Published at:  Dec 16, 2008 12:19:54 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

James L. Brooks has cast Reese Witherspoon in his sixth directorial effort, a Sony project with three main characters tentatively titled “How Do You Know?”

Shooting is set to start in March on the project, Brooks’ first as a writer-director since “Spanglish.”

No logline yet, but all of Brooks' prior movies have been romantic comedy-dramas.

Brooks’ previous directorial efforts were “Terms of Endearment,” “Broadcast News,” “I’ll Do Anything” and “As Good As It Gets.”

He also co-created "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and scripted the hilarious Burt Reynolds vehicle "Starting Over."

I want to see a restored version of I'll Do Anything.

    by rev. slappy

Put the songs back in it and release it on DVD. Of course the irony of I'll Do Anything is it was all about focus group research ruining movies and it was itself a movie ruined by focus group research.

Spanglish was horrible. I hope he's gotten it together now. I hope Witherspoon knows what the hell she's doing. She needs a credible hit.

the simpsons. but James L brookes was vital to getting that show off the ground. When you think about how many great things he has done. Wow what a legacy. He now presides over the longest running tv show in modern times. The simpsons when it does leave our screen will have been on the air for an incredible 23 years. thats some achievement.

Man did Spanglish suck. I mean it really did.

    by cotton mcknight

There are movies that come along every once in awhile that kind of meander around to their conclusion- Dan in Real Life and The Family Stone come to mind- and it's very enjoyable to go on that ride and see how everything shapes up. Spanglish TRIES to do that but it's a big freaking mess. There are some good scenes in it but the ending is absolutely garbage. I mean it's one of the most unsatisfying endings I have ever seen in a movie. It just.. ends with a voiceover. The maid leaves, you don't know what happened to ANY of the principal characters, and you get this voiceover from the kid all growed up who explains that her mom made the right decision. Uh okay.

Agreed that Spanglish was ass would like to see I'll Do Anything

    by stormwatcher

But yeah Spanglish, man that sucked, made the Family Man look like Citizen Kane as done by Brett Ratner, which means it still would suck. Although there was one great scene in Family man, when he's trying on a Zegna suit and tells his wife that it makes him a better person. Man, I agree, I feel like a better person wearing my Hugo Boss suits. Call it shallow, cuz it is probably, but its as true a statement ever committed to film, while maybe not as gravitas as something else... wait did I just compliment Bret Ratner? Frak I should hit dele

Katie Holmes acting makes me sick too

    by stormwatcher

Don't bring peanut butter into this, I love peanut butter, don't want it associated with the bad taste she leaves in my mouth. Christ didn't anyone know that Dawson's Creek sucked, was her suckage less visible since eveyrone just blamed Kevin Williamson? Oh and what the hell was up with the love he got in the 90's? Christ was he a shitty writer. Thank god Whedon survived to go on.

    Brooks' Brilliance

    by adrian marcato

Yes Spanglish was a bad film. Hollow and devoid of what makes Brooks' films engaging: good characters. I'll do Anything is underrated, Nick Nolte is flawless, he is a mad genius in my opinion, and the film showcases his acting abilities brilliantly. Brooks is a master of dialogue and drama, and even a film like As Good as It Gets, while endlessly sappy, is worthy of mild praise. I doubt he'll pull something great out of this film, but I'm hoping the negative feedback from basically everyone over Spanglish will spark his creative abilities more than he has embraced in a long time. But, this one will not get me excited until after I watch it and can judge it on its own merits. Brooks' stumbles have forced that hand, from the looks of it, all of us on this talkback feel the same way.
