Agent 86 on the Wachowski's and Frank Miller's HARD BOILED

Published at:  Jul 14, 1999 12:08:36 AM CDT

Hey there everyone, the gal with the high heel shoe cellular phone just slipped it off
that gorgeous nylon encased size 6 spiked heel and gave me a ring a ling. HARD
BOILED was wonderful comic pairing of Geof Darrow and Frank Miller that if memory
serves came before SIN CITY. My bet is this is still in the talking stages... But Agent 86
here claims it’s a done deal. We’ll see now won’t we? Well, here she is...

Agent 86 contacting Harry Knowles, Come in Harry Knowles!!! Emergency! Harry
Knowles are you there?

Oh there you are. Goody, I found you. I just wanted to drop you a short note about a
project that is very much on the burners of my boss Nick Cage. I know many of you are
thinking he’s only interested in SUPERMAN, though he was once in the running for
IRON MAN before Cruise grabbed that for himself. Well, now he is attached to a new
comics project. I’m sure darling, you remember Frank Miller and Geof Darrow’s HARD
BOILED comic? Well my boy Nick has gone and gotten himself all tangled up with those
Wachowski Brothers.

Now noone is really sure when anyone is going to actually begin shooting this thing
because of that MATRIX 2 & 3 deal. Seems somebody thought that original film
garnered some sequels.

I hope this keeps you warm and cuddly tonight Harry,

Agent 86

Folks HARRY HERE, Moriarty just reminded me that Geof Darrow was one of the Wachowski's production designer dudes/art fellas on MATRIX... so of course they like his work! That is all...

    Frank Miller

    by happyrhino

I, at least appear, to be first. Or only. But then, everyone 2nd or 3rd says that.
Frank Miller is a wonderful writer, one of the best in the comics medium (and illustrators, for that matter). You're right Harry, Hard Boiled was before Sin City, and in a very different visual style.
I've never seen Nicholas Cage in a Frank Miller Comic, but this could be very beautiful if it's done right, and who to do it right if not the Wachowski's.
It's all in the day, as I remember, in a sort of futuristic noir. Very very cluttered panels, huge colorful images. Darrow's drawings were very succinct though, cleanly messy. If it were captured on film I'm not sure that I've seen anything to compare it to.
Looking forward to it. Be faithful, Brothers. You've already made maybe the only true comic book film with The Matrix. Now make a comic book film that's actually from a comic book.

WINKIE SAYS: how will the MPAA fuck this movie over?

    by misterwinkie

IF this movie is ever made....i wonder how the MPAA will handle it....the way they are handling things now....it looks like a lot of the violence.....and.well....graphic nature will be lost..if the movies remains faithful to the comic......but who knows.....and the futuristic city....cluttered...and....loaded with eye candy.....huge vehicles..(i.e. cop car issue 2)
would make this movie a big budget fest....only time will tell

    Miller Time...

    by dash riprock

Um...Happyrhino...of course Hard Boiled has a different visual style from Sin City...Geoff Darrow drew it...but..um...I know you knew that already...

That having been said, this would be a pretty cool moive, especially with those W. Bros. at the helm.

I agree with the above poster, that there sure would be some trouble with the MPAA if they attempted to do anything like an accurate depiction of what was in the book. Of course,it would also confuse the heck out of 3/4 of the viewing audience. The plot and it's expression aint exactly straight forward. This movie should be equal parts: Phillip Marlowe, Hardware, and Jacobs Ladder...we shall see.

And let me put my vote in for someone...anyone...to get cracking on an excellent IRON MAN movie. I've heard the Cage and Cruise rumors, but nothing concrete. BUt if there is one Marvel property that could be dome 100% right on the big screen, it is IRONMAN. Imagine the Models/CGI armor. Whoah nellie. Now let Roger Stern script the thing and I'm in heaven...

Sure, Frank Miller know how to put together a comic book. But how well do his visions translate onto the big screen. Didn't he write Robocop II?

Of course! Perfect! And re: Frank Miller's big screen work

    by wesley snipes

Wow, it sounds perfect. Why didn't somebody think of this before! Hard Boiled, the Warchowski Bros' thoughtful sci-fi, their relationship with Geof Darrow, their comic book background.. shit, even Nic Cage would be perfect for the lead role (he doesn't look like the main character in the comic, but you could easily see him playing that type of 'guy'). I hope they're able to manage to give it that unique Geof Darrow feel of beauty and repugnance at the same time. But if you were to do it justice visually you'd need a shitload of money..or you'd need to use CGI in a LOT of backgrounds to flesh it out.. yeah, this could definitely kick ass. And regarding Frank Miller's movie work, I believe he claimed his story for Robocop 2 was butchered. But then apparently he had less problems on Robocop 3, and we all know how that turned out. :)

    Revisiting Hard Boiled

    by bosco

I just recently moved and while packing I came across my issues of Hard Boiled and had to read them again. WOW! I even thought how this would look on the big screen. Tough to pull off. The art in those books could never be duplicated on film. But the general idea might still get across. Whatever happens, I'm excited about this project. Now if only they would make a movie about Captain Carrot and the Zoo Crew.

    Frank Miller hates Hollywood

    by inwosuxred

I saw Frank Miller at a convention a couple years ago. He hates Hollywood, to the point where I can't imagine he would allow one of his comics to be made into a movie. He said that Robocop 3 was based on his script for Robocop 2, which was the same script that Robocop 2 used. They made 2 movies out of his one script, neither of which were actually like his script. Even if it did get made, there is no way that comic could get an "R" rating without being so watered down it would be a totally different(which would piss Frank off). Frank is speaking at the big Chicago comic convention this weekend.

    FM and Hollywood

    by properrogue

I spoke with FM around the time that "Family Values" came out. (the most recent Sin City tale for all you out there..) I asked about the chances of a Sin City film at any point. He said, to paraphrase, "Hollywood will NEVER touch Sin City." Based on his experiences with Robocop and the way his voice was filled with venom when spoke about it, I find it a bit hard to believe that Hard Boiled would come to fruition with him still attached. Unless he has complete creative control, that is. (Not that I wouldn't be first in line if the movie happens, especially with the Wach. brothers) I'm going to Chicago this weekend, I'll try to ask him then...

NED SAYS: Winkie is an idiot.

    by ned ryerson

Uhh just to inform you all, especially the incrediby misinformed Winkie, the MPAA doesn't censor anything. Yeah I know you'll say, "But they say you can't use 'hell' anymore! And that's the only swear word my mom will let me hear since it's in The Bible. Unless you count faggot, but... uh... And look what they did to Eyes Wide Shut!"

Ok lets settle this. The MPAA is not law. A lot of movies aren't rated, and contrary to popular belief that doesn't mean their porno movies. And if our friend Ron Jeremy wanted to rate his movie, he could and the MPAA couldn't touch it. They would just slap and NC-17 on it and that's all they do.

Studios change movies NOT the MPAA. Studios seem to be some of the only people around that actually realize that all the MPAA is is a marketing scheme veiled as a "ratings board."

Oh and I don't know anything about this movie or comic, so I'll shut up now.

    Class dismissed.

    Robocop 2 rocked!

    by darth siskel

Although the blue tinted Robocop suit in Robocop 2 blew, the story, action, & humor was great. And Phil's RObocop2 animations were a dream come true. For part3, we got a PG-13 movie, so we know why that one sucked.

I hope more of Frank's books are adapted into films, especially some of his Marvel & DC stories about those heroes. They were among the best ever told. I mean, is there anyone on the planet that DOESN'T want to see a direct to screen adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns? (well I guess Warners)

    cool, but...

    by wally west

I'm begining to think comics just can't be faithfully made into live action anything. Try this...go grab an issue of Hard Boiled (you all have it, right?) and open it to any page. Wouldn't that be a hell of a lot better as an animated movie? The unique art is what made Hard Boiled special, not the story for cryin out loud! Look at the Spawn movie and the Spawn animated series. The movie looked coll and all, but which is more faithful to the comic? (both in story and in style) And maybe...just maybe...an animated Hard Boiled would do so well that some forward thinking individual would come up with the brilliant Idea of an animated version of Millers masterwork...hell...the whole comics medium's masterwork...The Dark Knight Returns! Screw Batman 5!

It may happen but listen to this......

    by bastard x

As far as I am aware of, Frank and Geoff aren't the best of buds anymore.....anyone see the McFarlane toy of Marv from Sin City? Looks like our pal Marv has a chopped of head of Mr. Darrow in his possesion! If Darrow is involved Frank may be far away......but as long as Frank is on board (please o please o please....as screenwriter) The movie would ROCK!

    DR>DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

    by los gordos

I'm listening to it right now and the grimy, dark futuristic pulsations of DR.DOOOM (aka Kool Kieth) would be perfect for the subway, Hollywood and Vine and porno emporium scenes of The Wachowski's HARD BOILED. If this project comes to fruition we will finally get the ultimate METAL HURLANTE, psychedelic underground comic movie of all time!!!

Why aren't Frank & Geof friends anymore?

    by wesley snipes

What happened between Frank Miller and Geof Darrow? Didn't they do The Big Guy & Rusty the Boy Robot
together? Are you saying there won't be a sequel to that series? shit! Anybody think Frank Miller should just shut his trap sometimes? :) Put down those pitchforks, Miller fans! I'm just saying that the guy shoots his mouth off about everything, and sometimes he sounds more bitter than reasonable.

    Cage and Marvel

    by jasper stillwell

Miller is cool. The best, 'nuff said. When are we gonna get a sniff at his version of Daredevil for the screen? And what is it with Nicolas Cage and Marvel? There is only one Iron Man/Tony Stark and that's Alec Baldwin,(he'd of been a great Batman too), he's good looking, he can act and he's as intense as hell. Cage is a cartoon, a very funny one, as the Coens found out, but a cartoon nevertheless. He (and Burton) should keep the hell away from Superman too. Paul Gross (is it?)the guy from Due South has gotta be the man for the job, he can play 'heroic' with the right amount of humour and dignity. But sadly he has the box-office pull of a burst sewage main...ah well....
