Herc’s Seen The First Two Hours Of LOST’s Almost-Last Season!!

I am – Hercules!!
The screener begins with a warning: Don't give away the major plot twists of the first two hours of “Lost’s” fifth season (airing Jan. 21). This proves limiting. A few notes: * The season begins (again) with an awakening and a record-player. And twitchy scientist Daniel Faraday will very soon throw a little meta-illumination on why producers like to begin season openers with that device. * This line is uttered in the first season-five teaser: “We went through six carbon drill-bits and the last one just fried.” * The flashbacks and flashforwards are gone and, I’m guessing (and hoping), gone for good. The show now moves freely between players, back and forward in time, no longer tied to one particular character for the length of an episode. * The first hour is a corker, aggressively advancing the story in all kinds of directions. * By far the most intriguing developments in the first two hours occur on the island. The second hour feels like a bit of a time-killer, focused on creating an obstacle that will keep The Oceanic Six from getting back to the island too soon. * The most interesting part of the second hour may be something Ben says as he directs Jack to pack his suitcase. * If you’ve been wondering if showrunner Carlton Cuse was just teasing when he hinted that the island may have moved in time, highlight some invisotext for a definitive answer. The Island did indeed move through time, though Cuse was not telling us a key detail about that move. * Faces from past episodes turn up at unexpected moments. (Hopefully the names of those playing these characters will be left out of the opening titles to preserve the surprises.) * Characters we don’t see in the first two hours: Jacob, Christian, Charlie, Claire, Boone, Shannon, Michael, Walt and Smokezilla. * A character referenced since season two but not actually introduced until his or her appearance in the mobisodes (the ones compiled on the new season-four DVD set) plays a memorable role in these two hours. * The two clips we’ve seen featuring Jack, Ben, Kate and Aaron are from the first 15 minutes of the first episode: * How does hour one end, spoiler-boy? “Oxford,” Penny Widmore is told. * How does hour two end, spoiler-boy? “Then God help us all,” Ben Linus is told.

    Lost, BSG & 24

    by tangcameo

My only three reasons for having a television. Four if you count TCM. BSG is ending. 24 is becoming a bit of a joke (when the CTU boss began updating the prez and higherups at the beginning of each epi last season, I had a hard time not laughing at just how preposterous it all sounded). Once Lost ends next season, I may take up reading, or drinking, or knitting or sex or something. Maybe finally get that Great Canadian Novel written and finished.

Ana Lucia wouldn't make any sense--she was actually ON the show, not just referenced, and she wasn't in the mobisodes. (Same goes for Doc Arzt, who someone else suggested--he's also been on the show, not just referenced.) I think it's pretty obviously Frogurt--there's really no one else it COULD be.

    Done with flashes?

    by David Lazarus Long

Interesting... However, when new characters are introduced I'll be interested to see if they bring them back on an episode by episode basis. I feel like things will be lacking if we get new people and don't get that backstory that was so wonderfully crafted (and then beaten like a dead horse) for the main Losties. Personally, I feel like a decent Faraday or Chopper Pilot (can't think of the name - Lawnmower Man) flashback could be useful. Then again, I've learned to trust Carlton and Cuse. Here's hoping that due to time travel, we will get to see the history of the Island in REAL time. Our Losties stuck on the Island will get to meet and interact with Hanso, the DeGroots, the original Others and the rest of dharma (perhaps even meet Rousseau when she crashes) through the natural course of time (from their perspective) so there will be no need for "flashbacks". How many more days do I have to wait? I'm on tenterhooks.

    Flashback & Flashforwards

    by 4we8have15to16go23back42

Darlton said no more Flashbacks in Season 4 and we still got the Juliet Flashback in The Other Woman and the the Jin Half Flashback in Ji Yeon. So Darlton says no more Flashes, but I would bet that thats over all and that they mix it up one episode this season to supprise us and keep us off guard. They have stated that one of that pre-strike things that were cut was more back story on some of the four frighter people so somehow were going to get their story. I know that they said that Danielles story would be finally told in real time since the island is continually jumping from time to time, but for the freighties I would guess that you would need a flashback.

  • Dec. 31, 2008, 9:48 a.m. CST

    by NeoMyers

I LOVE Lost, don't get me wrong. But there has been only one show crafted by Gods and that show was The Wire. Lost was crafted by a angels or elves or something really good, but not Godly. I still get mad thinking about that Lost S2 ep. "The Hunting Party" when Tom says, "This is our island and the only reason you're living on it is cause we let you." My response (and probably anyone else's)? "OK. Great. We didn't ask to be on this fuckin' island. So you can have it and you can give us a boat so we can get the fuck off then." That's what he SHOULD have said, but instead he whined and bitched and pulled his usual Jack dipshit moves. But I love Lost anyway. Just not as much as The Wire. Omar would run that fuckin' island.

  • Dec. 31, 2008, 10 a.m. CST

The island has to be a spaceship ... doesn't it?

    by unfaithfullyyours

A ship that crashed years and years and years and years ago, and for some reason, uh, floats? Then tress and whatnot grew up on it and made it look like an island. No? Alright, maybe not. But how the fuck does an island time travel? I'll be watching!

  • Dec. 31, 2008, 10:03 a.m. CST

NeoMyers: Agreed that the Wire is pretty fantastic

    by Stormwatcher

and Omar is probably the most satisfying character ever conceived on television but and understand I am the biggest Wire cheerleader I know, Lost just gets me hooked like a crack junky. The Wire I like to let breathe, I;ll watch five episodes then take a couple of months break, go back finish the season ect... I haven't watched the last 5 eps as I am so sad its over I can't bear to do it. Lost though, man, I guess its cuz its escapism. I understand the hate people have for Jack and I am sadly, a big Jack defender, I love that he's a flawed, can't let go, can't accept defeat kinda guy, Jack Bauer is flawless, he can shake addition in 2 hours and can get over Chinese torture programming in 20 minutes but Jack really never changes which is more realistic cuz people never really change. And Locke is so freaking heart breaking, I don't care that he went from tough to whimp cuz I believe that a guy like that, the longer you spend with him, the longer you know him, the more you realize its an act and he is just wanting to be loved, as gay as that sounds. But yeah, McNulty, Omar, Marlo, Bunk, pretty much every black actor on the Wire are note perfect Dickens quality greatness.

  • Dec. 31, 2008, 10:09 a.m. CST

Stormwatcher: I'm a big Locke fan

    by NeoMyers

...which is why Jack pisses me off so much. If Jack would have listened to Locke even 50% of the time, I don't think everyone would be dead and split up and all messed over. Not to say that Locke has made all the right moves, like ALLEGEDLY blowing up the submarine (I still think he faked it somehow). It might just be the case that Terry O'Quinn is the better actor, but I find Locke fascinating. I freaked out when I saw that he's in the coffin. I just hope there's some kind of resurrection when they bring him back. And if a whole island can be transported in time, why can't it bring someone back to life?

    Island moving...

    by Veraxus

I've been saying the island can move through *space and time* since halfway through season 2 (we were given hints that things we saw on the island disappeared in different places around the globe). So yeah, there's the catch.

  • Dec. 31, 2008, 12:12 p.m. CST

NeoMyers, Then you appreciate his love of young men?

    by EvilWizardGlick

Locke has the absolutely gayest subtext of any character on Lost, maybe tv. The FEDS lured Locke with a young male honeypot to trap the dope runners. Locke was known to mainly hang out alone in the jungle with young men and even drug a few. Locke is the only main male character not entranced by Kate. Or any of the other women. But some young guy takes his shirt off and Locke drags him to the deep dark dangerous woods quick as shit through a goose. But it isn't limited to young men. Locke has his eye on Ben and the cabin guy. The island is Lockes fucking gay bathhouse.

by Jaka G4 has been running the series from ep 1 to current (or at least the end of season 3 - not sure yet). I have to admit that I like it more now, or maybe hate it less. I really loved season 1, really hated season 2, kinda hated season 3 and enjoyed season 4 but didn't love it again. I seem to have settled into a more general like of the entire series after having the opportunity to watch in all again in chronological order. I still fully expect and X-Files ending, where everything doesn't get explained and the answers we do get don't fully satisfy. But I'll admit I'm looking forward to seeing that end now.

I don't know if this link ( will go through, or if this has already been reported, but the Paley Center (in NY) is conducting a poll of favorite "Lost" episodes. by meCPS

I've been rewatching on G4 as well, and can tell you that my channel guide info runs far enough ahead that they WILL be showing S4. unfortunately, due to them not showing an episode a day (as was their regular schedule) for these two holiday weeks, they will not get through S4 in time for the ABC start of S5. I wish I had caught this sooner, as I could have DVR'd SciFi's 4 episodes every Monday starting last week, which has somehow inexplicably jumped ahead of G4's schedule, even though they were running way behind G$ only a few weeks ago. Anyway, since you don't seem to have the same love for the show that I do (another damn S3 hater is what you are....) you probably won't mind a gap in that season. So if you get SciFi Channel, just start watching/recording on Monday nights. It looks like they will get through the 16 episode S4 in time for the S5 premiere.

    Thanks meCPS

    by Jaka

My DVR is actually set to record all eps of the show on all channels, I've just been deleting those not on G4. I'll definitely pay more attention now as it was my hope to get the entire series in before S5 started. I may end up loving the show again - I'm still not sure. I was a RABID fan during season one, but it was actually season two that earned my all out hatred. It was just a HUGE let down to me. S3 was actually a little better, but I think I was still recovering from my S2 hatred so I didn't give it a completely fair chance. I came back on board more with S4 and was pretty much loving it again by the end of that season. Like I said, I'm coming around a bit now with getting the chance to watch the entire series in order. I still think they wussed out on a few plot points/characters (such as, I believe hearing that the numbers will never be explained - they spent way to much time on that if that turns out to be true). And yeah, what's with the no ep everyday on G4 right now? That totally bummed me out.

S2 sucked, and they have explained the numbers... just not on screen because evidently it was more important to spend two eps developing Ana-Lucia then kill her off.

Exactly! That STILL annoyed me on re-watching! Did they explain it in the webisodes then? Unfortunately, I think, I haven't watched ANY of those. Anybody know if they're on the DVDs? I think I'm going to go ahead and purchase them at some point. I borrowed them once before but I was still too angry to get through them, so I gave them back.

    the numbers

    by HoboCode

They explained the numbers in the first ARG, but those aren't canon so we don't know if the explanation is true or not. and would you rather they not develop ana-lucia and then kill her off?

    by Mr. Zeddemore

I liked Ana-Lucia, I was just using that as an example to debate the 'oh, we didn't have enough time to tell The Numbers' argument.
The Numbers should be answered on-screen if they're answered at all, I think we can both concur on that. Using an ARG to answer them is annoying because it shows they know what The Numbers mean, but don't want to place them into a canonical approach. So they want to say 'hey, we answered this' without actually having it appear in the one medium where it's actually a true answer.

    by Jaka

Well, lets be honest, they HAVE done that with other characters. But no, I would rather they didn't kill her off at all, or explain why it was necessary. Again, maybe all this will make sense by the end of the series, but I doubt it. Thanks for the heads up on the mobisodes (why are they called that instead of webisodes? and what ar ARGs? sorry if I loose geek cred for both of those questions) And thanks again meCPS. I have a 21" HD monitor, so it's not a problem at all if I need to finish up S4 that way.

"mobisodes" are named thus because they were originally a sponsered deal with Verizon I think, and they were delivered to your mobile device (phone, pda, etc). "ARG"s are the online puzzle games the show has during the season breaks. Clues to start them were featured in mock ads that ran during the final few episodes on ABC each season. People followed these clues online to websites that had puzzle games that gave tidbits of info upon completion. Not sure what "ARG" actually stands for.

    I haven't seen the mobisodes

    by Monkey Butler

But the new guy's gotta be Razinsky, the guy who was in the Hatch with Kelvin who killed himself. We haven't actually seen him, but he's been referenced since S2, and it would make sense if the island's moved back in time.
About the island moving in time, I have a pretty big problem with that. I'm no scientist, but surely if the island moved in time there'd be an overlap, because they'd both be occupying the same spacetime. We saw the island disappear, which means that it was physically (not the right word, but you get what I mean) moved, so where exactly did it go? This isn't something like when Desmond's consciousness went back in time, this is an island, with people and buildings and stuff on it. Not to mention the fact that if there are two overlapping islands existent in the past, only the 'past' island should disappear when Ben throws the switch - the 'future' island should still be there. Maybe I need a physicist to explain all this, because it sure as hell doesn't make sense to me.

Let's make sure you all got the point of Season 4

    by Dapper Swindler

I feel like the message of Season 4 was Lost on some people. The show was about Jack vs Locke. Jack's science vs Locke's faith. Their constant debate back and forth. It finally culminated in the greenhouse. They finally agreed to disagree but Locke told Jack about the lie he had to keep if he left the island.
Now, we found out who won the debate that the whole show was built around - Locke. When Jack saw that island vanish before his eyes he realized he was wrong. He did a complete 180. He realized Locke was right all along. The first thing he said after that was that we have to lie - just as Locke instructed. And when Locke visited him as Jeremy Bentham - that really messed him up. Jeremy said bad things happened on the island because he left. And now Jack believed every word of it. That's why he felt they had to go back. Because he believes Locke now. The island vanishing was a huge turning point for Jack.

He brags about having Sex with tons of women, but I'd like to see him act like a real man and stay in a committed relationship over a long period of time. Usually when someone brags like that its to compensate for something that they lack in their life. I feel sorry for you EvilWizardGlick.

    by Jaka

Interesting, both points. As a big, big, BIIIIIIG Star Trek fan, I have to say I'm always nervous about time travel plots and generally, I think most fail. Dapper, I got most of that while watching, but not all of it - very nice insight. So, if the island went back in time, and that's what happened to Des as well, does that mean that everyone will have "glimpses"? That would be pretty weak sauce. Even if those remaining on the island had awareness of said movement, still weak sauce. I don't really see a problem with those off the island knowing the island moved. But did it really go back in time? Did Des? I've always assumed that Des just, ya know, teleported or something (which is to say, moved). As you can see, I'm not a religious viewer, and I'm definitely learning more than I ever did before during my currect re-watching of the show.

Yeah, the framing of stories on Lost has always been incredible. In the Season 3 finale, you see Jack all messed up and saying we need to go back, but you don't know why. Through the S4 flash forwards, you start to get an idea. Seeing his dad's ghost, issues with Hurley, issues with Kate. But none of that really explains why he needs to go back and what would really mess him up so badly. It isn't until the S4 finale that you get the final pieces - the conversation with Locke at the greenhouse, the island vanishing, and Locke in the coffin (and what Locke told Jack). Like you said I'm not really revealing anything you didn't already know, just clarifying it. What's great about Lost is sometimes you know the answers before you KNOW the answers. Then when you rewatch it, all the subtle things start making sense.

    by meCPS

Will Mathoper (Ethan) is listed as appearing in the first couple episodes, so you probably did see him. Also, I suspect that the major detail about the island moving in time (mentioned in the invisotext) is that the island did not move to a specific time, but is now moving in time. That would explain why the commercial teasers have shown us not only old-time DHARMA people (circa 30 years ago) but also the Nigerian drug plane almost running down Locke (a much more recent event in the island's history). It also should silence the haters who found the "frozen donkey wheel" device a ridiculous way to "move the island". I finally realized what it reminded me's excatly the kind of apparatus that an old ship would employ to wind up the anchor chain. Ben has, in effect, hoisted the isldnad's temporal anchor, and set it adrift in time. Probably the amin reason it will be so hard to get back.

Yep. I doubled up & checked the previews again & it is indeed him...personally...I think that's gonna be one of the more fantastic aspects of the show. It'd be nice if they essentially gave them all shots at redemption...Others, Tailies, & the Beach bodies. Already know that Anna Lucia's coming back somehow...Libby too...& I can't wait to find out just what the hell is up with Jack's pappy in full & am really REALLY hoping that he's either part of or a financial backer/founder of the Initiative. I'm often amazed at how fickle the fans of the show can be. At the end of every season I've been going back through the episodes & the mobi-sodes & trying to piece a bulk of questions together...& I'm still amazed at how the show flows so well. The FDW was indeed the shit & I felt like it was also a bit similar to part of a ship or something that you'd see a bunch of slaves (ala the Black Rock) powering & by the middle of the season I think that things are gonna get a lot more interesting as far as the ole' boat & what not goes. I really think that Richard is going to end up being an integral part of the mythology & will probably be one of the stranded Black Rockers or something of the sort. I'd love it if the journal was written by him or if he's a Hanso decendent or something of the sort. The journal's gonna end up being something serious I think...the one that Widmore spent the bank on. Gotta say in the end that Jack, Ben, Dez, & Richard are what do it for me the most on the show. I'll be shocked if it all doesn't boil down to Jack being the caretaker of the dirt in the end...truthfully...I'd be damned disappointed if it were otherwise...that being said...I won't lump myself into fickleness by honoring a statement like that. Let the chips fall where they may & I'll be happy.

But the VE is like saying Hurley winning the lottery "explains" the numbers, the equation just seems like one more manifestation of the Numbers, and the truth behind them is something much higher up. I honestly don't think we'll ever get a concrete explanation answer of what they are. I think the best we'll ever get is someone finally making a comment that 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42 seem to pop up a lot and that we'll never know what that means. I could be wrong though, it seemed like they had almost completely abandoned the Numbers the second S2 ended, but then they brought them all back in the S4 finale.

    Lost and the Space-Time continuum.

    by greenstyle92

I love lost talkbacks. They are my favorite ones. I love the big ideas spewed forth in them to explain things. Now, I haven’t been keeping up with spoilers or previews. I prefer to go in “fresh.” But, some of the things I’ve been reading, (seeing Dharma guys alive again, seeing the drug plane crash) reminds me of something I learned in College a few years ago regarding the relationship of Space and Time from an organizational stand point and how they may once have been the same thing.

Okay, to understand this, let’s talk about how “space” and “time” are different in how the organize points. We’ll use three points: A,B,and C. In “Time,” 3 points, A, B, and C, are organized in a strictly sequential manner. Think of 3 days. Monday MUST come first, the Tuesday MUST follow, then Wednesday MUST follow after that. It is impossible to mix up the order, and have Tuesday come before Monday. It is impossible to have the points go B, A, C, or C, B, A or C, A, B, or what have you. It must be A, B, C. It must be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Right?

Now let’s think about “Space.” Three points in Space. A, B, and C. In space, A, B, and C are NOT strictly sequential. Think of three lawn chairs you’ve arranged in a triangle in your backyard, and have labeled A, B, and C. They exist simultaneously, and you are not bound to sit in them in the strict A, B, and C order. You could, but you could just as easily sit in them in B, A, C, or C, B, A, or C, A, B, or what have you. Spatially, there is no first, or last, or specific order. It could be in any order.

Thus, the difference between Space and Time. Time is arranged sequentially, and Space is arranged, well, spatially. But here’s where things get interesting.

It is theorized that Space and time did not fully form at the instant of the big bang. True, Space and time did become fully formed very quickly after the big bang, (less than one second,) but there was a brief moment after the big bang before Space and Time were fully formed. In that moment, there was something known as “Space-Time,” or Time and Space were essentially the same thing. What exactly does that mean? It might mean that “Time” behaved more like “Space.” As in, Time didn’t have a strict sequential order. Points A, B, and C all existed in Time simultaneously, but could be visited or perceived or what have you out of order, allowing for B, A, C and the others to be possible. Tuesday, then Monday then Wednesday. You could experience these days in any order you wished. (well, theoretically. Again, this state existed for less than one second.)

But I always thought it was a neat idea and would make for a great science fiction story, if someone could make time behave like space again. And I think that’s what lost may be doing on the island.

How would this work? These previews seem to be giving some idea. You could “travel through time” as easily as you could walk across your yard. In the one sense, as you walk across the island, you may see different parts of it in different times. You could see the Black Rock runaground, (however THAT happened,) you could walk and see Dharma at it’s height, you could catch Rousseau giving birth, and all that. Still though, that’s a simplistic way of viewing it. That’s like saying all the key moments in the Island’s history happen simultaneously in Space-Time. No. ALL moments of the island’s history would happen in space time. You could walk up to the Dharma initiative site and see it in full swing. You could walk up to it again and see it ruined. You could walk up to it again and see it as it was before Dharma came to the island. (One wonders if there’s a way to “will” what time frame you are viewing and area.)

Then there’s the matter that causality as we know it would begin to break down. In Time, it’s not just that A happens then B happens then C happens. It’s also that A causes B and B causes C. In the merged Space-Time though, where Time is like Space, this would get wacky. A would still cause B and B would still cause C, but it’s possible that C could then in turn cause A, and C could Influence B, and B causes C AND A. The Drug plane could directly influence Dharma. Dharma could meddle with the Black Rock. The Black Rock could shelter (or harm) Roussue. There are many and varied weirdness associated with this.

And what about death? Would the effect bring the “dead” back to life? Well, Yes and No. It would make “Death” less meaningful at least. Let’s think about Ana Lucia. She died. In Space-Time, she would still die at the moment Michael shot her, which we’ll call point D, (D for Death.) She still dies at point D. But, the frame of time she was on the Island and alive would be more meaningful. Because, during that time, she could experience things before point D, (A, B, C) and experience things AFTER point D, (E, F, G, etc.) From a continuity stand point, it would seem as though people don’t die or come back after they die, but in actuality no true Lazarus-esque resurrection has taken place.

Anyway, if this is the direction Lost is going in, well, that seems pretty cool. I may repost this after the premier in that talkback if I deem it still relevant.

    Ben and the Orchid

    by Youguysgotanymilk

Based on the previews they have shown and the fact that we see Dharma people and Yemmi's plane it appears (as mentioned above) that the island is jumping around and not just staying in one time. This could be cause by when Ben threw all the metal junk into the machine in the Orchid even after the video told him not to.
Maybe the donkey wheel moves the island to a specific time but Ben fried its circuts by throwing that metal stuff in, causing the time travel device to be an the fritz.
Now basically, we will be getting a sort of "Greatest Hits" of Lost events played out in real time.
My hopes are for the purge, the hostiles, the building of the statue, Radzinsky, etc. There are so many events I would like to see.
