BNAT X - The Fake Line-Up

Published at:  Dec 15, 2008 3:24:38 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Every year - as a sort of tradition - I've playfully put up a list of films that would be an ALTERNATE BNAT that you folks at home could play along with. It has become a guessing game, and something kinda evil on my part to torment and torture the guessers with. This year - is a kinda crazy year for so many reasons, the least of which is... well... it's the 10th Anniversary - so I'm supposed to exceed expectations - and I'm not entirely sure I've done that, but I do know I am so fucking pleased with the line-up, that I won't know what to do with myself.

Here we go...

1. THE CHAMP (1931)

2. SOMEWHERE IN TIME (1980)

3. ALICE IN WONDERLAND (2010)

4. ISHTAR (1987)

5. THE STING (1973)

6. KURENAI NO BUTA (1992)

7. FLASH GORDON (1980)

8. GOJIRA TAI MEKAGOJIRA (1974)

9. DIAL M FOR MURDER (1954)

10. THE THIRD MAN (1949)

11. BIRTH OF A NATION (1915)

12. FIRESTARTER (1984)

13. THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE (1961)

14. GREEN HORNET (2010)

15. WHO IS KILLING THE GREAT CHEFS OF EUROPE? (1978)

16. EL CID (1961)

17. A BOY AND HIS DOG (1975)

Now - remember the above titles are ONLY a type of clue to the film or film segment that is playing. This year there are 17 separate things that make up the whole. Lots of guests - and a good deal of sneak peeks. Till sometime on the otherside of BNAT - this is Harry wishing all of you the best of times. Take care and enjoy as many movies as you can - as this is BUTT-NUMB-A-THON weekend and even if you didn't get in or try. Call some friends and enjoy this wacky love we all share of cinema...

    Two things about this list

    by zacdilone

    1) Harry has forgotten the original purpose of this list (again). It was supposed to be a list of films we could watch at home as our own alternate BNAT. Kinda hard to do that with films that haven't been released yet, big guy. And 2) Everyone tries to guess which upcoming film will match the films on this list. Remember--Harry likes to throw obscure and old films in there as well. It's kinda fun to try to guess those as well. I'll start. "Flash Gordon" is "Flesh Gordon."

The thing is...300 was more of an unknown entity to the studio. WB needed to have a good screening at BNAT to make an impact and start more serious talk of the film. Where as, Watchmen is a very protected property by WB. Look at the security behind the SINGLE screening they have had of it so far. Agreed, there are similarities, Snyder, WB, release date. But the HUGE difference. If 300 was not well received it would not have been that big of a deal $$$ wise. Were as Watchmen is really a HUGE shot in the dark for them. IF and only IF they are 100% confident with the product and the feedback they would release for BNAT. Don't get me wrong I would not be surprised if they brought the opening scene or extremely extended trailer. Say 15 min. But the whole cut, it better be brilliant.

    by dannyocean01

Still a geek property and so BNAT seems like the perfect home for it. It's not like they've proven to be a merciless crowd? The recent footage on iTunes shows much more finished effects work and Snyder has already confirmed they've got completed cuts. Surely WB would rather show it there then infront of a load of critics waiting to demolish it.

They're showing Monsters vs Aliens, that's for sure. Everyone getting in had bags from that movie. Also, you're all picking too many new movies. The first new movie isn't coming on until 12 or 1. In fact, some of the standby people are going to have to leave for that movie, b/c their seats are for the talent. All eight of them. Now when they said that, everyone was saying Watchmen. But I gotta go with Star Trek on this one. Other than that, probably old movies, a few snippets of new stuff, and a few new trailers.

    What Started BNAT X

    by gf2020

If I had to guess, I think BNAT started with an ingenious Teen Wolf fake-out and then Selznick's astonishingly homoerotic Viva Villa (1934) before moving on to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Of course, my guess is based on Robogeek's play by play that I found with a little bit of effort: http://twitter.com/Robogeek

I don't see any jaw-droppers, unless the finale is great. Lot of previews and extended trailers, but at least they're of great films. Seem to be kind of lumped together. What's the trashy exploitation film? Usually there's something like TEEN LUST or ONCE UPON A GIRL. Still, a decent lineup but I'm amazed that THE SPIRIT was not shown!!

BNATs of the past have culminated with stuff like Schumacher's The Phantom of the Opera and Dreamgirls. This looks to have been a severely good year, considering debacles of the past which shall remain unnamed until I say Addzio Tom and downtown Austin... anyone? P.S. I have to say it one more time, ending FF 08 with City of Ember was a fucking slap in the face, I don't care how expensive the cave party was.

I wish I had applied this year! In the past, there's been like 3 or 4 new, advance films, and then a lot of old weird shit. So what happens the one year I don't apply? Valkyrie, Che, I Love You Man, Benjamin Button... of course the really good fims turned out to be nothing but clips and previews (boooooo!!), but still, a HUGE improvement over previous years' lists.

    by the reluctant austinite

Paint's list is pretty good. I'm not sure anyone mentioned that the version of "Metropolis" that played was the rare 80s version with the crazy pop-synth score. Ending with the five hour something version of "Che" sucked the life out almost everybody, and we couldn't take anymore. Neither could Harry and Yoko, who also retreated to the lobby to chat with friends. I don't think there was a single AICN member left awake and in the theater as Che chugged into its fourth hour.

It's not all about the movies

    by garbageman33

To be perfectly honest, the movies weren't everything I had hoped for. Benjamin Button was a bit sappy and 30 minutes too long (how many times does he need to keep showing up?). I never bought into Valkyrie (Tom Cruise seemed like he was in a different movie than all the other actors). And I'd have liked to have seen more of Watchmen, some of Star Trek, The Road, maybe even The Wrestler. That said, I loved Coraline, Up made me cry crocodile tears, Sahara was cool as balls, Metropolis was vastly improved by the addition of an 80s synth pop soundtrack and I Love You, Man was huge fun. But the thing I'll remember most about my first Butt-Numb-A-Thon is the kindness of all the people I met. In fact, I think my favorite part of the day was hanging out in the lobby with various people on the run from Che Guevara.

If you've made a great movie, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Anybody that would judge your take on TERMINATOR based on your CHARLIE'S ANGELS flicks is an idiot. It's very obvious that you really do understand how this would be a dream job for any imaginative director that grew up with Cameron's films, and I hope to God you pull off making a fresh, kick-ass TERMINATOR movie. Short blurbs

    by bob loblaw law blog

BENJAMIN BUTTON - Wonderful film. Capone said it would leave us crying... and dammit, he was right.

VALKYRIE - Better than I expected, though I don't know how embellished the story is from fact. I dig seeing Tom Wilkinson in anything.

I LOVE YOU, MAN - I had this on my short list of future films for my BNAT app, but ended up taking it off at the end. A pleasant surprise! A lot of laughs for this one. Great cast, including Paul Rudd, Jason Segel Rashida Jones, Jamie Pressly, Jane Curtin, The Daily Show's Larry Wilmore, Lou Ferrigno, Jon Favreau, Andy Samberg, Rob Huebel... and a bunch of others.

CHE - There's a lot of interesting stuff in this film. Unfortunately, Sodenbergh has hid it in hours and hours of slow, uneven narrative. At over 4 hours, it starts to feel really bloated and meandering many times. It's not bad... it's just unfocused, unlike THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES, which only focused on Guevarra's early life. I made it through most of CHE even though I was tired, but I'll probably rent it on Blu-Ray later so I can get a better feel for some of it. Del Toro IS Che Guevarra... I wouldn't doubt that he'll get a Best Actor nomination at the Oscars for this one.

UP - Easily one of the brightest stars of BNAT X. The Pixar folk have knocked it out of the park on this one (again), and we only saw the first 45 mins of the film. It's touching, gorgeous, emotional, funny as hell ("SQUIRREL!") with talking dogs, giant birds and an oh-so-lovable old man as the protagonist. I can't wait to see this one in full.

Monsters vs. Aliens - This was pretty cool from the 20 mins or so that we saw, and the 3D effects were good. Dreamworks is nowhere close to PIXAR when it comes to storytelling and this didn't get the response that UP did before. But I expect this on to do quite well. Plus, Stephen Colbert plays the President of the USA. You can't beat that!

My Bloody Valentine 3D - I haven't seen the original, but this was a pretty cool horror flick. Plenty of gore, blood, suspense in this one... and a quite lengthy sex scene that ends (of course) tragically. Let's just say that you never see the actress in that scene WITH clothes... and she's on screen from head to toe for several minutes. My wife was with me, and I was afraid she was going to cover my eyes! LOST fans will love seeing Kevin Tighe, and Tom Atkins rocks the screen as a retired cop out for answers. The 3D effects are plentiful and are pretty awesome using the RealD 3D technology.

Goodie bags consisted of shoulder bags from Dreamworks with the "Monsters vs. Aliens" logo, a ton of graphic novels (i.e. I Am Legend, Doomed, 30 Days of Night, PUSH, etc.), some DVDS, including the 2-disc unrated version of Tropic Thunder, the TRICK 'R TREAT book about the making of the still-unreleased Michael Dougherty film screened at BNAT last year, some anime posters, CDs, Harry Potter figurines... etc, etc.

Harry calling you out like that, saying his wife wanted to meet you. Sounds to me like you're a made man. Maybe you won't be in the back row next year. Although I honestly didn't mind. Sure beats the front row.

    A few more blurbs...

    by bob loblaw law blog

TERMINATOR: SALVATION - Cool to have McG explain his talking with James Cameron about making the movie. The clips were pretty bad ass, even if I'm not exactly sure what was going on in all of them (many were unfinished, but there was LOTS to see). McG told Harry he had the whole film on a DVD screener with him, but that Warner Bros. wouldn't let him screen it (apparently, someone from Warner Bros. was there, and he called her out as a "fucker," if I remember correctly, for not letting him show more. I *think* he was kidding...). He also said Christian Bale is very active in the editing of the film. I'm optimistic about it.

WATCHMEN - So cool to have Jackie Earl Haley at the Alamo with us to introduce the first 20 mins or so. He said that Snyder had the comic book in his hand more than the script while making the film. The scenes we saw were pretty awesome... the opening credits give us glimpses of the passing years to the sound of Bob Dylan's "The Times They are A-Changin" and the opening sequences in The Comedian's apartment are just incredible. I wish we could have seen more of this!

Well, I was in the front row last year... so I was pleasantly surprised. I don't take my seat placement personally... I know Harry's just got to figure out where to put all our sizable asses. Plus, I was right in the center of the row last year, so no complaints! :)

    Thanks, Bob & Cheri!

That totally satisfied my vicarious BNAT lust! Hmm..that lineup definitely has more bite than most other years. And I'm not just talking about White Dog! You guys are some lucky sonsovbitches!

Now I'm just hoping Che only seemed so bloated because you were all tweaked off your heads on caffeine.

    Button

I've seen Ben Button twice now and it was much, much better the second time. What appears a bit cold and distant on first viewing is pretty deep upon a second reflection.

  • The opening is competely different, for one. Rather than staring with the detectives talking, you see the attack on The Comedian. However, DAMN. It was great. I'm even more excited about March now!

BENJAMIN BUTTON and VALKYRIE were both pretty good, about what I expected them to be. MY BLOODY VALENTINE was pure 3D fun from beginning to end.
CHE was...well...eh. I was one of the few folks that both stayed for the whole thing and stayed AWAKE for the whole thing, but the whole time I was just waiting for something interesting to happen. When every firefight looks like every other firefight, and every conversation fells like every other one, and you show the same things time after time...eh. I think you have a really solid 2-3 hour movie in there, but it's wrapped in a four and a half hour miniseries. Cargill was talking about Capone's interview with Soderbergh about it, I'm going to have to read that and see what he was going for.

    movies that sucked

    by bobsullivan

My quick impressions on BNAT movies that sucked:
    1. The Curious tale of Benjamin Button - Imagine Forest Gump, but instead of having a character with mild retardation you have a character with some aging issues, and instead of doing all sorts of interesting things, he instead does nothing and you've got this movie. Billed as great "character development", but that is just pretentious code for no plot. I know a lot of people loved it, but I am definitely not one of them.
    2. Monsters vs. Aliens - tough to say for sure since we only saw a clip, and the 3D was definitely superior to Coraline, but dare I say that Steven Colbert was awful? Effects were good, but poor voice acting means this one might top out at mediocre.
    3. My Bloody Valentine 3D - The killer was easy to spot in the first 5 minutes of the movie. Not very interesting.
    4. T4/Knowing/Push - Oh, and McG is an enormous tool.
    5. White Dog - Probably bad timing, but everyone slept during this movie.
    6. Che - total piece of self-indulgent garbage. 5 freaking hours.

Hell yeah. Bloom County was the greatest comic strip ever. Personally, I thought it trounced Calvin & Hobbes which seemed to be the "in thing" when it came out.Hands down, Bloom County had the greatest cast of characters - from Opus, Bill the Cat, Portnoy, Hodge Podge, Binkley, Steve Dallas and yes...L.H. Puttgrass. Great, great stuff.Cheers!

    Bloom County

    by stlost

Those were good times. Bill the Cat running for president. Deathtongue. The "NASA" mission to turn South African ambassador in Washington black.

Steve Dallas was the man! "I could pimp."

Don't forget Cutter John, and Oliver Wendell Jones.

I still have one of my most prized posesssions: A stuffed Bill the Cat doll.
