We knew it was coming... Fox aims to halt WATCHMEN's release...
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. We don't typically follow legal crap here and we've already made the exception on WATCHMEN because it might affect the release date.
Now Fox's lawyers have officially said they're asking to stop the release. It was always speculation, but they're legally asking for it now and they may get it. The AP article also has a comment from Warners saying they want a trial (set now for January 20th) and don't believe Fox owns the rights they are claiming to and says a settlement isn't an option for them at the moment.
Of course, this could all be political horse manure, posturing by both sides so they can work on a settlement... who knows, but it's the latest bit of information on the case, which now looks to be trying to derail the release. If Warners doesn't budge and Fox keeps its word, we might not be seeing Watchmen come March.
I don't think we're going to cover ever twist and turn this thing takes, but this seemed to be a major revelation to me about Fox's intentions or, at the very least, how much hardball they're preparing to play.

I enjoyed the book and I think it could be a great movie but the non-geeks aren't getting it. It won't be a date movie and within a week a more mainstream movie will be able to knock it down to number 6.

I kind of want Fox to stop the Watchmen. I never think they should have made it. Never should have given it Snyder. Never should have cast the black of charisma that is Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Never should have made it look EXACTLY like the comic book (hey look fanboys it's an EXACT panel by panel recreati...zzzzzzzzzzzzz). I'm sure it's just hard ball to take a serious chunk of change from WB. But wouldn't it be fascinating if they did actually kill the movie? I wouldn't cry. Sorry. And while you're at it...if you could kill the Suspiria remake, the Birds remake, and the Crow remake...thanks. Usually Fox sucks. We hate you Tom. But this time, the dickhead is doing something I like. Even if it's for the wrong reasons.

If you think Fox is acting on anything other than the thought process of a 3 year old who hasn't learned how to share, then you're in complete denial. Fox will try everything it can to stop this movie from happening; it will get shelved, and then fox will try to make its own version. I agree with a boycott. I love Wolverine. I collected every Wolverine comic from the early 80's to the mid 90's and would still be willing to boycott that movie because of this bullshit. Fox has been spewing out shit after shit and passing it off as entertainment just to collect out ten dollars. We keep giving it to them. We should boycott just to stop these jackoffs from shitting onto 35mm film and calling it a movie. Boycott all these out of touch assholes. Fuck Hollywood. Go independent.

I remember at the Dark Knight midnight showing, someone in the theater made a joke after the Watchmen trailer that it should go directly to video and tons of people laughed. I commented to the guy sitting next to me in a JUSTICE LEAGUE t-shirt that it was exciting to see it coming to the screen and he said "well, those were cool special effects at least..." He had no idea what Watchmen was. I just don't see this movie (is that the one with the naked blue guy?) catching on with the mainstream. But I hope I'm wrong about that.

It may be just negotiating malarky, but at one point they have to admit "nah, we're just joshin' you now cough up the $$$" I've yet to hear this, and it has me worried that maybe fox really does just want to prevent this film from being released for whatever reason.

Fox wants to release the Batman TV show on DVD. Warners doesn't want the campy series to "tarnish" the Nolan franchise. This is according to some comics professionals with word on the inside.

Because people don't like good stories? Please. Geeks don't have a monopoly on quality. In fact, I know PLENTY of people who are interested in this who haven't even picked up a comic book in their lives. Which is as good a reference point as "people in the theater I were in laughed when someone made a joke about it." If the movie is good, and it has a solid marketing campaign, then it will succeed. Plain and simple. I'll be bummed as all hell if Fox blocks the release of this movie, even if I don't believe they will actually go through with it. So here's to hoping they can all stop being dicks and work something out like human beings.

I'm pissed about this too, but legally Fox is in the right. I remember Moriarty ran a column here once about copyright law being sacrosanct. WB stole somebody else's property, it's not much different than piracy. Obviously Fox generally churns out unadulterated shit, has sat on this project for over a decade, and WB seems proud of the movie they've made. So, you could say artistically that WB is in the right, but legally? No way.

HA! That was one of the DVDs I picked up this year at Cheapo.
I had NO idea what it was whatsoever but it looked cool as hell though. Haven't had time to watch it yet because all my stuff are in boxes, but it just got really high on my must-watch-soon dvd list. -
Rent it, watch it with a buttload of friends, wait for it to air on the F/X channel,
BUT DO NOT PAY MONEY TO SEE IT IN THEATERS.

A) It's going to come out. Too much money on the line, WB and Fox are playing chicken.
B) Everything WATCHMEN is, all the important thematic elements...was covered in THE DARK KNIGHT. The nature of heroism, check. The cause of heroism pushing a good man over the line, check. Heroism forcing a good man to bereviled and hunted by the very world he tries to protect, check. it's all there. Not only that, it was done the right way. Here we have a property that, for once, was able to make superheroes believable in the "real world," and they go and make it look like a damn video game.
C) None of you will go through with your stupid boycott, so quit whining about it. -

It may very well benefit Fox more if this film is shelved for good. Warner Bros sunk quite a bit of money into this movie, and is banking on at least 100 million in revenue from it. In the current financial climate, a sunk blockbuster that not only tanks, but makes NO money could very well put a studio under. Compare the few million Fox stands to make if this is all settled out of court compared to the billions it stands to make if it bankrupts a rival studio. Machiavellian shit right there.

Hey guys, I just checked an article on wikipedia concerning this, and according to it Fox claims to have contacted Warner Brothers back in 2005, and formally filed suit in February of this year advising WB of what was up. Granted wikipedia could be wrong, but if that's not the case it does take some sting out of the Fox waiting to the last minute argument.

And it's completely assinine to think that WB feels that the TV show would "tarnish" the Nolan franchise in any way. WB has no problem selling those piece of shit Schumacher Batman movies. Why would a campy television show from over 40 years ago have more of an effect on Nolan's movies than Schumacher's crapfests? It wouldn't. -
The right that is under dispute is the right to DISTRIBUTE people. WB was fully in the right (as it were) to make this film. What they failed to do was pay off Fox with a million dollars so they would not pursue the idiocy which unfolds before us now.
I for one will be dismayed beyond belief if this film is not released on schedule; my life is a black ball of crap as it is: I can't find a decent, paying job, the one gig I have is a deferred contract - which means I have no idea when they will pay me. What I was holding onto was the notion that next year I would be graced with quality escapist fare to forget about my impending homelessness. But is that happening now? Lord knows.
Fox is in the right, sort of. The fact of the matter is, they did not file the complaint until it was almost too late, and legally that's a problem.
Not that it matters now. I hate this lifetime; wish I could just go to the Karma Coatroom and get a new one. -

As someone mentioned in one of the other talkbacks on this subject, WB did NOT steal anybody else's property. Warner Brothers has always owned The Watchmen. FOX is simply claiming that it still has the rights to distribute the film. Semantics, some may cry, but the The Watchmen has always been the property of WB.

You, of course, are right and I probably should not have used such harsh language as "theft." However, the fact remains that legally the film cannot be shown without Fox's permission. This fact also takes some of the sting out of the accusation that Fox "sat on the property for 20 years" if it was never their property to produce in the first place. I'm not fan of Rothman or Murdoch either, but had Fox decided they wanted to distribute a film version of the Watchmen, and so decided to produce a film version of the Watchmen without Warner Bros permission, I'm not so sure WB's response would be much different.

It stems from the studios' differing interpretations of Fox's "changed elements" clause.
Warner Bros. says that Fox has repeatedly failed to exercise its rights over various incarnations of the production. Through producer Lawrence Gordon, Fox had bought the rights to the graphic novel in 1986. Fox alleges that when the project went into turnaround in 1994, a separate 1991 deal that transferred some of the rights to Gordon still gave them the option of retaining distribution and sequel rights to the film, and a share of the profits should it be made by any other studio. Fox's interpretation of the 1994 turnaround deal also meant that Gordon would not fully control the rights until the studio's development costs (estimated by Fox at $1 million) had been reimbursed. Despite originally passing on the project, Fox also alleged that its agreement with Gordon contained a "changed elements" clause, meaning that if Gordon changed any of the key creative personnel on the film, Fox would have first option on participation. The studio said that Gordon did not inform them of Snyder's joining the production in 2005.
Warner Bros. began developing Watchmen in 2005. Fox alleges that it contacted Warner Bros. before production began and told the studio that it had violated Fox's 1991 and 1994 deals with Gordon. Warner Bros. claimed that it was originally unaware of either deal, and that in 2005 Fox had declined to produce the Hayter screenplay that formed the basis of the production, *thereby negating the "changed elements" clause*. Warner Bros. also claimed that the 1994 deal did not cover distribution rights and had conferred upon Gordon all the rights he needed to take the film to Warner Bros. -

well - here's my take. The 'squid' ending was shocking when written. The problem is - we live in a world where an enormous tragedy has taken place in New York - and the ending of WATCHMEN has been known for over 20 years. I think the filmmaker challenge of adaptation is to raise the SHOCK level of what Ozy does, my understanding is that's been done. Whether or not that involves an enormous CG creature that just lays there dead creating a psychic traumatic event would translate for a larger scale audience... Ultimately - Zach has stuck so precise to so much of the original book and intent, that playing with that event that Ozy enacts is understandable and I look forward to seeing what exactly it all comes down to being.

I just really wanted to see that thing on the big screen, it'd could've been so fuckin epic. And say what you will, Watchmen was always about it's own structure, without the squid it all just falls apart. What we may get probably will be a great comicbook movie, but that's all it'll be.

From what I've read/heard, there's the possibility that Ozymandias' backstory has been omitted, so that rather than portraying a man pursuing an epic goal spanning centuries, he's simply a misguided Bond villain. If the ending from Hayter's draft is what's in there, its going to diminish the most interesting character. On top of that, at ComicCon the actor mentioned Ozy is "another gay" character in his career, which I've never gotten from the story. These changes concern me most - that spectacle will overtake the emotional complexities that made this story resonate.

I mean, I want a good Watchmen adaptation... but I don't have any faith left that Snyder didn't already FUBAR it with his "new and improved for joe sixpack" approach to the actual story... so I'm not even going to fork over any cash to suffer through another thoroughly mediocre Moore adaptation in the theater... but, at the same time, anyone involved with FOX deserves to be repeatedly disemboweled for eternity in the 9th circle of Hell, and so I am rooting for the WB to win this case just out of pure loathing and spite for those asshats Rothman and Murdoch... though I have to admit that I kind of want the movie's release to be postponed just because a compromised version of Watchmen should not be allowed to exist... but then I also want any Watchmen movie to be a roaring success just to piss off the obnoxious anti-Watchmen-fan trolls that skulk around these talkbacks just because they've got nothing better to do. I personally think WATCHMEN is a great story much like V. There are elements wrote way back then that still ring very true today, especially if you pay close attention to the paper headlines.
I hope we do get to see WATCHMEN, and I make no bones I hate FOX as much as the free thinking rational man... so call me biased but I hope FOX bites it big... Look at the similarities between FOX and OZY, the giant squid is staring us in the face. -

Fox Searchlight Pictures, Fox 2000 Pictures, Fox Atomic, Fox Faith, 20th Century Fox Television, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Fox Movie Channel, FX, National Geographic Channel, SPEED Channel would be a start. And if you really wanted to take the boycott to the extreme, you could boycott any film filmed using Fox facilities.

I'd love to see something like this happen. It'd have to be more than talkbacks though.. it'd have to make its way through other movie sites and, (of course), any & all comic retailers.
One of the problems is that Wolverine isn't a viable target. Watchmen is due to open in March, Wolvie in May. Any threat against it is just that.. a threat. If the goal is to get Watchmen released on time, another movie (or movies) with sooner release dates would have to be the targets.. only Fox doesn't exactly have any "tentpoles" coming up. -
Lawrence Gordon FUCKED UP by not executing his buy out option with Fox. Right now, FOX is in a really shitty situation. They've had the single worst executive team in modern film history make turd after turd. Their release slate has been abysmal, with their only strength being their marketing arm which continues to sell shit like Big Macs. Rumors are swirling that they're set for a big shake up at Fox. MEANWHILE - this suit was a no-brainer for them. When you're in your legal rights you protect our property with the utmost - I find it astonishing that Gordon was taking this property around with this monkey on his back - and that anyone made this movie without closing that door. It goes without saying that this movie would have been an unbelievable disaster had it been developed by Rothman, truly the most worthless executive in Hollywood history. That they're trying to tear it down like this - just makes one so incredibly pissed.
BOYCOTTS don't work with FOX - you shouldn't want to see any of their movies till THE INCREDIBLE MR FOX and AVATAR late next year. WOLVERINE will be a disaster - the fighting on that film was far more spectacular off camera - and Rothman's shitprints will be all over it. At this point I'm just waiting for FOX to implode, that won't affect this case - and whatever happens with this case won't save Rothman & crew. If I was the judge in the case, I'd rule that FOX has the right to pay 30% of the marketing and production of WATCHMEN and take an equal stake in the film - and then see if Fox had the sack to take a shared risk in the resulting product. But that's probably just me. -

Didn't especially get into the graphic novel, so not especially looking forward to the film. If someone other than Zack "Xerox" Snyder were making it, then maybe. No, what interests me far more is the furore that this potential delay is whipping up, especially given that I have met only one person, that's 1, in the whole of the UK who is excited about this film. Seriously, even among the geek community, who actually believes this film will in any way surprise them, or in fact do anything other than mollify or disappoint? I call "Bullshit" too. Not at Fox. At The Watchmen.

Yesterday's protest suggestion was to send photos of "Tricky Dick" himself, Fmr. President Nixon, along with dildos, pics of dicks, people sucking and eating dicks, etc. I want to amend that. The Warner Brothers Lawyers want it to go to trial because they know that a group full of every day people are not going to fall for such bullshit. Does Fox have the rights to Watchmen? From what I have read, yes they do. Did Fox let Warner Brothers go ahead and make the movie without letting them know they still had the rights? Yes they did.
Warner Brothers is in the right and Fox is being greedy and any jury will see right through that.
If any of the Warner Brothers Lawyers are reading this than realize that The Watchmen was never really a well known comic. I grew up reading comics and saw it every now and then in a comic book story but nobody ever talked about it. I love watching comic book movies in Theaters but, I will probably waite for this one on DVD but, it just pisses me off when some people aka Fox act arrogant.
Fox and the other studios had a big problem putting there faith into comic book movies. Even after the first Marvel hit:Blade came out it took several years for the next big comic movie to get the green light.
My point is that even the mainstream well known comics were being dissed by the studios for decades even though the studios had rights to them.
Here comes Watchmen that isn't on the level of X-Men or Spider-Man. FOX WOULD HAVE NEVER TOOK THE RISK AND MADE THAT INTO A MOVIE FOR ANOTHER DECADE. Yeah, other graphic novels like Sin City and 300 were big hits. But, so was Blade and Superman and it still took years for hollywood to make other comic book movies. So, fox cannot use that as an excuse. Now that that images of the film have come out and a great Director has pulled it off than Fox now wants it back.
20th Century Fox is like a spoiled child that throws it's ball and does not care if another kid picks it up and starts playing with it. Then when the other kid really starts to have fun with the ball the original kid/Fox then screams that he wants the ball back.
I hope it does go to trial. Any jury in it's right mind are going to side with Warner Brothers. FOX THINKS THAT PEOPLE ARE STUPID WELL, THEY ARE NOT.
Fox should have just done the fair thing and said they own part of the rights and asked for 20% of DVD profits and left Warner Brothers alone. A dumb arrogant judge may fall for it but, a jury (full of every day people) are never going to fall for such B.S. Even if the law is on Fox's side a Jury can still throw fox to the wolves just like they recently did O.J. Simpson. -
I don't know who started this war but FOX and the WB HATE each other. I don't know where this began but with the Batman DVD's (which would sell millions, its geek catnip), the Dukes of Hazzard fight, the Bryan Singer steal, and now Watchmen, its obivious they both just want to fuck the other.

Again, I could care less about the Watchmen graphic novel or the movie. But, it is bullshit on what Fox is doing.
If Fox wanted to make it into a movie than they would have done so already.
Even after Spiderman, Blade, X-Men and hit after comic book hit came out the studios still took there time in making more comic book movies. So, Marvel had to start financing it's own movies to get things rolling. Marvel even said that they worked to get back rights to alot of there characters because the studios were letting those characters collect dust.
If this was happening with huge Marvel characters like Ironman and Thor. Than imagine what a lesser known comic like Watchmen was treated like at Fox. Fox was never going to make it into a movie for years or decades and they know. They lawyers for Warner Brothers can use all this info and etc. -

Fox's behavior is just unacceptable. They could have surely just informed Warner Bros. beforehand, but obviously waited to see what they'd come up and then maybe pounce on it to get "their" share. Some sort of legal ruling SHOULD take into account the unethical and obviously planned move by Fox rather than simply taking this from a who owns what. Fox should have protested the making of the movie and because they didn't it means they are looking to make an unethical profit. Despicable.

Even if all the paper work is on Fox's side a Jury is still not going to fall for all that b.s. People here are voicing their desires without a real grasp of the details of the contracts. Let the legal system sort out the bullshit. In the meantime, there is no reason for a judge to grant Fox's desire to hold the release. Such a thing is done if allowing the release to proceed would cause damage - here I think it clear that the damage will be far greater if the movie is NOT released on time. If the film is released and distributed by WB, and the judge rules in Fox's favor, then WB can just fork over the cash Fox is entitled to.

Had this been Plastic Man, and Fox had distribution rights or whatever it is they have, and the WB made the movie, no one would give a shit. No one gives a damn about Plastic Man. It would be a nice family comedy, with a decent box office turnout, and eventually be sold as a 2 for 1 pack with the Shazam movie at walmart years down the line. But, Watchmen is like the holy grail and 10 commandments of comic books. Even if it looked like it was going to be shit, even if it had early bad reviews, people would still turn out for it and it would make its money back. Fox knows this. They're upset that they didn't get to put out a piece of shit movie, make it look nice ans shiny and pimp it to the public, and then watch their ho bring in the money. Artistic integrity vs. business acumen. It's really that simple. In a touchy-feely, emo-artistic world, Fox would have put their foot down the second that somebody else started fucking with their property. But Fox isn't suing for distribution.It's pretty simple. Gordon never went back to Fox, at any point, with any incarnation of this project, whether it was Rothman, Mechanic or Chernin in charge. If you read the initial deal that gave the rights to Gordon/Largo, you can see it was something done out of deference to his former executive position. If that wasn't enough, the 90's revision gave more leeway to Gordon to get another studio on board. The revision was Fox's way of saying "we'll fund your movie if it's reasonable. If not, you can take it to someone else who will". It was not, as portrayed, as Fox's way of keeping the project mired down.Gordon could have ended this mess very simply even after Snyder was on board; have Zach write the entire goddamn thing as one huge script, take it to Rothman and say we're shooting a trilogy. Rothman wouldn't have funded the damn thing, and because the contract states that Fox had no creative control over what Gordon brought them, the answer would have been yes or no. So no matter what they said, WB would have been involved because the price tag would have made Fox actively search for a partner to split P&A or Gordon would have been on his merry way.There's one bad guy here, and he's been playing AICN like a harp for years.

Singer cast Scott and Jean 15 years apart in age. Singer had Rasputin speak American English in a throwaway role. Singer reduced Rogue to a screaming little girl. Singer played the almost Catholic priest Wagner as a self-mutilating pagan. I'm a comic and movie geek, but I am also understanding enough to know that source material should be respected if the film does not suffer because of it.
By your logic then if a director and his/her team try hard enough to respect the source material, but the film looks completely horrible, that makes it a better film?
So Raimi's Spider-Man should have been able to develop a web-creating chemical in his bedroom, that has the tensile strength as demonstrated on the screen, but he's still in High School?
Continuing with Spider-Man, should the Green Goblin have been an elf looking creature with a purple Santa hat? Would that have been better?
There are occasions when updating the source material is necessary, sometimes not. But thinking I would agree with ANY change is silly, just like me thinking you'd like any or all of those changes above (at least I hope you don't). -
It seems like it would be in Warner's best interest to publicize the crap out of this case. Not that geeks complaining will change Fox's position, but controversy and news coverage may turn this into a big summer movie when it does get released (which I'm sure it will).
In fact, the lawsuit may make millions for Fox, and even more millions for Warner. Both might come out ahead. -
Not because of their case (they actually might be in the right) but in how shitty they brought this shit up. They could of stopped it, when it was first announced, they could of stopped it when it was in Pre-Production. Hell, they could have stopped it when they began filming, or even yet, during post-production. They decided to pull this shit when it was locked, and they realized the that not only was this movie highly anticipated, but WB might have actually did something they couldn't do(for last 20 years) - make a good looking WATCHMEN movie.
Now, anyone with somewhat of a brain knows that, this was the plan all along. Have someone make a movie they couldn't, then snatch it away. This is a douche move, and I hope WB battles it out - even if it means it never see's the light of day.
Overall, I think we will see a settlement, cause FOX won't be able to handle the backlash, that's about to commence. The cocksuckers! -

This isn't an assault against Warner Bros. by Fox, this is Fox' attempt to better corner the super hero market in regard to controlling these comic book properties in film. Warner's response should be 1) Stop selling licenses for their comic book properties to other film companies. 2) Immediately move to counter Fox in regard to The X-Men and Fantastic Four. 3) I would move to attempt to get the future rights for the X-Men and the Fantastic Four when Fox loses control of them. 4) Warner needs to place its own character catalogue into full power in terms of beefing up and going after Fox' largely uncontested claim on dominating the super hero film. Time to make a Legion Of Super Heroes film, a Justice League movie, a Doom Patrol, and even a The Authority film. The Authoriy is the prime property among them, one that reminds one of Watchmen. If indeed Warner is in danger of losing the court case over The Watchmen, they can place the film on the shelf and launch The Authority as a Hard R rated film, one designed to take its place. I'd probably quickly revamp the Justice League script for that purpose...and use it for an Authority film--a film that I would place on the fast track. 5) Warner should humiliate Fox by seeking out the rights to release future Star Wars films. I would pay George Lucas top dollar to release the original trilogy and the prequels in 3D and IMAX, depending on his agreeing on producing, and allowing, Warner to release a new, and 3rd, Star Wars Trilogy, etc.As for Fan Boys And Fan Girls, it is time that we boycott Fox and its films!!! Boycott Wolverine and any new X-Men films, spin offs, etc. The Fox attack on Warner Bros., ultimately, is a manipulative attack on you, the fans, crushing your hopes and dreams!!! If Fox legitimately thought they had a case, they should have filed it, in respect to The Watchmen as soon as Warner announced their intentions to make the film in the first place. This issue is wholly about Fox trying to delay Warner Films' resurgence in the super hero market, and their fear that a Hard R film like Watchmen will be sure to undermine The X-Men as a franchise. Make a website. Include why you are boycotting fox, what it would take for you to end the boycott. Be mature about it and reasonable. Don't just tell them to eat dicks. Understand that Fox is in the legal right and state specifically what it would take for you to end the boycott.
List every movie and tv show you are avoiding as part of the boycott. Have members sign their name under each of these tv shows and movies they have avoided as part of the boycott. List the number of people who signed after each avoided movie and tv show and let the suits and fox figure out how much the loss is. Update the website with news articles related to the case.
That's my opinion about how effective you can make the boycott. Unfortunately, every one of us, including myself, is too damn lazy to do all that work. -
The "Batman" TV series was produced in the 1960s, by Fox. At the time no one had any idea that syndication rights would ever be an issue, let alone DVD rights. So, while DC owns the character of Batman, et al, they don't own the 1966 TV show. And don't kid yourselves, this is a bone of contention between the two. A few years ago, for example, Mike Allred had to redraw the cover for his DC book "Solo" because the Batman depicted thereon looked, to WB, too much like Adam West.

I'm not trying to be a troll, I like WATCHMEN, but it's (1) too long and (b) has no stars in it. I think it will tank like SPEED RACER or THE GOLDEN COMPASS did, unfortunately. (although I should note that TGC did quite well internationally, and with DVD sales and merchandising rights included, should at least break even. But still, there won't be a GOLDEN COMPASS franchise now because it didn't fufill expectations.)

The next major Fox release is the revenge flick Taken. On opening day across the country people need to buy up tickets and then refuse to leave. Alert the media and issue statements that Fox is threatening to take Watchmen away from the general public through their brazen and greedy actions. WB may be in the wrong. In that case, Fox should sell the rights to WB. Fox needs to be boycotted because they REFUSE to negotiate. They are doing nothing but trying to halt the release of the film. The boycott should not be done out of anger, but to send a clear message that we want Fox to negotiate and reach a satisfying conclusion for both parties.

If you organize a bunch of film geeks to sell out first day screenings to the Fox release Taken say on opening day or the following Saturday, then alert the press and refuse to leave the theatre until escorted out, you might get picked up in the press. You make a statement about Fox's actions threatening to take away Watchmen from the fans who want to see it and the need for the situation to be resolved immediately. Perhaps threaten future boycots and then be done with it. The important thing isn't whether or not Fox corporate aren't greedy or whether they're in their rights. The important thing is Watchmen doesn't get it's release date pushed back and it doesn't get altered. WB and Fox can suck it. Organize something that defends the movie itself.

There still has to be an examination of the four-factor test, including whether Fox will be substantially harmed if an injunction does not issue and whether WB will be substantially harmed by the issuance of an injunction among others. In the present case, I believe WB has a strong argument that FOX can be fully compensated through monetary compensation and that WB will be substantially harmed if an injunction issues.

Those of you thinking this movie won't appeal to the general public- I'm not a nerd at all, I've had sex at least two times in my life and go to the gym once or twice every two weeks. whatever WB offered Fox as settlement wasn't enough. Fox wants something big and WB can't exactly claim poverty with The Dark Knight making nearly a billion dollars. Saying that I think Fox shouldn't push their luck on this. If I was WB I'd put together an online distribution deal and tell Fox to back off or they'll give the movie away for free. Segment the thing and put it out as chapters just like the comic. They can get someone like Vimeo or Youtube to host the thing and make all manner of advertising capitol... It'd be awesome if they were willing to take no money just to be able to tell Fox to go take a flying leap. Anyway they'll bicker back and forth until they find a number that both sides can deem a win-win. Then the spinning will commence Fox will express how the film truly fulfills a spectacular vision and blah blah. WB will say that they were happy to include Fox in the fantastic story blah blah... Hell, the only negotiating tack that's probably already set is what the press releases will look like after its all over.

ironically, if Fox doesn't push this envelope, they won't stand a chance of gaining anything via the courts or an arbitrator in the end. It's just like keeping your copyright when you feel it's being infringed upon - the only way you keep your rights to the material is if you pursue it, whether you really intend to take it to the fullest extent of the law or not. Hopefully this posturing will lead to a satisfactory compromise between the two studios (sounds like WB will likely have to fork over something) and the movie will still be released in march.

How many people can you get on board? 1,000? 10,000? You'll never get a large enough percentage of the population to go along with a boycott; no matter how hard you try, you'd never get a big enough percentage for it to hurt a multi-billion dollar conglomerate's bottom line. I received the Watchmen graphic novel for Christmas and have just gotten to Chapter 3. I'm enjoying the book a lot and look forward to seeing the movie, whenever it is released. How come Fox didn't start any of this litigation when WB started pre-production or filming? They just wanted to have WB foot the bill then take them to court for distribution money. Screw 'em.

Right now, while it still looks like Watchmen is coming out in March, I will keep my protests to a minimum. But , if Fox dares do anything to push back the release, then I will personally skip EVERYTHING they are connected to in 2009. This hurts because I am such a fan of X-Men and had been looking forward to the Wolverine movie as well as James Cameron's new flick Avatar. There are even some movies from last year I wanted on DVD (I kinda liked Mirrors and wanted to see what the 15 minutes of lost footage was to Babylon A.D. that American filmgoers did not get to see). But like I say, if Fox does halt the release, I will not give them business of any fucking kind next year. If this goes through, as far as I'm concerned, Star Trek will start the summer movie going season NOT FUCKING WOLVERINE! And to the talkbacker near the top that hoped Watchmen would get pushed back, I hope that Hollywood remakes so many goddamn movies that you are left with nothing new to watch. Me, I like seeing things from different perspectives. Even though I wish they would not remake The Crow, I'll be intrigued to see what the Norrington does with it since I adored the first Blade and liked The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

totally agree with your comment. Although I was singing a different tune a few months ago, I have slowly come to realize the fact it looks good and there's enough interest behind it people will see it and get it, despite the comic book context that adds to the experience. My much younger cousin told me he was psyched to see it and he's never read the Watchmen. He's a freshmen in high school, so if that demo gets it, then I think it's going to do pretty well. BTW I bought him the graphic novel for X-mas this year, so he can really sink his teeth into the experience. My hopes remain high for this movie.

People underestimate how big it would be. Believe it or not, not everybody likes the dark and disturbed Batman. The general public still has fond memories of the Adam West version. It would probably make Fox a hell of a lot of money.

I've got the 60s movie with the commentary from West and Ward - it's still a hell of a lot of fun. I think Batman is big enough to survive having the 60s version available. If Warners was truly concerned about "protecting the image" of Batman, they'd take the Schumacher movies out of circulation.

Really...this didn't just come out of left field...for it to get this far tells me that there has been months if not years of behind the scenes legal wrangling between the two...and somehow Legal at WB thought they had a winning hand...which this judge took away and dick slapped them with. Hey kids...if you are going to shoot an adaption of a hot property..make DAMNED sure you actually have the right to do so. -
Fox currently has the number one movie in the country, plus two possible Best Picture contenders through Fox Searchlight. Yes, Warner's had Dark Knight, but it also had Speed Racer, 10,000 BC and the &%*$@#!! Clone Wars.

I can't read all of these, but one stood out by standundermyumbrella. "Rid the world of another pointless video game movie." Why is this person even on a kick ass site like this when he obviously has not the faintest clue of the entertainment world; he probably still drinks milk from his mom's teet. Second, Fox will huff and puff, but this movie will be released in March, but at an extremely high cost to WB. Unfortunately it serves them right when they have such an inept legal department. But the online community does a pretty good job of declaring the "conventional wisdom" on any number of film issues, and that has an impact down the line. On paper, Paul Anderson is a successful director. But online genre fans think he sucks, starting from Harry on down, and I don't see him graduating from his directing ghetto any time soon, in part due to the stigma attached to his reputation by "online haters". Ratner gets cut a little more slack, but for how long? And the reputation of The Iron Giant only continues to grow over time, in part due to the missionary efforts of members of the online film community. That film was a "failure" the way that Shawshank was.

clearly someone at WB HAD to know about the potential rights issue even before preproduction started so yes it's a shitty thing what Fox is doing but it's within their rights to do so. Someone from WB fucked up and allowed this to move forward before they got all clearances and had the legalities wrapped up.

Boycotting Fox alone would be wrong. There's plenty of evidence (see EW) that Fox at least tried to discuss settlement with WB early in the process and WB refused. So this is not solely a Fox issue, WB is at least as responsible. Geekdom should pick one movie from each studio to boycott to show our power and force these 2 to work it out. I'd propose Wolverine for Fox. WB is tougher depending on what's coming out when there's Thundercats, Jonah Hex, and Ender's Game as possibilities. AICN should take the lead on calling this and both companies should be targetted equally.
