Josh Schwartz To Mount 1980s-Set GOSSIP GIRL Prequel Pilot!!

Published at:  Jan 14, 2009 9:29:43 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Josh Schwartz’s next TV series may be set in the “Gossip Girl” universe years before the Gossip Girl – or the blogosphere – was born.

A flashback-intensive May 11 “Gossip Girl” episode will serve as pilot for a potential spinoff series focusing on Serena van der Woodsen’s mother and black-sheep aunt when the pair were hot young adults living away from their parents in hair-band-happy 1980s Los Angeles.

Schwartz, currently hard at work penning a new “X-Men” project for the big screen, previously created “The OC” and “Chuck” for the little screen.

If plans changed, why spin off a show that regularly loses to the telenovellas on Univision? Especially when many Tribune owned CW affiliates have reverted to their classic call letters instead of the CW branding? The CW is ready to fall soon. When they do bad this May during the Upfront with a lack of deals with advertisers, they will be done. But Gossip Girl will be fine. It will get picked up by a network like FOX. It features good acting and ridiculous plots that work. And Kristen Bell's narration is good.

    Gossip Girl Reports?!? Really?!?

    by tvguy4566

Besides I figured Herc this would be a perfect time to tie Gossip Girls to Buffy-verse because the hot rumor is that Michelle Tractenberg's character might be spin off of Gossip Girls.
Ok, I am done acting like a 15 year old girl. Leave Gossip Girl rumors for Auesello from EW and Kristen from E. How about news from Chuck, Dexter, HIMYM, or any other series that actually interests your audience? I know you don't like talking about shows you don't watch, but I doubt many people on this board care about Gossip Girl.

I kind of care about Gossip Girl...

    by worldofwarcraft

Plan on checking it out on disc when I get a chance to borrow it from a woman I know. From what little I've seen of it I'm willing to give it a chance. Though I'm much more interested in Skins on BBC. But I can't seem to ever catch it. Saw a Sunday afternoon marathon and it kept me company while I did some work around the house. XOXO

  • But even then, I don't care Gossip Girl. Rather just watch the two episode stint she had on House over and over again.

    My step-daughter loves this show

    by freerangecelt

She's 21 and the girls on the show are her role-models. She has the attention span of a gnat but DVR's and watches the hell of that show.

Who will play the Chuck Bass of the 80's?

    by frakthetoasters

Will that character be as conniving and smarmy like James Spader back in the day?

Will Snorena's Mom like girl music like Gibson, Abdul, the Bengals or will she be a Rufus worshipper?

No text messaging! Kids passed notes in class! How arcane!

Blake Lively is Snorena Van der Acting Wood(s)en

    by frakthetoasters

Snorena and Dan "Dull" Ho-Humphreys are the least interesting characters in the show.

    Jenny is annoying.

It's Leighton Meester's Blair who rocks. Continuously.

    by getfarkedyoukarnt

They are letting that hack write a fucking Xmen movie. Unbelieveable. My missus watches Gossip Girl. I tried to watch it just for the hotties but couldn't take the 17 year olds acting like 35 year oldes for more than 5 minutes. REALLY bad. Maybe before I die I will see a REAL Xmen movie. Dagnabbit.

    by boomers_lips

Why can't actual comic book writers write the movie instead??

I love Gossip Girl, The OC, and the new 90210 so I'll give this new show a chance! Blair is the real star of Gossip Girl anyways.

    by lsleelee

They gave this bastard an X-Men property? Haven't they seen The OC? Don't they know Gossip Girl is good in spite of, not because of, Josh Schwartz and that anything he does not starring Leighton Meester and Kristen Bell will be awful 'cause he's awful?! Jesus.

    by badmrwonka

and no talkbacks for Dexter or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a pretty good sell for a claim I've been defending AICN against for years:it's starting to be a little bit about the money, isn't it guys?

McCord is very pretty, sure, and you have every right to be into anorexic teenage boys, but you can't describe them using the phrase "hot piece of ass" because they don't HAVE asses. Call her a "hot piece of protruding shoulder-blade" or something.

    May not work

    by deadpanwalking

And not for the reason's Profit pointed out. Although the Neilson numbers aren't that great for GG, it has great numbers for online viewing. In fact, they joked about this in an episode with the line "Who still watches TV on TV anymore?" or something like that. GG is considered a pioneer of an online viewing success story in the industry. Having said that, I'm not sure the '80's thing will work because GG lives and dies on the younger audience and they're less susceptible to the nostalgia factor than say, adults in their 30's. It would have to be done really really well (think That '70's Show and Happy Days) to get that core young audience that everyone else follows.
