Learn Who Plays The Lead In SciFi’s STARGATE: UNIVERSE!!

Published at:  Dec 15, 2008 1:05:23 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Robert Carlyle (“Trainspotting,” “The Full Monty”), last seen helping Jack Bauer herd African children to safety, will star as Dr. David Rush in “Stargate: Universe,” SciFi’s looming spinoff.

The other regulars are expected to be played by less famous actors.

The Hollywood Reporter describes the premise:

Described as edgier, darker and younger-skewing than its predecessors, "SGU" follows a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians left to fend for themselves when forced through a Stargate after their hidden base comes under attack. The survivors, who emerge aboard an ancient ship missing in the far reaches of space, are led by Dr. David Rush (Carlyle), who works to unlock the ship's mysteries and return the group home but also might have ulterior motives.

Funny how many aging movie actors are taking TV paychecks these days. Although saying that, Carlyle has done lots of British TV (it doesn't hold quite the same stigma as being a "tv actor" does in the US).

    Younger-skewing?

    by phloton

Who does Sci-Fi channel skew towards now? And if that's the case, why pick a lead actor who is older then the regular cast members of it's current shows?
I love network rationale for wanting the "younger audience," because they think young people are the only ones who "consume," what they advertise. How many 18 - 24 years olds are buying the "Male Enhancement" drugs and Viagra.
I guess I'm just an old guy sick of the 18 - 24 demographic that networks want. It's used as an excuse to perpetrate bad writing and worse acting. Ya know, I enjoyed good writing and acting at the age of 12 as much as I do at 38. But I also know people my age and older who like awful drek. Age has nothing to do with good taste. And to the advertisers - people of all ages need to buy detergent (except the 18 - 24 year olds who get mom to do their laundry).

    That's just insanely bad casting.

Stargate is fun, but it's ... candy floss fun. Light, airy, non-filling. Robert Carlyle is ... not.

The only way this can work, is if he pulls a Christopher Ecclestone, and has his character killed pretty quickly in the show. Use his star power to help the show, up his US profile and leverage it into better movies.

    Worst stargate versus best Voyager?

    by v'shael

I don't think it's that clear cut. Voyager (under Manny Coto) did some pretty decent episodes in year 4, when they managed to fix most of the crap introduced by the demon spawned Bragamaniacs in seasons 1-3.

The worst stargates were pretty fucking bad though. From early day disasters like Emancipation or Broca Divide, to the more recent poor showings like Nightwalkers or Family Ties, or Bounty. I'd rate some of Manny Coto's voyager work against those stinkers any day of the week.

It's okay that they maybe co-write the pilot, but they need to get some new 'fresh' writers... Because the plot lines have been eerily too much of the same. how many times can some team member get infected? On top of that, they need more enemies or something besides the wraith. Oh I suppose they'll pop in the Universe, but we need some inventiveness.

    by yotzvonfrelnik

And why do producers have this interminable need to "appeal to younger viewers"? Let's repeat it again: YOU DON'T NEED TO APPEAL TO YOUNGER VIEWERS. Just write a good story that anyone can watch and the young people will latch onto it on their own. Amazing how they keep missing that point.

    Younger skewing? WTF?

    by allykatd

I stopped watching SG:A because I felt like I was watching something written by a bunch of 14 year old retarded geeks while riding the short bus to school. How can they possibly make this younger-skewing?

Carlyle!!!!!!!!!!! That casting is too good.

    by kabong

It'll never happen or it won't last long.

He'll be in it for the pilot ep as an explorer who goes missing or throws the torch to a younger explorer . . . or some such tripe trope.

    I thought Carlyle had dignity

    by mattmanreturns

I guess money always wins out. Stargate is like a poor man's Star Trek... which is sad considering the current state of Trek.

    Robert Patrick

Checked out in the opening of Atlantis. Unfortunately, that was obvious from the fact that he wasn't listed as a regular in the opening credits and yet his character was meant to be head of the military team.

Maybe, just maybe he is going to make a surprise early exit. He's still getting a lot of high profile movie work so I can't see him doing a show like this for a really long time.

    Ravenous in Space.

    by engelhast

Carlyle was awesome in that movie. A series where he cannibalizes the crew of his space ship and anything else that comes out of that big round microwave they call a Stargate would be wicked awesome.

It's said the Stargate Worlds MMO will tie into the television series in some ways. So obviously this new format is cause it's more video game friendly, like no air force bullshit. Also the MMO is going to suck balls compared to EVE Online.
