, and how well he pulled off a lot of those moves. I can see this working, quite well.<br><br>As long as we DON'T get Dakota Fanning for Ed, we're in good shape. I think Terry O'Quinn was a pretty good choice for Jet, but Perlman might be the better choice physically. I'm gonna get slammed for this one, but I'm thinking Anne Hathaway. She's a versatile actress, and she's hot as hell with the short hair... as seen here:

I'm down with James Franco. Good call.

    by malificus

I am not down with Keanu Reeves. It seems to me that when an actor becomes overexposed to the point of saturation it no longer becomes possible to suspend belief enough to buy in to whatever character they play. Some actors can buck this but usually only the ones with exceptional acting skills. I'd still believe Jack Nicholson even though shit he's Jack Nicholson, Johnny Depp can still bring it home, amoung others, but unfortunately for Keanu he never had the chops to begin with and when I see him on screen it's just "..fuck...Keanu sucks up yet-another role that a far better actor could build a career on." At what point is enough enough? He's very smart about picking properties, he'd probably be a decent guy to hit a Chinese Buffet with, but goddamn give it a rest, yo. Take a year off motherfucker!

    by Robstar

To anyone who has not yet seen Bebop, here is what you need to do. Go to your netflix account. Remove that copy of wanted or crystal skull or whatever dissapointing thing you were about to rent and replace it with ALL 26 Bebop episodes and the movie. This goes to anime haters as well. The show is ridiculously entertaining. As for Keanu, the best thing I can say is that it could be worse. They could have casted a disney kid for Spike. Oh and whoever posted about Pearlman as Jet- that would def work.

  • Jan. 16, 2009, 9:19 a.m. CST

    plot based on first episode!?

    by lex romero

The show was very character driven, there wasn't really any over arching plot with most episodes being stand alone. The over-arching plots that they did have were all to do with the caracters pasts catching up with them. <br><br> I always thought it would be hard to adapt that kind of series into one film, my only thoughts of a solution being to condensce spike's episodes about his past and have that as the main thrust of the storyline. <br><br>To pick the first episode is just pointless as it's nothing special. If you're going to do that "lets just adapt any old episode" then why not one of the better ones like "ballad of fallen angels"? It's a fantastic episode and deals with Spike's past. So it'd actually have some depth and a cool villian.

  • Jan. 16, 2009, 9:22 a.m. CST

    Don't you think...

    by Anna Valerious

Matthew McConaghuey would've been a better choice? If they're not going with the character's age, they should at least go with the personality. IMO, "Speed Racer" was the best live action to anime casting. Except that when I saw a part of the film "The Queen" with the dude who played the bad guy in it, I kept thinking of the "Pankuchen am lieb" scene...

I'm Ending this Debate Now: Johnny Depp!!!

    by victor82

This film already sucks. The role of Spike Spiegel can only be played by Johnny Depp, period. If you saw the Pirates films AND his latest horror musical, you saw an actor with the range to play Spike as a REAL PERSON, not as the lead actor from the Matrix. <P> This film already sucks. Keanu is NOT SPIKE. <P> JOHNNY DEPP IS SPIKE. This role was written for him. Period. End of story. The rest of you clowns who disagree with me can go to the Star Trek thread and lobby Abrams for a Return of Fat Shat for a cameo in the new Trek film.

....will be the next bollocksy cockup by this ship of fools. Leave it to the Americans to screw up a great Japanese product. <p> Remember the American adaptation of Godzilla? I thought you did. Remember how bad it was (remember how Abrams ripped it off for "Cloverfield", btw?)? Anyway, this will be worse. You can tell by the casting. <p> Trust me. In the future, after this movie is released in two years, people will speak of this film in the same, hushed, reverent tones with which they refer to Paul Verhoeven and Casper Van Dien in the towering, monumental adaptation of Heinlein's "Starship Troopers". <p> ....snicker.....

What part of the above equation does NOT equal the most monumental adaptational disaster since the release of Troopers? <p> You'll know how bad it has become when Jolene Blalock gets casted as Faye. <p> They could get better casting if they trolled the porn industry in Chatsworth. <p> Teanna Kai for Faye! by conspiracy

Can in NO WAY be touched or altered. If I hear some fucktard Emo/Hip-Hop/Neu-Metal soundtrack...I not only will scream "FIRE" in the theater...but will actually start one. Oh...No Depp for Spike either...too old, doesn't look the part, and though a great actor I just don't see him getting that "Spike" vibe. This is going to be hard to cast...and so far they are batting close to zero with Keanu.

He's right. Keanu is too old to play the part. The man will be 45 this year for crying out loud. If they do 2 sequals he'll be pushing fifty by the time the third movie comes out. Seriously is FoX THAT STUPID....oh wait Rothman runs Fox....ok that makes sense.

Hell, remember when Ledger was cast as the Joker and everyone thought it would be shit but he pulled off the best Joker. Maybe Keanu can pull this off. I'll remain optimistic in this all. Also, I second Scarlett Johansson for Faye.

    by Animation

Spike is supposed to be 27, not 44. Hey, I'm almost 42 and I dont want to see an older actor play him either. Also, Spike has somber moments, but he also has verbal acrobatics the likes of which I have not seen Keanu do. So, I am very skeptical of the casting here.

    Bullet3, "Fully Realized Universe"

    by Violet Grey

The issue is not only is it an American adaptation of an anime classic, it's FOX. Fucking FOX, to be precise. They have a chronic inability to deliver quality genre products as their douche-nozzle of a chairman hates anything geek related that he can't spend 4 bucks and some change to produce. How this project ended up at FOX and not Sony is a complete mystery to me. FOX will, if the project gets the go ahead, greenlight the movie based on one version of the script. Then, as the film is in production, their on set lawyers will being to micro-manage the film into oblivion. People who have no concept of the story or characters will begin to make big decisions like, "Does Spike have to be so fatalistic? And does Jet have to be a cyborg? What if we just made Jet a talking head? And the dog should have a bigger part. IN fact, we should really be centering the story around the little boy... no, it's a BOY goddamnit, it'll sell better. The story should really be about the boy and his dog getting into mischief. It doesn't even have to take place in space; if we shoot it on location in the suburbs near my mansion we can save a huge amount of money. And instead of calling it, "Cowboy Bebop" we can call it something else, something that tracks better with 8-10 year olds." Blah blah blah... so they won't ever make the movie, but as we've seen them do, they'll hold the rights so no one else can make the movie either so they don't suffer the indignity of once again being shown to be the half witted twips they are.

appearance on the Golden Globe red carpet was the most sarcastically honest, sharp and witty thing i've seen from a starlet since the early days of Jolie. Scarlett Johnanson has never come close to anywhere near that kind of wit - for that matter Scarlett thinks she is smart because she once played Sofia Coppolla, but I don't think she even knows who Alan Alda is. I assumed, like most everyone would, that Megan Fox is a vapid fame seeker. Now I'm not so sure. I'm convinced she's going to be a movie star, and she's got something going on that's really, really interesting. Oh yeah, she also walked the floor of San Diego Comic Con to check out art by Michael Turner, who she is a genuine fan of. I'm sorry but that shit is nerd credentials in spades. Oh yeah and there was also this amazing exchange Vapid entertainment repoter: "In Transformers 2 what kind of new territory does your character face?" Fox: "It's a Michael Bay movie". Reporter: "What kind of acting challenges did you face?" Fox: "It's a Michael Bay movie".<p>

What Watanabe did was like what the first hip hop pioneers did with music. He mashed everything together. It was tragic, hilarious, romantic, irreverent, stupid, funny, action packed, light hearted, and yet horribly fatalistic. It was sci fi / kung fu / noir / western / gangster / musical. I really don't think there's a single American director who can pull this off. I agree, that it should've been a film by 60s Godard starring Bruce Lee, Lee Marvin as Jet, and Diana Rigg.<p> And anyone who would dare adapt Cowboy Bebop should do one thing: shake it up radically.

    by Leafar the Lost

...let a younger actor play the part. When he did "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure", he would have been perfect for it. Spike looks like a younger Keanu. Actors in Hollywood, especially the male ones, keep getting cast in parts that are too young for them, and the movie always sucks for it. If he wants to be a part of the movie, then cast him in an age appropriate part. If you actually watch "Cowboy Bebop" there are plenty of parts Keanu could play. Fuck, you could actually make up a character for him! However, Keanu has to be the star in order to justify his paycheck. He looks/walks/talks like some kind of android with broomstick stick up his mechanical ass. And he does it in every movie. Every friggin movie he "acts" the same way. Remember those scenes from "Waltz For Venus" when Spike teaches Rocco about his "like a running water" kug-fu philosophy ? Now ask yourself one question. I saw Keanu in Parenthood. and I saw him Both bill and ted films and point break and First speed film. and I want to know where is that Keanu gone. Look I can understand that he suffered some major personal loss(his mother died and his girlfriend was killed in a car accident around the same time) whilst filming the Matrix sequels. but that is no excuse for terrible acting. His performance is The day earth stood still is beyond terrible.

I really hope they keep the jazz aspect going or at least use Yoko Kanno as the score master

They threw that scene with mcDonalds..

    by emeraldboy

in at the very last minute, it looked like. It made no sense whatsoever(klaatu is for the entire movie the only alien from his planet.then they throw in the Macdonalds scene.bonkers).. Klaatu wants to save planet earth and yet get rid of the humans. Yet there is that scene where he nearly kills the policeman and brings him back to life. after jaden smith turns Klaatu(that scene made no sense either). Klaatu saves only the boy and his mother and Kathy bates. Final credits roll. What a strange film. I was waiting for the scene to come along where Keanu goes all Micheal Rennie. But then Keanu is No Micheal Rennie. He is so unemotional. is keanu. Even that Line where he admits to coming to earth to kill the human race is funny because of Keanus Surfer dude/stoner delivery.

If Fox replaced Alf Clausen with Hans Zimmer on The Simpsons

    by eggart

after writing the music in the show for over a decade and a half, you can be sure as shit they won't be engaging the services of Yoko Kanno for this picture. Bananas.

    Keanu Reeves perfect choice

    by Lornsorrow

As a huge fan of the series (seen it a lot, own it, even watched the anime movie when it came out in LA at the kinda run down and kinda gross Newark theater in LA) I think Reeves is the PERFECT choice. I know some people have problems with him. Well, cant help you there. But for those of us who have watched him over the years and seen what he can do when he gets a good script, I'm looking forward to this. Spike is right up his alley, his kinda persona. I think even some of his critics might be able to appreciate this given how Spike acts much of the time. Detached, contemplating, etc. Perfect. Looking very forward to this.

Lornsorrow, if you think Keanu is PERFECT...

    by TheGhostWhoLurks

Then you are NOT a huge fan of Cowboy Bebop. Wanting Keanu Reeves to play Spike Spiegal is an indication that you DON'T want a successful live-action version of the anime.

I Agree With A Lot Said Here

    by Tokyo_Drifter

I'm not a Keanu hater by any means. I don't mind him at all. He can be good. He's just not right for this in any way shape or form. I can already see how it'll play out with his "acting." He'll read the character wrong and play it like his character in Street Kings, when that's simply not the case.

If everyone else is cast well then I`ll be there

    Decent cast

    by avenger147

Anne Hathaway or Beckinsale for Faye, Bruce Willis as Jet, and a slimmed down Keanu as Spike could work. I dont know what James Franco would look like doing JKD or even the guy from Entourage. At least we've seen Keanu fight b4 and it was decent enough.

    Top choices for Jet:

    Ron Perlman or Michael Ironside.

Keanu should have taken the Leo high road as a Producer...

    by hoorah24

of course he doesn't give a shit, as this is just one more chance for blockbuster money for him, but at least Dicaprio, whose studio is making the Akira adapation, knew he shouldn't be in that movie and decided to just back it and (hopefully) see that its done as well as possible. that's what smart, responsible business people do - they see something they like and want to make work, and they bring in the best people possible to do it.

though I like Megan Fox as Faye - much better fit than Hathaway

    AWWW the eternal Keanu bashing...

    by RedHHades

what a surprise! Keanu is old to play Spike? Keanu doesn't look his age, he looks 30 (bet he looks younger than 99% of the talkbackers here even if he has twice the age). And, know other actor who already has training in martial arts, do that with a lot of elegance and competencD and actually LOOKS like the character? No, you don't. BTW, Evan Rachel Wood should be Faye. Swayne Johnson for Jet and some crazy kid for Ed. Put the Yoko Kanno on the soundtrack. Done, FOX has their beloved franchise.

  • Jan. 19, 2009, 12:20 p.m. CST

I meant Dwayne Johnson - The Rock

    by RedHHades

for Jet. And, about Leo DiCaprio and Akira, Leo has NOTHING to do with the character. Nothing! Keanu actually looks like Spike, acts like Spike, has the same nonchalant atittude, the bored look, the martial arts skill and KNOW how to fight with swords (did anyone here actually watch Reloaded making of???). I doubt Leo DiCaprio would work out or manage to learn anything about asian culture to play the character. So that's good he stays behind the camera. As for Keanu, the guys knows everything about it, stop whinning for nothing. They could had cast Shia LaBeouf.

    Keanu lacks charisma.

    by thedarklinglord

Yeah, Spike is somewhat sullen, a little brooding, introspective and reserved, and nonchalant (sometimes to the point of near catatonia), but there's also an edge of charisma, a bit of dark humor and a warmth of personality that cuts through the exterior when he makes a playful quip - not a sarcastic remark or an action hero pseudo-witticism, but a self-amused quip - or gives that little half-smile that shows he's still human, still able to find amusement in situations and capable of feeling a connection to others, even on the most superficial or momentary level, despite all the shit he's been through. There's a subtle charisma to the character that Keanu simply can't pull off. Or, at least, hasn't proved he's capable of to date. <br> <br> Keanu has some martial arts training and can fight with swords. So fucking what? Any actor could be trained for the role. And if they actually take the movie seriously, if they see the potential for making it into a franchise - and, let's face it, everything is a fucking franchise to studios these days - then there's no reason any actor couldn't be put through training similar to what Keanu received when doing the Matrix movies. While having those skills ahead of time gives him a slight advantage, it doesn't make Keanu perfect for the role. As for physically matching the character...Keanu has dark hair and a lanky build. Yeah, that's a tough order to fill. No chance of them finding anyone else who meets those demanding physical requirements. <br> <br> I don't honestly have anything against Keanu, but his acting is pretty one-dimensional. I, personally, feel the role of Spike is going to require more than that, more than Keanu has shown himself capable of giving to a role. But, who knows? With the perfect script, with a lot of dedication to getting it right, and if he pushes himself to go beyond everything he's done to date, maybe Keanu will surprise me. <br> <br> Of course, in all fairness, there are plenty of ways they could fuck this up regardless of casting Reeves as Spike. The writing has to be spot on perfect. The art design of the ships, if nothing else, needs to accurately match the anime; the special effects can't be cheesy; the music unquestionably has to be done by Yoko Kanno. And the casting of the other key characters is just as important. There are any number of ways they can screw this up. So, while I'm not especially thrilled with Reeves as Spike and now less than optimistic about the rest, I won't condemn the project as a failure until I know more of the details.

  • Jan. 20, 2009, 12:24 p.m. CST

    Spike isn't ALL that

    by RedHHades

Yep, he is fun, but that isn't what makes him a compelling character. His best parts in the anime are the ones where he is sullen or fighting. Period. BTW, you guys talk as Keanu's training for The Matrix was something everyone in Hollywood would pull off in a minute! Have you really watched Matrix Revisited? Or Reloaded BTS? Have any of you watched the making of of the Seraph scene where Keanu fought head on head with Colin Chou? Or the mano a mano fights in Street Kings? So, go back and watch. THAT type of training... you can't take that from every man or as it was as easy as cutting some hair.
