FRIGHT NIGHT Remake Gets Staked!

Beaks here...

Though Screen Gems' planned remake of FRIGHT NIGHT was to have as much to do with Tom Holland's original as "quality" has to do with "J.S. Cardone", it is nonetheless a tremendous relief to know that one of the best horror films of the '80s will not be footnoted by a Clint Culpepper PG-13 special. If only the same could be said of THE STEPFATHER. As ShockTilYouDrop's Ryan Rotten reminds us, the Screen Gems redo of FRIGHT NIGHT more closely resembled Tobe Hooper's THE FUNHOUSE in concept (which raised the question, "Why not just remake THE FUNHOUSE?"). Now that Holland's classic is safe, it appears that Culpepper and Co. have targeted another '80s horror fave - one that, thankfully, wasn't any good in the first place. To learn more, check out Rotten's story. And for future reference: do not fuck with Peter Vincent.

I do not see the need for a remake of something that does not need it.<p> Jesus, is this what Hollywood is coming to? Cash Grab remakes?<p> OK, a vampire velociraptor set in 80's New York that turns people into Zombies. The creature's only weakness is Sam Neill blowing a plastic raptor whistle in the tune of Amazing Grace.<p> There, something original.

Okay maybe that last part wasn't original

    by ChittyChittyGangBang

    by ironic_name

Christopher Mintz-Plasse learned his acting directing debut remake dubbed 'lnt green' was being remade by tim story and starring paul rudd after finding them in his studio filming scenes for 'the green' <P> rudd said: "we saw the first 20 seconds of [Mintz-Plasse's] dailies and wanted to update this classic while giving it a modern feel" <P> simon pegg's parody 'soylent graeme' is not being affected. nor is 'green movie' which is just sarah palin impersonations by the cast of madtv and a midget as bella in twilight.

I Didn't Understand Why They Tried

    by DeeJay

This was a series that was ripe for a 3rd installment (with Brewster playing more of a supporting character of a father and family man). The first two movies did a good job of re-interpreting some of the traditional "rules" of being a vampire, and there are about 100 modern screenwriters who could've had a field day building on the foundation already established. I didn't "get" why they were remaking it to begin with (and wondered if doing so was based on some flawed calculations of potential box office).

  • Jan. 6, 2009, 4:39 p.m. CST

    by spud mcspud

That remake may just have been the one that got my ass over to Hollywood, with a bitter vengeful soul and a baleful glare that said to those who saw it, I am going to beat the exec who greenlit this to death with Stephen Geoffreys. Yep, the actual actor. And it would have hurt. A LOT.<P> Bastard studio executives. You are the soulless whore that fucks the originality straight out of this business. You turn magic into vomit. You turn dreams into horseshit. And come the revolution, guess who's first up against the wall ready to be smushed to a crimson pulp by giant robots?<P> Oh yeah. Vengeance will be sweet -- and full of carbs...

    by spud mcspud

Fucking ridiculous idea in the first place. Ditto NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET - fucking WHY?!?!? If you're going to remake ANYTHING, remake A SHIT MOVIE! I can live without a FRIGHT NIGHT remake, thanks, but JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES? Make it JOHN STEAKLEY'S VAMPIRE$ and get it RIGHT this time. Leave ELM ST alone - but SHOCKER is right up there for a new version!<P> Fucking execs...

  • Jan. 6, 2009, 4:47 p.m. CST

    by spud mcspud

Liking your FRIGHT NIGHT 3 ideas - why haven't they made it yet? You DO need Brewster, maybe as an over-protective Dad, whose virginal daugher is dating some morally dubious mechanic or whatever, and the two of them get involved in suspecting-neighbour-of-vampirism shenanigans, and dear old vamp-phobic-until-Act-III Dad comes in and becomes Peter Vincent. Bring back Evil Ed if you can - and DEFINITELY have some backstory where Chris Sarandon's family have always been persecuted by Brewster's ancestors, hence a grudge!<P> There. Write that shit and kick me back some points of the back end. Oh, and Megan Fox for virginal daughter, please...

  • Jan. 6, 2009, 4:59 p.m. CST

    Dumb, dumb idea...

    by Sparhawk38

I loved the orig. But it is a combination of things that made it so great...none of which you can actually plan on. It was a good confluence of material, actors and visuals. It could have been so much less,...why prove that with a remake?!

Is it similar in quality, reinventing the vampire thing? I really hate gay vampires although I did like the first 3 books of Ann Rice (as I hang my head in shame) is 30 DAYS OF NIGHT worthwhile? I like Horror not gore, the Thing and Session 9 are about my favorite horror movies to give some insight....okay there was some gore in the Thing.

Comission a script, any script, remake or reimagining who gives a fuck. Then give the same script to 3 different directors and they can make it in 3 different styles. <p> Voila, 2 remakes of the same script in the same year. In fact, play them as a fucking triple bill for all the retards who love that shit and leave the rest of the year free for real movies.

    Fright Night RULES!!!

    by Violator90

THANK THE GEEKDOM GODS! FRIGHT NIGHT is one of the best horror movies that came out of the 80's! There is no way you can even come close to what the original! The sequal wasn't that great but it still had the spirit of the original. I'm so damn sick and tired of all the fucked up remakes! Remakes DON'T WORK! Especially on movies that are already good! Remake shitty movies. There are millions of shitty movies that need the rehash treatment. FUCK YOU HOLLYWEIRD! AND FUCK YOU STUDIO EXECS! Hope you all get raped with a cattle prod!

    No Roddy McDowell remakes EVER!

    by deadboy1313

Didn't Hollywood learn anything from the Planet of the Apes "reimagining"? The reason it failed miserably was that Roddy McDowell cannot be replaced by any other actor on Earth. He was the reason the movies were successful. And with Fright Night, Peter Vincent was the glue that held it together. Instead of bad remakes of classic films, why doesn't someone have the bright idea of releasing Arnold on DVD. There is a film I'd love to see again. If you're going to do remakes, don't do remakes of classic movies that were great and then ruin them. Remake movies that had a good idea, but were horribly cast and produced in the first place. You can't improve on a classic, but maybe you can salvage something that was imperfect to begin with.

    by Darth Macchio

"You have to have FAITH...for that to work on ME...Mr. VinCENT!"<p>Oh holy shit but do I love me some Fright Night. How hot was Amanda Bearss in tha Vamp getup at the end? Made watching those old Married w/Children eps interesting (and yes, I know she's a lesbian now..why you gotta fuck with the fantasy man?). And Chris Sarandon deserves his place next to the absolute cult-favorite greats like Bruce Campbell, The Walken, Bill Shatner, etc...<p>Oh and for the remake crew ideas above: Zombie's Halloween is getting a sequel and Zombie's doing it (this was already posted on AICN a week ago I believe). Nightmare on Elm Street is already slated for a remake (and no Englund's not doing Freddy tho hasn't ruled out a cameo). As much as I'd like to think the dropping of Near Dark and Fright Night remakes, you know this is only a delay...these shit is inevitable people. Just 2 more years we'll start remakes of the 90's remakes...Rollerball, 13 Ghosts...well, I think you see where this is going...

  • Jan. 7, 2009, 10:08 a.m. CST

    Hell, they already remade this...

    by Blue_Demon

It's called "Never Cry Werewolf." Read the synopsis on IMDB. Some teenager (a girl this time) believes a werewolf has moved in next door and gets a washed up tv personality to help her out. Sounds familiar, no?<p>All they did was switch the lead character's sex and the moster from vampire to werewolf.

    by Darth Macchio

Lesbians don't want anything to do with us sexually and I believe there is great risk in watching, in person, 2 girls getting it on without being able to participate.<p>It could potentially damage the family jewels beyond repair.<p>Now, if she had gone bi..well, that's a whole other story now isn't it?

  • Jan. 7, 2009, 11:14 a.m. CST

Also note the great original score by Fiedel...

    by Darth Macchio

..but I'm sure the Fright Night remake would get either some horrid bad nu-metal or pop-metal garbage or a Beyonce sung theme song as she would take the role of Amy in the remake. And you just KNOW that Shia is a PERFECT fit for Evil Ed (or maybe Kumar). Shit, now that I think about it...this Fright Night remake would be tits! Get Shia for EvilEd (either that or Anthony Anderson screamaing the whole time), Beyonce for Amy, Nikc Nolte for Peter Vincent (come on, you know that would be totally fucking awesome), Sam Worthington for Billy (because he has to be cast in any new films for at least another 18 months), that guy from the teenie bopper vampire flick as Brewster (he can keep the accent, this is the batshit version mind you) and for Dandridge, I'm thinking Jeremy Piven? Sure, he's little but you know he'd give the role some of that old school Sarandon gravitas.<p>Hollywood? Make it so.<p>.<p>And here's a trivia question for you Fright Night fans: What band did the original "Fright Night" theme song played at the end of the first movie?

  • Jan. 7, 2009, 1:34 p.m. CST

Blue_Demon is right! This was remade!

    by Lang The Cat

I saw "Never Cry Werewolf" it had Kevin Sorbo in the Roddy McDowell role (as an American Crocodile Hunter). The stupid idiots clearly stole the story and made minor changes to avoid copyright lawsuits and did nothing original and copied scenes from the original film quite badly.<br> Tom Holland should sue, except this was direct to video (and from there to the Sci-Fi Channel), so there clearly is no money. Still having some douchebag steal the credit for Mr. Holland's work sucks. I notice IMDB no longer lists the name of the douchebag who stole the story.

    by Blue_Demon

I doubt a lawsuit would get anywhere. Remember "Chaos?" It's "Last House on The Left" even down to it's tag line. Also, I read that the reason the "Last House" people don't sue is because "Last House" is "The Virgin Spring" set in modern times.<p>Buncha copycats, I tell ya!

    by thegreatwhatzit

It was undiluted stink-o-rama. Linda Blair, attending the Washington, D.C. premiere, had to feel a bit humiliated (the audience was doing the MST3K thing). When the film mercifully ended, the house lights focused on Ms. Blair; her seat was empty. Yeah, this classic deserves a remake. But, this time around, include a hula dancing competition for some diversion (filler). Tools.

The song was indeed done by the J. Geils Band. Altho I still never learned for sure who actually was J. Geiles (suppsedly it was the guitarist).<p>The song is quite catchy too..I haven't watched FN for quite a while but hear the song perfectly in my head (probably cuz I've seen FN about a million times!).<p>Oh Brewster!!! You're SOOO cool!! Yehahahahahah!! Hahahah!!!
