Samuel L. Jackson No Longer Nick Fury In IRON MAN 2?? Will Nick Fury Even Be In IRON MAN 2??
Merrick here...
Remember the hubbub leading up to the release of IRON MAN?
First we were told Samuel L. Jackson would appear in the film as Nick Fury. Then we were told he wouldn't. Then we learned that he does show up in the movie...very briefly...but you have to wait through the entire closing credit roll to see him.
The idea was, of course, that Jackson's appearance as Fury would serve to perpetuate an AVENGERS spinoff which would incorporate Tony Stark/Iron Man. Now, it seems, strangeness is afoot in this regard.
"I saw ['Iron Man' and 'Iron Man 2' director] Jon Favreau at the Scream Awards and we had a conversation. He said, 'I hope things are working out for you because we're writing stuff for you.' Then all of a sudden last week I talked to my agents and manager and things aren't really working that well."
[EDIT]
"There was a huge kind of negotiation that broke down. I don't know. Maybe I won't be Nick Fury. Maybe somebody else will be Nick Fury or maybe Nick Fury won't be in it. There seems to be an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics world so [they're saying to me], 'We're not making that deal.'"
...said Sam per THIS DISCUSSION with The Los Angeles Times.
The L.A. Times does specify that Marvel's official stance is that negotiations with Jackson are "active", but also considers this a "boilerplate response".
Will we see a recast Nick Fury in IRON MAN 2 (cue Shia LaBeouf)? Has Fury been shown the door completely? Does this news portend a change of approach re: Marvel's plans to cross pollinate movie franchises, culminating in THE AVENGERS? Or, is this merely a bump on the road to Sam's eventual return as Fury?
Stay tuned...

I like the idea of Jackson as Fury. Is the Hass available?
-
Samuel L does any movie offered to him
-
No Sam, No Fury
-
Yeah, I said it.

next to this? Did a VH1 rehab center explode?..Sizemore, Busey, Baldwin...

no need to get all torked up this early in the process. i'll check back later.

I'm now waiting for Robert Downey Jr. to be recast.
by the reluctant austinite
This "Avengers" thing doesn't appear to be working out. First Terrence Howard gets the boot. I doubt Edward Norton will return as Hulk. Next thing I expect is to hear Rob Lowe is replacing Downey Jr.
-
Who cares about Samuel Jackson! Just re-cast him! Every movie he has been in since Jackie Brown has sucked balls! & Not the kind that taste good in your mouth!
-
Marvel has a history of being stingy...Nick Fury as played by Samuel L will be in this.
-
Optimus Prime!
-
...to lose the character of Nick Fury, but an even bigger shame to lose Jackson as Fury, as he's such perfect fanboy casting that he'd be impossible to replace. Unless, of course, they're paving the way for the return of the Hoff...

I'm guessing you missed "Black Snake Moan," laraz.
by the reluctant austinite
-
Get Clooney an eye patch and bring back classic Fury!!!
-
Zing!
-
Should be played by Sam. Hoever, Thor could hit him with Mjolnir (y'know, Grapthar's Hammer) and turn him white.
Hasselhoff Gotta Eat!!!!!! -
he is working for peanuts these days and he has the classic furry look to him. Not the re-invented one. JCVD proved he can act, but he could relly excell in a film like this! especially if they have him kicking some ass.

this whole AVENGERS franchise thing is fucked.....
by dannyglovers_dickblood
-
Somebody saw The Spirit I guess.
Get Gary Sinese now. or Tom Selleck. -
He's a double for the white Fury, played by someone from TV!
-
...where I said: "Pretty major fuckup by Marvel Studios. It's one thing to replace Terrence Howard, but canning Sam Jackson? Way to kill off this whole shared movie universe thing before it gets past its infancy."
-
Isn't it premature to be worrying about Avengers when they likely can't get Norton back to play the Hulk, and we've yet to see how well Captain American and Thor are going to do?
-
Both sides have to show that they are willing to do something else, or they can't negotiate from a position of strength.
Marvel would be insane not to get Jackson. And Jackson has said he is a fan. So this should work out, provided both sides have reasonable demands and don't act like dicks. -
And Sam, you're cool and all. We really want to see you continue to play Nick Fury, in these connected motion pictures. But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't ask for too much money, just because you feel you're in a position to do so.
-
Okay, that got a laugh. (Zing!)
-
They should scrap it.
-
Avengers, awwww hell naw. You know it to be true.
-
It's about time for someone to make some stupid decisions and mess it all up.
-
Marvel Comics, as well as all the other comics companies, is experiencing a decline in sales. In a low-margin business, that is a catastrophe. A lot of shops will close, series will be canceled. How this impacts the movies, I don't know. Is it the same pile of money used for production of movies?
In any case, this is only the opening cannon fire of the depression. -
The Avengers thing was a nice idea, but it looks like what they've done is put themselves in a position where all of the major actors involved have some nice leverage to demand more money.Oh, well. How about doing another Blade instead? I like Blade.
-
Of course that's a stupid idea.
I'm practicing to be a Hollyweird dummy. -
Marvel better count their lucky stars to retain these actors for their roles in the remainder of the Marvel Universe films that are coming out. Honestly I think Marvel bit off more then they could chew by trying to link 6 plus films together at different stages of production with different creative teams. Honestly, They shoulh have planned a Trilogy, that started with Iron Man, Included the Cap film and ended with Avengers.
-
He IS Nick Fury!!! They best sign him!
-
Jan 14, 2009 10:40:17 AM CST
Shouldn't they have taken care of this in the first place?
by thunderbolt ross
I mean really
-
you know it.
-
it seemed like what it was - a tack on. is an Avengers film really desirable if it ends up forcing all the individual films to steer towards it and artificially bend their plots to do so?
-
i mean seriously. keep some continuity. typical marvel. forget the content, its all about the money.
-
nothing to do with each other. Marvel is just being cheap like with Favreau.
-
sorry, but I'd rather have Sam in the film than any of the other names floated as possible additions to the cast....
-
The tone set by Favreau and Downey is so specific. It was not the same tone at Hulk and it won't be the same tone as Thor. I can't even imagine the Hulk or Thor in Iron Man's universe as created. As for Nick Fury, who cares. Iron Man 2 should be about Stark and continue the focus they created in the first movie. Trying to bend the sequel to mesh with other movies is movie suicide and Fav's knows this. If they need Fury for Iron Man 2, he'll be in it. This Sam Jackson piece sounds strictly like movie star posturing. He wants more dough, they want him to take less. That's what it is.
-
X-men seemed to manage it; Star Wars seemed to manage it. So did Spider-Man. Why can't Marvel? And what happened with Katie Holmes/Maggie G in Batman / Dark Knight? So what if Maggie is better - she is DIFFERENT! It bumps the experience.
-
haven't these years of hit movies turned them into a financial giant? if not, why not?
-
NICK FURY IS WHITE MOTHER FUCKERS!!! I agree with the dude who wants Bruce Campbell as Nick Fury...that should be interesting.
-
Shia Lebouf in anything= Flames on the non-existing squid's nipples
-
Well, that gave me a laugh. Black Snake Moan is terrible even by SLJ standards. Deep Blue Sea is a friggin classic by comparison.
-
First Terrance Howard and know this shit. Marvel could fuck up a wet dream! DC RULES!!
-
work for Sam when he wanted to be in Star Wars?
-
He's just everywhere, and not in a good way. Iron man was great & they've already fucked part of it by getting rid of T Howard.

FUCK MARVEL HEADS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by illuminate
Samuel L. Jackson aka Big time A list movie star took a small/tiny role in Ironman back when the film was not shit and nobody thought it would be a huge hit. Every outside of the comic book world was like, "Who the fuck is Ironman." Now Marvel is back stabbing Jackson who supported them from the begining. I love Marvel but, the people who are heading Marvel are fucking idiot assholes. A lot of the fans are looking forward to Ironman 2 and the Avengers and if Jackson is not in it than I am not going to the movies.
-
Jan 14, 2009 11:06:37 AM CST
Oh, no! Does it mean that a decent actor will be cast?
by jackpumpkinhead
And I couldn't wait to see yet another example of Jackson's acting range. Jackson yelling obscenities in a "gangsta" manner, Jackson grinning and saying obscenities in a "gangsta" manner, Jackson making a grim face and grunting obscenities in a "gangsta" manner... however you want your obscenities delivered in a "gangsta" manner, he'd be your man. He's that versatile.
-
How many people, besides the fans who knew what was coming, stayed for the scene at the end of the credits? It's not like Sam Jackson is entirely fixed into the public conscious as Nick Fury. They could replace him easily.
-
it's a dumbhouse classic.
-
Why do people want to see more of Jackson, my god he's on Virgin broadband adverts coz he'll do anything.
-
These franchise movies are destined for disaster. A studio would have to sign a star (using the term loosely) like Jackson to appear in multiple films - some planned, some not. It's just too complicated Hollywood, especially Marvel to figure out how to make this work.
It's not going to be good to sell Marvel movies as integrated stories - if your actors switch every time there is a new film. That's what killed Batman. Is killing Punisher. And will kill these movies. -
Terrence gets the boot. SamLJ, see ya. I think they should take this time to give the role of Rhodes back to Terrence and then move Don Cheadle into the Nick Fury role. Case closed.
-
Personally I think a lack of a good movie is what killed The Punisher :)
-
Number Six has gone to that Village in the sky.
-
Sort it out, Marvel. Just give him the money. Between this, Terrence Howard and Ed Norton on The Incredible Hulk, Marvel's fast getting a reputation as the studio that dicks actors around. Which is not a good reputation to have. Still, all's not lost - they could get Michael K Williams to take on the role.
-
Is there any actor with less discerning tastes when it comes to picking a film project? This dude never read a script he didn't like. I've said it before: he's the black John Ritter.
-
Or how about Scott Glenn? I know: Ed Harris. Ed Harris would be an awesome Nick Fury. Who the fuck needs the shark bait from Deep Blue Sea?
-
Had no idea Sam was even IN the first one. Just us fanboys. So recasting him would have lil or NO effect on the franchise.
Marvel was genius to put that scene AFTER the credits. Plus, they're all about recastin black dudes. Maybe Tracy Morgan is available?
Only Robert Downey can guarantee Sam's return...if he makes a stink about it...Marvel will cave. -
I mean, he's pretty unspectacular, especially considering all the other heroes involved.
This Avengers thing is just too big to work, it looks like years and years of planning and organizing around dozen of peoples schedules to match up and for what? One single movie that will be fun probably, but probably won't be an epic hit.. if you talk to any non-comic geek, they either don't know what to think of that, are indifferent, or couldn't give two shits. Seems like this is an epic clusterfuck in the making.
But hey, I'll still see it. -
"Hi ya, guys. I'm lame."

This is the problem with casting STARS in Marvel roles!
by bob cryptonight
They usually get a lot of cash...so I can't imagine how an AVENGERS movie will work with all of thos big names (especially if all of the solo movies are hits).
-
I'm just saying that would be good.
-
I nevr got this whole "Samuel L Jackson is Nick Fury" thing, it seemed like a REALLY bad idea and a total miscast and fucking up the whole Nick Fury and SHIELD Marvel Mythos!!
Don't get me wrong here!
I think Samuel L Jackson has done some really GREAT stuff acting-wise in the past and some really BAD stuff too (Hell, don't come down on me for saying THIS...but...I liked him as Mace Windu and I lked his Pimp scumbag role in Jackie Brown too!! Ha!!)
But if I recall from my Comic Book reading days a kid? Nick Fury was White NOT Black (Unless Marvel changed the characters background and looks in some sort of "revamping" of the character and his background and the SHIELD history?)
Looks/Sounds like Marvel was beginning to backslide back into comic book movie adaptation hell it was known for prior to the first two X-Men Movies, Incredible Hulk and Iron Man
I sincerely hope that they choose someone who looks more like the Comic Book Version of Nick Fury from back in the70-ies, 80-ies and 90-ies
Just my 75 cents worth here folks -
And Rob Lowe is already inquiring at Marvel about the Tony Stark role opening.
-
sam doesn't turn down roles it will all work out in the end.........
-
Remember there was a time when Favreau wasn't sure if they'd be bringing him back.
-
once they completely fuck up the captain america movie, they're not going to want to go anywhere near an avengers film
-
Patrick McGoohan is dead.
-
Nick Fury was turned black in the Ultimate universe (Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate Avengers, etc.). Since neither Marvel or DC can create quality black superheroes (outside of Luke Cage and Black Panther), they needed to do a re-imaging. Pretty lame, although the charcter in the Ultimate universe does work.
-
to get people talking about the film....and then bam...here's Sam as Fury....
-
...F*cking care about this because????? Who gives a &%$#! about Jackson NOT playing Fury.
Have it be another person. They use deception all the time at S.H.I.E.L.D. Make it a woman. Kid.
House plant. Etc. -
One of the coolest guys on the planet. Sad news.

Scott Glen, Chris Cooper, Bruce Campbell, Ed Harris, Harvey Keitel, Ted Levine, Bruce Willis.

DON CHEADLE! Let Michael Jai White play War Machine. Easier to re-cast War Machine than a black Fury, IMO
-
Not that I give a shit, but come on. Ed Norton will most certainly not come back as Hulk in an Avengers film. Replacing Terrence Howard (whether you like him or not, its a dumb fucking move) and now this with Sam?! Samuel L. is sort of a joke these days, but seriously-- who the fuck can you possibly get to fill his shoes?
-
on my motherfucking helicarrier! Man, they better make this happen. They can't do that Iron Man epilogue tease and then take it back. Jackson IS Fury. If you doubt how a black Fury fits with a broader Marvel universe read the Ultimate Origins (oddly enough, the only Ultimates series where Fury doesn't look like Jackson). In that Fury was an ex-military criminal who was experimented on in the buildup to the supersoldier formula, so they combined his story with the black Cap story from the main universe. It's actually a pretty good explanation and would certainly work for the movie. But goddamnit get Jackson back and get Norton! There hasn't been an official word on him being out of the series. Make it happen Marvel. You had 2 of the highest grossing films of last year that didn't have Batman.
-
Id ask James MacAvoy. Brilliant actor, slightly nerdy, 100% hunk.
-
but i remember reading that they actually asked Sam if it be a problem having their new black Fury look like him. apparently he's drawn to look similar if not totally like Sam so having him play the part makes sense in that respect.
-

-
My mind raced and I thought I was reading "Samuel L. Jackson No Longer in ANYTHING."
-
Iron Man will make a great franchise, Downey or not. While I don't want to see Tom Cruise in the part, I'm sure Tony Stark could survive recasting.
Both Hulks were decent moves (decent = not Punisher). Norton, Goldblum, Duchovny, Hollywood has enough nerdy guys to pick up the part. If only they would cut out this shrek bullshit and use a real human being. Kenneth Branaugh on Thor could be Ang Lee's Hulk, or it could be Nolan's on Batman. Great filmmaker either way. Blade will be back. Vampires are always popular. I prefer Snipes, but Blade doesn't need a big actor, just a good director. If Raimi does Spidey 4, I'm for it. If Uwe Boll did Spidey 4, people would still line up.
Marvel's fine. Just the usual bunch of dickheads in a building, but they'll make films til the hero-craze is over. -
undervalues their talent. It was their crappy treatment of their writers and artists that pushed them to leave and form Image all those years ago. Some things never change I guess. It is sad that the creation of a consistant Marvel Movie Universe seems to be crumbling before we got much from it other than a cameo or two.
-
Thanks for jumpin on the Obvious Bus. Just so you know, Tony Stark(psst...who is Iron Man) is an alcoholic too.
-
D.L. Hughley, unless of course Grace Jones is available.
-
Seriously, he's an old white guy. 40 years worth of the character's history, back when comics sold a hell of a lot more than they do today, trumps a handful of issues from the last five years. I know plenty of people who recognized Charlton Heston's character from "True Lies" as a Nick Fury knockoff who haven't been in a comic store in 20 years. He's not that major of a character to people out of comics, and even among those who know (vaguely) who he is, he's an irritable white guy. Take any tough old character actor and stick an eyepatch on him, and it'll be fine.
"Ultimate" Fury was never anything special beyond the nod to Sam Jackson to begin with. I wasn't eager to see Sam Jackson playing a stereotype of himself as Nick Fury. -
Right?
-
I call Shannannigans! S.H.O.P™ Standard Hollywood operating proceedures. Sure there's a financial crisis going on everywhere but Ironman made a bejusus™ amount of money I'm sure they'll squeek out some drakma for Sam the Man Jackson!!!! ooooor there's Shia.
-
*sigh*
-
I was really looking forward to watching Jackson yell all his lines like he does in every freaking role he ever plays. "I'm furious, aren't I? Shouldn't I be shouting? Hm?"
-
Seriously, though, Marvel blew the bank on development of Iron Man and Incredible Hulk now they're trying to get 4 separate movies (IM2, Avengers, Captain America, Thor) all off the ground with a lump sum of cash so they're cutting corners everywhere. Totally bullshit to be PROMISED Samuel L. Jackson Nick Fury at the end of Iron Man then totally reneg on it. By this point, Marvel is going to be doing Avengers with paper mache.
-
Has the look of classic Fury, could possibly pull off the attitude. Though after batnippleman he's probably avoiding anything associated with comics.
-
clint eastwood is nick fury anyways.
we need a marvel movie to deal with this alternative universe crap. -
Replacing Terrence Howard was an upgrade to the franchise but not resigning Sam Jackson is a mistake...
-
SAME PERFORMANCE. EVERY MOVIE.
-
With an all-star superhero movie like "The Avengers"...you gotta pay everybody. Robert Downey Jr. gotta get paid. Favreau gotta get paid. The dude who stars in Thor gotta get paid. Ed Norton/new Hulk actor gotta get paid. Whoever is playing Captain America gotta get paid. SLJ gotta get paid. So you're already $100M in the hole before you even think about production costs other than casting.
-
So let me get this straight... making Nick Fury a black man f*cks up the entire SHIELD mythos, huh? Kindly explain that morsel of logic.
Considering the way Geekland was absolutely buzzing after the SLJ/Nick Fury tidbit at the end of Iron Man, I'm surprised at the animosity. Oh, if only The Spirit hadn't become the movie everyone loves to hate (ripping on the "fans" not the movie!) Poor Sam. TallBoy66 said it, though...
BtW, I love Bruce Campbell, but he is WAY too goofy/lovable to be Nick Fury. -
It was truly great and so was our own Captain Marvel. But times have changed and his form dipped and he's out. Thing is I still worship the Pride of the South no matter what team they put out. Same with these movies, sure I'd like the cast to remain consistent, but as long as the films are great who cares. If same Sam's talked his way out of the role by being greedy, then get someone else in. I won't care too much. Play Up Pompey
-
that they're trying to go Batman Begins with the whole Marvel Universe, by way of deleting any/all references to some of the silly/stupid characters involved? Certainly, if you're aiming for a 'hero in the real modern-day world setting' it would be difficult to find a way to add a mythological Norse god and a stereo-typical comic book insect-man who is so overwhelmingly lame, he makes the short-lived Live Action Tick show look like a Watchmen spin-off.
-
It doesn't fit at all next to what Favreau and RDJ did. The new Hulk was a truly generic film. Which is unsurprising since that's EXACTLY what they shot for.
-
Iron Man II is going to make a profit. You can afford to give Sam a role.
-
I used to love the guy but now he's in EVERYTHING (except this, of course, by the sounds of it!). Every month seems to be Samuel L Jackson movie month with appearances in a different movie every week. I used to love the guy but does he not half something else to do other than make movies? Is it some sort of addiction? It's a bit like when you've been dating someone for two years and you still like them but, well, where did all the excitement go?Sorry Sam.
-
SLJ simply could not compete with the class that is The Hoff...
-
I find the 2 year mark is when you introduce the anal fucking.
-
Understand that I want Sam Jackson in it but...if it's not meant to be...
Clint Eastwood.
Tommy Lee Jones.
Ian McShane.
Harrison Ford.
Kurt Russel (the most obvious one I know but really? Snake works)
As far as recasting Bruce Banner goes, all due respect to Edward Norton but, anything he can do Sam Rockwell can do just as well and, probably, for less money. -
Making him white fucks up the continuity in the movieverse for a lot of people. Those that have never read the books only do know Fury as the black one, so it seems to be more trouble than it's worth.
-
Nic Fury should be the original, not a crappy Ultimates version. Sam Jackson is highly overrated anyhow.
-
how the fuck did you work Sol Campbell into that?
-
He wants too much money. He does a "favor" cameo, probably knowing he can use it as leverage later on.
How many scenes does Jackson/Fury even need in IM2, anyway? His role is probably limited to a few minutes, and he's probably not being reasonable with regards to the $.
Just recast Nick Fury as a white guy. Stark is brought to SHIELD HQ and is introduced to the real Fury who explains Jackson's Fury as a decoy. SHIELD didn't know if they could trust Stark and used a decoy on him. Problem solved.
Isn't Sam Jackson just a little over-exposed anyway? Is anyone gonna really miss him after one little cameo that's tacked on after the end credits. -
and he'll be in 20-40 other movies this year anyway
-
For the most part, they haven't produced a book worth reading in years let alone buying. They haven't listened to their fans for even longer. So makes sense to me.
-
..reluctantly of course. First they dump Howard, who worked great with RDJ, now SMJ is out the picture? WTF Marvel.
-
Fuck, he can dress up as Blade if he wants to too. Maybe chop someone's head off. Wasn't there a vampire named Morbius or something in Marvel?
-
some of the posts right above mine.
-
This about Iron Man! Who cares about Jackson bring us Iron Man 2!
-
You know when Iron Man 1 was coming out it seemed that every decision Marvel made was brilliant....Favs as director...Terrence Howard as Rhody...ROBERT DOWNEY AS PRETTY MUCH A CHARACTER HE WAS BORN TO PLAY...Stan Winstone as the suit designer...Jeff Bridges as Stane...I even like Paltrow as Pepper...All brilliant moves and you got a brilliant movie...Never a point from beginning to release did I think this movie based on the decisions wouldn't be awesome...and it was....BUT NOW...every decision since has been the opposite....DELAYING RESIGNING FAVREAU? FIRING HOWARD(Though I like Cheadle) Pushing up the time table against Favs wishes...NEW WRITER...and now putting in jeopardy the coolest IDEA(THE CONTINUITY OF ONE COMIC BOOK UNIVERSE) Marvel had by 86ing Sam as Nick. DON'T FUCK THIS UP MARVEL...Fix it...Sign Sam god damn it and Lock it up! LOCK IT THE FUCK UP!!

Incredible Hulk seemed like it got butchered in editing
by blindambition238
-
He played a VERY convincing conflicted spy. I feel much more confident about his casting now.
-
Christ is everything to Fury now and he will bear no scrutiny for that.
-
First Howard and now Jackson...sorry bout that first post.
-
He's not the real Nick Fury i grew up reading. Those dumb asses never even thought what the price tag would be for a S.L.J. rather than an unknown. They need to cast a Nick Fury who meets up with Capt. America during WW2 instead. Then age him for the future.
-
If they don't pay enough,. He'll walk. If they pay him enough for "THe Man 2", he'll do it. He's a worse Hollywood whore than Cage.
-
This sounds like a start of one of the biggest backstep clusterfucks ever made. Right up Rothman's street.
-
Why does Avengers even need the current Actors cast? Just recast the Avengers movie with smaller actors. They all get recast anyway over time anyway. Theres no need to connect them all together in each movie. Norton's Banner could be done by anyone. Bana was better. Its a shame Bana was in the the crappy one.
-
Hoff for Fury would be fucking great!!!!
-
Unless they can talk Morgan Freeman into an eyepatch, I want my Sammy back.
-
MAN i hope he is going to play Nick Fury as well as War Machine and allah willing, they'll even let him play Ironman. I mean he is the pussiest actor to come along in a long time, why not make him all the bad asses in the comic world.... DON CHEDLE FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!
-
Sam's alright but if he walks it's no big deal - they only showed him after the credits - just get somebody else. I don't care what skin color the guy has, just give me a cool ex-military superspy in an eyepatch. George Clooney would a be great choice (if he agreed to it). Nick Nolte too, but he might be too old. Not that Denzel Washington would do one of these, but he'd be a good choice too. Wesley Snipes is great at action and one-liners but, hopefully, Nick Fury has to do more than kick ass. Snipes is kind of humourless and doesn't have a lot of range. Hollywood pretty much uses the same four or five black male actors - I'm sure there are plenty of talented unknowns out there they could sign. They don't really need a big name for Nick Fury since everyone remembers how good the first one was and they're keeping the director and the lead.
-
Cause I said so. Feel better?
-
not that this fits here, but he had a quite a long career and left us with a couple of timeless characters.
-
every movie needs a squeeky voiced butt monkey
Howard was Iron Mans JarJar -
Jackson never sounded right to me in the role. Marvel suits are probably afraid after seeing 'The Spirit'. A few names came to mind, all of which sound odd. But I think that Alec Baldwin, Robert Redford, or Denis Leary would work as Nick Fury.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdSUrtFdXUQ
-
just say he's 'busy' or something. then spend your cash on getting him the avengers. thats where he matters. iron man 2 should be an iron man story, not an avengers story.
-
Think about it.
-
Any dumb sack of shit knows the casting of these films is integral to the success and Jackson is a smart choice.
They slipped on the Hulk film, Marvel really cant delude themselves they have a winning formula YET. -
GreatOne3...thanks for the update/info on the re-imagining of the Nick Fury Character in the Marvel-verse.
Frozen
There is no "animosity" as you put it in response to my posting about what I think/feel is a total miscasting of the Character...if you read my posting the way it was written? You will notice that I said I like SLJ and a lot of his stuff and there is also stuff of his that was gawd awful bad too.
Up until Hugh Jackman cast as Wolverine, Michael Chiklis cast as The Thing, Wesley Snipes as Blade (at least in the first two movies) Tobey McGuire as Spiderman and Robert Downey Jr cast as Tony Stark/Iron Man..the majority of
Marvel Comic Book Movies have been terrible and completely miscast and horribly made (Uhhhhh...Daredevil, Elektra, The Hulk...just to name a few here)
And...
Yeah, making Nick Fury Black fucks up the Original SHIELD Mythos...just like, ohhhh U dunno...casting a White Actor to play Blade would fuck that mythos/series up...no "animosity"...just the truth from someone who use to read the old comics and remembers that way it use to be way back when -
I realize that comic book geeks aren't the bean counters in these studios but I was hoping that at least Marvel...a fucking comic book company...would know better than this. When you consider how much a movie costs and how much a great movie makes, I'm sure what Samuel L. Jackson is asking for, or what Terrance Howard was asking for, compared to what Marvel wanted to pay them, is a paltry sum.
-
Maybe they saw him in The Spirit and said "Pass"

FFS, Marvel. Just pay the man. Juggle the books with the print arm and get it done. Take it out of what Mark Millar's making, he's not really earning it.
-
They wouldn't pay for Terrence Howard, and now they wont pay for Jackson. They must hate black people or something.
-
I'm glad...I hope He doesn't sign! I don't want ULTIMATE Nick Fury...I want the Nick Fury I grew up with!
-
I like Sam Jackson, but the guy seems pretty indiscriminate with the roles he selects. At this point he may as well do all his Marvel cameos for a case of beer each. Between each cameo, he can ride the exposure into his 7 annual well-paid supporting roles in shitty films.
And really, how is Sam NOT been tapped for a Uwe Boll production yet? That's gotta be the ultimate test of a Hollywood mercenary. -
Epic fail for Marvel.
-
Seriously... has Marvel not learned anything from watching Fox handle F4 and X-Men? If this goes sour, this will be far worse than any shit Rothman and Ratner could ever churn out, simply because Marvel will be nosediving from a much higher cliff, seeing how perfectly they started out. God damn it, Maisel and Feige. Pull your fucking wallets out and - as was stated previously - LOCK IT the fuck UP.
-
Hail me, muddas.
-
Come on people Terrance Howard now Sam Jackson? Next thing you know Ironman is going to be fighting the ACLU in his Grand Wizzard armor...

Yeah he deserves to die and I hope he burns in hell!!
by indysbastardson
J/K, but seriously don't ever put the names Nick Fury and Shia Lebouf in the same sentence. I think my heart skipped a beat when I read that sentence. You!..You're good, you..
-
Its not, it's really not. Fury is in the movie for 2 minutes AFTER THE CREDITS. No big deal. Whoever said Kurt Russell has my vote.
-
Bring back Goyer to write, Boll to direct. $100 million opening weekend. Just bring back the classic exchange: "I'll see you in hell!" "Let's do lunch." and they'll be on the gravy train with biscuit wheels.
-
Marvel had to partner with Universal to make Hulk borrow money to make Iron Man and. They borrowed 525 million. Half a billion dollars. From Merril Lynch. Which is in trouble (being bought by Bank of America I think), so I believe SLJ when he says Marvel is having cash flow problems. They spent a shitload on advertising (which was the right move pre-financial crisis) so even though Iron Man made money, they may not have much of that initial 500 million left. Too bad.
-
SLJ needs to hold direct talks with Favreau and make this happen. Don't let the suits fuck this up.
-
Look, Iron Man 1 worked because it was Tony Stark centric. The film has to be about this man, the way the Spidey movies are about Peter or the Nolan Bat franchise is about Bruce. The whole Avengers idea is an ill-conceived brainfart from the Marketing idiots and the overzealous Marvel people who want to squeeze every last dime from their other characters as well. You don't need to dilute the movie and make it a watered-down Iron Man as he teams up with a series of other superhero ássholes. Stark is interesting enough on his own. By adding the Nick Fury and Avengers angle, you just make it cheesy and add too many unnecessary characters that shouldn't even be in Stark's world.
-
AND HE'S NOT DOING IT!!!
-
if they were going for a classic Nick Fury hell yeah he would be it.
Other than that pay attention boys and girls because you are watching the Hollywood machine in action. They are taking what had the potential to be a cool movie franchise and running it into the ground before it even gets going. -
Like many a fan here--more specifically many a Marvel fan--I rejoiced at the idea of Marvel actually owning all of its properties and being able to tell stories it wanted to tell. As an added hope, I expected them to try and act in good faith when dealing with talent. That said, hasn't Marvel learned anything in watching studios try to screw people? Must they adhere to the same stupid moves essentially giving the people who made them a success at the box office--this includes the casual non-fan btw--the finger? I really want to believe this is all smoke and the Hellicarrier is not on fire.
-
Yeah, you know why? Because the "Ultimate" titles will be in a penny to $.50 box at your local comic book, no, local USED BOOK STORE after 2010, and the "Ultimate" titles is the ONLY place where Jackson's likeness as Nick Fury exists.
You want the REAL Fury? Go check out Steranko's ageless, classic stuff. Go check out Fury with that big-ass rifle in the regular post-Civil War Marvel titles. Check out Garth Ennis's two great Nick Fury tales for the ages.
For f&*k's sake -- get Kurt Russell to be Nick! He's pretty much there with his Snake Plissken role!!!! Tried and true!!!!!
And please, please don't get on no f*&kin' "racist" tip with me -- the original character is the original character, end of f*&kin' story. YOU KNOW IT'S TRUE. -
... to keep the fans interested. Sam probably has signed a deal for several movies already, in the same fashion Liev Schreiber had with the Scream saga (cameo in the first one, huge role in the 2nd, appearance in the third)
-
Jesus someone make that happen.
Samuel L. who? -

Pay the man! Who doesn't want the king of cool back as Nick Fury?
-
Charlton Heston, circa 1975. Hell, just a take a gander at him with that eye patch in "True Lies" and tell me that he wasn't playing the director of SHIELD.
-
Now, wouldn't THAT be cool?
-

So THE SPIRIT can get Samuel L., but IRONMAN 2 can't???
by theghostwholurks
The idea that one of the biggest flops of the year could score talent that the sequel to one of the year's BIGGEST HITS can't (or won't), is pretty ironic.I mean wasn't that the IDEA about making Nick Fury LOOK like SLJ in the comics in the first place and then casting the REAL Samuel L. Jackson in the Iron Man film??? Pay The Man what he wants, Marvel... you'll get it back in spades in box office receipts. Dopes.
-
You got any cheese?

Everything's going to be fine..Sam will be back
by t 1000 xp professional
So far the casting has been superb, and with the unfortunate loss of Terrence Howard you can even say they UPGRADED to Don Cheadle..... I don't want to generalize the talkbacking public but geez it's true. It seems you guys are always complaining... " Marvel is screwed up" " they can't manage their talent" blah blah blah.. were you the same people that have worshiped their last couple movies.. Relax, everything'll be fine
-
which is probably why it would never happen.
Kurt would make a great Dark Knight returns Batman, IMHO. That won't ever happen either. -
in a dress
-
they are FUCKING THIS UP!
typical lame ass follow up to an awesome first instalment - cue the Wachowski Bros -
neither could loose their gut in time for filming
Both are sporting some serious thickness these days -
Remember when it looked like that wasn't going to happen for the last Potter film? It's just behind the scenes negotiations, he'll be back, motherfuckers!
-
Don't let them fuck this up for me. Use your pundent powers or some shit.
-
Then Dennis Quaid (though it;ll be just like his General Hawk in GI Joe). Clint Eastwood (yes even now) would be superb as Fury. In any case I think Marvel fooled us (me for sure) into thinking we were going to get an amazing set of movies. But I think I'll have to settle for 2...maybe 3 (if Iron Man 2 maintains the quality of the first) great movies. Too bad. Maybe they can try again in a decade or so.
-
I'm sure everybody forgives him for The Spirit. Don't punish Sam, and all of us, just because he takes every stinky turd that floats past!
-
Cover me, you limp dick fuckups!
-
I like Jackson, but when he walked on screen in Iron Man it didn't really feel like Fury to me. It was just Sam Jackson's same old look with an eye patch. Kinda like his Shaft look, actually. (Remember that one? Me neither.)I'd like to see Jackson try harder to put himself more into the role visually and with his delivery. He showed signs of that depth in Invincible, I thought, but was a million miles from it in the SW prequels. With Downey, Bridges and Paltrow all overachieving in breathing 3 dimensions into their characters in the first IM, Jackson will need to step it up to be consistent with them.I believe he can and hope he will.
-
If you want a Black Man, get a big tough one. I like Common for it.
-
Sam Jackson is the new Gene Hackman. Dude's in EVERYTHING. I won't cry over Iron Man.
-
Jan 14, 2009 11:37:16 PM CST
Since he's already supposedly attached to the movie anyway...
by ironhelix
...why not Mickey Rourke for Nick Fury? he's the right color, and he's not Sam Jackson. Sam Jackson would do gay porn if they paid him enough. his career is a perfect example of throwing shit at a wall, just to see what sticks.
-
...for the PART. not for, you know... the earth. i love black people.
-
that Marvel is going to let their grand scheme fall apart. Either Nick Fury is not in the movie, or they'll get Sam to play him. Sam likes to shoot his mouth off. Can we get Johnny Fav to confirm or deny this?
-
No compromise.
That cameo is badass in a world where badass is overused. -
So there are some single blockbusters without Sam Jackson´s involvement? Big Deal. Skip Fury, cast Jarvis and you got some "Old School Avengers".
-
Problem solved.
-
Me neither.
-
dat would be tite dawg
-
rubbing elbows with Cap and the Invaders, which is potentially why they are still negotiating. Perhaps they are trying to work the character into the Captain America flick?
-
I hope this means we will finally get the real, original,WHITE,Nick Fury and not a degenerated imitation based on the repetitive movie personality of Samuel Jacksons.
White Nick Fury isnt just about his skin color.he is a WW2 veteran,he smokes,he drinks and he fucks whores and doesnt give a crap about your opinion on this,he doesnt give a shit about his superiors ,instead he follows his personal code of ethics and honor,he does the right thing even if it conflicts the commands he has been given,he will stand for his comrades and he will kick the shit out of the enemies.and he is as cool as fuck with his eyepatch and the greyed hair.
his ultimate counterpart, the black fury doesnt even have the half qualities of the white fury, jesus i cant even remember where he has fought,i think in the Gulf War,u know where USA,UK and their lackeys UN,fought against IRAQ for OIL eer PEACE.
anyway if they bring the white Nick Fury (ofc maybe they wont bring fury at all in the sequels),then kurt russel is a great proposal for this role.
-
and 'nam vets worked until the mid '80....but neither work as hack eyed plot devices anymore....Thank god....Not that there is ANYTHING wrong with being a veteran, But did everybody have to serve in 'Nam.....of course now they are using the Gulf Wars as plot devices....This said, while Kurt Russel would make a fine white version of Fury,I hope they can get Jackson back...maybe even give him his own film...after all Russel in an eye patch? Well,it better be as Snake Pliskin, and with a better script this time....

But only if they are expanding or setting it up for a big role in Avengers. That guy needs a starring role asap.

The only reason.

by cotton mcknight
Uh okay, Ominus. Do you feel that way about the presidency too?
-
I guess I'm the only one who thinks the recasting of Fury is a good thing. Sorry guys, but I've never been able to buy Sam Jackson in a role where he couldn't be a wise-guy. "PLEASE ALLOW ME TO RETORT!!!", "I'M TIRED OF THESE MOTHER F**KIN' SNAKES ON THIS MOTHER F**KIN' PLANE!!!" This is what Sam Jackson does, and possibly better than anyone in the biz. Straight-laced, serious? Not so much.
For my money? Give me Dennis Haysbert, star of 'The Unit,' '24' and the original 'Major League.' If you need a guy who can play a bad-ass 'man in charge,' my money is on 'Snake Doctor.' -
are also great. Sam's alright, but he's basically been phoning it in since... Crap, since for a long time. What was the last thing he was really good in? Why not recast? If they're short of money the most important place for it is the star, the director, and the film itself, not an easily recastable supporting character. Also, why not just make Nick Fury into an explosion?
-
I think Rourke would be the perfect choice. He certainly looks like he's been through a few
wars -
no i dont.
-
Or get him to do a Deep Rising sequel! You know you want it.
-
and i too would like a deep rising sequel

Ultimate Nick Fury was nothing more than Jackson in an eyepatch
by chewtoy
There was no character there for him to play. It would be like drawing and writing Reed Richards to look and act exactly like all the stereotypical Jeff Goldblum roles, then casting Goldblum to play himself wearing a blue suit. Not only is it lazy, it removes any trace of the character. Movie Fury was never going to be anything more than Sam Jackson in an eyepatch with that casting... That's all he was in the end credit scene as well.
-
Oh, he doin' somethin. He doin' somethin... man, if you seen this shit!
-
If recasting is the new buzz, I'm all for St. Nick busting a cap in someone's ass as Nick Fury. Do it now.
-
they are going to have to recast all of these parts at verious points in time due to various reasons. RDJ will not be iron man forever etc etc so get over it, I think it's cool this is happening at all, I'm not gonna sit here and bitch everytime an actor changes. ITS BOUND TO HAPPEN OVER TIME, looking beyond the initial avengers movie. Obviously it would be better if it didn't happen, but money makes the world go round and people age so deal with it. This nick fury thing seems preemptive though and I agree that Sam better not be holding out for huge cash because he's not a draw, he's not THAT good of an actor and just cause they based the character off you doesn't mean you need to play him, they could make him white again...that would set the civil rights movement back 15 possibly 30 minutes!!!! I'm done with this rambling borderline coherent rant now
-
hell, the film wouldn't even need iron man at that point.
-
But he can't even get a Escape sequel to fruition along with the proposed Snake Plissken Anime and Video game. After the flop that was Death proof, i think he's gotta eat. The powers that be won't even bother to cast him but we can only dream, right?
-
and many think he cannot be replaced. Give me a break.
-
in ultimatum it's revealed nick fury is a super soldier and fought since world war 2.
-
Sure he's done lame ass films: SOAP and Black Snake Moan, but he's no hack just overexposed.Sam admits he's a Comic fan as well as an avid gamer. In other words, he's a geek just like the rest of us.Oh, and we all know that Ultimates Nick Fury is orginally based on Sam's image riiight?i would pick Sam over that drunken hass-been Hoff any "mutha-fukin" day.
-
and nothing more. Like when studio people were leaking the idea that Jake Gylenhall would make a great Peter Parker for Spider-Man 2, when Tobey Maguire was apparently asking for too much coin.
-

Nick Fury was nothing more than Jackson in an eyepatch-SO?!?!!?
by j2talk
you say that like its a bad thing.....SamJackson is like
Tom Cruise,Will smith or Brad Pitt...you are hiring him to be himself onscreen...hell you could even put Clint Eastwood in there-course he has truly reached
ICON status the others have a LONG way to go..... -
via the Infinity Formula, which has slowed his age.
-
Hiring actors to overshadow the roles they're playing in a comic book movie *is* a bad thing. Not only is it a waste of source material (you might not care about Nick Fury, but I'm sure Marvel does and wouldn't mind establishing him in the public's consciousness) but it's a distraction to the movie goer... that bit after the credits screamed "stunt" when an actor who could blend into the role might not have. Casting stars to play themselves can work if the movie is a vehicle for that actor, but this isn't going to be Jackson's movie. And Jackson is talented enough to differentiate his characters when he's given enough to work with, but he's not going to find it in Ultimate Fury. Having him play himself in an eyepatch is a dead end, creatively bankrupt endeavor for all involved. If you're an audience member who really wants to see it, just squint at "S.W.A.T." while trying to imagine the eyepatch and that they're wearing SHIELD uniforms.

dont let the door hit you on the way out sam.

But so was Reed Richards and Ben Grimm originally. And Prof. X fought in Korea. But you don't hear many people bringing up their war records recently.
Nick Fury originally appeared in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos and then was brought into Marvel mainstream in the FF because at that time WWII had only been over for about 18 years so it would be very likely Nick was still around. It was only years later when writers realized that a 50 or 60-year-old Nick wouldn't be very likely to be running around as an active SHIELD agent that they came up with the Infinity Formula. The infinity Formula was just a plot device to explain his lack of aging, just like Cap frozen in ice or Wolverine's slow aging.
My point for all of this is that I don't think the movie version of Nick Fury has to be a WWII veteran (unlike Cap), nor do I think he has to be white. He does, however, have to have some combat experience, have an eye-patch and smoke a big stogie, now matter what Quesada thinks. -
a franchise, we'd get a Howling Commandos movie, then a 60's, 70's spy sequel a la Steranko, and then a contemporary Marvel U SHIELD flick.
-
One doesn't associate Reed or Ben with WWII like they do Fury, as they didn't have an ongoing war comic.
-
Crap like The spiderman trilogy may still putting bums in seats, but all the Marvel movies of recent years save Iron Man are pure crap. They forgot you can't make movies like you do comics, with a better one coming after the shit one this month, it doesn't work that way. The Hulk sucked, X-Men 3 sucked, Wolverine will suck (should be the mini-series not some stupid origin crap), Iron Man was only good because of 1/ Downey and 2/ Jon Favreau. Downey already looked bad in his Hulk cameo with an horrifying haircut making him look like he materialised from the 80's using a time machine. Marvel films can go to hell. They are dead.
-
Emanuel Lewis as Nick Fury!
-
And halfway through the movie switch to Gary Coleman.
