THE PHANTOM Gets Modernized In THE PHANTOM LEGACY!?
Merrick here...
This sounds suspiciously like the kind of project that may never get off the ground. Still...
Seems a sequel/successor to 1996's (Simon Wincer-directed) THE PHANTOM is in the works. An Australian production company has secured the rights to THE PHANTOM LEGACY, which it hopes to producer in Australia.
The latest adaptation, which is expected to cost $87 million, will focus on "the Father/Son relationship, and what it means to be The Phantom," scriptwriter Tim Boyle said in a statement. "The film will be set in the present day and will deal with the concept of destiny."

...Billy Z won't have the slab-muscled body of the first one.
-
And begins to organise her flight back to Hollywood, until Michael Douglas slaps her across the face, crushes her dreams with his eighty-year old hands and then chains her naked to the bed once more.
-
Until the reality of not being first punches him in the face.
-
...zzzzzzz.
-
woooooo
-
but seriously who would make a sequel to that movie?
-
Okay, I'll stop posting here now.
-
Whatever happened to him?
-
'UN...BEE....LIEV....ABLE!!!!!'
-
The worst catchphrase ever.
-
I loved the Billy Zane movie, pure unadulterated fun. Thats all you want this sort of movie to be, really.
-
was actually called Sniper. This one only damaged it badly enough to force him to accept a supporting role in Sniper.
And then it was Tales from the Crypt and a self-referrential in-joke from Zoolander, and well that's caught us all up on Billy Zane how, hasn't it? -
Light and amusing. A nice companion to the other failed pulp revivals of the '90s, like THE SHADOW or THE ROCKETEER.
-
for finding scoops about The Phantom and The Crow on SuperheroHype hours after everyone else was already aware of them, but I wont. He actually managed to post these on the same day, and not 3 days later as is the usual AICN way.
-
What happened to Billy Zane? So what if you're bald Billy, get a wig, buff up, and come back to us. We need you back, you rocked.
-
it was a surprisingly good movie, considering the source. And Zane didnt need no stupid rubber muscle suit, he actually made the spandex credible by WORKING OUT in a GYM! Try that one, Bale!
-
I have NO idea why, when my friends and I have a movie night, nobody ever wants to come around my place for the event.
-
I imagine Zane leaping off his couch and running for his phone.
-
are you a chick?
-
Hollywood, are you listening?
-
To me, the Phantom was all spirit and gumption. If all cheesy action filmmakers had that much spunk, movies would never be boring.
-
No, I'm a mighty eagle with feathers of steel.

notr a bad idea, plus glad its not an official reboot
by indyabbey jones
the idenetity of the phantom changes from generation to generation, so its cool to think that billy zan's phantom had kids who then had a kid and that kid is now the phantom..i say bring it on
-
the Phantom is hilarious - dude in purple tights blends in seamlessly with his lush green jungle surroundings. SLAM EVIL!!!!
-
it's a shame.
-
Make sure it isn't intermission.
-
the first one was horrible
And Zane is a ham
-
The Phantom was a good movie! Sure, the too-purply suit was a mistake, but it was designed well and Zane was the shizzle! A fun, adventurous and humorous barrel o' monkeys. A "re-imagining" is just the ticket.
-
Think about it. Some Marty-McFlyesque kid finds the missing rocket pack, and uses it to fight a neo-Nazi cult that wants to create an army of rocketmen bent on destroying Washington, D.C. If Crow's geting remade, Rocketeer should at least get a distant sequel. Or Flight of the Navigator, for fuck's sake!
-

Wow! The one movie I thought would never be remade...
by spectrebeeyatch
So the studios are just giving up. Any original screen play tossed out the window bring on the Phantom! I love the original it's filled with great laughs I know I'll watch it again before seeing this new one whenever it comes out.
-
So chin up.
Anyway, wasn't Billy Zane in some Turkish-made, anti-American movie not too long ago? Presumably that finally did his career in for good. -
Was a Turkish produced film called Valley of the Wolves, that was not only anti American but anti Semitic as it depicted a curious twist on the Blood Libel with Gary Busey playing a Jewish doctor stealing body parts from captured Iraqis for transplant into Jews in America, England, and Israel.
-
Does anyone else like how shitty and over-the-top he was in the original? I'll be happy with the original turd and one of my personal favorite floating yams, The Shadow, golden from beginning to end.
-
"SHOW ME THE POWER!" wasn't picked up as a catchphrase like that other SHOW ME THE... one was.
-
nothing like shitty z-list serial and comic characters to make for unintentional comedy!
-
In an interview he said his Everwood character was an offshoot from his Phantom character. He then slammed the reporter interviewing him in the face. true story - look on youtube.
-
and a 3-hour director's cut, no less!
-
All I've got is a stupid non-anamorphic DVD.
-
you dumb shit. bale is notorious for being a bad ass and working out almost TOO much for his roles.
-
...he's a cool dude - he knows what's up. PUT A CORK IN IT, ZANE.
-
I am singlehandedly working on Billy Zane's comeback to movies people are going to see. It's true. He's a talented chap and he's going to have a nice middle period to his career. The key is comedy and playing into his 'image' or whatever that means. Mark my words, it's coming.
-
As for this next . . . I get as tired of posting this comment as you get tired of reading it, but . . .
TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN. -
The Rocketeer is a great film.
-
The Phantom, The Shadow, The Spirit (inevitably)...they're all box office bombs. These characters simply aren't in the public consciousness. Nobody cares about them save for hardcore comic historians. This is a guaranteed recipe for failure.

...but The Phantom sucked. Sorry, Billy Zane. In order to work on the big screen without being ridiculous, the character needs to be re-thought; you can't have a guy in head to toe purple tights and a black mask running around in broad daylight in a steaming hot tropical jungle. When the story shifted to the city, it reminded me of the bad Shadow movie with Alec Baldwin. The only good scene in The Phantom is the horse chase through the park which was lifted directly from James Cameron's True Lies' horse and motorcycle chase.
-
...had just the tone that I wish a Superman movie would have (as well as the period setting). What a fun, campy, witty and charming movie! My favorite Billy Zane role...his line deliveries were priceless. KRISTY SWANSON: "Your dog is a wolf..." Billy Zane (grinning boyishly): "I know..." I would imagine that many of the people who piss on this movie are immature males for whom everything has to be "badass", and who find the past "gay". I am not looking forward to this "sequel" or whatever it is...Does everything have to be updated for public consumption these days? No doubt it will be "dark" too, just like everyone wants everything to be now. The only thing giving me hope is that -- seeing as it's an Australian production -- maybe Simon Wincer is involved, to give it a sense of direct continuity to the original. "THERE IS NO SMOKING IN THE SKULL CAVE..."
-
I don't know why but The Rocketeer and The Phantom get passes from me. They're enjoyable as light entertainment and for what they were but I don't think there's an audience for a remake/sequel/reimagineering. As much as I love The Rocketeer I don't think there's enough people who'd want to see it updated. I think I was just on the way into discovering Indiana Jones when these films came out and they fit right into that same niche... I guess for me it was my version of the old fashioned serials of the early days of film.
-
He's so unappreciated - like a good wall outlet.
-
I have little faith in this new film.
-
It was acting!"
-
DUUUUULLLL is the only way to describe The Phantom and the sequel sounds even worse.
-
oh it's the other one...
-
i like it because it's no a random number at all
-
A nobody from Marvel comics who spawned a film-trilogy and a TV series. So it's possible for the Phantom to become a hit. Not likely, but possible.
-
Looks like you're in the minority dude. Just shaddup, if you're saying purple suit is bad... well thats what the Phantom is! Maybe Batman should change is colour from black to... sepia brown. Or blue, that's in right now. Yep that'd work.
-
Billy Zane as The Phantom doing public service announcements on TV in the style of He-Man when he used to give the moral at the end of each story...and I quote - "I hoped you enjoyed today's adventure story. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we did have a real time wheel? We could turn it back to the Stone Age and meet some real cave people. Or into the future where we could see some of the wondrous things yet to come. Well we don't have a magic time wheel, not yet anyway. But we do have some things just about as good. They're called books. Reading books can be your time wheel to just about anytime or place you choose. Why don't you give them a try? You'll be glad you did."
-
Slam Catherine Zeta Jones!
-
I love it almost as much as the FLASH GORDON movie. It's pure, campy fun, and that's really what I want from my serial-inspired films. DARK KNIGHT has only just come out on video, and I'm already sick of the tsunami of overly-serious superhero films we have in store for us.
-
or dont.
-
ive never understood the appeal of that film. Yes, I see they were going for "camp", but even then, it's simply horrible.
-
There's a fantastic movie in that premise, but while Wincer's movie was lush and fun, it missed out on the potential... And I have pretty low expectations for this new version.
-
I can see people finding FLASH GORDON too ridiculous to give a shit about, but actually *hating* it? Come on.
-
Alex Ross makes a pretty good case for it in the FG extras. Neither Sam Jones nor his voice-over could act their way out of a paper bag, but it had a hell of a supporting caset - Topol, Blessed, Sydow, Dalton - and great colors/costumes
-
Donkey Punch Evil!
-
You're absolutely right. My biggest fear is that they really go for a much darker tone in the next Superman. That would be so out of character.
-

The Rocketeer was a great movie and holds up really well
by lovecraftfan
Seriously whats with the hate for that one.
-
I spit my coffee out reading Donkey Punch Evil! Excellent work.
-
I can't imagine what it would have been like with Bruce as The Phantom instead of Zane. It still would have sucked major ass, but in a much better way.
-
Really cool. Dodgy effects, but hey, a childhood favourite. Just that right mix of light hearted action-adventure. And the DVD cost me $6 AUD. Fantastic.
-
k...so ben stiller did have some great lines....
-
...for a Rocketeer, Phantom, The Shadow, triple feature.
-
zane did have a recurring role in twin peaks where he banged sherilyn fenn in an airplane b4 she got blowed up!
-
I rented The Phantom once as a kid and found it so boring that I turned it off, which it was pretty rare for me to not watch a movie in it's entirety back then, slam evil....
-
I'll bet you do Zeta Jones
-
Disney dropped that film like a bad habit and that sucks! Such a great film, such a crappy DVD
-
I planned on netflixing The Rocketeer soon and now I learn it has a crappy dvd? shit!
-
I still have the promotional rings that 7-11 gave out when the movie was released all those years ago when I was a young lad. God Damn I had such a high for that movie. Always hoped they'd resurrect it some day.
-
and one dressed as an apple be in
it too? The guy dressed as a leaf
will be the traitor of the bunch and will try to lead them to a Jamba Juice to be hedonists' delights. -
kicked all sorts of ass.
-
Not like that crappy Phantom in the mid nineties.
I'm glad an Australian company is handling it because the Phantom is an honourary Australian.
Cast Paul Hogan as the father. Eric Bana as The phantom.
Shoot in Cairns.
Get WETA on outfit.
George Miller to direct.
-
Ha ha! Simon Wincer. He raped my - the director of The Phantom, see, he - Hey...didja hear what I said? I said he "raped my childhood". Ha Ha. Hello?Jeez. Bunch of sourpusses.
-
Yet see if you can see Paul Hogan taking off the Phantom on his TV show. Funny.
-
Badly. That show was great. Don't even care about the rest of the Phantom lore that spawned it. But hopefully if this movie gets made someone will decide to release a 2040 box set to cash in.

1.) hallmitchell? 2.) Defenders of the Universe
by vote fa stokes brutha
1.) How is the Phantom honorary Australian? I like that fact, and Bana would make a great Kit Walker, but I'm just curious what you mean.
2.) I rented this King Features 80's cartoon from Netflixxx hoping to get some Phantom goodness but it turned out to be about his daughter and Flash Gordon's son. AWFUL. Bonus points, though, for Mandrake's cape being starched into a firm billow. -
I am used to you pulling shit out of your ass but really, are you just making stuff up in order to sound as stupid as possible? Zane had to take a supporting role in Sniper because The Phantom bombed? Then he went on to make Tales from the Crypt? How the fuck is that possible? Does Billy Zane have a time machine that I am not aware of? Tales and Sniper both came out in '93 - three years before The Phantom. In short, do you just make shit up and hope nobody notices?
-
Zane was actually the first actor to muscle up for an onscreen superhero role and look superheroic
No rubber muscles -
....that nobody's made a shitty "Phantom Menace" joke. 'Cause there's bound to be a million of 'em...
-
time will tell...
-
too bad the 7-11 ring was made to fit, and only fit, the Asian slave children that made them.
-
I think you are right... it was so bad that it kinda circled around and made its way back to good... sort of like Alec Baldwin's The Shadow that appeared around the same time.
-
Those little black and white issues were the only ones I could afford (and one of the few regularly available here in Australia) I loved those stories, and the Phantom is a terrific character. So it would be good to see it done right (the Zane flick was good stupid fun, but I want serious fun). Focussing on the father/son succession thing is key, so I'm glad they're looking at it from that angle. I was telling a friend of mine a few weeks back that it is the angle to approach the character from.
-
Hi.
The phantom's biggest foreign markets are Australia and Sweden.
He outsells every comic sold in Australia. Aussies love the Phantom. -
Please don't treat this kiddy. Please don't dumb it down. Treat this with the type of respect Batman has been getting lately.
-
Right off the top of my head, I can think of far more worthy remakes.
1. Tarzan
2. Conan
3. National Velvet
4. The Grapes of Wrath
5. The Lady from Shanghai -
Billy Zane is cool just for having kissed her...
-
It was defiantly corny, it had an attitude like "YES I'm wearing a purple costume, and WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT?" At that time everything was trying to copy Batman's dark gothicness, but not that one, they got him riding a white horse through the jungle in day time. And I like how he represents the African tribes and steals back their treasures from the colonialists, I don't know of another character like that.

I never got the bitching about this movie....
by dannyglovers_dickblood
....awesome campy adventure film with a light, fun tone. Beautifully shot, good music, hot females, Billy Zane is good in the role. What the fuck?
-
I'm pretty sure it's because of the purple costume. No matter how good the movie was or could have been, a dude in a purple costume is hard to take seriously.
-
write the script, since they seemingly have a fondness for the pulps, through the ribbing they give it in their show.
-
I haved always loved [lusted] after you, Kristy Swanson. I loved you in The Phantom. I loved you in The Chase. I've never seen your Buffy movie but I'm sure I'd love you in it. You are beautiful. I want to be on a reality TV ice skating show with you. I'm not married but you can steal me away from all the other females and I can impregnate you.I don't know what I just wrote. I blacked out.
-
Actually, the Phantom is one of my favorite superhero movies. Another one that I feel is underrated was the original Captain America with Darren McGavin and Matt Salinger. Sometimes a good B movie can be better than a big budget blockbuster if it has heart. In someways , I still prefer the goofy Roger Corman version of the Fantastic Four over the recent movies, except that I really enjoyed Michael Chiklis' portrayal of Ben Grimm. The one thing I fear is that eventually superhero movies will be a slave to big budget effects and the stories will take a back seat to what toys they can market.
-
I've never seen The Phantom, but I saw a behind the scenes "making of-" and tons of clips and it always LOOKED fun and cool. They always made me laugh, just like that clip. Didn't it bomb horribly though?
I NEED to see this damn thing. -
I think part of the reason for The Phantom's bad ep comes from the fact that "Slam Evil" is one of the worst tag lines of all time, and yet, everyone remembers it because of it's pure rediculousness. Yet the film itself, written by the late Jeffrey Boam, who also wrote Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade, The Lost Boys, Lethal Weapon 2 & 3, most of The Adventures of Brisco County jr (as well as creating the show), Innerspace, Straight Time & the original Dead Zone film adaptation, was actually a hell of a lot of fun. Yeah, the guy wears a purple outfit in the jungle, but he always has, so you have to give the makers props for actually being true to the source material and just going for it, and if you can accept that the film is a lot of goofy fun, has a great, and apt, pulp serial feel, and Zane was great fun in the lead. It's no classic, but it's certainly a lot better than it's reputation would have people believe.
-
The purple costume is unique to the Phantom. Yet should be changed for the next movie. Due to purple standing out so badly in the jungle.
How about dark black with tiger stripes. Like the special forces in NAM?
They didn't go with the blue and yellow for Wolverine. -
fucking horrible direction and acting....just utter shit
-
Now you'll see what happens to Capt Panaka!
-
PHANTOM OWNZ
-
...will live forever because of the awesomeness of the "cowboy dance" in Demon Knight. That scene is comedy gold.
As for you purple constume haters, don't pretend you'd want a black leather clad Phantom instead. -
...goes for you COStume haters, too.
-
So now they are remaking movies that bombed? What's next, the sequel to Battlefield Earth?
I'm sorry but no one cared about the Phantom 20 years ago, what makes them think kids want to go see a movie about a character their grandfather grew up with? -
for the Mutt and Jeff or Pogo movie.
-
I thought I was the only one who liked it. Was it perfect? No. But it had a fun quality to it. Whoever said that it belongs in the 90s Pulp Films along with "The Shadow" and "The Rocketeer" was right on.Grandadmiralsnackbar, sorry about the coffee. I'll send you a Starbucks coupon.

Cool. Thanks! I love how at the end of Wincer's Phantom film they just show a bunch of gorgeous shots of (presumably) Bengalla... as if there were great establishing shots that never were able to be used in the narrative, so they just kind of tagged them at the end... Although having WHAT the Phantom is fighting for end the movie IS a neat idea.
-
Everyone digs the PHANTOM!
-
fuck it up its s&m dick-travelled asshole. i'mi here to be whisked away to a magica land of colorful badguys and villains not watch how it would be like in "reality".
-
what zoolander says to zane. thx for the correction
-
Starring CGI enhanced Ben Stiller, fucking your black eyeballs in 2011
-
First film wasn't fantastic, but it had its moments. Not everything has to be black on black dark like the latest Batman movie. Personally, I would rather see the film take place back in the day like the first one, but maybe we can get some flashbacks instead.
-
Loved and religiously read the comics as a kid, and the movie adaptation wasn't bad at all! I'm down with this, please don't fuck it up and 'modernize' it! Not everything can be the Dark Knight!
