Wolverine shouts HAPPY NEW YEAR from the Bath Tub! Check exclusive high-res still here!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with an exclusive flick from the upcoming Wolverine flick, courtesy of the folks over at Entertainment Weekly (specifically the lovely Esther Chan) who have compiled their most anticipated of 2009 issue, which hits news stands tomorrow, I believe. I'm finding it difficult to get excited for this movie, even though I love Hugh Jackman as Logan. Even in Ratner's limp and fatally flawed X3 Jackman was good as Wolverine. This movie has been plagued by trouble. We've had reports of set troubles, huge rows between Gavin Hood and the studio and even reports of Hood being replaced for extended periods of shooting. These rumors have been roundly denied by the studio and producers, but are they going to say? "Yes, this $100 million tent pole movie is in trouble." I don't think so. If it was one isolated report or rumor then we could ignore it as bullshit, but there have been many off-the-record reports from people working in, on and around the production. Make no mistake, whatever the end result is WOLVERINE was a very troubled production. I missed the trailer premiere at Comic-Con for an interview, but I did track it down online... maybe you had to be there. I just wasn't blown away and I'm still hoping the official release trailer knocks my socks off, but after hearing first-hand reports on how Rothman views the fanbase, comments he made during the production of X3, I can tell you if it is good it'll be a lucky fluke. The dude doesn't give two-fucks about us (the exact quote from Rothman when confronted about a decision that would upset the fans was "Fuck the fans. We already have their money.") and if he doesn't give a fuck about the people that drive the buzz and excitement for a popular property, why would he care about the quality of the content? So, all that is to say... I don't know about the movie, but I hope Jackman can save it on pure charisma and enthusiasm alone. I do like the below picture, just wish it was for a movie I could have more faith in. Click for the high-res version!

A nice trailer with flashy imagery and effects ... and a terrible story with bad directing and worse acting.

Weren't the first two X-Men films Wolverine films?

    by I Dunno

He was pretty much the main character in the first one, half of the plot of the second one was finding out about his origins. What more do we need? I actually thought it was cool that there was some mystery. We got the feeling that he might have been a murderous bad guy before his memory was wiped. Of course all that will change when they give an excruciatingly detailed account of his early years,
But what am I saying, no character has ever been ruined by explicitly explaining their back story. Not one.

    by The Tao of Joe

Let's show him how far his comic book franchises can go once he decides to brick on his fanbase. I was going to play 'wait and see' because I do love me some Jackman Wolverine, but fuck it. The trailer was awful, this picture is awful, and everything I've heard about from the shoot makes it look like a nightmare train headed down the track.

Alright, true believers (and disgruntled 'Watchmen' fans), I am going to the gauntlet here and offer $10 bucks to the person who takes this shitty publicity image and alters it so that it looks worse, hilarious, or indicative of the crap only 20th Century Fox can be responsible for these days. It's not just the quote. It's Fox's policies towards their creative talent, plus their desire to take every great comic book or fanboy property they can get their inept fingers on and churn out movies that are ho-hum at best, but completely unbearable for most of the time. X-Men 3, FF, AVP, and now this. Plus these bastards have the audacity to try and put their flaccid dicks up the ass of WB's Watchmen movie. Enough's enough. I'm not taking any more crap from this guy.

i mean his arms are perfectly placed so that he can have them over the shoulders of two gay bears, or gay superheros (say, north star and the male wonder twin, etc) then just add the top of another guys back of head poking out of the water in front of wolvie, and you are done.

  • Jan. 1, 2009, 10:11 a.m. CST

what a waste of a movie...

    by HotShott

Think about how awesome the Wolvie story in Japan could have been in the right hands. Claws, ninjas and hot Jap chicks = awesomeness. Instead we're getting some half-baked version of the Weapon X story? The BWS story was perfect and brutal. This will not be. I love Jackman as Wolverine. But why the hell can they not seem to get Sabertooth right? Tyler Mane as a mute imbecile was just wrong. If anything he should have kept the pro-wrestler bravado? And now Liev is just ALL kinds of pussified.

What I'd really like to hear is what he says every day behind closed doors about AICN and the war that has seemingly begun right here on these talkbacks. I'm sure he brushes it off like he can crush us, etc, and maybe he's right, because in the end, no matter how many of us actually don't go see it, it will still make money. Lots of people will see this, unfortunately. I mean, chances are it won't be worse than Fantastic Four: Sequel, and the bewildered herds still showed up in droves. Maybe the fucker is right, but still, he has to be a little pissed that Harry's personal vendetta against specifically him is actually enraging some of us. You know he has some piss-ant assistant who updates us every time his name is mentioned in a story.

I will only see watchmen because even if watchmen is a failure fox will lose nothing so they don't really have it bad, i will see watchmen even if fox take over for the talent that was involved and so that they can still make movies like these but under other studios. NOT A FUCKING MOVIE IN THEATERS OR DVD/BLU...

Wow what a asshole!, i mean i'm not nieve so i know that most executives and producers probably act and feel the same as Rothman but most dare not say it meaning that people like me can still live in hope that MAYBE they do actually care about what they are making even if it does mean i'm living in denial. I loved X-MEN 2 but i will not be seeing this because of Rothmans dumbass comments, even if this is one of the best films of the year!.

  • Jan. 1, 2009, 11:40 a.m. CST

    See here's the thing...

    by lovecraftian

What Rothman, and so many of these studio fucks don't get, is that we ARE THE MONEY. Look, no one goes to see these things 3 or 4 times the way we do--which makes up for a HUGE portion of the profit. We are the reason for the midnight showings. We were the ones who made SPIDERMAN the powerhouse it was. IT WAS THIS SITE, AND MORIARITY SPECIFICALLY, THAT STOPPED JON PETERS FROM MAKING LEX LUTHOR A KRYPTONIAN! If we don't like something we can dictate it's future. Now I'm not going to see this stupid ass thing; because frankly, it looks lame--mere filler until a movie I actually WANT to see comes along. This idea, however, that "we'll all see it anyway" is self-fulfilling bullshit. If you don't want to see it... just don't. Don't listen to some chump who shows up here saying WATCHMEN sucks and looks "gay" (love that particular gem from the bigoted peanut gallery)while simultaneously excoriating us for saying "boycott Fox" by telling us we'll see it anyway?! Come on! These are the dicks that think that FAST AND THE FURIOUS is "badass" and that RESIDENT EVIL is "the shit." These are the cocks that actually believe the law is designed for the sole purpose of fucking people over to make as much money as you possibly can in as ruthless a way as possible. Cocks like Rothman. Unbelievable, unrepentant cocks. So, fuck'em. Let THEM whine all they want. The plants can go screw. WE make the decisions as to what succeeds and what doesn't. So let's send Rothman a clear signal, "YOU DON'T HAVE OUR FUCKIN' MONEY. YOU WON'T HAVE OUR FUCKIN' MONEY. SO EITHER START COUNTING ON LOVE-LORN, WAL-MART MOM DOLLARS FROM A SLEW OF NICHOLAS SPARKS MOVIES OR RETIRE, YOU USELESS PIECE OF SHIT."

    The Problem With This...

by MaxThrust is that you can clearly see how the claws link to a bar in his clenched fists. We knew this was how they made the effect, but for a publicity photo, you'd think they'd at least airbrush them out.

  • Jan. 1, 2009, 11:47 a.m. CST

    The Rothman quote

    by waggy

What's annoying about it isn't the disrespect shown towards us. It's the fact that it's just a stupid mentality to have from a business standpoint. Iron Man made more money than any X-Men movie (and double both Fantastic Four movies) with a lesser known character, and it did so by first generating a buzz with fans and then delivering a film that created great word of mouth. Dark Knight grossed more than twice as much as any X-Men movie by staying true to the character and source material, and yes making the fans happy. Sure X-Men 3 opened huge, but that opening weekend accounted for about half its total gross. Does Mr. Rothman understand that quality films continue making money after their opening weekend? Does he understand that a movie people enjoy will sell more dvd's and spawn more lucrative sequels? Do Fox stockholders understand this? Are the hardcore X-Men fans going to see Wolverine regardless of how much it sucks? Yep. But do you really want the most vocal demographic for your product spreading negative buzz about the movie before and after the film is released? What a fucking dipshit.

  • Jan. 1, 2009, 11:52 a.m. CST

    Definitely Boycott

    by Mad-Maximus

I was looking fwd to this movie but after the Watchmen debacle, Rothman's directly insulting the core fanbase, & being blind to the source material I am going to not pay one cent directly or indirectly towards any Fox Studio media production.

Fucking A...We don't have to see any fucking movie that fox put out, even if it's the best fucking movie ever. I will only see Watchmen because it's not fair to they guys who worked in it under WARNER studios, just to see it all go to nothing by the hands of fox, but if you are working for fox, making a fox movie you are the enemy i will not fucking see your movie i will fucking download it, i want to see how much fucking money of the fans you have you piece of shit ROTman, i wish i fucking get to know you in my lifetime, like Hi i'm Tim Rothman just so i can say what a piece of shit you are to your face, i'm not going to go all macho like i'm going to punch him in the face, because i know i will not do it, but i will verbally destroy him, who cares, he is not going to give me any job, i don't fucking want one from him i already have one...

These licenses are too respected and EXPENSIVE for any of the no budget studios to get them methinks. Times have changed and I really think it's impossible for something like the old cap and punisher to happen again. Well, Ghost Rider was pretty bad. I really think it can only go upwards from here...I do believe the first person on the hunt for these franchises would be Marvel themselves.

That other guy was right. Maybe a movie like TDK doesn't rely soley on fanboys to make money because it crosses genres into crime drama and Batman is a much older, more established character. It's been around since the 40's, had a TV show that the baby boomers remember watching while high in the 60'sand it got really good reviews. The only thing this movie has going for it to the non-fanboys is Hugh Jackman's name and that's hardly a sure thing. So Rothsteinbergfeld can scoff at the fanboy market but with this project, they'll be lucky to get that.

  • You new they were shit..going in, and yet you said "oh geez guess I gotta see's my ten bucks" I'm not taking Rothman's side..fuck it..someone set this clown on fire if I care, but he's right. Oh and BTW..does this mean everyone here boycotting Fox is going to stop watching The Simpsons or Family Guy, including tossing out your DVD collections. You guys screaming boycott fox are paper fucking tigers.

The only thing we can hope for

    by cornponious

is that it DOES tank and then Marvel swoops in and makes it the way it's supposed to be made. With Huge Ackman of course.
And I saw those bars connected to the claws as soon as I looked at it. I guess the reason they didn't take the time to photoshop them out is the same reason the movie WILL tank: Rothman doesn't give a shit.

Because the AICN reading, web-surfing geekboy fans make up such a small percentage of the total movie going audience.[br] [br]If every single AICN reader refrained from seeing Wolverine, or any other Fox property, it would make a marginal dent, at best, to their bottom line.[br] [br]In the end, the money truly comes from the mass audience which is composed of 14-30 year olds who watch reality shows and could give a shit about studio politics or faithfullness to source material.[br] [br]They just walk into the theater on weekends and pick the movie that looks like it may have the biggest explosions and or tits in it and that's the target that Rothman and his stooges are aiming for.[br] [br]Rothman is exactly like Georgie Weiss, the sleazy producer in "Ed Wood" as this exchange between he and Ed exemplifies:[br] [br]Edward D. Wood, Jr.: Well, I started thinking about what you were saying about how your movies need to make a profit. Now, what is the one thing, if you put it in a movie, it'll be successful?[br] [br]Georgie Weiss: Tits.[br] [br]Edward D. Wood, Jr.: No, better than that. A star.[br] [br]Georgie Weiss: you must have me confused with David Selznick. I don't make major motion pictures; I make crap.[br] [br]Edward D. Wood, Jr.: Yes, but if you take that crap and put a star in it, then you've got something.[br] [br]Georgie Weiss: Yeah. Crap with a star. [br]And this one, perhaps even moreso revealing the mindset of this man...[br] [br]Edward D. Wood, Jr.: Is there a script?[br] [br]Georgie Weiss: Fuck no! But, there's a poster![br] [br]Boycott Fox!

I think a marketing guy at Fox will be demoted, reprimanded or fired over releasing this picture. One: as many have pointed out, the claw prop handle can clearly be seen through Jackman's fingers, and Two: surely there must be a better picture to build anticipation for their tentpole movie than this one of Wolverine in what seems like a Turkish bathhouse. Way to dispel those rumors, Fox.

    Tom Rothman...

    by 11dayempire

...I'm boycotting Fox as long as you remain with the studio, and I'll be telling everyone I know to do the same. It might end up with only three or four of my friends and family doing the same, but if every fan on this site does the same, that's three or four thousand tickets. If every comic book store tells every one of its customers to do the same, if the members of every online bulletin board whose members care about the quality of the films they see get on board, I think you might start taking notice. You absolute CUNT.

    by lovecraftian

Here's where your logic breaks down. IF we watch Family Guy and Simpsons, we are giving a approval to quality shows that actually poke fun at the studio from which they hail. It may make them money through sponsorship and DVD sales. But it's better material. (BTW, you can't save a studio based on two television shows even if they are flagships.) Their movies, however, are a different animal given that they are specific investments which REQUIRE box office returns in order to be profitable. And for your information, after ROTS I doubt anyone here stood in line to see CLONE WARS. (I know I didn't.) For that matter, I didn't bother with the DVD's either. You can piss and moan, or sit back and nay say. But those events I mentioned before happened. And because, the preview trailer looks abyssmal, and X3 WAS abyssmal, I've got better things to do with my cash (especially in this economy) than see crap. See? Despite what you might think, a boycott is extremely simple to pull off. WE JUST DON'T GO. I know you think we're all just syncophantic virgins clamoring for the next big Hollywood turd; but, please, at least give us the credit of not actually being you. If we say it sucks, and we're boycotting, guess what? WE CONTROL THE WEB. When we're pissed off enough, we're the fucking OUTER LIMITS announcer. We can bring back JERICHO. We can crush BIRDS OF PREY. And we can seal the fate of a bad comic book movie. How much profit do you think CATWOMAN made? Why the hell do you think Fox bought these properties in the first place? Comic book movies do well because of the fierce devotion of their built-in fanbase. Sure, the executive dickweeds think your average, American Idol lover will go see it anyway. And they will. But they DO need us to promote it to the kinds of stratospheric profit they hope to gain by throwing 100 million dollars into a project. I don't care how little Joe Sportsbar thinks of me as a person, HE doesn't create the buzz. I do. WE DO. In short, if Rothman wanted to fuck himself out of an executive gig by pissing all over the built-in fanbase of an intellectual property his BUSINESS PURCHASED to gain big returns, he's done a spectacular job. It doesn't seem like much of a business plan to me. But hey... It is Fox

  • Jan. 1, 2009, 2:47 p.m. CST

    Wolverine looks...

    by wacko3205

decent...but that's about it. I don't know the bulk of the story for the film's sake but I've been a fan of the character for nearly two decades now. If they stuck to the book's line of context it would be great...but I aint to sure that's gonna materialize. I liked the fact that they showcased him in wars & what not but, if I'm honest, it did'nt look like they are pacing things correctly. Take it to Japan & go deep into the Weapon X program afterwards. I just don't see how they're gonna fit the Blob & Deadpool into all this & that's what's got me worried. As far as Rothman goes...whatever I guess. Sounds like a tool...but I don't know him, so I don't really pass judgement. If he's the reason...the real reason that Fox has blocked Watchmen from making date...then he can suck it till it's soft & that being said my friends...well that equals a mouthful.

    by wacko3205

Seriously...Leiv is no joke. Anyone that’s seen him act should know that the fool can act…& I don’t mean just action figure act either. To me…I’d much rather see a legit stagemen pull off a role instead of someone that just looks the part or can carry a super hero role on the meat alone while they leave the potatoes at the table. The guy’s solid & has proven his chops for many years. He looks the part & seems pretty convincing in the trailer…& honestly…I couldn’t give two shits about him being Jewish. What the F is up with that BS?!?! Honestly, I have no shame in admitting that I was shocked & appalled when Jackman was first announced as the shoe in for Wolverine…he was waaaaaaaay too sappy & far to pretty to pull off Wolverine…but it worked & here we are 4 films in loving the onscreen prospects of Wolvie…I say give the film a chance & see what happens. In the end…I’m most excited about seeing Durand try & pull off the fatman (even though it makes no sense) & also Danny Huston as Stryker.

The REASON these stories and characters worked in the first place is because of the very things you're screwing with. It has nothing to do with PLEASING US. It's a reduction, a dilution of the original ideas that makes you continue to make failure after failure. FUCK US... if you want to make good money, tell good stories and establish at the very least fascinating if not like-able characters. It has nothing to DO with US. The reason Fox always gets these unknown directors for their big projects is because they have a company-wide mandate to pay writers & directors peanuts. Gavin Hood and that guy who did Earth Stood Still were just coming off their breakthrough projects, and so Fox brings 'em on for basically nothing, and then runs roughshod over them all through production. Same with Tim Story and FF.

It's a recipe for disaster, as we've all seen.

Yeah, I like the Potter series....

1 and 2 were bland but okay. 3 was the shit. 4 took a step back. 5 was the shit, but 3 is still the best. I forget all the fucking names. Thats how much of a fan I am.
But whatever...the point is fuck EW for assuming every person going to see the movies has read all the fucking books and know where this is headed. Stupid fucking move on their part.

T2 and Predator are a perfect examples as well. Anytime you see a blu for under $20 new, it's not a's like Windex charging you more for "Clear Windex" when in reality they just don't add blue coloring but still charge more. Sadly, many great fliqs suffer from mediocre HD picture quality and, until the incessant double-dip bullshit makes it to the HD media market, you may as well be happy with upconverted SD dvd's as some of these blu-rays are barely above them in terms of PQ.

    Understanding of what, Master?

    by Darth Macchio

Of digital watches. And soon I shall have understanding of video cassette recorders and car telephones. And when I have understanding of them, I shall have understanding of computers. And when I have understanding of computers, I shall be the Supreme Being.
God isn't interested in technology. He knows nothing of the potential of the microchip or the silicon revolution. Look how He spends His time: forty-three species of parrot, nipples for men.
Slugs!
Slugs?
He created slugs? They can't hear. They can't speak. They can't operate machinery. I mean, are we not in the hands of a lunatic?

    by lovecraftian

I'm glad I made your day. It's very apparent sex, intelligent thought or sense of an accomplished life wasn't on your dance card today. Glad I could be of help. As for Miller, I'm not that much of a fan myself. Moore, however, is another matter. Frankly, you remind me of the Proverb that says, "Better to be thought a fool, than to open your mouth (or, in this case, use a keyboard) and remove all doubt." To say that the writings of Alan Moore are dumb and for dumb people is really a statement of such colossal foolishness as to go right up there with "...And you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska." Someone who is hailed by a multitude of other writers as a storytelling genius--I imagine there's got to be few intelligent folks in that rather large swath-- and whose product, THE WATCHMEN, made TIME's Top 100 BEST NOVELS (NOT GRAPHIC NOVELS)OF THE 20TH CENTURY LIST, and has won multiple awards for his stories, is not someone just be easily dismissed as dumb. This, of course, doesn't mean that you don't have a right to your opinion. But when your opinion differs from a wide array of really, REALLY SMART people. Perhaps you should take a step back, reassess some facts you may have missed, and keep your thoughts, few and far between as they are, to yourself.

  • Jan. 2, 2009, 3:08 p.m. CST

    lovecraftian -- you're a snide prick.

    Rothman's Wolverine

    by Cobbio

It sucks that Gavin Hood was fucked by Fox during the making of "Wolverine." I've been a big defender of this film until now, based on Hood's earlier work, but hearing about how badly things went behind the scenes leaves me thinking it's not Hood's film anymore. It's Tom Rothman's. And that's not good, considering Fox Studios hasn't placed one film (not one!) in the 25 top-grossing films of 2008.
Performance-wise, that's batting a pathetic .000. I guess you're making good decisions now, Tom Rothman, huh? The kind of important decisions that bring huge money and prestige to Fox Studios?
Oh, that's right, you're not. You've actually been making horrible, studio-killing decisions that are backfiring in your shit-stained face. How's that feel, by the way?
I love Gavin Hood, but I just decided to skip "Rothman's Wolverine." Sucks, but oh well. I'm not paying money for mediocrity.

I look at Jackman and all I still see is Timothy Dalton playing Bond. He kinda looks the part but he's stiff as a freaking board. And I hope someone leaks Watchmen to DVD bootlegs, even if it sucks I want to see it. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going over to a paralell universe where Russel Crowe took the part and won the Oscar for it.

    Snide Prick?

    by lovecraftian

"Yes. Many have noticed, just look up at the posts with the subject 'CRAPPY PRACTICAL EFFECTS' or 'FAKE BLADE GRIPS IN HIS HANDS.' Don't act like you made some big revelation you lazy fuck." & "OH FUCK YOU ALL-- WRONG TB!"--Snide, perhaps. (Though I'd argue that's a big, fat bundle of hypocrisy on your part.) Able to represent a reasonable arguement as to why making statements about Alan Moore being a "dick eater" and "mediocre writer loved by dumb people" (which if you'd bothered to take your own advice and read the entirity of this TB you'd know how this had gotten started in the first place)is NOT a credible critique of his work or fan base... Certainly. It's not as if I'm above base ad hominem attacks. My posts are rife with them. It would be hypocrisy to declare otherwise. (Though I think few people could begrudge me those attacks here.) I do, however, have more than just personal taste and anger at someone else's opinion on my side. If someone said, "I think WATCHMEN is overrated. I enjoyed it, and caught the subtext. But it didn't work for me." I would gladly accept their well-stated opinion and move on. But one thing I find thoroughly intolerable is when someone says something as utterly antithetical to reality as implying that Alan Moore can't write and his fanbase is stupid for thinking he can. Maybe I AM a snide prick. But I'm right. And I am perfectly at ease with pointing out obvious missteps in critical discourse (sometimes with ridicule) when someone makes such a profoundly uninformed series of insipid insults to myself or others who share MY taste.

  • Jan. 2, 2009, 5:51 p.m. CST

The liberal movie/tv industry needs to stop working for FOX

    by kbarber29

I've never seen bigger hypocrites. Everytime they help FOX make money, they help FOX promote their maligned agenda through FOX and FOX NEWS. A boycott by us won't do anything. Actors, directors, writers, and especially Joss Whedon are hypocrites and morally bankrupt if they continue to work for FOX. When will Joss figure out that the reason he gets dicked around by FOX is because he's a liberal. He came up witht he plot for X-men 3, yet recieved no credit for it.

Rothman is like the worst kind of political strategist.

    by Royston Lodge

I happen to work in politics, and I cannot imagine a political strategist saying something like, "fuck the base. We already have their votes." That's how you LOSE. We have a saying - you don't make friends of your enemies by making enemies of your friends. Fucking up a property so the fanbase hates it won't bring in new viewers. To the new viewers, it's just another stupid comic book movie anyway. Why the hell should anybody be interested in a Wolverine movie if they AREN'T already a fan?! If you can't get the fans, you're NOT going to get new viewers.
