Learn Who Plays The Lead In SciFi’s STARGATE: UNIVERSE!!
I am – Hercules!!
Robert Carlyle (“Trainspotting,” “The Full Monty”), last seen helping Jack Bauer herd African children to safety, will star as Dr. David Rush in “Stargate: Universe,” SciFi’s looming spinoff.
The other regulars are expected to be played by less famous actors.
The Hollywood Reporter describes the premise:
Described as edgier, darker and younger-skewing than its predecessors, "SGU" follows a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians left to fend for themselves when forced through a Stargate after their hidden base comes under attack. The survivors, who emerge aboard an ancient ship missing in the far reaches of space, are led by Dr. David Rush (Carlyle), who works to unlock the ship's mysteries and return the group home but also might have ulterior motives.

This will be fantastic..
Sigh.

...but he'll do for 5 years till it's cancelled and replaced with the next stargate show.
-
So does this effectively shoot down the "Carlyle as Dr. Who" rumors?
-
An actual good peice of casting news for what otherwise sounds like a POS show. Or maybe Bobby Carlyle has lost his marbles
-
You stole my line! Now my post is pointless! :))))
-
Did he piss some studio heads off or something? He is stuck in cable tv now? The guy played Begbie and Hitler ffs.
-
I am a Stargate fan, but really Carlyle is out of their league
He has been knighted for Christ sake (well OBE). He is a real actor.
Seriously, what is his ulterior motive? Who did he piss off? -
Funny how many aging movie actors are taking TV paychecks these days. Although saying that, Carlyle has done lots of British TV (it doesn't hold quite the same stigma as being a "tv actor" does in the US).
-
good solid casting, I hope they try some new things with this incarnation.
-
Might be kinda good.
-
Color me excited.
-
Who does Sci-Fi channel skew towards now? And if that's the case, why pick a lead actor who is older then the regular cast members of it's current shows?
I love network rationale for wanting the "younger audience," because they think young people are the only ones who "consume," what they advertise. How many 18 - 24 years olds are buying the "Male Enhancement" drugs and Viagra.
I guess I'm just an old guy sick of the 18 - 24 demographic that networks want. It's used as an excuse to perpetrate bad writing and worse acting. Ya know, I enjoyed good writing and acting at the age of 12 as much as I do at 38. But I also know people my age and older who like awful drek. Age has nothing to do with good taste. And to the advertisers - people of all ages need to buy detergent (except the 18 - 24 year olds who get mom to do their laundry). -
Nobody can say "Seen it coming".
-
RC has publically said he is NOT the next Doctor.
I know he could have been lying, but he's not the best choice for the role... -
That's just insanely bad casting.
Stargate is fun, but it's ... candy floss fun. Light, airy, non-filling. Robert Carlyle is ... not.
The only way this can work, is if he pulls a Christopher Ecclestone, and has his character killed pretty quickly in the show. Use his star power to help the show, up his US profile and leverage it into better movies. -
As to whether he's too much actor for a show like this....it's another gig, he can tone it down if necessary. Think Full Monty.
-
This sucks.
-
second rate, low budget, sci-fi show. Perhaps as V'Shael says he might just do a few episodes. I have nothing against the show, but this just seems odd.
-
perhaps this show will be canceled in time for him to make the jump to WHO.
-
How the hell?! Carlyle must be free or something cos I didn't see that one coming.

Damn!! and i was expecting Captain Zack Brannigan to get it!
by wowsah156
Kif!! The Orci have a new weapon!! Get my plutonic industrial massager and rub me down!!!
-
As Aloy pointed out, don't forget Carlysle did The Full Monty, as silly and fun and frothy a movie as you could hope for.
-
I thought it had been announced that David Morrissey was going to play him? So why was everyone still hoping for it to be someone else?
-
it has not been announced. its speculation that david morrissey is because of the upcoming christmas special
-
The show aims to be edgier and darker than its predecessors. Carlyle is inspired casting. So stfu V'Shael, you ignorant sock puppet. What is it with you and shark jumping anyway, do you work in an aquarium where you get blown by basking sharks?
-
Zapp Brannigan would kick that guy's ass.
-
Do you even know what the term means? I only ever post under this name, you twat.
-
I'm impressed.
Well, until I learn he won't use his own accent.....
Just pray he brings more talent to this than in James Bond. -
He's not made of stone, throw enough money around and you can anyone to come onto a show. I'm surprised by this announcement, I guess he needed the work. Glad he's getting some work.
-
Quick, name all the new, decent budget, high-profile sci-fi shows being created nowadays? Yeah, I thought so. This has much potential and will give it the benefit of the doubt. And I'm greatful there's a new Stargate show. At it's worst Stargate was better than Voyager at it's best.

Dammit, I guess that Paterson Joseph 11th Doctor rumor is true
by spyguy
Although, Carlyle was kinda lame in THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH, so maybe this is a good thing.
-
I don't think it's that clear cut. Voyager (under Manny Coto) did some pretty decent episodes in year 4, when they managed to fix most of the crap introduced by the demon spawned Bragamaniacs in seasons 1-3.
The worst stargates were pretty fucking bad though. From early day disasters like Emancipation or Broca Divide, to the more recent poor showings like Nightwalkers or Family Ties, or Bounty. I'd rate some of Manny Coto's voyager work against those stinkers any day of the week. -
Terrible. And people thought I was crazy for suggesting Colin Salmon for the role a couple of years back.
-
AND WHY WAS FARSCAPE CANCELED FOR IT?
-
I have always been hoping that Teal'c's son Riyak would show up sometime. He would be a great addition. I liked his character and it would be a nice tie in to SG1.
-
Throw in Heroes character development, alignment shifting, and yew gotsa hit!
-
It's okay that they maybe co-write the pilot, but they need to get some new 'fresh' writers... Because the plot lines have been eerily too much of the same. how many times can some team member get infected? On top of that, they need more enemies or something besides the wraith. Oh I suppose they'll pop in the Universe, but we need some inventiveness.
-
I dont quite get how it can be darker and edgier and yet still appeal to a younger audience. Atlantis is aimed at 12 or 13 year olds surely?
-
Dec 15, 2008 11:12:46 AM CST
Why the hell's every spinoff have to be "Edgier" and "Darker"?
by yotzvonfrelnik
And why do producers have this interminable need to "appeal to younger viewers"? Let's repeat it again: YOU DON'T NEED TO APPEAL TO YOUNGER VIEWERS. Just write a good story that anyone can watch and the young people will latch onto it on their own. Amazing how they keep missing that point.

I forgot that Stargate was still on...I thought it was all rerun
by leafar the lost
This is some of thr worst sci-fi shit ever. They must have kept it on because it was cheap, Canadian television, and they had time to fill on Friday nights.
-
Getting sick of this shit.
The brainy one, the jokey one.. sexy one... the all rounder... shit think of something new. Hopefully SGU breaks the mould. -
Dec 15, 2008 11:53:19 AM CST
Well... never been a Stargate guy, but maybe I'll watch this.
by beastie
I'm a huge Carlyle fan.Never actually hated Stargate, just couldn't get really into it.
-
From the makers of Thindependence Day! We will give it a mohawk and wheelchair if you need help.
-
Talk about milking a concept for everything it's got. It was a crappy movie and the tv shows have only been worse.
-
Younger skewing, edgier, darker...
Just like JJs coming abortion this too will be full of fail. And is there anyone who is sick and tired of the whole "Dark and edgy" bullshit? I've yet to see anything "Dark or Edgy" on TV...it has become programmer speak for dim lighting, moody music, and trite overly verbose writing. -
It'll help your point if you know the difference between Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise, which is the one Manny Coto worked on as showrunner. Otherwise you just come across as a bit of a tool. Just sayin'.
-
Moronic, cookie-cutter SF for the drooling masses. Science fiction as franchise money-maker devoid of intellect or innovation. Writers without a single risk-taking idea to enliven their predictable and yawn-inducing plotlines. We lost Farscape and Firefly to shit like this? Unforgivable. Indefensible. Irredeemable.
Did I mention I fucking hate Stargate? -
I never understood why on every episode of Stargate they always went to planets which looked like a parking lot in Vancouver.
-
Stargate > battlesta galagtica and star trek combined
-
When they canceled Farscape didn't the Sci Fi Channel say something to the effect that they were getting away from space themed shows?
-
He wants to raise the temperature in the ship so everyone takes off there shirts.
-
fuck you haters, Robert Robert Carlyle is what RDA (Macgyver) was to SG-1. wow i cant wait for this.
-
...why not a military guy, seems weird right? this Dr. Rush seems to be something strange nothing like we ever seen on stargate. and what about Colonol Evertte Young?
-
Anyone who has seen his work on British TV knows that.
-
I got nothing. Stargate sucks.
-
no soup for you, NEXT! seriously guys this is great news. i mean this is definitly better news than finding out that Vega is a gay character in stargate Atlantis last week.
-
this is the rank of sci fi shows:
1.Star wars (upcoming TV series)
2. stargate
3. Firefly
4. Farscape
5. Star trek
6. Fringe
7. battlestar galagtica
8. Shadows of Anglazen
-
...i would like to know who. im thinking SG-1 people since this is happening in SGC at the start before they get lost. what annoys me is the lost part, it so cliche.
-
I already beat you to it. ;)
-
no i dont its disgusting
-
the producers said they are planning on making gay characters in stargate universe, they are trying to be edgy so im guessing thats what this show needs, gay characters in uniform...
-
stop hating on gays you idiot, its people like you that make me lose faith in humanity. so what there are gay in the military you know asshole!
-
@dioxholster,
im not against gay people just said that its absurd for show like this to cater to homosexuality or presenting social issues since its supposed to be sci fi military stuff. -
Dec 15, 2008 2:48:19 PM CST
dioxholster, its character-based now not exploration girly stuff
by dioxholster
SGU is like LOST so the characters are the ones with the stories. its gonna be realistic Dark Knight style with Quantum of Solace action and the sexiness of battlestar galagtic. dont talk about something u dont understand fool.
-
@dioxholster, wakeup dumbass thats not what stargate is supposed to be, all u said is a turn off and will equal shit when it airs. and i fucking hate LOST! its bloody boring with the flashbacks and flash forwards and flash sidways and flash in&out...its all stupid. Fringe kicks its ass big time.
-
Probably in a two part special? And then like in an old Gilligan's Island episode, RDA goes home while the castaways stay lost.
And a friendly warning to producers, the crossovers better have major Stargate actors! Don't try to pass off Robert Picardo as a "special episode'. -
u sound like a 8 year old, grow up. and FRINGE is nothing but a rehash of every mystery sci fi thing that ever existed what a total waste. pple like u should stop bending over for jj abrams, hes not a god hes just a douche who gets lucky sometimes.
-
atlantis has its head barely above water after Weir left so Picardo is definitly a good thing, he gave a new quality to the show. i blame the people who decided to end the show so early.
-

dioxholster, how about First Contact? The Seed? Daedalus Variati
by dioxholster
season 5 was great they only thing that mightve sucked is Brainstorm which didnt even feel like a stargate episode, it was just stupid liberal propaganda about global warming and that cheesy romantic scenes were crap. but i cant wait for Vegas.
-
since they are lost so the only crossover is at the very beginning before they get lost. some said they mght use that ancient device that vala and denial used in season10 or 9 to go to the ori galaxy. so maybe. but then they wont be THAT lost, i think.
-
seriously u r annoying me...
-
you have a whole big talkback about Twilight but you never give stargate a chance.
-
i mean he's a fantastic actor, but Stargate? seriously? they must have paid him a shedload. Hopefully they'll get some decent writers on board. or end up like star trek did wth B&B i.e rehashing of rehashed epsiodes
-
I just saw him on "24 Redemption" and, I thought he was great in it. When they said they were get a "major" actor, they meant it. But, two things, 1) I thought the "major" actor was for the Evertte Young role and 2)the plot-line for SGU here is different from the producers gave out earlier. Maybe, things change for the better.
-
This is stunt casting...and all about international television syndication (and now DVD sales and rentals), the same reason for Paramount casting Patrick Stewart in Star Trek. It's all about worldwide marketing and promotions...having little to nothing to do wth finding the right actor for the right role!!!
-

With Carlyle I'll give this show the benefit of the doubt.
by amy chasing
It's a great idea, but even with a good actor anything can suck if the story is bland (which the Stargate universe has been for the past couple years).
-
...this parody scene from the 200th episode.http://tinyurl.com/5tvw7n
-
Yep!
-
I stopped watching SG:A because I felt like I was watching something written by a bunch of 14 year old retarded geeks while riding the short bus to school. How can they possibly make this younger-skewing?
-
It'll never happen or it won't last long.
He'll be in it for the pilot ep as an explorer who goes missing or throws the torch to a younger explorer . . . or some such tripe trope. -
I guess money always wins out. Stargate is like a poor man's Star Trek... which is sad considering the current state of Trek.
-
does anyone know about EVE game, same story basically check it out. btw Carlyle might be a big fan of the show. no one considered that.
-
Checked out in the opening of Atlantis. Unfortunately, that was obvious from the fact that he wasn't listed as a regular in the opening credits and yet his character was meant to be head of the military team.
Maybe, just maybe he is going to make a surprise early exit. He's still getting a lot of high profile movie work so I can't see him doing a show like this for a really long time. -
Nay ahm no sayin that ye can't travel te aither wairlds an tha, bit thre a greet big caircle, like? Yah wee doss cunt.
*Glasses someone* -
Begbie, i mean,David Rush: "Right bastirts, we're a long way fae haime, anybody bring the cairds? firfuxache! it's fuckin shite withoot the cairds!
-
Carlyle was awesome in that movie. A series where he cannibalizes the crew of his space ship and anything else that comes out of that big round microwave they call a Stargate would be wicked awesome.
-
It's said the Stargate Worlds MMO will tie into the television series in some ways. So obviously this new format is cause it's more video game friendly, like no air force bullshit. Also the MMO is going to suck balls compared to EVE Online.
