McG To Direct Disney’s 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA Remake!!

I am – Hercules!!
Captain Nemo, unbowed by his misadventures with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, is a solo act again.
McG (“Terminator: Salvation”) will direct Disney’s remake of “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea” from a screenplay by Bill Marsilii (“Déjà vu”).
It’s based on the 1870 Jules Verne novel
about an angry European-educated 19th century Hindu prince who fights oceanic menace with a fancy submarine.
Harry says I should start offering opinions when I post something about film, so here goes. I loved McG's first "Charlie's Angels" with Bill Murray and Cameron Diaz' swirling ass. It was funny and cool and very pure cinema in my opinion, so I'm looking forward to this and "Terminator Salvation" and anything else at which the man cares to make a run.

no mcG hate yet?how much do you want to bet disney will try to make this into their next 'pirates' franchise...i can see it now, '20,001 leagues under the sea', '20,000 MORE leagues under the sea' and 'beneath 20,000 leagues under the sea'
-
Whatever. Fuck.
-
Why is this article in the teevee section? Is the new 20,000 made for television? I'm curious to see how McG's Terminator turns out, so I'll wait before making any blanket statement on the quality of this project. (And by "curious", I mean, I am curious about what other people will say, because I'm not seeing his Terminator. I saw 1 and 2; that was enough.)
-
thats all i got
-
And Johnny Depp will play an effeminate boatswain with dubious morals. I vote Zach Galifianakis for Cpt. Nemo.
-
Uh... No? That's not what the novel is about...
-
And it isn't even because of McG. Nothing to do with him. Just sounds lame.
-
and i'll see it.
-
This is not good news.
-
he'd be a good Dr. Reinhardt in a Black Hole remake too....lol
-
As a director i think MC G is well out of his depth with the terminator franchise only a director such as David Fincher has the experience of creating a dark forboding sci fi thriller which continues from the previous cameron films, so captain nemo may very well match his creative depth. Don't get me wrong salvation looks great, i just think the script will suffer and we know with the ambiguity surrounding the rating it will probably be pg13/12a (12a uk rating) that could affect it too , i think T4 has trouble tarnished all over it's name, i just hope i'm proven as i love the cameron films

THIS IS A GOOD FIT FOR McG - NO ONE CARES ABOUT 20,000 LEAGUES A
by bringingsexyback
Harmless.
-
I will for evermore refer to this project as "Necessary: The Movie."
-
uh, isn't this about the 9th or 10th remake since the 1950s Disney classic?...and guess what, they all sucked unborn seasquid! Good luck w/that.
-
Great! I hope every single goddamned sci-fi story that's been made into a movie, gets the new improved remake! Yay!! And prequels and sequels!! The Day the Earth Stood Still 2 - Still Standing Still!! 5,000 Leagues Under the Lake - Nemo's Childhood!!
Get James Cameron to redo Forbidden Planet - The Trilogy!...oh wait. -
McG's trying to win the fanboys over!
-
yea, the movie had some faults but it was at least entertaining.
-
I give them credit for at least attempting to do a different kind of 20,000 Leagues story.
-
too flashy
-
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
I COULDN'T RESIST! -
The article says the are making the movie this year. When ATLANTIS RISING was announced, I figured that there would be a competing underwater movie. The race is on.
-
Is he just cheap to hire, wtf else can recommend the douche??
-
all the quasi-intentional homo-erotic subtext of the original novel, (what with 3 grown men continually stripping and unstripping and grappling and such) makes it into the movie, so that modern audiences can either champion it or villify it or laugh at it while misunderstanding how gay sex worked in the old days. (in the old days, Having sex with either your best guy friend or a nubile young male cabin boy was something you did either before you got married to your wife or while on a suitably long sea voyage. You just weren't supposed to talk about it-either to champion it or condemn it. Don't Ask, Don't tell, and all that.)
-
Disney must have liked his work on T4. If he can handle John Connor vs. the Machines in TERMINATOR SALVATION, I guess they figure he can do Nemo against the world's naval warships and the like.
-
The McG love comes from renewed hope in the man after the new Terminator trailer, which doesn't look as sucky as anticipated. Here's the thing about that: That will be like a midling effort. McG seems to kind of get terminator: how it's supposed to look, how the Future war works, the easy and obvious stuff so the movie can look right. But he don't get the deeper themes so it will probably still be a big mess.
-
So is the squid in? Is it?
-
You know, the Friday the 13th remake trailer story. I took precious time out of my day to post in that now vanished talkback! Gone! Gone into the digital graveyard! Information in the Internet Age is but a fleeting vapor! Gird your loins!
-
the design work on Compass was splendid and very steampunk in many ways, and a similar take would work great with the Nautilus/19th century stuff.
Not sure about McGee tho... -
To wash my dirty balls.
-
I'm getting into the groove on this.
-
Well, this is an unpleasant surprise.
-
All that work McG has done to build credibility with fans about Terminator... and then... THIS? Seriously? A theme park ride masquerading as a film?
-
He;s buds with one of the writers. Chatroom. And Derek acted in his Prolife film.
Mori was getting all up in arms over the recent horror remakes and then he says but this one will be good. There are some purist F13 fans out there. I was not a fan of F13th gthe reamke because it would lead to a aNOES remake and it has... Oh well have to look at these character like the universal monsters. Universal did em righ thammer films came in and did em ok and then they were slutted out and abused. The first impression is the best 9 times out of 10. -
I'll be sure to skip this adaptation. McG.... Jesus Christ....
-
damn darkness.
-
damn darkness.
-
And there is no article for this why?
-
I used to watch the original multiple times a day, so much so that my mother grew to hate it, as I didn't know how to operate the VCR, and demanded she put it on incessantly. James Mason, Kirk Douglas, and the incomparable Peter Lorre are outstanding, and the giant squid sequence was a groundbreaking effect at the time it was released.
-
Goddamit, McG has no vision, no substance, nothing special other than the ability to deliver decent tv pilots and sail the waters of the entertainment industry. He is not a geek - he's a former soul patch wearing jock rock douche who wants in on all the geek money that's out there. His Terminator 4 trailer should've easily induced chills, when all it has induced is "looks workmanlike and blah". For the sake of fuck studio heads keep him away from all this treasure.
-
I can hardly wait. Yay.
-
Come on, Big Frank, we know you can do it! Show 'em what ya got!
-
Terry Gilliam
-
Jim Cameron
-
Something less of a functional retard
-
Sam Raimi

when I was a kid, probably wore 3 or 4 paperback copies of the book. Anyways it wasn't until years later that I realized nemo was Hindu, I just figured him for a pissed off Brit.I'm not opposed to a decent remake of this, just don't have confidence in MCG YET! Hope he proves me wrong in Terminator:Salvation, hell I hope every bad directior proves me wrong, I still hold out hope that Paul WS Anderson has a masterpiece waiting for him...or Uwe Boll is going to create the next Citizen Kaneworthless thinking maybe but still...

Someone who knows about Steampunk. -
So what does McG do exactly on those shows to earn his Executive Producer credit? Is he the driving force, or just getting paid to attach his name and the other crew manage to cover up his apparent ineptitude?
-
I would love a proper movie made from the book, but it would make $123.23 at the box office. A movie loyal to the book would more resemble an episode of "Blue Planet" than an action movie.
-
... especially with a great steampunk aesthetic. I don't know what the point would be if they do decide to update it an set the story in modern times, but I guess we'll see.
-
The same way he claims to have gotten Cameron's blessing for T4?
-
you actually meant the "Nautilus." Just not your day, is it?
-
blah blah
-
If ever there was an entry to drop the fucking exclamation points, this is it.
-
Nice work man! This will work if they thoroughly 'Steampunk' it. After all Verne and Wells almost invented it... of sorts... But the Disney version is so good!
-
If he starts making great movies, maybe he will have earned the irritating, self-righteous "McG" moniker.
-
We will all love this movie now.
-
Fuck McG.

McG? So it will be an R-Rated bloodbath of epic proportions...
by motoko kusanagi
...just like T4, right?McG my ass.
-
Now there's a remake that's needed! Dig up Richard Baseheart and we've got a movie!
-
It's based on the book. Verne wrote a sequel to it, by the way: "Mysterious Island".
I don't think McG deserve the hate you guys are dishing out, except for his name. Focus your ire on that. As far as movies go, so far, it seems like he's made each movie exactly the way they should be made. Nothing he's done so far proves that he _can_ or _can't_ make a decent serious action flick. He won't measure up to Cameron, obviously, but who does? -
LEAVE GOOD MOVIES ALONE. RE-MAKE MEDIOCRE ONES. OBIVOUSLY YOU OWN THE FUCKING RIGHTS TO THE ORIGINAL, WHICH, IF YOU ARE RE-MAKING IT, IS A CLASSIC. RE-RELEASE THE FUCKER INSTEAD OF WASTING BOTH TIME AND MONEY! HOLLYWOOD MINDS ARE THE EQUIVALENT OF THE SWILL ON THE BOTTOM OF PETER LORE'S P-COAT!
-
uwe boll is prnounced oova bowl.
-
McGentlemen horrible.
-
It is simply unfilmable, and a tad dated.
-
Disney will finally bring back the 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea ride at Disney World?
-
But Jules Vern is actually rolling in his coffin. This is going to be awesomly crap.
-
Can't people in Hollywood come up with new ideas anymore ??
So when are they going to remake Citizen Kane ?? -
and the title is "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo" No, yes, I know, they'll probably end up dropping the "Captain Nemo" part and just turn it into a remake or remimagining, BUT, imagine if this project was indeed an origin story...and one connected to the first film. That would be badass. Captain Nemo has always had an interesting background, and that alone could make a good film. Plus, we could see the Nautilus modal again! It is being produced by the TR2N people, so you never know. Perhaps it is connected to the older film. If it's a remake...then fuck it.
-
"oceanic menace" != "crime"
-
Hrithik Roshan honkeys
-
That should keep the dateless fan boys upset over the Watchmen movie happy. There's your fucking squid!
-
It was called The Black Hole.
-
I could never understand why they closed that ride but after thinking about it, I remembered that the seats were really small and the submarine itself was very cramped. I think people got too fat to fit in the thing. There was probably an incident that involved the jaws of life so they just said Fuck It.I liked Charlie's Angels too. Could have used a little girl on girl action. Interesting trivia about that film, the circular house that overlooks the Hills in LA that belonged to Sam Rockwell's character was also Tim Allen's house in Galaxy Quest, also starring Rockwell. Okay, maybe not that interesting.
-
Same league. All visuals, zero substance.
-
secretly admire We Are Marshall, and want to give McG more work than, God knows, he deserves. The same group that admires Ratner's The Family Man...
-
Was filled in with concrete long ago. The version at Disneyland Anaheim has been rethemed to Finding Nemo, but there's still a Leagues ride at Tokyo DisneySea, and the Disneyland Paris park has a Nautilus submarine walkthrough attraction.
-
Hard! Seriously, Disney needs to stop ruining the classic rides by replacing them with half-assed modern updates. The original 20,000 Leagues is also just fine thanks. (I hate to sound a million years old but as a Disney Park pass holder, nothing drives me crazier than seeing the classic stuff converted to modern bastardized versions. No more remakes, and get off my lawn.)
-
...it should be fine, I think. Disney rarely screws up their films. and 20,000 is a true movie classic that even heavily influenced "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (see Indy being chased by natives and Indy riding Nazi sub to to island scenes).
-
Agreed. Disney parks has committed some atrocities to their classic rides. As much as I remember digging the 20,000 leagues ride, though, I also think back that its ideas were antiquated in this scientifically modern time, such as the giant killer squid attacking the sub, the dragon, and the mermaids, all which might leave a bad impression on young minds. Maybe with the new movie, they'll convert that huge lagoon back to a more scientifically accurate or maybe more fantastic sub voyage. I think the biggest atrocity the park has committed was replacing the singing Tiki birds and flowers show with a rapping Iago parrot. Although, granted, kids with ADD probably couldn't sit through the old show without screaming for Dumbo....
-
Stop the madness hire a real director :(
-
Keannu Reeves as Nemo. Search your feelings...you know this to be the truth...
-
Cheers!
-
oh wait - wrong nemo
-
They should hang a huge picture of WALT in front of this McG during filming...so he knows the shit will hit the fan if he fucks it up. And, I agree with everyone above...Please..No Captain Jack Nemo type characters...one is plenty.
-
Is coming BACK to Disney World...after they just did a $200 Million dollar renovation, turning it into a 'Finding Nemo' ride?
Nah...this new version will sink like a rock at the box office. Unless Mc puts Cameron Diaz in her undies again and let's her beat the squid to death with her ass. -
If you read the article, there's a lot of emphasis on McG's deal, not so much about the movie.
-
Why don't they do trailers like that anymore? With the sensationalized titles and narrator?
-
Herc, your stories are always so boring to read, because there's no personality to your posts (unless Whedon is involved). What separates AICN from other entertainment sites is the passion that the staff shows for movies.
-
Also, fuck origin stories. Takes the fun and mystery right out of it. I'm more a fan of the book than the original Disney film, but still I can't see anyone in today's Hollywood with the gravitas to do Nemo like James Mason did.
-
Next he's gonna want Herc to post updates on the status of his Facebook page and then drop a line whenever he's mentioned somewhere.

No Charlies Angels 2 was a M.P.O.F.S. first was adequate
by stormwatcher
and midly entertaining. Anything with Murray is worth a day pass.
-
someone needs to make a serious 20,000 leagues film, not some action film or whatever. There are some interesting themes explored in it that most adaptations seem to gloss over.
-
Mysterious Island and Tales of the Castaways were both related (albeit vaguely in the cast of the latter) to the same literary world. I'm sorry thought about this choice of directors. I hope this isn't a wacky CG fest and instead goes for something more classical. Ha, what a dope I am, or course they won't!
-
It's a masterpiece.
-
I reserve hate on McG until T4 is out. This could be very cool. Anything will be better than that tv movie with Jose Ferrer in the late 70's.
-
C'mon!, Charlie's Angels were awful, I've seen Scooby Doo cartoons with more logic.
-
Glad Zach did not film this because . . . um you know NO SQUID!!!
-
...Michael Schenker's great instrumental "Captain Nemo" for the theme song.
-
They took out the one at Walt Disney World. Maybe this movie will cause them to put in a new one back in.
-
Anyone remember at some point, Christophe "Brotherhood of the Wolf" Gans was going to direct and did a screenplay ? In it, Nemo is a terrorist out to destroy the world, I guess we will get the Disney lite version.
-
All flash & trash; the tool is this generation's Peter Fonda...maybe this generation's Bert I. Gordon. James Mason was a flawless Nemo (20,000 LEAGUES) but Herbert Lom's invocation (MYSTERIOUS ISLAND) was equally brooding & kick-ass.
