OSCAR's Next Host is Hugh Jackman!!

Published at:  Dec 13, 2008 3:27:18 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Hugh Jackman, star of May 1 release "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," will host the Feb. 22 Oscars ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed Friday.

Jackman apparently got the gig because he did such a bang-up job hosting the Tonys.

The 2009 Oscars will mark the first time in a while since the Oscars have gone without a stand-up comic host.

Recent Academy Award emcees have included Jon Stewart, Steve Martin, Ellen DeGeneres and Chris Rock.

Well, I think it's a good choice. He's already proven that he can entertain on stage and also, he'll be used to being on stage for long periods of time in front of an audience, so hopefully this will work out well.

Hopefully another network is smart enough to counter program with a big NFL game. Damn, I'd even watch a fracking Detriot Lions game than the Academy Awards dressed up as the Tonys. With the likely nominations of MILk and Jackman hosting and prancing around stage, the gayness will be off the charts---not that there's anything wrong with that. Just not my cup of tea.

Sometimes the speeches are...nauseating. "I'd like to thank Sally for being there, and Barbara and Tom and everybody in the crew. I'd like to thank my agents Blah, and Blah, and Blah..."

There are some speeches I remember forever and it had nothing to do with time limit. Robin Willaims comes to mind when he won for Good Will Hunting - when he told his father he wanted to be an actor, his dad said, "That's fine but make sure you have something to fall back on like welding." It's all in the delivery.

the reason why they were moved forward was because of the The Baftas. The British academy have put a lot of work into their base in Los angeles. As have the irish film board. But the Baftas are the reasons why the oscars were moved forward. The baftas are now announced first and really there will not be much difference in the award noms when they are both released. but very controversially last year they introduced a rule that barred american films for two years. The first casualty was Clint eastwood and his two part war movie flags of our fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima.

The speeches where they just recite names are lame, and time doesn't necessarily equal quality, but almost every broadcast feels pinched by the time they get to the big categories, supposedly the most prestigious of the night. It's almost anticlimactic as they rush through the last round, and for what? I'd rather chance a boring speech than a production number which is almost certain to be stupid.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Dec 13, 2008 8:57:25 AM CST

    It feels pinched...

    by buffywrestling

because it's three and a half hours long! It will always be anti-climatic when you start the show with best supporting actor/actress, then segue into best costume and art design. Although, I do seem to remember the last awards where they fucked up the rotation and had people accepting awards from their seats. Was that a dream I just had or was it a fucking nightmare? I've been watching the awards since I was wee,; you just don't fuck with tradition like that.

I don't mean to sound pissy about it because I like award shows. I still have the Titanic and the LotR:RotK sweep on tape and I've been taping all the MTV awards since '97.

Um, remember the fundraiser "Comedy Relief"

    by eriamjh

Homeless fundraiser of standups, hosted by -- and initiated by -- "comedians" Billy Crystal, Robin Williams and Whoopie Fucking Goldberg???? To be honest, I never liked her standup, and she was outstanding in "The Color Purple". Nothing worthwhile since.

    Come on now

    by buffywrestling

The white bread that is Hollywood just got a shmear of gossip spread on it. Besides, Marisa on the stand, talking about cars in a News York accent - while not the best - was good work. She held Pesci and Karate Kid together.

Whoopi Goldberg is not a stand-up

    by hercules

And Chevy Chase hosted subsequent to Jack Lemmon, iirc.

    Well...

    by cman

She's not a stand-up in the stictest sense, no. But she has performed comedy on stage. Hugh Jackman on the other hand, yeesh. What's he going to do, tell Wolverine jokes and metaphorically suck on Baz Luhrman's wang?

Herc, Chevy Chase was a comedian, as is Whoopi

    by yackbacker

Listen, the whole point of this article is that the AMPAS went for someone without comedy chops. Whether they're a professional stand-up by trade or just someone that acts in comedies, etc. is kind of irrelevant. The point is that not since Jack Lemmon has the Academy decided to not go with someone who makes people laugh on a regular basis. Agreed?

They did ask Steve Martin, right?

    by manatee

He is the best host... period. He's probably too busy writing, though.

Oh, and George Clooney should be the host if Martin is busy.

    I dunno Herc...

    by codymr

Not to belabor the issue, but, this looks like stand up to me:

    http://tinyurl.com/5jhzkw

And while not encyclopedic... this bio article states she "...developed her skills as a stand-up comedienne."

    http://tinyurl.com/8xjgl

Granted Goldberg, like many people in comedy, have branched out into dramatic film, live performance and theatre, sitcoms, talk shows etc, etc. Whoopi gotta eat too.

Curious to know how you define "Stand Up"? Do you mean "actively working in stand up comedy"? If that's the case, it seems she has left that part of her career behind, unlike Sienfeld or Chris Rock who still so shows from time to time. It that what you are getting at?

Jackman will be a decent host because...

    by mullah omar

...unlike the previous hosts, he won't be trying so hard to make everybody laugh. At least that is what I expect. It might be the most earnest Oscar presentation we've ever seen. It might be refreshing to see somebody actually just HOST and MANAGE rather than try to perform.

and have the whole show be like The Price Is Right, where to win their award, the nominees have to guess the retail price of some fancy lamp and play Plinko and shit. Maybe then it would be interesting to watch.

Chris Rock was in ireland for his first ever

    by emeraldboy

stand up show at the Bulmer international comedy festival. There are now so many comedy shows in Dublin and ireland. Its very hard to keep count of whose coming and going. Its a bit like music festivals. First there was feile. then there was witness. now theres oxygen and the electric picnic and there is the Marquee down in Cork. About Chris rock. The only material that failed to get a titter were his jokes about women. Which a lot of people felt were sexist or bordering on sexist. Chris rock can get annoying. I have seen his specials on TV and a lot of his material drags. He does this thing where he walks. stops. grins. like he knows he is being flimed for tv.
