There's A Clip From Joss Whedon's DOLLHOUSE Online...
Merrick here...
Entertainment Weekly's posted a clip from Joss Whedon's DOLLHOUSE.
In Dollhouse, Eliza Dushku plays a young woman named Echo, a member of a group of people known as "Actives" or "Dolls." The Dolls have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas, including memory, muscle memory, skills, and language, for different assignments. They're then hired out for particular jobs, crimes, fantasies, and occasional good deeds.
...explains THIS Wiki entry.

Hate me if you must, but this clip's dialogue feels really stilted to me & its pacing totally off.
This production of DOLLHOUSE has been a bit beleaguered to date. A new first episode was shot for thw series (reportedly Whedon's idea) - with the original first episode being repurposed as episode 2. The original late-Summer/early Fall launch of the show was pushed to mid-season (details HERE), and the production shut down for two weeks in September to allow Whedon time to regroup/rework the scripting of episodes. To make matters worse, it's slated to premiere in a much-dreaded Friday night time slot, usually seen as something of a killing ground for television series.
From what I'm seeing here, maybe they still haven't shaken out all the kinks?
What do you think?

I agree, but I also feel that these "kinks" that you speak of are usually evident in most pilot episodes, sometimes dealing with actors getting used to their characters. I'm still extremely excited for the show and can't wait for February 13th.
-
I will agree that the edit was not as crisp as perhaps it could be, which would throw some of the timing off, but nothing so bad as to make me less interested in the show. I still can't figure out why Whedon would return to Fox, though... Just doesn't make sense to me
-
i hate you. you write stupid nerdy immature shit and you have the worst casting always.that said i don't think there is a show you have made that i haven't watched and i hate you for it. this show dows look the worst though. absolute.
-
I'm a huge fan of Joss Whedon, and I should be really aching to see this...but I'm really indifferent about it. I don't think Eliza has the acting chops to pull this role off and looking at that clip I don't think that programmer guy has a good enough grasp on the character - he seems off.
-
...and bring back Firefly!!
-
her getting up from that chair was painfully overacted, and that expression on her face, i'd rather fall on a sword than watch this.
-
Her presence gets me there for at least the first few. Interesting concept as well. But yea, the clip worries me a bit.
-
But actually none of his previous series has looked very exciting at first either, and they have all turned out to be pretty damn classic.
-
evidenced by you getting your tits out in alphabet killer.
-
Joss does characters as well as anyone but in this case your lead character basically is a blank slate and how not sure how much of an emotional attachment viewers can make to her. But yeah FOX friday has a reputation and you already have ground to make up when they stick you there.
-
the music was off, the acting was atrocious and the script was bad
-
topless Eliza!!!! http://www.egotastic.com/ And in case you don't know Egotastic (you should!), it's not-TOO-bad-for-work.
-
Her brief topless scene is all over the webs this morning, egotastic.com, thesuperficial.com, etc... I say, it was a very good move.
-
It's hard to tell out of context, without knowing what rhythm/style has been established, but it does feel off.
-
For a clip ment to try and tell the story of this girl and this organazation it works fairly well. I showed several people the clip who had no intrest in the show and Had never heard about Dollhouse and they were intrigued by the clip. I can only hope that Fox does a good marketing job this time and that Joss manages to generate another enjoyable series.
Amd as a correction, the original first episode is no longer the second episode, it's being thrown out entirely, doomed to show up on our complete series box set. -
I would be happy with a show which could be slow and thoughtful at times. This was better than another trailer I've seen which was very stilted indeed.
-
It's because it feels totally out of context, without any explanation or development to flesh it out. Take the Kaylee-Book initial meeting out of the context, it'd feel just as stilted and off-paced.
-
Until I see a couple of episodes. Basing an opinion of a show based on one clip taken out of context? Yeah, that makes sense. Buffy and Angel both took a little while to find their footing, then became the best things on TV (at the time - I had yet to see Deadwood or the Wire). I'll give this a chance to grow before shooting it down.
-
Herc is going to be furious! Stilted? How DARE you!!!
(I'm just trying to start a fight amongst the AICN staff, really.) -
Even a clip from a good Firefly episode (or Buffy) would look odd. But... that could be the Whedon apologist in me speaking.
High hopes, as always. -
I'm huge but not blind Joss Whedon fan I like all his stuff but also realize that some wasn't as good as others(Firefly and Serenity aren't nearly as good as Buffy or Angel.) but I really liked the clip. I thought it showed some things we had already heard about as well as show the tone of the show and a little about how the people in charge of Dollhouse are towards the Dolls. I can't wait to see a whole episode.
-
Did you ever get so bombarded with trailers and press for a movie that gets delayed? Then when the movie finally does come out, you ask yourself "didn't this come out already?" That's how I feel about this show. There's been so much leadup for this, I feel like it already premiered, lasted 4 episodes, was cancelled, found a new life on DVD, and now they're making the movie that changes continunity just enough to make it lame and it will have so many early screenings that everybody will have already seen it by opening weekend and it will tank in the theaters. Oh, wait...
-
Is a great show, of course its rough around the edges but holds a strong fan base from fans of the franchise and those who have found a certain charm in the cast and the show itself. That alone has carried it into a second season. Essentially Fox is sending the series on a Suicide Mission to help launch Dollhouse, but in turn is doing more harm than good by stickign it in the death slot of Fridays Primetime.
-
and wow that clip really sucked. srsly are they reading that crappy dialog off cue cards?
-
a stinker. Whedon is the most overrated showrunner in tv.
-
At least that idea has potential for development. DOLLHOUSE, on the other hand, looks to be cancelled before the first episode is over.
-
I can't believe I wasted two whole minutes of my life watching that heap of dung! I will, as always, give Joss a chance, but he's already on thin ice with this one.
-
they're all robots.
-
is that all the characters are really dolls. The last shot of the series should have a couple of kids playing with them creating different charcters, using different voices, and different scenes. Make it into a Twilight Zone ending.

Theres no inherent dislike of her just a bit "meh". Not sure if having her as a lead is going to get this show anywhere as basically she just seems, in many ways, just slightly above average.

That geek guy is annoying already.
by i_am_not_the_droid_you_are_looking_for
From the clip, this looks pretty shit. But it's only a couple of minutes so I won't write it off just yet.
-
She shows her cans on egotastic.com so go check it out. I am not lying.
-
His TV series "Just the Ten of Us" was brilliant in the way it merged Aaron Sorkin and 13-year-olds at the mall!
-
Which is ALREADY canceled.
-
Let's face it...this clip is meant to get us "excited" about the show. Whedon couldn't be on thinner ice. I love Buffy and Angel, but this looks even worse than Firefly, and that's one of the harshest things I've ever said in my life.
-
The release of Dr. Horrible strikes again.
As for the clip: Were you expecting Dushku-fu? 'Splosions? Catsuits? Co-ed showers? It was exposistion with a tiny set up - the star of the show was barely in it! They were obviously going for something deeper than eye candy. Most people don't go for deep. Me....I wanna see if the dolls have souls. And how evil this organiaztion actually is.
Huge set though! That came through much clearer than in the trailer. -
I'm surprised he didn't post this...
-
You fucking legend for sticking this up on the site, Herc is going to blow a gasket when he sees it. Mad props to you for telling it how it is..oh and yeh that did look utter crap.
-
Cuz Fox would cancel it even if it was on CW they'd call and ask a favor of the programming director. Seriously, that was a great 30 minute show this summer. Loving the Doogie Hower, just not in the way he wants....
-
That shit was extremely sub-par. Extremely. A group of "special" high school kids with a camcorder could do a better job. That was horrible. And I like Whedon.
-
I figure his computer constantly scans for any mention of Whedon so he can write his amusing little asides. As bent as that dude gets you would have thought Whedon fucked his mom and killed his dog. Or maybe Whedon killed his mom and fucked the dog? Hmmmmm...
-
...Whedon-Obsessed impotent rage tantrums.
-
The pacing is so completely off. It feels like the actors are trying to remember their lines. What the fuck is with all the long pauses? It's almost like they forgot to edit the scene and we're looking at raw footage of a bad take.
-
it could also just be the actors' fault. It kinda sounds like they're not listening to each other and waiting for their turn to talk. NOT MY LINE, NOT MY LINE, NOT MY LINE, and then ACT, ACT, ACT.
-
You dumb motherfuckers, this is a minutes long clip from a goddamned pilot episode, like every other pilot in television HISTORY it has some kinks that get ironed out in acting, in direction, in the scripts. How fuckin mush minded and moronic to already bash this shit for being imperfect when it's the same as every single tv pilot ever created, ever, ever, ever.
-
but thinks that dialogue is stilted? What a great addition he makes to this site!
-
But only cause the tech guy sucked. Seriously, that's why the pacing was off. I will give it a chance just to see Dushku's hot ass every week. But fire the tech guy he is going to take a shaky show and make it worse. But hell if its coming on Friday's on Fox it won't last. Check their track record that is the death slot for Fox.
-
Does Merrick actually like the new Knight Rider? Like, for real?? Because if he does I will automatically discredit everything he ever writes.
-
Unless, of course, his obnoxious ass gets brutally killed off in the first half of the first episode.seriously, he is Jar-Jar Binks Bad.The writing did seem a bit self-aware-notice-my-pseudo-deep-dialog-skills. I expect this will become a deleted scene by the time this airs. Hope the actor becomes deleted, too.
-
The scene was pretty bland, but that's without seeing it in the context of the full episode. Anyway, I give it three episodes before it's canceled.
-
I agree with everyone that they should recast the lab tech guy. I doubt he's even old enough to enter a bar, how can he be old enough to be a tech guy in some super top secret orgnization. Also, Elisa Dushku looks OLD. Her arms looks all whack and man like. She doesn't look good here. This seems like another by-the-book "Knight Rider" t.v. show with no thought going into design or characters. BTW....The new season of Terminator the sarah conner chronicles SUCK! The show lost all it's cleverness and charm. Now it's just weird. Plus, they barely show Summer Glau. What's up with that!
-
They should of made a t.v. show or movie based on the Knotts Scary Farm maze "The Doll Factory". Now that would be cool!
-
Eliza once said that we'd have a better chance of seeing God than seeing her nude. Well, I've seen the clip and the stills and topless is still nude. I just don't recall having seen God. Unless seeing her tits seeing the face of God. If so, then well done.

I think everybody's New Years Resolution should be...
by domi'sinnerchild
Give ANY scripted show a fair shake and watch it with an open mind if there's even a hint of a good review about it. Otherwise, everything is going to be a Reality Show. Does anybody really want to see this cancelled for the Swan: Return to the Lake? Even if it sucks, I'd rather bitch about the show and try to figure out how to fix it for the next three years while enjoying the eye candy like Heros.

I Was Just Laughing At Joss 4 His Script Writing Problems
by media messiah
Yeah, oh, I got a kick that Joss was having problems writing Dollhouse, although I'm a Whedon fanatic. I just figured, how could this guy be having any real problems doing that, writing, I mean? Well, I have been getting my ass kicked, writing of late, just after my laughing about Joss. Well, I'm not laughing anymore. Sorry Joss--I now understand.
-
...of Dushku with some earlier pics, and, as Patrick Stewart says, we've seen everything. http://www.egotastic.com/entertainment/celebrities/eliza-dushku/eliza-dushku-is-shaved-000718
-
I was holding my breath, but this looks and sounds just like my cup of tea!
Morph -
Some good, some questionable here. Can't tell yet.
-
But otherwise... meh.
-
Although she's better to look at, Slater's doin' it better. So much for originality in TV. What's with the piano background mood muzac? I smell a turd comin'.
-
The Swan was actually pretty fucking awsome...best part is they became hotties but there kids still looked butt ugly.
-
Does anyone else remember that other little short-lived Fox sci-fi show that began on Fridays? I think it was called The X-Files.
-
completely; the 2nd episode is not the orignal pilot. Where's that Joss post....
"...for the record: The original pilot was in fact thrown out. Again, at my behest. Once it became clear what paradigm the Network was shooting for, it just didn't fit at all, even after I'd reshot more than half of it." -
I'm a socially stunted misfit writer with a gazillion sci-fi ideas I'm working on. If this is the destiny I've chosen for myself, then at least I have a Friday with two good shows to look forward to. Dollhouse may start out clunky but it's Whedon. That means it'll plod along for a few episodes and then suddenly get brilliant. He's made some truly great shows. But he's never made a show with a great pilot episode. It always takes a few for him to get going. Buffy had one brilliant episode in its first season, Witch. It never fully took off until episode three of season two. Angel never took off till season two, either. It's only great moments in S1 were when it was being a Buffy spinoff. And Firefly really didn't hit full stride until it's third episode. Now with Dollhouse on Friday, it looks like another cult following. Even if it's a short one, I plan to be a part of it. I hated "Terminator" when it first debuted but it's had some pretty damn good episodes this season. Sci-Fi Fridays on Fox sounds like it might get pretty bitchin' for us geekoids. It's too bad both shows will probably be cancelled at the end of the season. But you still have to enjoy the good things while they last. God Bless the DVR.
-
Your statement is only correct if you are referring to the broadcast order of Firefly with The Train Job being the premier. The original premier was the Serenity two-parter final episodes aired just before Christmas and immediately before cancelation. The Serenity episodes are arguably better than the Serenity movie.
-
100% nightmare fuel.
-
I won't throw Whedon out without giving him a fair hearing. And, well, this has to be better than most films I have seen of late...like Dark Knight or Tropic Thunder, which no one would have missed a thing...if they missed those movies, or if it were never made at all.
-
I know you have made some friends here on talkbacks but I think you are full on retard.
-
sure the dialogue might seem a little too precious in this snippet, but damnit, Fox, give us a full 13 eps to let Joss flex his chops. it's the italics-least you could do.
sheesh. -
he also dragged out Buffy to its death with the introduction of the Dawn charachter the ruination of Willow's story from power to magic crack and the rest of the god awful S6 and S7. Chosen as a series finale truly was a piece of crap.
I even tried to read his comic but its even worse.
Buffy should have eneded in S5 and stayed dead in her grave.
As for Angel Whedons idea was for a monster/victim of the week show it was Minear who made it about the charachters and there devolpment Whedon just ran with it and took the credit. Same way a large scale of BtVs success was due to David Greenwalt as a show runner and how mid s4 when he left to do Angel full time the quality mysteriously dropped off.
Yeah whedon is good but lets not go over board with the worship -
If this wasn't Whedon, nobody'd care. The concept sounds like it came from a 70s sci-fi story.
-
I quote Merrick, "...this clip's dialogue feels really stilted to me & its pacing totally off."
I don't know what you are talking about it. It looked fine to me. There is no way you can judge an entire episode by a 2 minute clip. It probably will be cancelled after several episodes, just like Firefly.
-
To me the real backbone of Angel was David Greenwalt. While Whedon deserves credit for the creation, Greenwalt is the true backbone of Angel.
-
If Tim Minear is the true "genius" behind Angel then WHAT THE FUCK is going on with "Heroes"? Now, don't get me wrong. I love Tim's shows, when they're good. But the last two years have proven that he's always going to need a Brian or Joss who just have the idiosyncratic ability to create quirky moments of beauty in a genre universe. It's what set shows like Buffy and Heroes (season one) and Galactica apart from the ordinary sci-fi/fantasy teen drivel we see. And if you're going to cling to this ignorant, lame ass insistence that Joss isn't the mastermind of his shows then at least mention Jane Espensen for God's sake.
-
just earner hos name, right? The showrunner of Heroes is Tim Kring (of Crossing Jordan), not the lovely and talented Tim minear!
-
NO EDIT!!!!
-
"Yeah whedon is good but lets not go over board with the worship" -HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
than any other Whedon series. I've like all his shows, but I don't know about this one. I'll have to wait and see, although since it will probably be cancelled, why invest the time? Dushku is gorgeous, though, so I should at least try it. She has no idea how much she wants me.
-
So eat shit from my ass you queercake. 6 and 7 were a needed change of pace from the show.
-
...anyone else seen the Dr Horrible DVD? Commentary the Musical is stunning....
-
Boy, that blew - and this is what Whedon re-wrote?! The first version must have been total dreck. This will probably last a big 6 episodes and still be hailed by Whedon's roids as OMGTHEGREATESTSHOWEVAR!!! And for the record, Buffy seasons 6 and especially 7 sucked big time (unfocused, with bad continuity and stupid premises, all due to the influence of the horrid Marti Noxious). The show should have ended with the great season 5.
-
How in the world can you talk about stupid premises in a show about vampires? Man, can you be more ignorant? The whole thing is a stupid premise. And Dollhouse will last 13 episodes, because that's what Fox contracted. Again, you display vast ignorance. You are not even worthy to eat the shit from my ass.
-
When they do that view from above, it really does look like a different angle of the Angel's Wolfram & Hart offices.
-
This will bomb so hard, that anyone not living in a fallout shelter will be killed.
-
You sound like one constipated person. Oh, and for the record, seasons 6 and 7 were not very good.
-
Dumbasses can't come up with better programming than that, kill yourselves!
I'm sick of goddamned incompetence being continually rewarded. -
was ass. Complete and total ass. It had a good beginning and then the finale with Dark Willow was good, but otherwise, it was embarrassing to say you were a Buffy fan during that period. Season 7 was an improvement from 6, but the show would've ended perfectly if they had just made Season 5 the last year. The season finale of 5 would've been a great bookend to the show. But it felt like it was dragging itself along in Season 6.
-
Well, no...I haven't made any friends on Talkbacks or anywhere else on the web. Once was enough for me. People you meet online, always disappear on you, I suppose, so I comment now, but I don't need anymore magically disappearing friends--it's not good for the heart, mind or spirit to have your emotions toyed with and crushed. I did however try to make friends with a few people here, but they all flaked, so enough with all that, it's not real. After several times of trying, I have just given up. People online are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get, but most likely, it won't be any good for you, no matter what. As far as Whedon's work...I don't know what to expect thls time out. The clip looks horrible...and that programmer doesn't work for me...but what do I know? That guy has his dreams too, and needs to feed his famly like anyone else, so I'll bash litely...but, to another subject. It would be nice to see a Serenity sequel with Neal Patrick Harris as the villain.
-
You only piss me off when you "edit" your posts (OWN your shit, bro and if some douche calls you on spelling and shit; you know they don't don't have a better arguement.)
And it pisses me of your sense of entitlement. The desperation you put forth seeking a writing job on fucking TALKBACK....it's like you honestly think that just saying you want to be a writer will get you offers. On talkback. Like you will be "discovered". On talkback.
I don't think you grasp what talkback is.
-
Life Serial (This is an ex-mummy hand!), Once More with Fucking Feeling, Tabula Rasa (Randy Giles), Older & Faraway (I want to leave...) and Entropy (Ananka) and the tri-nerds.
I was grateful for teh sixth. -
Who knows, maybe Joss Whedon will get drunk one night and say, what the hell--I'll give some poor idiot a job, and maybe that idiot will be worth it, or maybe not(???)...but there are a lot of people working in Hollywood who aren't worth it--I'll just be one more, of thousands, getting corporate welfare at the expense of studio and network investors--then again...unlike them, I might manage to earn my keep--I hope so, anyway??? As for me looking for jobs this way, I had a very sick girlfriend, and this was my way of trying to care for her in any way I could make a dime...but she left, like people always do--so it really doesn't matter now. I don't like Hollywood much anymore. I just want to get my investment back, and get out of ths industry...and go live on a farm of my own...and be a happy nobody...rather than a unhappy nobody--the latter of which, I confess to being.
-
Same time, Same place (Willow strips..yummy), Selfless (She was one of yours), Him (Jacket of Lust), Coversations with Dead People (Bloody hands in your lap), Storyteller (Andrew waxes), Lies My Parents Told Me (Spike's Mom becomes Whorish), End of Days (Angel revels in Buffy Kickass) and Chosen (Buffy jaunt across buildings).
Yous guys are fuckled. -
It's not going to happen. Not here. Not in talkback. It's just yakking and quacking. I basically don't like you that much and I'm the only one listening. Screw your head on right, man.
And you've talked about your ex in every post you have made since you've split. Do yourself a favor and get stubborn and get over it. -
...but I'm running out of energy.
-
Season 6 was much better than the anticlimactic season 7, which had no comedy outside of Andrew and plot holes galore. They really didn't think that year through, and you can tell. (The main story arc was stolen from one of their own pre-published media tie-ins!) Plus the film quality seemed to decline, which is something I haven't seen happen on a show before. Season 6 was much more engaging and still had the trademark zesty Buffy scent, whereas S7 was stale farts.
