McG To Direct Disney’s 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA Remake!!

Published at:  Jan 07, 2009 1:25:57 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Captain Nemo, unbowed by his misadventures with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, is a solo act again.

McG (“Terminator: Salvation”) will direct Disney’s remake of “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea” from a screenplay by Bill Marsilii (“Déjà vu”).

It’s based on the 1870 Jules Verne novel about an angry European-educated 19th century Hindu prince who fights oceanic menace with a fancy submarine.

Harry says I should start offering opinions when I post something about film, so here goes. I loved McG's first "Charlie's Angels" with Bill Murray and Cameron Diaz' swirling ass. It was funny and cool and very pure cinema in my opinion, so I'm looking forward to this and "Terminator Salvation" and anything else at which the man cares to make a run.

Find all of Variety’s story on the matter here.

Why is this article in the teevee section? Is the new 20,000 made for television? I'm curious to see how McG's Terminator turns out, so I'll wait before making any blanket statement on the quality of this project. (And by "curious", I mean, I am curious about what other people will say, because I'm not seeing his Terminator. I saw 1 and 2; that was enough.)

    Mc G and directing

    by welsh_bullfrog_goon

As a director i think MC G is well out of his depth with the terminator franchise only a director such as David Fincher has the experience of creating a dark forboding sci fi thriller which continues from the previous cameron films, so captain nemo may very well match his creative depth. Don't get me wrong salvation looks great, i just think the script will suffer and we know with the ambiguity surrounding the rating it will probably be pg13/12a (12a uk rating) that could affect it too , i think T4 has trouble tarnished all over it's name, i just hope i'm proven as i love the cameron films

    Let's hope that

    by greenstyle92

all the quasi-intentional homo-erotic subtext of the original novel, (what with 3 grown men continually stripping and unstripping and grappling and such) makes it into the movie, so that modern audiences can either champion it or villify it or laugh at it while misunderstanding how gay sex worked in the old days. (in the old days, Having sex with either your best guy friend or a nubile young male cabin boy was something you did either before you got married to your wife or while on a suitably long sea voyage. You just weren't supposed to talk about it-either to champion it or condemn it. Don't Ask, Don't tell, and all that.)

The McG love comes from renewed hope in the man after the new Terminator trailer, which doesn't look as sucky as anticipated. Here's the thing about that: That will be like a midling effort. McG seems to kind of get terminator: how it's supposed to look, how the Future war works, the easy and obvious stuff so the movie can look right. But he don't get the deeper themes so it will probably still be a big mess.

I used to watch the original multiple times a day, so much so that my mother grew to hate it, as I didn't know how to operate the VCR, and demanded she put it on incessantly. I don't think McG deserve the hate you guys are dishing out, except for his name. Focus your ire on that. As far as movies go, so far, it seems like he's made each movie exactly the way they should be made. Nothing he's done so far proves that he _can_ or _can't_ make a decent serious action flick. He won't measure up to Cameron, obviously, but who does?

and the title is "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo" No, yes, I know, they'll probably end up dropping the "Captain Nemo" part and just turn it into a remake or remimagining, BUT, imagine if this project was indeed an origin story...and one connected to the first film. That would be badass. Captain Nemo has always had an interesting background, and that alone could make a good film. Plus, we could see the Nautilus modal again! It is being produced by the TR2N people, so you never know. Perhaps it is connected to the older film. If it's a remake...then fuck it.

I think people got too fat to fit in the thing. There was probably an incident that involved the jaws of life so they just said Fuck It.I liked Charlie's Angels too. Could have used a little girl on girl action. Interesting trivia about that film, the circular house that overlooks the Hills in LA that belonged to Sam Rockwell's character was also Tim Allen's house in Galaxy Quest, also starring Rockwell. Finding Nemo ride SUCKS!!!

    by frank black

Hard! Seriously, Disney needs to stop ruining the classic rides by replacing them with half-assed modern updates. The original 20,000 Leagues is also just fine thanks. (I hate to sound a million years old but as a Disney Park pass holder, nothing drives me crazier than seeing the classic stuff converted to modern bastardized versions. No more remakes, and get off my lawn.)

As long as they don't make it a comedy a la "Pirates"..

    by chishu_ryu

...it should be fine, I think. Disney rarely screws up their films. and 20,000 is a true movie classic that even heavily influenced "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (see Indy being chased by natives and Indy riding Nazi sub to to island scenes).

Agreed. Disney parks has committed some atrocities to their classic rides. As much as I remember digging the 20,000 leagues ride, though, I also think back that its ideas were antiquated in this scientifically modern time, such as the giant killer squid attacking the sub, the dragon, and the mermaids, all which might leave a bad impression on young minds. Maybe with the new movie, they'll convert that huge lagoon back to a more scientifically accurate or maybe more fantastic sub voyage. I think the biggest atrocity the park has committed was replacing the singing Tiki birds and flowers show with a rapping Iago parrot. Although, granted, kids with ADD probably couldn't sit through the old show without screaming for Dumbo....

They should hang a huge picture of WALT in front of this McG during filming...so he knows the shit will hit the fan if he fucks it up. And, I agree with everyone above...Please..No Captain Jack Nemo type characters...one is plenty.

Does this mean the Nautilis Sub Ride

    by cheif brody

Is coming BACK to Disney World...after they just did a $200 Million dollar renovation, turning it into a 'Finding Nemo' ride?
Nah...this new version will sink like a rock at the box office. Unless Mc puts Cameron Diaz in her undies again and let's her beat the squid to death with her ass.

If you read the article, there's a lot of emphasis on McG's deal, not so much about the movie.

Herc, your stories are always so boring to read, because there's no personality to your posts (unless Whedon is involved). What separates AICN from other entertainment sites is the passion that the staff shows for movies.

    Fuck McG.

    by tin snoman

Also, fuck origin stories. Takes the fun and mystery right out of it. I'm more a fan of the book than the original Disney film, but still I can't see anyone in today's Hollywood with the gravitas to do Nemo like James Mason did.

give 20,000 leagues a serious treatment

    by landwaster

someone needs to make a serious 20,000 leagues film, not some action film or whatever. There are some interesting themes explored in it that most adaptations seem to gloss over.

Naveen Andrews for Nemo. And make a Vern trilogy!

    by drath

Mysterious Island and Tales of the Castaways were both related (albeit vaguely in the cast of the latter) to the same literary world. I'm sorry thought about this choice of directors. I hope this isn't a wacky CG fest and instead goes for something more classical. Ha, what a dope I am, or course they won't!

Screenplay by Christophe "Silent Hill" Gans

    by theplant

Anyone remember at some point, Christophe "Brotherhood of the Wolf" Gans was going to direct and did a screenplay ? In it, Nemo is a terrorist out to destroy the world, I guess we will get the Disney lite version.

    McG hate right here.

    by thegreatwhatzit

All flash & trash; the tool is this generation's Peter Fonda...maybe this generation's Bert I. Gordon. James Mason was a flawless Nemo (20,000 LEAGUES) but Herbert Lom's invocation (MYSTERIOUS ISLAND) was equally brooding & kick-ass.
