Awesome looking animated sci-fi flick 9 finally gets a trailer, just in time for Christmas!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Merry Christmas indeed! Look at what Apple has given us unworthy humans! The first trailer for the feature version of Shane Acker's awesome CG Animated short film 9, in Glorious Quicktime no less.
CHECK OUT THE TRAILER HERE!!!
I love the opening of the trailer, which has a very depressing and SECRET OF NIMH-ish vibe, doesn't it? Plus look at that voice cast! Christopher Plummer! Martin Landau! Crispin Glover!!!
Shane Acker's short really struck me when I saw it... what? Three or four years ago? And I've been curious to see what he does with the feature, how much Tim Burton's influence on the project would be, etc. But it seems like Acker's vision is intact. I am dying to see the full movie... I guess I have nine months to wait...
Here's the original Oscar nominated short if you haven't seen it:

Nice
-
....background noise on this vid. Right at the begining, it sounds like someone getting murdered....or having lots and lots of naked fun.
-
But might be worth seeing on DVD, maybe.
-
...And a shitty movie. It's sock puppets jumping away from wacky robot monsters in a post apocalyptic future. No, seriously, this must be an elaborate set up for a new Xbox game.
-
Post Apocalypse Steampunk Puppet-people. I'm there with bells on.
-
I saw the 9 short at Seattle's Bumbershoot a couple of years ago, I'll definitely be seeing this
-
when this would come out, I always loved the short too. On a sidenote, did anyone ever play that game 9, the last resort? That game was kick-ass.
-
...Which is actually a compliment. Even a funky old game like DOOM has a plot better than just about any horror movie made in the time since.
-
How many people do you reckon are gonna see this next year expecting a lavish musical starring Judi Dench and Daniel Day-Lewis?
-
don't understand how rag dolls are alive, or why there are skeletoncyborg animals, but it looks awesome- and that energetic emotional score doesn't hurt either.
nice! -
is "Welcome Home" by Coheed and Cambria. It's awesome.
-
but still pretty cool.
-
What was the deal at the end. He had collected their souls and they were being let go...to do what? This short was very confusing. Cool-looking, but confusing. Also, why was there sound of people fucking at the beginning? That made it even more confusing.
-
I have a feeling the movie is going to be a lot less dark than the short originally was--in tone, story, and style. But I suspect that's to attract a larger audience...
Even so, I'll be there. It still looks like it could be fun, as I really want to support the introduction of new blood into the film industry. -

I Gave Up On It A Minute Plus In. Its Like A R&D Demo???
by media messiah
These people are clearly talented, but this comes off as a R&D test demo for certain technology. I like the way the characters move, and the CGI rendering, and perhaps that is the test? Other than that, what I saw of it is boring. Looks like a computer animated version of old Tool music videos.
-
Where you been? Last time I saw your name in credits....hey, you were voicing a penguin? Now a burlap sack with Wall*E's eyes? Hope you get back to live action, dude. Wait, why is this trailer showing the names of the voice actors as if we'll recognize their characters next September? Kind of an odd choice since they all look like potato sacks. Poor Elijah Wood, he'd only get a taller older gal like Jennifer Connelly in an animated movie. Also is it just me or does Hollywood pair her with younger men a lot? She could have babysat Leonardo Dicaprio, but she was still his love interest in Blood Diamond. Not that I'm complaining, every movie should have her in it, and at least this ain't as a bad as Freddie Highmore and Madonna.
-
Loved the original short but this trailer was a bit disappointing. Cut too fast and with awful music.
The rending doesn't look any more sophisticated than in the short which is surprising. -
Especially for an animated, but I still can't say I have any clue what the movie is about, or what "their mission" is. It really looked played like the Wanted trailer but CG. I hope this is better than that POS.
-
and why have I never even heard of that short??
-
The Captain, by The Knife. Awesome, awesome group, and having their music in the trailer has pretty much dog-whistled me into seeing the film. Nice job, soulless corporate trailer maker!
-
It actually reminds me of that shitty ass City of Ember movie everyone already forgot about. The voice cast sounds good....but that fucking Russian guy-- hhhmmmm, his involvement makes me nervous. He should dig trenches for the rest of his life.
-
Ok, we all know that there is much more money to be made in video games. I get the feeling they design these movies from the ground up to end up being video games.
-
"It looks like a video game". "I'm incapable of understanding anything that shows the least ounce of originality or imagination". "That shade of green is TOO green" I swear some of you people are such petty, simple-minded bottom feeders. OK, now that that's out of my system, the point to the short was he released their souls to go to puppet heaven or where ever. It wasn't so they could do anything, just so they wouldn't be slaves to that cat thing. And he conquered his fears and became a better rag doll for it.
-
....its just sooooooo fucking Burtonesque and I'm really over that. Corpse Bride taught me enough is a fuckin' nuff.
But I'll still support it, because it looks a hell of a lot more inventive that formulaic cookie cutter Pixar bullshit. So this will be the last seemingly negative thing I say about this film. -
and i ask that because as much as I enjoyed it, I have no idea what it was.
And yes, it looks like something American MaGee make for Xbox. -
I just saw the trailer after watching the actual short itself.
All I can say is that after seeing the short, I was left with this feeling of desperately wanting more. And then the trailer tapped me on the shoulder and said, "were you looking for this?"
and I couldn't speak - I could only slowly nod my head while my jaw hung slack and I watched the trailer again.
If they make a video game out of this, I want it. now. -
I'll definitely be looking forward to this movie.
I do like the music in the trailer, too. I wanna know what the music is when they're listing the cast. -
i watched it with pc speakers on low so heard none of it. Makes you wonder if the guy who hosted it on YouTube just rickrolled Harry.
-
I hate it when animated movies list the cast that way. At least this isn't like a Dreamworks production, where the characters *do* look like the actors, because that's the only reason anyone would want to see them.
-
which is fine by me. Now he needs to offer the same assistance to Circulatory System's sophomore.
-
that was pretty fucking great. and nice little low budget short too.
-
just saying
-
but its totally the wrong colour of green.
-
there are tons of voice actors who should be used...and all the characters look exactly the same...gonna be kinda hard to relate to any of them
-
The trailer looks awesome.
By the way, the forest is the great potential for an original movie and the trees are the CGI when looked at by the ones with the jaded eyes. -
Obviously with talking characters it's different tonally but you can have more of a story. I don't find the short very confusing. Villain captures souls. Hero frees them. Not complicated. As for the feature length, while we still don't know the details of what it's all about, it's clear that it's a post apocalyptic world and they were created to save the world somehow. How much more info is required for the trailer. I mean it's a lot more information than was conveyed in the Seven Pounds trailer.

I think Tim Burton had a strong influence on the original short
by mr. moe
-
this has a lot of promise.
-
I'll go see it.
-
This thing looks good, and the short kicks ass too. Wrong shade of green? Yeah, and that colour of rust wasn't quite right either. Or the burlaptexture on the numbered dudes..a little bit off. Oh, and the type of zipper used om the little guys should have been velcro..hmm..what else, there must be more bullshit I can cough up..
-
This trailer scratched an itch I didn't even know I had. How long has it been since we've had an adventure movie that was appropriate for kids but wasn't afraid of going dark? I think about the movies that made a big impact on me as a kid (Labyrinth, The Neverending Story, The Secret of Nimh, The Last Unicorn, The Dark Crystal) and I wonder what happened to kids' movies that let the characters play for real stakes. What happened to movies that delivered a genuine unsettling creepiness along with their heroics? Aside from maybe Miyazaki, I can't think of a single kids' movie made in the past 10 years that I would put in the same category as the above list. Please, if anyone has suggestions, let me know.
-
I agree, its not afraid to go dark. I liked the short but I also like the idea of expanding on the story. Looks promising. Not to mention I love post apocalyptic stuff AND miniature stories (i.e. Mary Norton's The Borrowers, etc) so this story seems like it was written just for me. But not in theaters till next September? I think I would rather not see trailers that far out but that's just me.
-
looks like a funny movie.
-
...the product of an unholy union of an animated Tool video and Toy Story. Fucking awesome. It is nice to see a cartoon with a dark edge. I can only assume that the people who didn't like it are now enjoying their copy of "The House Bunny" they got for Christmas.
