    I liked the other trailer

    by MJDeViant

from comic-con or whatever better. where they get shot by a firing squad. I think this looks WAY better then the Xmen movies (which were all dumb IMO) but that doesn't mean it's in the clear. I used to watch the cartoons when I was little and all I ever wanted was for him to get to kill people with his blades and not have Cyclops say "Wolverine! NOooo!" and blast him off them. Here's hoping.

  • Dec. 15, 2008, 1:07 p.m. CST

    Looks damn good!

Geek curiosity...who is the bald, shirtless, dude with blades fighting Wolvie for a second or two closer to the end? Are we supposed to know him? What about the asian dude flashed during the "special team" montage?

Judging by the martial arts/physicality I'm guessing that it's Scott Adkins, playing Weapon X1. Adkins is a really kick ass martial artist/actor. Check out the D2V sequel to Undisputed: Undisputed II: Last Man Standing. It's actually a great Guy Guilty Pleasure. Look him up on IMDB for more info.

  • Dec. 15, 2008, 1:29 p.m. CST

    I think...

    by cookepuss

...that the "asian dude" is Maverick/Agent Zero. The bald guy could be a scarred Deadpool at some later point in the film. It could also be Weapon XI.

    Getting Better, Fox

    by socalactor

Gambit, Frost, Blob, Wolvie killing fools. Already sounds way better than X3. Plus, say what you will, but I actually think Taylor Kitsch perfectly embodies that "I don't know. I may swindle you, f$%k you, or just kill you. I don't really care." aspect of Gambit.

  • Dec. 15, 2008, 1:31 p.m. CST

I wouldn't worry about us seeing...

    by cookepuss

... Emma Frost, Beak, or any other wacky mutant cameo. I think that it'll be that we see them in an escape from Weapon X and that's it. It looks like Wolverine uses his claws to crack open their holding cells.

Maybe I'll cast some nerd curse for this, but: aren't the claws made of adamantium? Which were given to him through the "experiment"? Why does he have them being a kid? Gilkuliehe: regarding bone claws

    by djtelesca

Several years ago, Magneto pulled the adamantium from Wolvie's body, and it was revealed that he had bone claws and that the adamantium just was absorbed into them as it did with his bones. At the time, it seemed that he didn't know he had them prior to the Weapon X program. Hope that helps!

    Questions, if anyone knows

    by Spaderific

    1) Early in the trailer, when Stryker's talking about the special team, we see the Blob, then Deadpool, then a black guy and an asian guy. Which mutant is the black guy supposed to be? I think someone earlier in the talkback said the asian dude is Maverick. 2) Maybe I'm getting behind on my backstories, but since when did Wolverine willingly choose to lose his memory? 3) Are they going to CGI in Gambit's eye color?

    by Frodo T. Baggins

They have done several things correctly. I couldnt tell when he was a kid if those were bone claws or not, but that would be awesome. Smart too for hollywood incase they ever want Magneto to rip out his ademantium. Also showing Wolverine is many wars, also great. Father? eh...And isnt his love interest suppose to be Lady Deathstrike? X2 pooped the bed on that. Blob's placement works. Still have no idea about Beak. Deadpool BETTER be in FUCKING costume. And Gambit needs to look a little more suited up too. All in all. Bad ass.

Looking forward to the movie.

  • Dec. 15, 2008, 2:21 p.m. CST

    Looks good.

X Men 3 was always going to be a mediocre, because of the director. But this looks good. I hope they don't fuck it up. I always liked the glimpses of Wolverine's backstory, in X2, so hopefully, if the script is good, this will be a corker. Jackman is a great actor. I don't think anyone can doubt, that the guy made the part his own, and I am sure, he would have some creative influence in it. Lets hope the fucker, doesn't start dancing in it though.

Gavin Hood, please edit out the bad wirework!

    by DEX

Just a pet peeve. Does Sabretooth running on all fours look goofy to anyone else? There's also that slo-mo shot of Wolverine getting thrown through the wall and you can see him kind of wobble on the axis where the wire would be attached. Other than that, it looks pretty decent.

  • Dec. 15, 2008, 2:27 p.m. CST

    by name818

The bald dude with the blades coming out of his arms is probably Deadpool after his scarring. Leave to Fox execs to think it'd be fucking cool to parallel Wolverine and rape another good character. Do all Wolvies'enemies have to have healing factors and fucking claws?!?

  • Dec. 15, 2008, 2:32 p.m. CST

    Limburger, anyone?!

    by RetroActive

Looks cheesy...especially the fat suit Blob. I'm not crazy about Gambit being in this movie, because it tells me they're going to screw up the story. Also, Liev Schriber as Sabretooth, after he was physically cast so well in the first X-Men movie doesn't make any sense to me. I always liked how Wolverine and Sabretooth had out of control hair, like everything about them was inherently wild. Plus, the announcement that the studio is taking a "wait and see" approach tells me they don't like the movie, either. I hope I'm wrong...

You guys are just too critical...

    by topfivevideo

Seriously, the X-Men cannon is just too freakin huge to cover just about everything in it. You have to be able to sit there and take the movie for what its worth... so maybe a character doesn't look exactly how he or she did in the comic book... so what if they're not doing exactly what they did in the comic book. You have to look at this movie and ask is it true to the spirit of the book. After reading some of these talkbacks concerning comic book movies I am starting to realize one thing... that is that you f'n geeks need to just sit and be f'n grateful that these movies are even being made. Quit your god damn bitching. When X-Men first came out everyone was pissing and moaning that they needed to do a Wolverine flick... now that they're doing one all you guys are bitching that they're not doing it right. Ungrateful fucking nerds!

Q: "Which mutant is the black guy supposed to be?"<p> <p> A: John Wraith : <p> <p> "I think someone earlier in the talkback said the asian dude is Maverick."<p> <p> That was me and he is. Just check IMDB for Agent Zero.<p> <p> Q: "but since when did Wolverine willingly choose to lose his memory?"<p> <p> A: They're probably playing a little fast & loose with how much he knows about what Weapon X was doing, but you have to remember that not all of Wolverine's memory loss was due to trauma. Given the fact that Silver Fox gets killed, I'm pretty sure that that's one thing this long lived mutant might want to forget. It's not that much of a stretch.<p> <p> Q: "Are they going to CGI in Gambit's eye color?"<p> <p> A: Possible I suppose. They did it with Storm. It's not totally necessary though. If they wanted to do it, they would have probably already partially done it via contacts. No contacts? Seeming unlikely. It's a small detail really. Not like they made him a midget or anything.

  • Dec. 15, 2008, 2:54 p.m. CST

Not too reliant on the CGI either. Although Gambit looked even cooler than Wolverine, which is odd.

  • Dec. 15, 2008, 2:56 p.m. CST

    by cookepuss

It's not an Ultimate X-Men anything. The Roman numeral system used for here is right out of Morrison's New X-Men run. AFAIK, they got up to Weapon XV. Weapon X splintered off from the main Weapon Plus program and continued to do biz outside of them. It's totally in continuity stuff. Not Ultimate.

having read the "Origins" comics - I like that they seem to be including those to an extent - esp "Logan"'s early years. Looks like they may have done justice to Gambit - depending on when/age they have Wolverine meeting him. *starts to plan out the 2009 movie bux*

    general feel

    by u.k. star

The general feel / look of the trailer is very good. Any of you guys seen the youtube one (I think is of the other trailer with the firing squad), where the audience was just going wild? It fits in with the other movies. It's a shame that Marvel don't own the rigts to the x-men as then they could tie the whole thing with the new movie universe they're creating. Not sure why anyone would think X2 was a bad movie? It's often held up as one of the 5 best comic book movies out there. As for movie continuiy vs comic book continuity. They are different takes on the same characters and themes? The X-men toon from the early 90s didn't follow "cannon" any more than the Spider-man cartoons did. they were different, as are the movies. As long as they are GOOD and follow a certain spirit that's al that matters.

    by Zardoz

I have a bad feeling about this! It looks like they might be trying to cram too much backstory into one film. Given Fox's track record and the rumored troubles on the set, I doubt this will be any good. (but I sincerely hope that I'm wrong!) I did crap myself a little with the flying Wolvie shot at the end, though!

thoughts from someone who knows little about it

    by ArcadianDS

All I know of Wolverine is basically the superficial surface info. I was really surprised to learn that this story has something of a 'highlander' quantity to it. The problem I always have with these kinds of stories, however, is that they start out with someone as a child, who grows up to normal adulthood, and then just sort of ... stops. Hopefully, they find a logical reason for him to be 34ish for over 200 years.<p> Also, I thought Wolverine was part of some sort of Candian "so like, we can have mutants, too eh?" comic book - but the military uniforms looked like they were US DoD guys. Re-imagining?

    The claw issue is confusing

    by TheLastCleric

I've read a couple of the novelizations of Wolvie's origins and apparently,he didn't know about the bone claws for much of his own life. The scientists from the Weapon X project, at least in the novel I read, were surprised when the claws emerged after the procedure. I remember reading another novel where a pre-Weapon X Wolvie actually used knives in combat, again suggesting he never knew about the claws until later. The comics do have him using them as a child but supposedly, his mind has been erased more than once in his 130 plus years of life.

since I don't know everything about xmen or wolverine but like this trailer and like the answers provided in this talkback so far. Is that Sabretooth the young wolvie is impaling on the door? Does that make Sabretooth older than wolverine? I never read the comics but I know they always had long history of hatred against one another. Just wondering if that is part of the story. I am inferring that sabretooth killed his parents or something.

Put a cannon to XMen canon

    by Metrolang

First off, it is canon when you are talking about the established history of the comic and character. Cannon is a really, really, big, loud gun. The trailer looked, eh, to me. I'm not excited nor against it. I'll wait and see. Personally, I've never been a fan of the bone claws so i poo-poo on that.

  • Dec. 15, 2008, 5:13 p.m. CST

    Looks alright

    by Grendel745

There's a few shots that look a bit wonky (the one of Sabretooth on all fours comes to mind) but there's also definite claws into flesh action. I do like how they're incorporating different elements from the comics into their own "movie" version of Wolvie. He'd better still be Canadian though.

    The claws

    by shaft478

They come out of his hands when he's a child. His claws are bone and when Weapon X gifts him the adamantium the claws are covered in the metal. That's the official story and I'm glad they're putting that in the movie. Deadpool looks like a fag and he better get disfigured quickly.

This looks totally badass. I'm sorry, but I haven't seen a superhero trailer in a long time that had my heart thumping by the end of it. That looked feral, creepy, and hyper violent, charateristics none of the X-men movies captured at all.<p> Gavin Hood, the director, is the real deal. "Tsotsi" was an intense and quite moving film about a pre-teen gang member in South Africa who, after killing a white couple and stealing their money in a car, finds the couple's baby in the back seat, crying. The film won countless awards internationally, including a nomination for "Best Foreign Film" at the Oscars. Hood showed a tremendous aptitude for pulling great performances out of actors, and I can see he did the same thing in "Wolverine."<p> Can't wait for this!

    by allykatD

they would realize that young Logan in the trailer with bone claws is from Marvel Origins and IS canon. Silver Fox was Logan's first real love. Mariko was his second, whom he married... I believe he got married to her in Clarmont's "Wolverine". The lab scenes are from Weapon X by Barry Windsor-Smith, however, I think Logan was kidnapped and didn't volunteer. I have to drag out the comic and reread, but the movie looks to have borrowed heavily from that story as well.

Not really a studio apologist and I probably wont see this in the cinema. I don't eat every piece of shit that is spoon-fed to me. But what I don't do is sit here and bitch about really trivial shit. You saw Deadpool for a total of maybe 2 nanoseconds in the trailer and yet theres so many people are pissing and moaning about how bad the movies going to treat his character... there's no fucking way you could possibly know this so shut the fuck up! And yes be thankful that these movies are getting made... at least it shows that when all those people were crying out for a wolverine movie the studio answered. Fuck, be grateful that in our society we have the right to go to the movies. And I know, you have the right to do whatever the fuck you want and say whatever the fuck you want... just know that pissing and moaning about this shit is pointless because you have no clue how bad or good the movie is going to be until you see it. i had a problem with gambit in this movie, not that i'm a big fan of his (go deadpool!!!) but its the 60's. he'll be like 60 in the other movies if they used him, but i doubt that will happen, my prediction after seeing that jason (strikers son) frozen in the trailer is the gambit will be capture and frozen as well, thats probably what strikers team is doing, finding rogue and powerful mutants to capture and then freeze the more powerful ones until he can find a way to control them. well thats my theory anyways muhahaha...ha

The film includes numerous cameo appearances of younger versions of characters from the previous films, including X-Men Cyclops (Tim Pocock), a Weapon X captive [19], and Storm as a toddler (seen in the trailer); as well as, from X2, Jason Stryker, William's lobotomized telepathic son who he keeps on ice. It looks like something they would have done in Zoolander or in Austin Powers to be funny...and the following shot with the super CG shot of Jackman struggling to stay on the copter...pure shit...didn't sell me on anything. Why Is Gambit dressed like fucking Lou Bega. Im probably wrong but wasn't Wolvie's Ladie Asian in the comics? Really I don't need to see his backstory all the way to his pre-pube days. He's a killer, show me the Weapon X program, but make it look gritty as fuck, and really evil! This reminds me more of the lakluster feeling I had when I saw the trailer for Elektra. And P.S. Liev Schrieber just because you grow some chops on your face, and stick in some .99 cent teeth doesn't make you fucking Sabretooth! How the fuck did they sell the studio on you as sabretooth. I think your a great actor and have done some cool stuff, and you fuck Naomi Watts and get to suck on those really puffy nipples of her, but you playing sabretooth is like Screech playing bond. Your too soft man, bring back that wrestler guy, sure his acting might suck, but I wouldn't expect poetry from a guy who is an UNTAMED ANIMAL!! by Rocklover79

Correct if I'm wrong about the ratings system, but I don't think you can do a rape scene in a PG-13 movie unless it's incredibly vague and pans to the wall or something. With all of the violence that is going to be in this movie, the addition of a rape scene, even a vague one, could push the film into R territory. With that in mind, I doubt the rape is gonna be in.

I'm late getting in on this, but I don't think anyone else has touched on it. In the comics Sabertooth IS older than Wolvie, and at some point starts tracking down young Logan on his birthday every year no matter where he was in the world. Are we seeing an early birthday party during the "impaled to the door" shot? I don't remember exactly when this tradition started, but I'm sure it was back when Sabertooth claimed to be Wolverine's father, and most of the comic world assumed it was true. Anybody else remember that?

I'm not the biggest Wolverine fan, but I do remember something about birthday visits. Doesn't he beat Wolvie's ass each time?

...I love that there is no edit button on these boards. But, yes, Sabertoof beat the hell out of Wolverine each time just to prove that he could.

There will never be a great Wolverine movie

    by Rupee88

unless it's rated R. He is a dark character just like Batman. You can't do them right with PG-13, TDK certainly included.

I kind of agree. My favorite scene in Dark Knight is when Bats is interrogating Joker in the jail and kicking his ass all the while: WHERE IS HE?! Angry Bats = Cool.

  • Dec. 16, 2008, 11:33 a.m. CST

That was cool until the Die Hard 4

    by half vader

chopper bit. But it can't be as bad as X3... what an unbelievably wasted opportunity that end 'battle' was.

    Schreiber looks awful

    by Immortal_Fish

He does. Fangs and a trenchcoat? That's it? Couldn't they have done something with his hair to make it look different from every other movie he's been in?<P>Rest of the trailer looks okay, but this franchise needs a reboot. Singer's "Knifeyboy and his Mostly Mundane Friends" are not the X-Men.

that's the fucker with the yellow-black outfit and the mega blades that shoot out of his hands, isn't it? as i am not a kiddie fiddler i do not use myspace, will wait for the trailer to be available elsewhere i guess

Not the best trailer I could have hoped for. No, "OMFG this is gonna be SO awesome," moments. Even Liev Schrieber looks kinda silly, and he's usually gold (Jerry, GOLD!).

To those who want big-screen Sentinels...

    by Royston Lodge

Recipe for disaster, that would be. They would either end up being accused of trying to rip off Transformers (re: the Terminator Salvation talkbacks), or they'd really wuss out and make the Sentinels a giant gas cloud.

    character comments

    by oisin5199

I am curious about the time period here. At first I thought that Gambit doesn't fit in at all, but then I remembered that Gambit's immortal or something (he was the only X-Men still alive in Bishop's future, I recall) - he doesn't have a healing factor like Wolvie, but he doesn't age, so he can conceivably be in an earlier period. I don't have a problem with Cyke or Ororo being Weapon X prisoners, as that easily could have fit in with their back stories as orphans. I do have a bit of problem with Emma Frost, since her origin was always about being rich, privileged and telepathic. She was not an orphan but a member of a rich family. And the diamond thing doesn't come until later as her 'secondary mutation'. Maverick is German, not Asian, but I guess I can live with it. I have no problem with Schreiber as Sabretooth because he's a damn good actor, and I'm looking forward to seeing scenes with him and Jackman (not just the fight scenes). Tyler Mane may have looked decent (though not that great) in the role, but the character as written in the first X-Men film was nothing more than a blunt instrument, whereas the actual character from the comics was a psychopath with his own agenda and intelligent (not genius, but crafty), who played with people's heads just as much as the violence. And good luck with determining what's canon and what's not in Wolverine's history. They've changed it so many times, and retconned so many things, calling one thing or another a false memory, for instance. And the current Origins series (not to be confused with the decent Origin miniseries about his childhood), which is just crap, confused things even more. So far, I'm fairly happy with this. Can't wait to see it, so I can wash the taste of X-Men 3 out of my cinema mouth.

Is it possible that Wolverine meets Gambit in "current time", opposed to most of the movie being his back story? Maybe the end of the move picks up near X3 or afterwards and Logan is out on a recruiting mission?

    The timeline

    by shaft478

I read that they are trying to make this Wolverine movie and the beginning of the first X-Men seamless. I'm pretty sure the director was giving an interview and he said its perfect how the 2 tie in so easily. Also, I just read Weapon X from MCP on Marvel's website and its pretty good. I can't believe I haven't read that before.

The comic geek side of me thinks this looks pretty damned cool, but the talkbacker side of me still wants to express how I am better than Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, the director, and every person in hollywood associated with this film.

I was confused regarding Origin vs Origins. I just read 30 issues of Origins (yeah, I kept reading) looking for the definitive "origin" story. Fortunately, the last 5 issues got better. I can see how they'll be able to drag this series out. Everyone is curious about Logan's past, and this series gives you a few crumbs. At the same time, they (Way) seem to be filling holes by randoming grabbing things from the air! I like the look into Logan's "bad" history, but the Romulus and Daken characters seem to be half-assed.

    Immortal_Fish is right

    by reflecto

Singer made the series incredibly drab and lifeless and everything since has followed that pattern. That's why we have fuckin' non-deformed Ryan Reynolds in a red shirt signifying Deadpool, Liev with fangs and a coat as Sabretooth, and some random too-young bitch in a gym top as Emma Frost. Nobody wants to spend the money or go the distance with a vision for X-Men. They just do it on the cheap, ashamed to make a superhero movie. Pathetic.

    Fanboys are too funny

    by half vader

...because they spout all the canon shit when if they paused for breath they'd realise that the way to bring the 90% NON comic-nerd audience "up to speed" and make more daring comic-based films (especially for the enormous female demographic) is to wean them gently from reality to full-blown men-wearing-pantyhose craziness. Besides, doesn't this take place before the X-men stuff? Anyway, Being (at least an objective) comic-nerd myself even I know that while bright yellow tights are there for a(n outdated) reason in a comic, it. Doesn't. Fucking. Work. On. Film. That joke in the first movie works on both levels. <p> Spiderman is one thing, but Wolverine is a completely bloody different tone. You think he'd look mean and tough and not like a day-glo target in the yellow clownsuit? Whatever. Do the yellow costume and you've got Batman and Robin camp-orama. Or "Frank Miller's The Spirit" by all reports. Sure the B.O. for Dark Knight was bizarre and great, but notice it did that by taking every stylised bit OUT, save the visual metaphor/caricature of the two lead characters. Who weren't even super-powered! It was a cop/detective movie. <p> With all that in mind, I did see a picture of the brown outfit as an action figure for this film... baby steps.

Some of you dickheads can't blame Ranter This Time!

    by Darth_Kaos

I enjoy XMen 3 and thought it was a excellent continuation of series. I still don't understand why some of you fanboys hate it so much, expect for the fact that the people here at AICN hate Ranter, therefore you have to hate Ratner.<br><br> On many of occasions, I've ask for someone to give me a logical reason for the Ratner Hate. But all I ever get is that he is a Hack, Douche, etc. No intelligent response, just childish name calling. This goes for some of the people who run this site as well.<br><br> anyway, I see alot here are already dogging this movie, yet they don't mention the director. Dickheads!

    X-Men 3

    by shaft478

I didn't like X-Men 3 for multiple reasons. Shitty Juggernaut, retarded use of Sentinels, turning Wolverine into a complete pussy, having Jean Grey turn into the most powerful being on the planet and then have her follow orders from Magneto, waiting until the end of the movie to have Iceman turn into Iceman...... I'm sure I can find more if I go back and watch it.

there really needs to be an X3 FAQ

    by oisin5199

to help out the people who need it explained every single talkback why X3 was a shitstain on the franchise. It's not just the fact that Ratner was a bad director. It was a clusterfuck from the beginning. From the production to casting to script problems - however, a director with some vision who wasn't a studio yes-man to the Fox Fascists (Rothman!!)could have made it somehow work. But as it was, it was completely soulless, nonsensical, throw everything in the blender directing and did a disservice to almost every single recurring character. The new ones, Beast, Angel, and Kitty Pryde (newish), all had good moments, but that was it. Hopefully, this Wolverine movie will get things back on track.
