BNAT Footage Fest: Massawyrm says PUSH comes to shove!!
Hola all. Massawyrm here.
If there was one major mistake in what studios brought to show us, it was the folks who treated us to some Push footage. It’s not that the footage was unimpressive or bad – it was that they didn’t bring the trailer to show along with it. When Harry asked how many of us had seen the footage, half a dozen people in the audience responded. And until you’ve seen that trailer, you have no idea what it is or why we’re supposed to think it’s cool.
For the record, Push is one of the films I am eagerly awaiting next year. The trailer is killer. It sells the film as Firestarter on Meth – a rapid fire, ticking clock film about a pair of powerful psychics on the run from a government program that turns people like themselves into weapons. Pretty standard stuff for comic book fans, but the look and feel of it is raw and pretty damned cool. So I was pretty stoked to see the footage. But barely anyone else had any idea what they were looking at outside of seeing a superhero movie from a property they were unfamiliar with (it’s an original.)
The footage we watched was two scenes, both of which appear a couple of times in the trailer. The first was a moderately interesting scene in which guys who scream really loud shatter fish tanks and make fish explode inside them while Dakota Fanning and Chris Evans run from other gun wielding folks. Cool looking, but out of context didn’t really have much of a payoff. It became known as the “exploding fish” sequence to the post-BNAT crowd.
The other was actually quite cool. It was a full on duel between two telekinetics, Chris Evans and the thug of supposedly telepathic Djimon Hounsou. That was the scene that was pretty rockin’, with both guys throwing the other around while floating guns around corners to unload into one another. There was also an awful lot of bullet deflecting going on, pushing this even further out of the Psychic Power Sci-fi oeuvre that it at first appears and deeper into the flashy comic book movie realm. It’s pretty damned cool and a great action sequence that evoked exactly the kind of thing we always see in comics and always wish we could see on screen.
That said, this genre lives and dies in the execution of the story, and frankly, the whole Weapon X thing is starting to get a little stale, so this really needs to have some kick ass story elements going on – none of which they showed us this weekend. But I’m keeping my fingers crossed. This has the potential to be something really neat along the lines of Firestarter or Highlander. Or it could just be this year’s Jumper, fun but altogether hollow. Let’s just hope it’s not something far, far worse. We’ll find out in about 6 weeks.
Until next time friends, smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em.

That's all I have

Dakota usually gets on my nerves (unlike Anna Sophia Robb). At least I don't mind hearing her in CORLINE.

Tommy Chong is the Manadrins father. Ew.com

Not trying to be a hater, but I was at BNAT and the Push footage was laughably bad. Not the effects so much as the acting. There is some Asian villain who always screws up his face like he is about to take an evil shit everytime he uses his "push" power. It made me chuckle every time. Also, Chris Evans is just a fucking boring actor. He was okay in Fantastic Four, but I feel like he tends to be a pretty blank slate, and he seems no different here. The whole thing seemed like a cheap Sci-Fi Channel TV movie. Lame.
The Nicolas Cage movie footage looked awesome though! -

SERIOUSLY.....SOME OF THOSE "BUSTED TEES" GIRLS ARE AMAZING
by earthquake westcoast
Some of the girls modeling for BUSTED TEES (See ad in top right) are really hot!
As for PUSH, I'm glad Camille Belle is getting more roles. She's a good actress. Dah, I still remember seeing her as a cute kid in JURASSIC PARK:THE LOST WORLD. Now, she SHOULD of been Jeff Golbum's daughter in the film, not the other girl they got. The other actress was horrible. -

The trailer made me much less interested
by i_am_not_the_droid_you_are_looking_for
It reminded me of Jumper. And that's not a good thing.

Actually, this is the footage I enjoyed the least at all of BNAT. But who knows as we only saw a few minutes worth.

Discuss.

I agree that the trailer looks sucktastic. And I reserve sucktastic for thinks that look really sucktastically awful. I'd love to be proved wrong but it seems to be X-Men lite to me, and X-Men lite don't exist in this dojo. So get off my lawn.

Hope that's not a hoax.

Jumper was not bad, and I didn't think it was "hollow" either, but it left a lot of room for a sequel. The movie to avoid is Wanted. That thing went to shit. Morgan Freeman as an irredeemable villain was the only highlight (I'll give McAvoy credit for being a good action man by the end of it--but his character was shit).
-
I'd love to see a sequel as I think it was conceived as a trilogy. The idea of Jamie Bell's character going bad and Sam Jackson becoming a good guy has me interested.
-
Is absolutely correct. The footage we saw just looked awful. Awful acting, really not impressed with the effects. I was thinking they took everything bad about Jumper, combined it with cheesy gun gimmicks that made people laugh at Wanted (which was otherwise an AWESOME film) and set them to actors from the WB crowd. I wasn't impressed by the trailer, and this footage reinforced that.
If it's supposed to be a good movie, and the studio wants good word of mouth, they should have brought the whole movie, but this crap looked like a turd-smothered douche.
In 24 hours of screen goodness, this was so bad I'd blocked the memory and had to read your review just to remember what the title 'Push' referred to. -
Because unless that was meant to be hilarious, it really, really didn't work.

Battle Angel Alita will be fucking our eyeballs in 20XX?

"This has the potential to be something really neat along the lines of Firestarter or Highlander." Okay, I can sort of see thinking the latter was cool in a silly, Conan the Scotsman kinda way, but... Firestarter? Really? Firestarter?
-
I don't know if I'll check this out in the theater, but I'll definitely check it out on DVD.

FIRESTARTER... FIRESTARTER... really scared and awed me as a yo
by brokenheadstuff
did 'real world' "superpowers" right. fear, danger, crazy murderous pedophile pirates; dickhead G-men.. AMAZING movie. too many recent movies and TV shows TRY too hard. "hey look we're just like comic books!" hey, no, you're not. the way Heroes has been going since -hell, the second half of season One, I bet that a year from now you'll see flashes of text BANG, POW, WHOOOOSH, on the fucking screen.
-
that message looks nothing like it did in my head a few minutes ago. i sound like a tool. "awed me as a yo(ung kid). "AWED me" like i'm some hackney limey tosser wanker magicians assistant "E 'awed me in 'alf 'e did!"
and somehow i copied the firestarter dot dot dot twice. whatever ... gonna go take a walk in the snow now. beautiful michigan slush. -
If Heroes had the budget of Push, it'd be the best live-action comic-book property around. As it stands, they still manage sporadically to create awesome action sequences with a limited budget, like when Peter and Sylar throw down in S3.
-
Even drunk you make a decent case for it, I'll give you that. I remember it as a suckfest (though far, FAR from the worst movie ever to have Stephen King's name on it), but I see what you're saying.
-
i'm not gonna be a douche and presume you're gonna go "oh i remembered it wrong" But -if you come accross it in a bargain-bin I would consider letting it make its own case, cuz now that i'm sober i think i could'a done a better job. heh I remember thinking I was gonna go On an On about it, but in reality i barely got a coherent sentence out before i started bashing Heroes- sheesh
