30 ROCK & OFFICE Get More Seasons!! KATH & EARL Still On Bubble!! Merchant On OFFICE Spinoff?? Loads of NBC News!!

Published at:  Jan 16, 2009 12:29:42 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

News emerging from NBC presentations at the TCA event:

* British “Office” co-creator Stephen Merchant (Ricky Gervais’ partner) may have a role in a future American “Office” spinoff, though American “Office” mastermind Greg Daniels might not be actively involved.

* “30 Rock” and “The Office” are renewed for next season. So is rising reality star “Biggest Loser.” Lower-rated “My Name Is Earl” and “Kath and Kim” did not get early pickups. Lower-rated “Lipstick Jungle” and “Knight Rider” are technically on the bubble as well, though it helps to keep in mind there will be far fewer timeslots to program next fall thanks to five weekly primetime hours of “The Jay Leno Show.”

* “The Philantropist,” starring “Rome’s” James Purefoy, could hit NBC’s schedule as early as spring.

I don't know what the hell happened with last season. They nearly lost me. My girlfriend and I theorized that they were trying to get canceled. But, I'm glad I stuck with it. This season has been great. The old Earl we all know and love seems back.

Kath and Kim poor man's Arrested Development

    by enan

There is potential for this show to be one of the funniest things on. The cast is strong and the writing is so close to being really worthwhile. It could use another year to strut it's stuff. Earl really did blow it spending all that time in jail. When Earl misses, it is utter crap. When it hits, it is watchable. Give me Poehler or Arnett or Stephen Merchant. Jason Lee should get back to movie-ing proper again. This Leno bizniz has really got me down too. 5 nights a week in primetime? NBC might as well be Gitmo with such torture.

The best hour long show on NBC possibly network television. Definitely needs to be picked up. The ratings are on par with Heroes and I am sure Heroes is more expensive to produce. Word is Heroes is picked up, why not Chuck?

Is a show I think about not watching (it is a hot nest of Scientologists) a lot, and Tivo it, but then find myself loving it. I think it is very clever and the actors are very good. It is nowhere as good as 30 Rock or the Office but it is miles above all other sitcoms and does push the envelope quite a bit.

the plots are simpler and the rest of the cast isn't used as much, plus the use of bigger named guest stars and salma hayeks boobs. i guess thats what it takes to make a hit show these days.

    by tvguy4566

Since Herc would never report news about Chuck, Ausiello is reporting that Scott Bakula will play Chuck's dad and he will go up against Chevy Chase. I know this ain't as relevant to this board as say.... Gossip Girl, but I think it is pretty good casting.

    by tvguy4566

It is falling into the sitcom trap of making every character a characature of themselves. The characters are larger than life to begin with, but now they seem to be getting ludicriously larger than life.

I always dvr the NBC comedies and watch Smallville and Supernatural, but I find I never end up watching the annoying whiney chick show. Like Sex and the City(uncut) it is better with the sound off. And another vote for Chuck, the ep where he had to play Missile Command while listening to RUSH to stop a bomb was classic.

    Tim Stack and Earl

    by skimn

One of the funniest things televised this past summer, and probably viewed the least was the bizarre Celebrity Family Fued, which pitted sitcom casts against each other. The actors From Earl portrayed their characters, so Tim Stack played the drunk Tim Stack as he appears on Earl. It was meta-television.

    by raromo

Who cares if it lives or dies? The funniest shows on broadcast TV right now are The Office (though not as good as it used to be), Worst Week (which apparently is on the bubble. Fuck! It's the best new comedy in years), 30 Rock (but it's all clever jokes without any soul, and Tina Fey is starting to get really annoying), and Kath and Kim (which is "good dumb").

Fuck Chuck? What?!? Compared to every one of those other shows you listed, Chuck is faaaaaaar superior. I used to love The Office. Now it bores me to tears. 30 Rock is alright, but way overrated. Kath And Kim? Seriously? Seriously?? Wow. Well, to each his own, I guess.

I think it's a shame that we don't get a Chuck Talkback. Even if the show weren't so thoroughly kick-ass, I would still watch it for Yvonne Strahovski alone. It's not at all a stretch to call her the most devastatingly gorgeous woman on TV.

    RaRoMo & Cool_Breeze

    by lovek

    RaRoMo is borderline retarded.

The Office doesn't have as many sitcom-history-making moments as it has in the past, but on average it's still the funniest show on TV.

30 Rock is great, but that's because the cast is perfect and elevates some otherwise average scripts. I think they HAVE to play it up to get the laugh sometimes.

The funniest part of Kath & Kim is the opening title sequence. And it's the same every week.

And Worst Week? More like Worst SHOW OF THE Week. Am I right people? But seriously folks... I like the cast, but you can see the jokes coming from a mile away. I just can't laugh at a show whose jokes I can 1-up during any given episode.

Chuck deserves to be on TV for as long as it wants. I think the best word to describe it is "charming"... and I don't mean that with the least bit of condescension. I love every minute of it. It's a funny and sweet show about spies and a guy with a computer in his head -- that somehow never seems to be over-the-top. How can you go wrong with that?
    Ok, I'm done.

I agree with you (even though I'm borderline retarded) that The Office is still the funniest show on broadcast TV. The scene earlier this season when Dwight was using a watermelon to help Michael prepare for delivery was one of those "laugh so hard you start coughing" bits. But how dare you diss Worst Week! You're borderline retarded. Waaaaait a sec. Actually, you're fully retarded. That makes you more retarded than I am, because I'm only borderline retarded. Touché, my friend.

Just more love for Netflix I guess

    by jack burton

More and more of the shows I watch are in danger so I find myself watching less and less TV. My Name is Earl is consistently funny and (I'm shocked to say this) Kath & Kim is actually getting better. I couldn't stand it at first but there are at least 4 or 5 good lines in every episode. Both of those shows have been funnier than The Office this season, which pains me to say.

And Chuck is a fun show that deserves to stick around.

    by tallsy

    Shame About K&K and WW

    by raromo

I think Kath & Kim and Worst Week probably will get canceled, which is a shame. Comedies are one of the few remaining things broadcast TV still gets right, from time to time. I watched Earl the first couple of seasons and enjoyed it, but once Earl went to prison I lost interest, for whatever reason. Chuck seems to be safe, which is at least good news for those people who like it.

NBC giving up the 10 o'clock hour all five nights for Leno seems like a defeatist programming move.

    Chuck is awesome

    by stlost

I saw the first episode of Kath & Kim and it did nothing for me. I've seen bits and pieces of it since then, and see no reason to keep it around. Chuck, on the other hand, is a keeper. Ever since the first episode, I haven't been disappointed. They keep it fresh, fun and the right balance of nerd and campiness. I don't usually buy TV shows on dvd, and the only ones I have are The Simpsons seasons 1-3, and the first season of Chuck. Like someone said up above, "Chuck vs. Tom Sawyer" (missile command) is an instant classic.

    Chuck as "charming"

    by cool_breeze

Lovek- I think that's an excellent word to describe the show. It's also a show that gets away with a lot of things that it probably shouldn't get away with (story-wise), simply because of the quality of the actors involved.

Someone on another board described Chuck as "a show where the 'how' trumps the 'what". I agree completely. They often have paper-thin plots or plot resolutions, but all is forgiven because it's all done so well.

Though I worry that the writers have painted themselves into a corner with the Chuck/Sarah relationship.

    by adrianveidt

I love this show. I really, really do. But they can only keep doing this Buy More shtick for so long. To keep thriving, they'll need to find something new... quirky can only last so long, but eventually it keeps repeating itself.

Any ideas on Chuck avenues to explore?

    by stlost

I had thought of a couple:
    1) CIA/NSA finally decide to use Chuck in a more involved role. Have him join some kind of cia/nsa bootcamp to get him up to speed. Charles Carmichael as his handle???

    2) Chuck's identity compromised at the Buy More. Bring in a CIA/NSA 'stunt double' (wackyk hair, over the top impersonation) to fill in at Buy More while Chuck is carted off to various hiding spots.
    3) New intersect completed, John Casey assigned to dispose of Chuck, but gives him a headstart to go into hiding until they can convince CIA/NSA to reconsier and realize Chuck as intersect works better than a computer. (Like computer intersect bungles a lead, that Chuck actually corrects.)

I'm sure they have some ideas floating around that can keep chuck going a few years.

    Re: Ideas

    by cool_breeze

I like the third one the best. Casey reluctantly hunting Chuck. Of course, in that scenario, it would almost nessesitate Sarah's departure from the CIA. She would "turn rogue" to help/run away with Chuck.

Unless Bryce came to take Chuck into hiding. And then show him how to stay hidden. Chuck could learn a lot from Bryce in even a fairly short (2-3 episode) story-arc. Could be fun.

Also, maybe have a few of his more interesting past villians could stage some kind of mass jailbreak. Then, depending on thier personal grudges, several could come after Chuck/Carmichael/The Intersect personally.
