Nordling And Capone’s Favorite Documentary of 2008, DEAR ZACHARY, Hits MSNBC On The First Sunday Of 2009!!

Published at:  Jan 03, 2009 2:50:06 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

I’m avoiding reading reviews on “Dear Zachary,” but at least two things will compel me to tune in Sunday night:

1) The documentary pulls a 100% favorable rating among “top critics” over at Rotten Tomatoes.

2) AICN’s "Nordling" and "Capone" both picked it as the year’s best documentary over “Man On Wire.”

The trailer:

It hit cinemas just two months ago, and it arrives on MSNBC Sunday at 11 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT. The good news it’s on a basic cable channel to which a lot of households have access. The bad news is there’d be little chance of it being pre-empted by Gaza War coverage were it airing on IFC.

FORK CNBC EUROPE UP ITS STUPID ASS! They seriously stopped airing Conan O'Brien this year! They don't even show it on weekends anymore, like they did before they began to air it from monday to friday a few months ago! I need my daily dose of Conan because there isn't anything better to watch in Germany at night!(And his show makes me seriously laugh hard.)
Well, at least they still show The Tonight Show, which means that I probably get Conan back when he takes over, but I don't know, I got the sneaking suspicion that the heads of CNBC find Jay funnier than Conan and will give up on the Tonight show, as soon as Conan takes over.

Dude Should Have Followed The Leykis Rules

    by mjgtexas

    Especially this one:
Regardless of the situation always use birth control.

Whoever uses the birth control has the control.

You should be using birth control AND so should she. The pill is NOT the only form. There's about 12 different forms of birth control , they can't be allergic to all of them. If a girl is not on birth control, she wants to have a baby. Maybe not right away, maybe not with you, but if it happens she won't be too upset.

Do not, under any circumstances, stick it in without a condom. Even if she says she's on the pill. You don't know if she's tell the truth, or missed a dose, or simply forgot. You just don't know. Don't take her word for it and protect yourself.

If a women doesn't believe in abortion and doesn't believe in birth control that equals someone who wants to have baby.

Remember, 60 minutes of irritation is better much better then 18 years of child support.

FWIW - Newfoundlanders were OUTRAGED at this case.

    by donnadarko

I still have family in the Atlantic Provinces, and the anger (and cultural embarrassment) regarding this case has not subsided. The majority of Canadians think American criminals should have their asses kicked back across the border (see also: Ng, Charles), unless the crime was committed in Canada, or against a Canadian citizen. That HORRID woman should have been in an American court within days of being caught in Newfoundland.

But judging all of Newfoundland (or Canada for that matter) on the inexcusable behavior of the Newfoundland court system would be like hating NYC because some of the NYPD are violent shitheads. Newfoundlanders are good people, and this case will resonant with them long after most of you have forgotten this documentary.

    Good Lord

    by fathermcgruderkicksassforthelord

Mattyboy up above referenced a sledgehammer to the chest, and that's pretty accurate.

In Moriarty's old review, he mentioned how he overlooked technical flaws in the film in favor of just letting the admittedly subjective story sink in, and I think that's probably the best way to handle it.

NOT a movie to watch for "entertainment" (as per Reno's comment), I would recommend this to anyone looking to be simultaneously informed and enraged and saddened - if you can handle that, or, in the case of some people whose opinions I see bounced around here, if you're actually capable of empathy and emotions as humans feel and express them.

I thought the movie did a decent job of illustrating, via interviews with the folks in Newfoundland that the Bagbys connected with, that the community was very much aware and supportive.

I don't think anyone is hating on Newfoundlanders, or at least I'm not.

    by donnadarko

I read a few reviews linked via the DearZachary dot com website, and there's a bit of chat on various FaceBook pages this morning - as always, there's a handful of people who are using anything negative about Canada ("Those fucking Commies to the north.") as an excuse to bash the fuck out of it.

It's uncalled for, and unfair. I mean, Canadian tax dollars PAID for this nightmare to happen. Canadians are outraged! Most of you are just hearing about this case, while Shirley Turner has been on the Canadian cultural radar since 2003! This case reached the highest levels of government - it was not buried. Should another murderer decide to hide in Canada to take advantage of the legal system, Zachary's murder WILL be remembered.

What's tragic - as if anything in this case can be moreso - is Andrew's parents approached the Canadian court system the wrong way. That's not their fault - somebody should have counseled them. The dad is so headstrong regarding bail reform - and of course we can empathize why; but he should have concentrated on child welfare. NOT the fact that Shirley was allowed bail, but that the child was endangered BECAUSE OF IT. It could have moved the case to a family court - a different judge - and that could have changed everything.

Chat with the director and someone brought up another messed up case in Canada. Wikipedia: Karla Homolka, that is some messed up shit. As for Zachary, was it me or did it seem that Newfoundland just wasn't used to something this messed up that they were just people that hoped for the best in people? Though all those accounts about how crazy she was that went overlooked was messed up.

    Series7 - there's truth to that.

    by donnadarko

Re: believing that people will "do the right thing". Sadly, the thing we are most proud of - our tolerance - has a dark side. Serial killers - and Canada has had it's despicable share - have been able to function for far longer than they should have been able to, because they were given far too many chances while they were young.

There's also a type of 'reverse sexism' in play - that all women must be victims. It's what helped Shirley Turner; and it's why Karla Homolka didn't go to jail for life. As a woman - and yes, as a feminist - this is horrifying. Women may have different motivations regarding murder - but their punishment should be just as severe.

For those unfamiliar with the case - Karla Homolka was the female half of a murder/rape team. Her own SISTER was one of the victims. She served 12 years and is currently living with her son in freedom.

To bring this post somewhat back on topic for a media website...have you ever watched a Canadian series called Davinci's Inquest? The Sleuth Channel has picked it up. Many of Canada's criminal cases were a part of the show - and there's no halo over the court system's head.

At the risk of a redundant post I just feel like I had to post something SOMEWHERE after watching this film. Without a doubt was this one of the most moving, emotional pieces of film I have ever seen. I was bleary eyed ten minutes in and absolutely balling by the end. I am glad I did not know what was coming or I may not have watched, as I have a little cherub of a daughter the same age as little Zachary and It was so devestating to see. This doc is a roller coaster of emotions down and up and would not classify it as a downer but truly a wide swath of powerful, overwhelming human emotion.

    What is Hollywood thinking?

    by tophat

Do the studios and film-makers really expect people to find and watch these movies on other cable channels other than HBO, Cinemax, etc.? I mean, I still haven't seen GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, and the reason is its only aired once (to my knowledge) on some random night on CBS. LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA only aired on AMC. And pretty much every documentary that's gotten praise over the last five or ten years has aired on other channels on random nights. The reason why a lot of movies from the eighties and nineties are still quoted and remembered by my generation, even if those movies didn't do very well in their initial runs, is because they aired on HBO and Cinemax five of six times a week. Not because they magically appeared on some random cable station one night and then was never aired again. HBO, IFC, Sundance, get off your asses and get these films!
