There's A Clip From Joss Whedon's DOLLHOUSE Online...

Published at:  Dec 22, 2008 10:53:57 AM CST

Merrick here...

Entertainment Weekly's posted a clip from Joss Whedon's DOLLHOUSE.

In Dollhouse, Eliza Dushku plays a young woman named Echo, a member of a group of people known as "Actives" or "Dolls." The Dolls have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas, including memory, muscle memory, skills, and language, for different assignments. They're then hired out for particular jobs, crimes, fantasies, and occasional good deeds.

...explains THIS Wiki entry.

SEE THE SEQUENCE HERE!!!

Hate me if you must, but this clip's dialogue feels really stilted to me & its pacing totally off.

This production of DOLLHOUSE has been a bit beleaguered to date. A new first episode was shot for thw series (reportedly Whedon's idea) - with the original first episode being repurposed as episode 2. The original late-Summer/early Fall launch of the show was pushed to mid-season (details HERE), and the production shut down for two weeks in September to allow Whedon time to regroup/rework the scripting of episodes. To make matters worse, it's slated to premiere in a much-dreaded Friday night time slot, usually seen as something of a killing ground for television series.

From what I'm seeing here, maybe they still haven't shaken out all the kinks?

What do you think?

    I agree...with reservations

    by toasterslayer

I agree, but I also feel that these "kinks" that you speak of are usually evident in most pilot episodes, sometimes dealing with actors getting used to their characters. I'm still extremely excited for the show and can't wait for February 13th.

    by panthermatt

I will agree that the edit was not as crisp as perhaps it could be, which would throw some of the timing off, but nothing so bad as to make me less interested in the show. I still can't figure out why Whedon would return to Fox, though... Just doesn't make sense to me

I'm a huge fan of Joss Whedon, and I should be really aching to see this...but I'm really indifferent about it. I don't think Eliza has the acting chops to pull this role off and looking at that clip I don't think that programmer guy has a good enough grasp on the character - he seems off.

For a clip ment to try and tell the story of this girl and this organazation it works fairly well. I showed several people the clip who had no intrest in the show and Had never heard about Dollhouse and they were intrigued by the clip. I can only hope that Fox does a good marketing job this time and that Joss manages to generate another enjoyable series.

Amd as a correction, the original first episode is no longer the second episode, it's being thrown out entirely, doomed to show up on our complete series box set.

    by membirdman

It's because it feels totally out of context, without any explanation or development to flesh it out. Take the Kaylee-Book initial meeting out of the context, it'd feel just as stilted and off-paced.

Until I see a couple of episodes. Basing an opinion of a show based on one clip taken out of context? Yeah, that makes sense. Buffy and Angel both took a little while to find their footing, then became the best things on TV (at the time - I had yet to see Deadwood or the Wire). I'll give this a chance to grow before shooting it down.

Did you ever get so bombarded with trailers and press for a movie that gets delayed? Then when the movie finally does come out, you ask yourself "didn't this come out already?" That's how I feel about this show. There's been so much leadup for this, I feel like it already premiered, lasted 4 episodes, was cancelled, found a new life on DVD, and now they're making the movie that changes continunity just enough to make it lame and it will have so many early screenings that everybody will have already seen it by opening weekend and it will tank in the theaters. Oh, wait...

Is a great show, of course its rough around the edges but holds a strong fan base from fans of the franchise and those who have found a certain charm in the cast and the show itself. That alone has carried it into a second season. Essentially Fox is sending the series on a Suicide Mission to help launch Dollhouse, but in turn is doing more harm than good by stickign it in the death slot of Fridays Primetime.

As for the clip: Were you expecting Dushku-fu? 'Splosions? Catsuits? Co-ed showers? It was exposistion with a tiny set up - the star of the show was barely in it! They were obviously going for something deeper than eye candy. Most people don't go for deep. Me....I wanna see if the dolls have souls. And how evil this organiaztion actually is.

Also, Elisa Dushku looks OLD. Her arms looks all whack and man like. She doesn't look good here. I'm Staying Home on Friday's

    by henry fool

I'm a socially stunted misfit writer with a gazillion sci-fi ideas I'm working on. If this is the destiny I've chosen for myself, then at least I have a Friday with two good shows to look forward to. Dollhouse may start out clunky but it's Whedon. That means it'll plod along for a few episodes and then suddenly get brilliant. He's made some truly great shows. But he's never made a show with a great pilot episode. It always takes a few for him to get going. Buffy had one brilliant episode in its first season, Witch. It never fully took off until episode three of season two. Angel never took off till season two, either. It's only great moments in S1 were when it was being a Buffy spinoff. And Firefly really didn't hit full stride until it's third episode. Now with Dollhouse on Friday, it looks like another cult following. Even if it's a short one, I plan to be a part of it. I hated "Terminator" when it first debuted but it's had some pretty damn good episodes this season. Sci-Fi Fridays on Fox sounds like it might get pretty bitchin' for us geekoids. It's too bad both shows will probably be cancelled at the end of the season. But you still have to enjoy the good things while they last. God Bless the DVR.

Your statement is only correct if you are referring to the broadcast order of Firefly with The Train Job being the premier. sheesh.

Yeah Joss did ok with Buffy and Angel but dont forget

    by spike fan

he also dragged out Buffy to its death with the introduction of the Dawn charachter the ruination of Willow's story from power to magic crack and the rest of the god awful S6 and S7. Chosen as a series finale truly was a piece of crap.
I even tried to read his comic but its even worse.
Buffy should have eneded in S5 and stayed dead in her grave.

As for Angel Whedons idea was for a monster/victim of the week show it was Minear who made it about the charachters and there devolpment Whedon just ran with it and took the credit. Same way a large scale of BtVs success was due to David Greenwalt as a show runner and how mid s4 when he left to do Angel full time the quality mysteriously dropped off.
Yeah whedon is good but lets not go over board with the worship

If this wasn't Whedon, nobody'd care. The concept sounds like it came from a 70s sci-fi story.

Eliza Dushku's pacing was off last night in my bed!

    by leafar the lost

I quote Merrick, "...this clip's dialogue feels really stilted to me & its pacing totally off."
I don't know what you are talking about it. It looked fine to me. There is no way you can judge an entire episode by a 2 minute clip. It probably will be cancelled after several episodes, just like Firefly.

To me the real backbone of Angel was David Greenwalt. While Whedon deserves credit for the creation, Greenwalt is the true backbone of Angel.

If Tim Minear is the true "genius" behind Angel then WHAT THE FUCK is going on with "Heroes"? Now, don't get me wrong. I love Tim's shows, when they're good. But the last two years have proven that he's always going to need a Brian or Joss who just have the idiosyncratic ability to create quirky moments of beauty in a genre universe. It's what set shows like Buffy and Heroes (season one) and Galactica apart from the ordinary sci-fi/fantasy teen drivel we see. And if you're going to cling to this ignorant, lame ass insistence that Joss isn't the mastermind of his shows then at least mention Jane Espensen for God's sake.

than any other Whedon series. I've like all his shows, but I don't know about this one. I'll have to wait and see, although since it will probably be cancelled, why invest the time? Dushku is gorgeous, though, so I should at least try it. She has no idea how much she wants me.

Wow, they're in Wolfram and Hart...AGAIN.

    by annoyyou

Boy, that blew - and this is what Whedon re-wrote?! The first version must have been total dreck. This will probably last a big 6 episodes and still be hailed by Whedon's roids as OMGTHEGREATESTSHOWEVAR!!! And for the record, Buffy seasons 6 and especially 7 sucked big time (unfocused, with bad continuity and stupid premises, all due to the influence of the horrid Marti Noxious). The show should have ended with the great season 5.

How in the world can you talk about stupid premises in a show about vampires? Man, can you be more ignorant? The whole thing is a stupid premise. And Dollhouse will last 13 episodes, because that's what Fox contracted. Again, you display vast ignorance. You are not even worthy to eat the shit from my ass.

    Season 6 of Buffy

    by ckuouka

was ass. Complete and total ass. It had a good beginning and then the finale with Dark Willow was good, but otherwise, it was embarrassing to say you were a Buffy fan during that period. Season 7 was an improvement from 6, but the show would've ended perfectly if they had just made Season 5 the last year. The season finale of 5 would've been a great bookend to the show. But it felt like it was dragging itself along in Season 6.

Well, no...I haven't made any friends on Talkbacks or anywhere else on the web. Once was enough for me. People you meet online, always disappear on you, I suppose, so I comment now, but I don't need anymore magically disappearing friends--it's not good for the heart, mind or spirit to have your emotions toyed with and crushed. I did however try to make friends with a few people here, but they all flaked, so enough with all that, it's not real. After several times of trying, I have just given up. People online are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get, but most likely, it won't be any good for you, no matter what. As far as Whedon's work...I don't know what to expect thls time out. The clip looks horrible...and that programmer doesn't work for me...but what do I know? That guy has his dreams too, and needs to feed his famly like anyone else, so I'll bash litely...but, to another subject. It would be nice to see a Serenity sequel with Neal Patrick Harris as the villain.

And it pisses me of your sense of entitlement. The desperation you put forth seeking a writing job on fucking TALKBACK....it's like you honestly think that just saying you want to be a writer will get you offers. On talkback. Like you will be "discovered". On talkback.

    by media messiah

Who knows, maybe Joss Whedon will get drunk one night and say, what the hell--I'll give some poor idiot a job, and maybe that idiot will be worth it, or maybe not(???)...but there are a lot of people working in Hollywood who aren't worth it--I'll just be one more, of thousands, getting corporate welfare at the expense of studio and network investors--then again...unlike them, I might manage to earn my keep--I hope so, anyway??? As for me looking for jobs this way, I had a very sick girlfriend, and this was my way of trying to care for her in any way I could make a dime...but she left, like people always do--so it really doesn't matter now. I don't like Hollywood much anymore. I just want to get my investment back, and get out of ths industry...and go live on a farm of my own...and be a happy nobody...rather than a unhappy nobody--the latter of which, I confess to being.

    Fuck season 7!

    by lord_zedd

Season 6 was much better than the anticlimactic season 7, which had no comedy outside of Andrew and plot holes galore. They really didn't think that year through, and you can tell. (The main story arc was stolen from one of their own pre-published media tie-ins!) Plus the film quality seemed to decline, which is something I haven't seen happen on a show before. Season 6 was much more engaging and still had the trademark zesty Buffy scent, whereas S7 was stale farts.
