And The Director Of NEW MOON (The TWILIGHT Sequel) Looks To Be...

Published at:  Dec 12, 2008 9:16:56 AM CST

Merrick here...

Earlier this week, we heard strong indications that Chris Weitz (THE GOLDEN COMPASS, ABOUT A BOY) would replace Catherine Hardwicke as director of NEW MOON - the TWILIGHT sequel that's currently ramping up production.

Entertainment Weekly says he's just about to be hired for the job.

Sources tell EW.com that Summit Entertainment is about to hire Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) as the shepherd for New Moon, the second installment of Stephenie Meyer's best-selling Twilight series

...indicates the update, which can be found HERE.

Considering the solidity of earlier rumors re: Weitz's involvement, this news is more of a confirmation than anything else.

I wasn't a fan of GOLDEN COMPASS, but there was some nice design work in the film & some respectable moments of visual wonder/awe - qualities that would only benefit NEW MOON I should think.

  • Alien 3. Jurassic Park III. X-Men: The Last Stand. When your only priority is to shit out a movie as fast as possible just to make a buck, and you charge forward without taking time for creative concerns or a proper final script... the public suffers, and so does your franchise. This is going to be a train wreck.

    NICE #@$%& DESIGN WORK?!?

    by jabbathemutt

That's what we consider quality film making these days?? Golden CompASS should have been...well...GOLDEN...and the start of a huge trilogy. Instead...it was a WHOLE lotta average. Great design. Great cast. Great effects. But an AVERAGE movie. Another property ruined. Is ALL Hollywood asleep at the switch?

If all we expect from massive properties is great DESIGN $%#@& work...the end is here. The Earth HAS stood still...

  • I LOVE the books, but that movie was awful. Awful pacing, awful script, awful acting, and flat-out awful adaptation.

I saw Twilight drunk last night. Damn, it was fun. I mean... shit, the movie is awful but it's so deliciously bad it's hard not to enjoy it.

An american werewolf in london. That's it. The amount of time and money that it takes to do a werewolf properly is not in this flims budget. Except something more like UNDERWORLD in that dept.

My wife has it - I liked the Twilight movie, so I started to read New Moon - It's pretty good, actually. I'm embarrassed to be seen with it at work, so I downloaded a copy from wattpad and printed it out. Now it just looks like I'm doing work or something

    The Golden Compass Was HORRID

    by magic rat

absolutely awful, except for the Polar Bear fight. Maybe the warewolves will be CGI and have a good fight, but they don't really fight in this book.

    American Werewolf in London...

    by kid z

...yeah, that was the closest thing to werewolves being done right. The original Wolfman movie too, pretty good for the 1930's, if somewhat silly when viewed today. Other than that... nothing. I kind of like the way werewolves were handled in one of the Dresden Files books as well, but H/wood, if it addapted that, would just F it up, as usual.

Then the furries are going to absolutely eat up New Moon.

Has anyone contemplated using these movies as a form of population reduction? Just gas the theater after the movie starts and do the world a favor.

    Answering werewolf questions....

    by potch

The Twilight "werewolves" aren't werewolves in the traditional sense. They are men who turn into actual wolves. They're supposed to be ginormous though. You find out in the fourth book that they are actually shape shifters, not true werewolves. :-) Hopefully the movie has them looking like wolves and not some stupid wolfman thing.

    Chris Weitz ?????

    by series7

Whos fucking dick did he suck to be allowed to direct these special effects heavy movies? Granted Twilight 2: Die Harder will only have to trump the special effects of the Covenant (the prequel to Twilight) to fucking impress their fans. So Chuck and Buck and Suck and Fuck should be able to handle it.

    But in all seriousness

    by series7

Golden Compass was one of the worst movies ever made. Had the credits rolled the second after the bear fight, could have made it one of the best. But after that scene there really is no reason to keep watching, just don't fast forward through the commercials and wait for Coke's (Oscar snubbed) commercials to air.

Chris Weitz is a good choice, he has experience w/ special effects, and "About a Boy" had heart.

    Dog Soldiers?

    by shan

For what must have been a relatively small budget, they did pretty good werewolves, I thought. Not relevant for this series I guess but I also liked how all the firepower the soldiers were carrying was next to useless.

    Anyone else has an opinion?

    by d o o d

was the biggest missed opportunity ever. The books are amazing and because of Mr Weitz's shoddy film making skills, we'll probably never see the other two books made into movies. I haven't seen Twiglit but it looks like another smallville teen bullshit nonesense, so weitz can't really go too far wrong eh!

    Summit is RETARDED

    by posthumos1

The reason that Twilight has done as well as it has in Box Office, in my opinion, is because it was a huge book written AND directed by women. This movie in NO WAY was made for male consumption. I looks and feels like it was directed by a woman. A male director would not have made the same movie. And it would have been a mediocre film at best, probably. So the FUCKTARDS at Summit can the female and bring on the testosterone to ruin the franchise. I hate suits. Suits don't watch movies. They seem so out of touch. They want to rush this project into production thinking that the money tree will fly open and it'll just be a success. I know that some catty fans of the book have their gripes, and that's all well and good, but they will f*ck*ing melt down if this guy kills the story. Summit, IF THEY HAD A BRAIN IN THEIR COMPANY, would put a female director behind the camera for the remainder of the series.

Male or female director, Twilight is a POS.

    by annoyyou

The source material is absolutely horrible and no screenwriter, director or actor is going to change that (it's highly amusing that both Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have made fun of it in public). And the books get worse as the series progresses, culminating with a birth in which the baby eats his way out of his mother's womb and breaks her spine in the process. Lovely! Great stuff for tweens! I have to say though, I really object to this series (both books and films) because as a hard-core Mormon, Stephanie Meyer probably sank millions into the Yes on 8 campaign here in California. As such I will never support anything she creates.
