NBC To Order Three Bonus Episodes Of ER??

Published at:  Jan 09, 2009 12:39:44 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

NBC’s “ER,” which has been winning its timeslot all season (thanks no doubt to hot new lead-in “30 Rock”), may be temporarily resuscitated once again.

Friday morning’s Variety reports that the medical drama, which was to end its 15-year run on March 12, may get three more episodes appended to its final season -- as part of a deal that would see NBC order six episodes of a new series called “Police.”

Both “ER” and “Police” are overseen by writer-producer John Wells.

There’s no telling what this means for the looming Ian McShane vehicle “Kings,” which was to take over the longtime “ER” for the balance of the season.

Come autumn, the Thursday edition of “The Jay Leno Show” will inherit the 10 p.m. timeslot “ER” has occupied since 1994.

Read all of Variety’s story on the matter here.

But, seriously kill off ER already. Enough is enough. Also, John Wells, how about putting on a show called 'Douche' instead of 'Police.' Sounds more fun and less generic. Plus, I want to see more Ian McShane, so bounce ER.

30 Rock has been on Thursdays since the fifth episode, and Friends wasn't between Seinfeld and ER, it was on at 8. Or have you forgotten the 5000 horrible sitcoms NBC tried to launch at 8:30 between Friends and Seinfeld?

Rumor Of The Day: Hiro to leave Heroes.

    by amy chasing

It may have nothing to do with ER, but it has something to do with NBC...

He's supposedly asked to leave the show at the end of the current season, in part because of a lack of screen time. NBC has not yet decided whether he will be released from his contract; however, there is an apparent "death" planned for this season (somewhere in the last few episodes). Not that that means much in Heroes.

Enjoy this news with a pinch of salt and back to your regular TB.

    ER

    by lovek

Ya know, other than a season here and there, I've generally watched ER since the beginning. It's definitely had its rough patches, and they've sometimes focused on characters that just needed to go away, but overall it's always been a high-quality show. Very few shows have had the ability to make me teary-eyed, but ER has done it many times. And NO other show could change out the entire cast multiple times and stay consistent, relevant, and entertaining. It's deserved it's long run on NBC. That said, I think this should carry on as originally planned. Let it go out on top.

So the last episode of ER won't be the last episode?

    by big jim

I'm guessing these 3 new episodes will deal more with the cops of Police, basically a 3-hour backdoor pilot. Odds are whatever ER cast members we see will be whoever is left after the finale (those that don't die or move on, or wake up in Victoria Principal's shower). Or maybe the last episode of ER will have Morris giving his autistic sister, Neela a new snow-globe; he takes away the hospital one and gives her one with a police station in it.

Isn't some run-down crap wanna-be version of The Wire now that it is over and more people are taking notice of how great it is. In my head, the people in this show are going to refer to themselves as Po-Lice all the time, and its going to be cheesy and awful, especially since even if it could be good, NBC would neuter it. I am interested in Kings though, definitely. I will be watching that Pilot.

    by mr.underwater

Is he a ghost? A zombie? He's one of the few cast members who left by dying (so he couldn't take the obligatory three-year ER vacastion. Hell, even Jerry the desk clerk came back...), yet he's the one they decided to give a last lap to.

Did Clooney's schedule just open up or something? I know it's winning the timeslot, but it's got to be something more than that and the Police eps. It takes time to write and produce extra eps. Some of that stuff, including schedules, is worked out quite far in advance. Odd.

    ER still quality tv

    by oisin5199

Yup, I still watch it, but I've only seen the first seasons in repeats. Started watching right after Carter's friend (Lucy?) died. Despite the fact that some plots and character development have fallen into predictable patterns - (ex: new maverick doc is an asshole, breaks the rules, womanizes, eventually becomes sympathetic, then the hero, or new chief is abrasive, 'shakes things up' in the ER, and eventually chills out and is embraced) - the show still has some quality episodes. Who would have thought that the idiot Morris would become the best character? - to me, his transformation has been almost as cool and gradual as Wesley's on Angel. Anyway, this has been a good final season. And mr. underwater, the return of Mark Greene was extremely well done. It was a flashback, but experienced from the perspective of Angela Bassett's character, the new chief Banfield. She remembered Dr. Greene taking care of her son, and comforting her when he died. So it wasn't a gratuitous use (despite the always horrible NBC ads) - the story was all about Banfield and her experiences, but the scenes were extra poignant, because it was clear that it took place during Greene's treatments and we knew he was dying as well. Can't wait to see how this show ends.

Herc: Learn how to read TV ratings data

    by snowpuff

    30 Rock is Hot?

Wrong. 30 Rock's ratings have been... okay. Which for NBC is HOT but on the ratings chart barely beats repeats of Old Christine on CBS. That's NEW episodes of 30 Rocks vs. repeats of some stupid show with that lady from Seinfeld.

    by itchy

I totally wanted to hate it. I really did. I thought it sounded corny, and schlocky and just flat out terrible. But I watched it. And you know what ? It was one of the best hours of drama I have ever watched, in any format, on any channel. I honestly had tears in my eye, which hasn't happened since my dog died 8 years ago. It was that good. You might as well cancel the Emmy's next year, because if they don't win every one of them for pulling that off, there's no justice in the world.

    by anakin whoopass

ER is still a good drama, and as a last remnant of the NBC I used to like, I'm happy it gets a little more time. NBC is making a big mistake with Leno, just as it did choosing him over Letterman in the first place, and it's a shame NBC no longer sees Thursday 10/9 as its top drama slot as it has since Hill Street Blues.

    by bob loblaw law blog

I started watching ER in high school and have never missed an episode (thanks to blank VHS tapes, helpful family members and, of course, DVR as of late). It's consistently been a great drama with fascinating characters. Those who say it's not as good as its glory days seem to assume that Seasons 1-6 or so were flawless... they weren't (don't get me wrong, they were damn good, just not flawless). If you just look at the characters that have been introduced post-Clooney, it's a pretty staggering list: Kovac, Lockheart, Pratt, Chen, Romano, Rasgotra, Taggert, Gates, Malucci, Gallant, etc.I'm all for ER ending its run while many people still enjoy the show... it's not the ratings juggernaut it once was, but it's still quality show (even if the occasional helicopter comes by and kills someone...).
