SHAZAM! Kersplat!!

Published at:  Jan 07, 2009 9:06:40 AM CST

Merrick here...

The frequently discussed, oft-reported SHAZAM! movie project seems to have collapsed (for a while, at least) due to collision with inconsisent executives, the writer's strike, Warner Bros' assimilation of New Line, and more. This per screenwriter John August.

By “dead,” I mean that it won’t be happening. I don’t think it’s on the studio’s radar at all. It may come back in another incarnation, with another writer, but I can say with considerable certainty that it won’t be the version I developed.

...says August in a blog entry that can be found HERE.

There's some interesting material in his blog post - this is a perfect example of how film development can often become an illogical, frustrating, and even self-defeating hell. It's a compelling and fast read...check it out.

Efforts to bring SHAZAM! to the screen have gone down (and then collapsed) more often than my slutty ex-wife on a night of drunken Tejano debauchery; it's beginning to seem this project is pretty much cursed.

Also, one has to wonder if...between THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO movie being developed by Stephens Cannell and Herek, the assurance of another SUPERMAN theatrical of some sort, the production of an IRON MAN sequel, and the recently announced HANCOCK sequel/prequel/whatever...perhaps the marketplace is too crowded for further films of such similar conceits?

    Perhaps It's Better This Way...

    by daytripper69

I haven't read the script, but it seems to me that they haven't quite approached the good Captain properly. Ever wonder why the Captain Marvel stories from the 40s stand up much better today than the Superman and Batman stories from the 40s? .... CM is supposed to clever and whimsical, almost a sendup of the ridiculousness of the superhero genre. Treating the property like a straightforward superhero story would be a mistake, in my opinion. I'd be more excited about this project if I had heard that the writing staff of the Simpsons (circa Seasons 3 to 7) and Brad Bird were involved. BTW, does anyone know if the movie was really going to be called "Shazam," and not "Captain Marvel?" Or does Fox own the rights to that name, too?

Good points, all. I think a good superhero movie -- more than anything else -- needs writers and directors that UNDERSTAND the character and the "flavor" of the comic being brought to the screen. That's why the suits at WB are so off the mark -- they think that Batman was successful because it was "dark", and consequently intend to apply that same "flavor" to all of their properties, which is a recipe for disaster.

    Unbreakable

    by enderandrew

I know the comic fans love the concept of a hero being taken seriously. But the film was terrible. It was slow. The direction was poor. The editing was horrible. There was no major resolution. The climax of the film is Bruce Willis walking up to Samuel L Jackson and then walking away? That is a brilliant film? Unbreakable was TERRIBLE. The funny thing is that since Watchmen will be coming out later, it won't be seen as innovative, and the comic fans will rip the adaptation, but if the Watchmen movie came before Unbreakable, I think we'd see people sing a different tune.

Since Nick Fury is clearly based on the Ultimates version, they could go this route. I don't think they will, but they could.

Thor played as a majorly strong meta-human, with a messianic complex. People around him think he's nuts, and a mutant or superhuman, but not a Norse god.

Agreed. --WONDER WOMAN and THOR are not simple.

    by jdanielp

From my perspective, THOR may be the most challenging of any superhero I know of, in realizing for the big screen. Funny thing is, I imagine the character would somehow feel more at home in an AVENGERS flick, interacting with other fantastic characters (and avoiding Thor's origins). In that sense, I find the character not nearly as challenging. (An AVENGERS flick is something many of us have been visualizing since childhood.) As to WONDER WOMAN, Rex Carsalot has it right...in that the screenplay simply needs to answer those (origin) questions and feel right within the story. And I do so love the Alex Ross approach. (THAT is what I would hope to capture on film.) And who could resist giving her the shield, sword, and golden wings from KINGDOM COME, at some point, in context of the story? Damn, I sure could imagine THAT in a climatic battle. (LOVED LOVED LOVED the bit where Superman was holding the sword, running his hand down the blade and accidentally cuts himself!)

Only too crowded for lesser comic books

    by jacksparasites

Doing a Captain Marvel film is a good idea if you make it more of a kids movie. Kids movies about powerful kids tend to succeed because the kids want to identify w/ those characters. It's wish fulfillment. That's why the comic was so popular to begin with. Darkening it would just be silly. It reminds me that I can't believe no one's made a live action Johnny Quest movie yet. But I think to avoid crowding the genre, studios should focus on A-list superhero characters. I couldn't care less about seeing a Thor movie. As far as DC is concerned there 3 A-listers are Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Then maybe there's room for a Green Arrow movie...maybe. As for Marvel, they should stick with Spiderman, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, and Dare Devil. We really don't need to see every single comic book property made into a movie franchise; we just need the ones being made to be good.

...should be approached as animated features. Not the the 2nd rate Justice League video store stuff...but more in the Incredibles style. In this way the more preposterous stuff like an invisible jet and her far from practical (yet super sexy) outfit won't seem as ridiculous.
These two heroes are far more 'fantastic' seeming than Bats or even Supes for that matter. A little harder to suspend disbelief in a live action medium. The same applies to Thor which I am still balffled as to how Marvel is going to make that fly.

    Good director

    by enderandrew

Studios are clueless and only try to copy what is successful from the previous year. But they don't understand what made those films successful. Find a good director and trust them. Try to be a little fiscally conservative within reason. It is that simple. Studios often stymie directors and shovel out crap, and then blame piracy when their crap flops. They stifle original films, and then attempt to copy the original films that succeed (like the Matrix).

You want a $500 movie with a built-in audience. Hire Zemekis and have him do a mo-cap version of Ender's Game. He knows kids and how to make a film for kids. He also knows how to make a hard-edged film. He gets better and better with mo-cap each time out. Don't change the story to center on adults, or older kids just to cast older actors. Find older kids that are good actors to voice over mo-cap on age appropriate kids for the story.

I'm telling you, mo-cap is the only way to do the Battle School, and the only way to do age appropriate kids. It is also the only way to do the Fantasy Game. Deliver a hard-edged mo-cap Ender's Game, and you can start printing money.

Warner Bros just DOES NOT GET IT !!!!!

    by jobacca

First things first-Warner Bros had NOTHING to do with the tone and style of Dark Knight. That was all Chris Nolan. Dark Knight made ungodly amounts of money so now any and all comic book movies must be exactly like Dark Knight. It is the kind of idiotic,retarded,non-logic that could only come out of a Hollywood studio. Captain Marvel has been around for what,60 years? Obviously theres something about the character the way he is that already works, yet the WB HAS to reinvent the wheel. Thats why we're going to get a Dark Superman movie(with Jon Peters favorite Black leather costume...cause you know black leather =Dark and brooding),a Dark Flash(WTF?) and the Green Lantern movie will probably feature an alcoholic Hal Jordan who flies around crying in the rain wracked with grief because he had to decapitate Sinistro(also,Green Lanterns costume will be made entirely out of Black Leather...but he WILL have a Green Lantern patch on the shoulder...to appease the fans). At this point they might just as well do that Robin TV series where Dick Grayson is referred to as DJ Jazzy Grayson and he has adventures in the circus until the ripe old age of thirty(and Batman is never ever mentioned). I've been a DC fanboy all my life, but when it comes to the movies? Make Mine Marvel!

It's interesting because you could have no problem making a more real world/true to life tale with those characters...OR go in a more fun kind of humorous direction because the mass movie going public have no pre conceived notions and would have no clue to the source material. I'm a Captain Marvel fan, and Shazam could work

    by continentalop

First off, Captain Marvel has gotten a bad rap. He isn't one of the lamest of superheroes, he is one of the greatest. At his peak his titles were selling more issues than Superman, Batman or Captain America, the other big names of the time. Plus he was referenced in a Beatles song! The only reason people don't like him now is that his comic was forced to cancel in the 50's so he never had a chance to develop, evolve and stay in the public consciousness like Batman and Superman. I mean, you think Capt. Marvel is lame, what about the Rainbow Batman? Or Blue and Red Superman? Or the Gorilla Boss of Gotham City? Or the time Superman replaced Batman as his partner in World’s Finest with Lightning Man?
Plus when people say that Superman and Batman are easy to depict in movies because of the simplicity of their origins, I say so is Marvel. I mean, he meets a wizard who gives him a magic word to say that transforms him into a superhero. A magic word! How simple is that? It is as Michael Chabon once pointed out, Captain Marvel is the ultimate example of superhero as child power fantasy!
So how do you make it? Make it a live action “The Incredibles”, and “Bolt” to a degree. Make it a "family film" (hate that term) for young people, not for adults. Make it fun and light and magical. Don’t make it for a bunch of comic geeks, like you and me, who want everything to be dark and serious.

    Make it a Chapter Serial!

    by continentalop

Ok, I have a bold suggestion: make it a chapter serial. Not a movie based on chapter serials, like Raiders or the Rocketeer, but an honest to God chapter serial. About 9-10 10 minute segments that you can show before the any WB films over the course of one summer; and you don't need them to have much character development or even plot because you are jumping from action scene to action scene (much like the old chapter serials did).
Best thing with this idea if it is popular with kids, they will force their parents to take them to every family, kids friendly WB film that Summer, no matter how crappy, just so they can see the next installment of “Shazam: The Adventures of Captain Marvel!” Hell, us adults would probably dig it because it is such a throwback idea.

    I think you're right.
I remember when a buddy and I saw Supergirl at the cinema before it died a quick death. Sure, we were mildly interested in it because it was a superhero movie. But we were primarily interested because Helen Slater was a hot chick in a hot supergirl outfit. You can't put that onscreen today and expect to be taken seriously--not because it's a superhero movie, but because it would be a scantily clad hot female superhero movie.

I've 35 and I barely remember Shazam only because of that Saturday morning cartoon series with the live action singing high-school of superheroes or whatever that crap was.

    Dwayne Johnson AIN'T Superman...

    by theghostwholurks

He'd simply be The Rock with an 'S' on his shirt. And even someone as stupid as Lois Lane wouldn't be fooled into thinking a pair of glasses could disguise that big lummox. The guy sticks out like a sore thumb wherever he is.He's better off playing Black Adam, where he can ham it up as much as he wants, be a bad guy and not have to worry about "disguising" his extremely distinctive appearance.

...and so was the cartoon. But c'mon people, the George Reeves "Superman"? The Adam West & Burt Ward "Batman"? "The Super Friend"? The old Superman/Superboy cartoon? "The Adventures of Batman and Robin" cartoon were they team up with Batmite? And finally, the episode of Scoobie-Doo guest starring the Dynamic Dou?
I won't even get into the other DC characters appearance in the Ultimate Cheese fest, "Legend of the Super-Heroes".

    Merrick's slutty ex-wife and SHAZAM!

    by leafar the lost

Merrick wrote, "Efforts to bring SHAZAM! to the screen have gone down (and then collapsed) more often than my slutty ex-wife on a night of drunken Tejano debauchery...". I need more information on that. What is her name, age, location, etc. Second, making a SHAZAM movie is pretty straight-forward. The movie going audience knows about Shazam. Once the movie is made and the commercials begin, it will have instant name recognition. If you get some to play Captain Marvel (Jon Hamm)...

    It's CAPTAIN MARVEL not SHAZAM!!!!

    by bob cryptonight

The only reason the comic books is called SHAZAM is that Marvel Comics won't let them use the "Captain Marvel" name because THEY registered the name back in the 1960s when the "Shazam" Captain Marvel was out of use. It's funny, though, when people refer to the character as Shazam.

    Superman Vs. Captain Marvel!!!

    by bob cryptonight

Someone should write a film about when DC Comics sued Fawcett Comics claiming copyright infrigement on their "Superman" JUST BECAUSE Fawcett's CAPTAIN MARVEL was selling much better than SUPERMAN. It could be sort of a comedy about the industry back then.

Why the SHAZAM movie deserves to be dead:

    by bob cryptonight

The script for this version took place in modern day and was mostly about "what if a little kid got superpowers?" That idea is the stuff of a cratively bankrupt writer. Tom Hanks' BIG with superpowers is how they described it. That ain't Captain Marvel. This movie needs to take place in a retro world with deadly robots and evil geniuses and facist dictators. Played INDIAN JONESishly straight, there is plenty of action and drama, but considering that the guy has a big yellow lightning bolt on his chest and is the product of "magic", it can't be too dark, for chrissakes.

I've always thought they should lift Alan Moore's Miracleman story for a Captain Marvel Movie. It's much better then any Captain Marvel story and since Miracleman was an intentional ripoff of Captain Marvel, it seems perfectly reasonable.
