Hey folks, Harry here... You know how Fox, the fucking crazy ass evil studio, is working to block you from seeing WATCHMEN? Well, Fox owned MYSPACE has recently posted one helluva good exclusive WATCHMEN piece - and if their parent corporation ends up being defeated somehow... we'll all be seeing WATCHMEN soon enough - and frankly soon enough can NOT FUCKING BE SOON ENOUGH! To mount an effective campaign against Fox, chose a focused target that will make them afraid - their tentpole release, Wolverine. As much as I like comic book movies, I'll do what's right and target those in the wrong.
Also, for all those who say that Fox is in the right legally, don't forget that a mere day or two before the judge's tentative ruling he made a statement saying that he couldn't give a tentative ruling because the facts weren't clear enough. That's why his ruling was such a surprise. So, the issues may not be as cut-and-dried as talkbackers are making it seem now. WB will kick Fox's behind in court! -
Looks like more of the same from Snyder. He is not a good storyteller and hasn't gotten a single good performance out of an actor yet, so I have no reason to suspect this will be any different.

It really does LOOK great. I'm not gonna praise or hate it yet tho. Gonna bide my time and wait until I've seen it. It's hard to not praise it , they really nailed the look of it and the characters all LOOK right ( especially Dan who I was afraid would look to sleek in middle age).

Hell, I was thinking of skipping it anyways because X3 left such a bad taste in my mouth, so having a reason to do makes it that much more reasonable. I don't really care who's in the right here, there's a movie I want to see, Watchmen, and through their actions, Fox may cause problems with me seeing it. Therefore, Fox can eat all the dicks.

This action by fox is yet another example of business as usual in Hollywood. It is just on display because of the internet and the way we all swoon over movie gossip. And lets face the average movie go-er would never know this info because we are fanboy nerds that live for this shit. So, as much as X3 made me taste bile, and as badly as I would love to see Watchmen in the hands of the people that made it, you all know that you will be there on opening day for Wolvie and Watchmen-under FOX release and then bitch in the intertubes about how fucking bad they are. The man can cut a damn fine trailer, as evident with 'Dawn of the Dead' and '300'(which was better than the movie turned out to be), as well as these 'Watchmen' trailers. Please, Zach, please. Don't let me be taken out of the fantasmagasm of a story by the performances either.

Despite Ozzy looking like he's a 19-year-old kid and The Comedian looking like a 40-year-old man from 1940-1974 (and his face not looking NEARLY screwed-up enough post-beer bottle), this film looks like it's the comic film of 2009!Oh, and I was gonna ban WOLVERINE, anyway, just because the previews make it look SO bad! I'm still laughing at the thought of dumpy, doughy Liev Schreiber (wearing cheap Halloween fangs and Lee Press-On Nails) playing uber-bad@$$ Sabertooth and trying to hide his flabby physique under layers of clothing, while fighting a pumped-up Hugh Jackman...WOLVERINE will be this year's Little Miss VAN HELSING. :P

everything that Snyder just said about what the "Watchmen" will explore, has already been explored within "The Dark Knight." The only difference is that Batman is still heroic at the end of "TDK", and the Joker is a pure evil villain. In "Watchmen", there are no heroes, or villains, and I think Snyder will capture that essence of the comic-book. And the only thing that "TDK" didn't explore, was how the existence of Batman will effect our pop culture, and our economy. Snyder will most likely explore that part of "Watchmen", and then show how the existence of superheroes truly effects our way of life.
I can't wait for this film. :) -
I still need to read the graphic novel and so I don't have any preconceptions. I'm not a fan of 300, but I like what I saw in this video.

The acting is what makes all the crazy effects believable- I think the effects are all there (which is Snyder's specialty) but, honestly, you can tell when the acting's shit from a trailer.
Dr Manhattan just sounds like some dude talking that's been rendered in CGI- not a coldly logical sociopath- which is how I pictured his voice sounding.
To capture a character takes acting skill, not visual finesse. Look at Deniro's Vito Corleone- you really believe it's Brando's character but younger, though they look nothing alike, because he captured it in the voice and mannerisms.
They can get the look as spot on as they want, and in a trailer it'll seem flawless, but you need a director that can get a good performance out of his cast.

I'm saying Jon is a complicated character but you don't get that from listening to him.
It's not just that, Malin Akerman- in all that I've seen- comes off really stiff and emotionless; and if it matters how the characters look then she looks ridiculous. -
Coldly logical sociopath? That's how you read Dr. Osterman? The dude exists out of space and time, forgive him if he's a little disconnected. The whole arc with him and Silk Spectre is one of the most human and tragic storylines I've ever read. The look on his face when he sees her and Dan asleep together towards the end of the novel is him recapturing his humanity in some small way. Sociopath? No.

Still it LOOKS pretty damn great, at least visually.
Though Snyder seems to have managed to make one of the best scenes in the book throwaway at best, losing all the tension and menace.(I hope that isn't a harbinger of things to come.)
I have to say acting-wise it's not shit. The Spirit acting WAS complete shit. A MASSIVE pile of shit that was obvious in seconds of viewing it's clips. The "tone" of the Spirit was all over the place with it being patently obvious the actors didn't have a clue whether they were supposed to be playing it all for huge laughs or not.
This is a mixed bag of acting so far, some looks solid, some less so. Though Manhattan wasn't a Vulcan bad guy, he was remote and emotionally hard to reach and gradually grew more so throughout the story. Crudup seems to have caught some of that at least. Ozy still looks all wrong to my eyes but I'll roll with it.
Fact is the characters already have great dialogue as long as Snyder doesn't fuck with it too much.
But it's definitely going to be one of the most interesting Superhero Movies yet made and particularly for most of those who are familiar with the original pretty essential viewing even if it might eventually ultimately underwhelm compared to the source.
As for FOX, fuck them. They make Fox News and have made a pile of shit Movies lately. Reason enough not to suck their corporate cock surely ?
We'll see how dumb they are as even if WB are hardly the "little guy" and didn't read the small print it's pretty fucking clear that waiting till just before release means it's a corporate "shake down" executed by shysters looking to snatch as much money as possible with release deadline blackmail. If Fox overplay this it will backfire badly. -

1) Hey, Snyder: First time a superhero film is made as "cultural"? A film or story made within its own time period is "cultural". So... if I watch Superman: The Move today and marvel at the pimp who exclaims that the Man Of Steel is wearing a "bad out-fit"... is that not cultural?

I don't often post but this particular subject has made me chuckle. Let's take off our fan-boy hats for a second and ask one question. Which studio is REALLY hurt by all the publicity? The answer: NEITHER. WB knew they didn't own it but the public buzz over the court battle would only make people more curious. Fox knew they were going to 'spring the trap' and get at least a settlement. Sure they fans will consider them the bad guys, but it's still 'FOX v. WB' in the news for MONTHS if they drag this out till March. Free publicity for a movie that is now set to make a ton of cash whether it sux or not. I'm just sayin... -

until the film was finished before putting out the financial outlay involved in legal proceedings rather than doing it before WB had anything worth releasing. Bad Fox should have done it at casting when the filming could have fallen through or at anytime during the filming when it might have been dropped due to it not working therefore having nothing to block the release.Wasn't this problem of ownership discussed several months ago on this website and yet people are surprised and riled that Fox is doing what they are legally right to do. WB seemed to have tried pulling a stunt here and failed. It will get released and most likely on time after compensation to Fox is agreed in the courts. Don't see the problem really.And after watching the trailer, I'm hoping that there really isn't that much slow motion in the actual film and that the actors performances come across a bit better when in context of the whole film and not just trailer.

For example, were I a reviewer (I'm not), I might go with something like..."Warner Bros. Presents 'Watchmen' ""20 Century *cough*dickmove*cough* Fox Presents 'Watchmen' "Just a thought. If it sucks, oh well.

Don't Warner's have a legal team to look for 'ownership' before embarking on project? Now FOX want a slice of the cake. Y'know what. They're entitled to it. Sorry, but they are. You would be okay that someone took your property that you have the rights to you wouldn't try to sue anybody andyou wouldn't try to stop it's launch because people are excited for it even though you own it and the law is on your side ... you wouldn't do what fox is doing ..?

Fox will get a chunk of the profits, distribution, and you will probably see there logo in the beginning of the movie. I think the movie looks great and you have to give Zack Synder some props for convincing the WB execs to keep the movie in 1985. My only fear is that the acting in the movie will be very wooden. So far all we've seen (except the internet elite who have seen a 1/2 hour) is quick clips will heavy back ground music. Either way this movie's release date will be a nerd holiday.

FOX is obviously being the asshole here, but WB really screwed up here. How can you go ahead and make a film without making sure you have all the rights to do so? I understand doing some pre-production work but to go all out and shoot a finished film?
One of the reasons it took so long to get Spiderman to the screen was that the rights were tied up for so long. The legal team at Sony Pictures did their job, what was the team at WB doing? -

Ah, we all know Fox sucks. They'll probably delay this movie just to prove that they can. Let's face it, when was the last great Fox sci-fi movie again? As compared to WB's, which was some movie about a bat vigilante or something...
Then again, WB cancelled the GLOBAL FREQUENCY series over a toys-out-of-pram tantrum the studio threw because the pilot screener ended up on torrent. Not a bitch move on par with Fox's WATCHMEN stunt, but childish nonetheless... -
It's a great graphic novel, but it's pretty low key for what the public accepts from superhero movies these days. I'm aure people unfamiliar with the novel are imagining these big action sequences and chase scenes, of which there are none (unless Snyder sold out and added stuff that wasn't in the book).

I think the people defending Fox sound a little like plants. I would like to stand up for anyone defending a legitimate intellectual property right. But as far as I can determine, Fox played it pretty tricky and cute when they released Gordon to produce the film elsewhere, essentially building hidden poison pills into their agreement with him that let them come back with a novel interpretation of their rights AFTER they decided that the finished film might be valuable. It looks to me like they pretended to be releasing the rights to this film, while snickering up their sleeves that they had left themselves a way to fuck with people if something worthwhile actually got made. And I'm not going to stand up for trickery and underhanded dealing trying to dress itself up as an aggrieved property right.

What bugs people about this Watchmen flick is that it may finally reveal to all that the comic series was a dull piece of shit with great art.
Also the Flick looks like a Fox made movie. It's too clean and manufactured looking. Even the dirt looks clean.

Boycotting Fox alone won't be effective nor right since WB is at least as resposible. Geekdom needs to pick one movie from each studio to boycott. Wolverine and something from WB (when does Jonah Hex come out?). AICN should take charge of this and make it an event to demonstrate our mighty power of the purse.

It's a bargaining chip and a helluva big one. What could possibly be in it for them to block the release except to create animosity and bad will. Everything I've read from people actually in the know is that they want the rights to the Batman series on DVD. Perhaps they want more now that they see the buzz around the movie but they're not going to block it. It will come out on time. Everyone needs to calm down but should still pretend to be outraged so that Fox can see the animosity they'll create should they're plan backfire.

That trailer looked cool, but the scene where the superhero lady is "older" ( don't know if it's supposed to be her mom or what ) looked really bad... like 80's aged makeup bad. He slams a guy's eyeball into a pencil, stabs another guy through the mouth, shoots a shitload of people, including his own men, and blows the fuck out of the leading lady (when have you ever seen that?). And blows up a hospital. What did you want, Saw? Hostel? No one in either of those movies were as twisted as The Joker, no matter how much gore was involved. You suck as a producer. You're fired. It looks like this Snyder guy understands the material and may have gotten it right... I remember when it was announced that Peter Jackson was doing LOTR (the unfilmable novels), but that worked out just fine.

We all want to see a hard R-rated adaptation of the Arkham Asylum graphic novel, directed by David Fincher (Se7ven Fincher, not Benjamin Buttons Fincher). But it's not going to happen. Just take solace in the fact that there were a ton of screaming mothers crying about how violent TDK was. It really did push the envelope. Luckily all the MPAA cares about are swearing and boobies.

I remain a big fan of "300," and can't wait to see "Watchmen" and all other projects Snyder directs in the future.
I think he's a creative director with a good head on his shoulders who takes chances. We need more of those in Hollywood.
And to those who've mentioned that Zach doesn't pull good performances out of his actors, you're myopic and dead wrong. Has Gerard Butler ever inhabited a character like King Leonidas before, ever? The answer is no. And who do you think pulled such an iconic, asskicking performance out of Butler? That's right, it was Snyder. He's much better than you're giving him credit for.
I hope the Fox distribution case gets solved so we can watch "Watchmen" next spring. I really do. -
Yes, everyone should be able to admit that technically Fox has a legitimate case. We know this. But there's a difference between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. Fox was not taken advantage of. They could have easily settled things long ago with Fox receiving some monetary figure but Fox is deliberately exploiting a legal loophole like a dirty $cientologist to bully the competition. And that is reprehensible regardless of whether they technically have a case. Ideally the courts shouldn't be used for ensuring justice, not as a bullying tactic. Has there ever been any legal battle in Hollywood history that has been anything like this? As far as I know, there hasn't. Trying to justify shameful behavior with some cliche like "it's just business" is bollocks. There's even honor among thieves; shouldn't Fox should be held to a higher standard than that.

Oh, and enough with the "Wolverine" contempt! Y'all can whine and complain all you want, that's fine, but I thought that trailer kicked more ass than all three "X-Men" films combined. Gavin Hood is a heck of a director (see "Tsotsi"), and he'll put a noticeably R-leaning bloody punch into "Wolverine."
Liev Schreiber is also a tremendously good actor when given solid material, and I think his Sabertooth will grab people's attention.
Complain all you want, that's fine. You'll just end up looking like whiny bitches after you see the movie. -

The highlights (mostly, new stuff):
- More Ackerman goodies. On costume, her moves are just...super-heroic drooling coolness. Hard to describe, she just got the right heroic poses. About the acting, I think she is doing great.
Before putting the costume on, a bitter and sad former self. After, she is another kind of animal. A exhilarating one. You gotta pay attention.
- Yes, Dan is a fat geek, yay. And we can see the white snow costume (not used later) in the
"Sit and be melancholic" scene.
- No one, I say, no one missed the futuristic eletric cars. They Would be too distracting, indeed.
Like a George Lucas "redone" movie and all the beeping gadgets flying around the actors, heh. Ok, of course, I hope to see the futuristic shit on screen, Gibbons art is that cool.
- Loved the "Blade Runnerian" transparent umbrella from the "Ro walking down the street with the
sisters" scene, heh.
- The B-29 shot was so geekstastic dreamy. Could be an awesome wallpaper or poster.
- Jon´s first girlfriend is hot. Even better, angry hot.
- "Laurie Gotta Puke Everytime We Teleport", gonna be the next hit song, heh.
- Finally, we can see Ozy emoting something. The "I am such an asshole" smirk on the face, outside the club, just perfect.
Now:
- Older Blake´s white hair... It´s a strange mix of Wolverine and Beetlejuice, I swear. Where is the gimp mask when we need one? Heh.
- Mask effects on Rorschach are getting better and better. Everyone and their mother will want to see the prequel: "The Street Adventures of Raw Shark Boy and Owl Dude", heh. But, still, sometimes he got... too much "body expression" going on. I know, the actor is behind a mask and have to express himself using the rest of the body (like V). But I always pictured the main man as a "slower and avoiding unnecessary movements" type of fella.
- Better to cut out the front lights from Archie on the opening shot ("out of the water"). Looks cheap. Talking about Archie, every child and adult in this world will want to buy one. Especially the Archie Shaped Corn Flakes, heh.
- And the final shot of New York, damn, every time I see it, I think, "it's Heroes again, blah". I hope it´s only the tip of the SQUIDLESS BERG OF MASS DESTRUCTION!... :-p

Dawn of the Dead: I considered it sacrilege to remake that film but Snyder nailed it, absolutely fucking nailed it. But 300 is a pile of pretty garbage, and this Watchmen looks like a ridiculously horrible cosplay of Moore and Gibbons' book. It looks right but feels utterly wrong. The Comedian sounds like he's in a sitcom, Malin Akerman sounds like Cameron Diaz in There's Something about She-Ra, Matthew Goode is in a horrible fucking remake of Velvet Goldmine, and the bit with the Comedian and his flamethrower looks like CGI bullshit screaming of fake. This is the uncanny valley version of Watchmen - it looks eerily similar to it but your guts tell you it's all wrong. And Snyder's commentary on what it's about doesn't hearten me one bit. He doesn't seem to grasp what it's about at all.

This kind of legal injunction doesn't just materialize out of thin air. I can guarantee you all, that behind closed doors, and away from the uneducated, knee jerk, slathering entertainment media...VERY serious negotiations have been going on for months..if not years. Fox legal would not be so naive as to spring a "trap", as everyone here seems to think, as the legal system frowns upon people who let such things happen so as to take advantage of the situation. If this had been the case the judge would have never granted Fox motion, as they had plenty of time raise objections before this time. What it looks like to me, is that WB felt they had a stronger claim, the legal wrangling between WB and Fox was going nowhere due to this, and Fox was forced into making the one move that is probably the LEAST financially advantageous to them given the costs and time involved in legal action of this sort.

Of all the posts on here, I think redfist was the only one who truly nailed the prediction about fanboy behavior: You will, with lemming like efficency go see this film AND Wolverine b/c of an almost sadomasochist yearning to be disappointed about some nitpick. Then, with nitpick firmly in your collective craws, you will leave the theater...come home, go online and cry about said nitpick here. Lost however, will be any respect to viewing the film's story and it's adaptation to screen, no matter how good or bad and that's a real shame. Instead I get to look forward to "It had better be a squid." for the rest of eternity.

You're wrong. Fox, if they had a rightful claim, should have come forth in a timely manner to assert their claim to the rights of Watchmen, but they didn't. I cannot count the many times Warner Bros. has attempted to launch, and aborted, the production of The Watchmen. This was done openly, and was well reported among the media and public, with no interference, written warning, or legal action forwarded by Fox, et al. Warner openly went as far as hiring writers, and directors, in addition to commissioning film scripts for the production...and yet, Fox said nothing with reference to their so-called ownership claim to the rights of Watchmen, this...over years of film development on this production by Warner Brothers? Instead, Fox allowed Warner Bros. to raise finances for The Watchmen film, spend millions on production development, special effects R&D, costumes, sets, actors, filming, marketing, and advertisements, etc.--then after the film was well into production, they, Fox, claim ownership???This was, is, a willful corporate tactic by Fox, one formed of malicious tampering, and corporate espionage of a kind. Fox' claims were not filed in a timely basis...thus, Warner has, in my view, a multi-billion dollar counter claim against Fox, et al, for damages, should they choose to file it, in respect to the loss of their investment in The Watchmen movie, related product tie-ins/product licensing, advertisement and marketing campaigns, etc., all due to Fox tampering...by illegally using the courts, to do so--again, this based upon Fox' foreknowledge of said ownership claims, or at least, foreknowledge that they should have had about said ownership, prior to Warner commencing production on Watchmen--rights that they failed to inform Warner Bros., et al, about; thus creating a situation of uniformed ignorance, where they, Fox--it could be argued, intentionally allowed...in order to lay in-wait to file this suspect lawsuit for the purposes of manufacturing a crime, were there was none, before--so they could demand a financial settlement (pay-out).According to established law, a judge is not allowed to assist in a crime...or to allow a entity or person/persons, to cause the court to render its assistance in perpetrating a crime, or collecting a debt with respect to any alleged crime as perpetrated by one criminal, in the form of a theft, against another. This judge however, is willfully ignoring established case law in that regard. For instance, if a Prostitute robs a John of drug money, the John should not be allowed to recover his lost money, with the court's assistance, or by any other means, as it was/is... money generated by illegal means. Or more to the point, if a young woman, age 17, enters a Over 21 Club...and a man 21 plus...meets her on premises, buys her drinks, and sleeps with her, that male, should not be later made a target of a statutory rape civil suit, since he would have every reason to believe that the young woman he met and slept with, was at least 21 years of age. The point is, he would have been the victim of a lure...one that entapped the male into committing a crime without his informed foreknowledge, that he indeed...was committing a crime. Once again, the alleged victim, entrapping the alleged defendant, into unknowingly committing a crime. Such is the case here, with Fox and Warner Bros. Fox' failure to assert their legal claims, in a timely basis, before a crime was committed, and before their rights were infringed upon, knowing that such a situation was unfolding, but failng to take steps to inform Warner of the truth of the matter, should deprive them, Fox, of all legal standing in court, as this is a case of unlawful and predatory entrapment for the express purposes of filing a legal claim for monetary gain at a later time, using the courts as a third party participant in the commission of that crime, for the purposes of securing said monies, illegally, through an apparent legal means, that being the courts.This should be the primary basis of Warner's counter claims. Further, the court should grant Warner a substantial monetary award on any counter claims that they may file in this case--claims that they should file immediately, as a shot across Fox' bow.

As Harry knows, and lots of other know, Fox's issue with WB and Watchmen date back to 2007. Its great to drive hits on the site to say, it just happened, they sprung it on them, etc. But noone who knew what was going on is surprised by Fox's latest move, if you negotiate for over a year for your rights, all while WB makes a movie finishes it and is about to put it in the theatre, you would do the same thing as well. This myth that Harry is helping perpetrate of "springing" the lawsuit on WB has as much validity as the $600 hammer that he thinks the pentagon bought.

there is more to this case than we the general public are aware of. If this were indeed a case wherein P allowed D to continue work on a project, with the knowledge that D had no legal right to do, and with the foresight that by allowing D to continue to do so would ultimately bring P financial gain through sui,t no judge in this country would risk the public humiliation, the wrath of his peers, and a reprimand or possible censor by the ABA in granting such an injunction as this judge has. I tell you there has been quite a bit of legal wrangling here, most likely by mediation (the legally preferred way of resolving these types of legal situations), and if this was the case no public notice nor news would be made apparent as mediated negotiations/agreements are almost always confidential. For Fox to make this move now, and in such a public way, tells me their case is strong...or they have bought the California legal system. Either way we will find out in a few weeks...either Fox is right and this thing will never see the light of day, WB is right and it'll be released on time...or they reach a settlement. No bad guys here...just corporations looking out for their stakeholders positions...and some really ballsy lawyers on both sides it seems.

Yes, the poor dumbass general public only know that the Movie might be delayed for an unknown amount of time or even indefinitely, because of a Legal move made by Fox at the 11th hour when the Movie is just about to be released. All of which happens to be true.
But there are, no doubt, top secret negotiations known only to these "ballsy Lawyers" (cunts) that make this an act of generous philanthropy and upstanding moral behaviour on the part of Fox.
I have no problem with calling those in WB stupid for not making the distributions rights airtight, (though the idea that some of the rights, ownership of this "property" and it's distribution arrangements are at all simple and can be stated with certainty that they "belong" to one party or the other is clearly not the case or it wouldn't be so contentious)But Fox will have to accept that unless they can prove they made a REAL and DOCUMENTED effort to sort this all out LONG before this VERY late hour in the production of the Movie they will always look like opportunistic money grubbers who are using the tactic of a threatened delay of the release by Lawyers to extort more money out of WB for a more generous settlement.

This happens all the time in the industry. Often times when a person or company feel that they have a case against another person or entity, they often allow that person or entity to fully manufacture or sell a product, or even the subject of intellectual property, before coming forward to assert their rights--their way of forcing a hefty financial settlement after the damage has been done. Again, this is done all the time in the industry. The difference here, is that Fox should have known whether or not it had rights to Watchmen once Warner went public with its intent to make the film--at which point, Fox should have informed them of their belief that they, in fact, own the copyrights. They didn't, thus...this is entrapment...and if they were not aware of their ownership rights at the time, that again, is Fox' fault. Fox should have acted as soon as they learned there was an issue, which would have been some years ago...meaning they should have acted within a timely basis, and or, within the statute of limitations once they learned that Warner Bros. was publishing press releases stating their intent to make the film. Since Warner was extremely public about making Watchmen, many years ago, Fox had the obligation to make its legal claims known at the time, if they believed they were the rightful copyright holders of Watchmen.This is a simple case of malfeasance by Fox. Others should not be punished for Fox' willful criminal actions or ineptitude in running their business. The judge in this case is either bought, or an incompetent buffoon. Why Warner's legal staff has not acted upon this information is grounds for their termination. Thanks JDanielP. Fox' negotiation ploy, if framed the way Conspiracy has outlined is in essence, blackmail and extortion under the guise of negotiation. I would assume that if Fox was operating in the manner Conspiracy believes that they are, that Fox would have revealed such early contacts with Warner Brothers, if they existed, in its legal papers. So far, no such information has be reported by the press.

Manhattan's Voice is terrible. He has the same exact voice as Billy Crudup, but it would be logical for it to be altered when he becomes Manhattan. The character's body is a product of his imagaination... he created himself as a muscleman, it seems to me his voice would also be different.

Again, this didn't just happen, Fox has been arguing with WB about this dating back to at least 2007. Its not something new that WB found out, its not something new that Fox came up with. Its something WB should have handled long before the movie was coming out, but was running around with its fingers in its ears saying we can't hear you instead. If Fox had made this very same movie and WB were carrying out the lawsuit, its funny how we all know Harry would be saying how dare Fox make a movie that WB has the rights to, but turn it around and Fox shouldnt be trying to protect its rights.

I didn't know about the 1987 date that you are quoting, but...Warner has held the property for years and Fox should have filed a lawsuit then. Since they didn't, that suggests that Conspiracy was right and the two parties were actively negotiating a settlement. If that is indeed true, then the judge should simply force both sides to settle, since it would appear that that was their original intention, giving Warner the belief that they indeed had the right to proceed with the production.

I'm simply saying that if Fox made a Watchmen movie it wouldn't necessarily be something worth seeing and therefore someone like Harry wouldn't be as emotionally invested in wanting to see it come out. These trailers are making it looks like they really nailed this adaptation and Fox would never do something this good, it'd be directed by the Hack Of The Week and it would be a crapfest. This would make someone like Harry react in the way you described because he knows WB would do a better job.

Fox doesn't care enough to worry if people boycott any film they make from now on. Warner Bros. were idiots for making a film they had no right to make in the first place, although it seems very shady to me that Fox would wait this late in the game to do anything about it. Sounds to me like Rothman and his ilk wanted to let Warner make the film and then reap the benefits from it free of charge. Movies have been made under the umbrella of several film companies at once many times before, most notably to me being "Master and Commander- The Far Side of the World" which was owned jointly by Universal, Miramax and Fox. A great film that upon release never made enough money to pay all the thumbs in the pie. The Watchmen may now be doomed to fail unless this judge decides to split up the rights. Either way that happens may see Fox push the release date back, or produce an inferior DVD product later that will cost consumers too much. However this is resolved, will end badly for fans. Boycott Fox if you must, but I think hating them just works a lot better.

I said if Fox were releasing "the exact same movie" that Harry would still be on the side of WB, and instead arguing that WB was having its rights violated. Now if you really dont believe thats true, you can argue the point, but your comment has nothing to do with my point, that Harry is going to take WBs side on this no matter what. WB sold the rights to FOX then decided to make the movie anyways without reacquiring the rights, WB is in the wrong here and I think it fairly silly to take WBs side on this effort, given the poor treatment they've given to Alan over the years, you know the guy who really wrote the story in question.

You really need to read the New York Times article from Dec 30th, or google the story and look for some of the older articles (like the original Aug 18th judgement against WB) and realize that the lawsuit was filed in Feb of 2008 after months of negotiations before that. WB acquired the rights to make the movie in May of 2006 according to Nikkie Finke's timeline (which is pretty accurate), they havent owned them for a long time as you seem to be implying, and its well known that FOX informed WB before frame 1 was shot that FOX (and FOX alone) had distribution rights to the film. Filmjunk has an interesting article from an insider at FOX, that again shows that WB (and Larry Gordon) are in the wrong here, cant distribute a movie someone else owns the distribution rights too (and it even points out about the 17.5 Million WB had to pay for doing that for the Dukes of Hazzard).

Perhaps you are correct(?), but if I was representing Fox as the point person of its legal team, I would have asked for an injunction to stop the production from commencing in the first place. If you have a valid legal claim that you hold the sole, or partial, rights to disputed material(s)...and the financial means to assert your right in court, then it seems to me that you have a responsibility to do so in regard to seeking all available legal remedies to you...before allowing matters to reach such a stage as this?
The soul of this case is clearly to be found in those closed door negotiations between the two studios. If Fox was offering or talking a settlement deal to...and with...Warner Brothers, at any time during those negotations, then Warner would have the active belief that indeed they had the right, or would have the rights, to proceed with the production. But any studio that greenlights a $100+ million film for which it doesn't even own the rights to distribute (or even has the slightest doubt about that fact) should fire it's entire legal department. Period.

The problem is that Fox owns "Distribution" rights, its only illegal for WB to try and "distribute" the movie, they can't get an injunction to stop them from making the movie, they can only get an injunction to stop them from distributing the movie, which is what they are going to court about, and which they have been fighting about since WB started this whole thing by buying the watchmen property from Larry Gordon without him owning distribution rights (which still were owned by Fox). Someone pointed out to me that the party in San Antonio where the SFX guys were telling me that FOX still has distribution rights has to be Dec 2006, since I didnt make the party in 2007, so if its known in Dec 2006 by the SFX crowd working for WB that the watchmen distribution rights were tainted its fairly disengenous for WB to act as if this is a new event sprung on them, and silly for Harry to support this ludicrous rewriting of history. Whats next, Peter Jackson should get to make the final Harry Potter movie because they would do a really cool one, and they dont need to to acquire rights or any of that silly legal stuff for Harry Potter, because its a director and producer Harry likes?

The settlement, I would assume, would have to be based on cost sharing as well as the obvious profit sharing. If the distribution rights go to Fox, then there would have to be some kind of profit sharing scheme set up between the two studios, that, or a full buy-out of the production by Fox. But should the latter occur, Fox runs the risk of Watchmen bombing at the box office...and they will carry the cost of the production, distribution, advertisements and promotion, should they agree to buy out Warner. I think what may wind-up happening is that one gets the international rights...and the other the domestic rights, still, Fox would have to defray some of the outstanding production costs, at least half, before Warner would agree. There would also has to be some agreement on the level of promotion, advertisement, number of film prints, and theater screen count, product tie-ins, any product placement deals, and control of after-market monies, etc. This is such a messy case, it seems that a complete buy-out... either by Warner or Fox, is the best way to go.

For them to distribute internationally, so it won't be as simple as just giving Fox rights to international.
