DAMMIT!!!! Bettie Page Died on my Birthday!!!

Published at:  Dec 12, 2008 1:47:21 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... I'm drunk. I've spent a great day with friends from around the world - drinking heavily and sort of forgetting about all the troubles of the world and the pressures of a tenth BUTT-NUMB-A-THON and I come home - head for the bathroom and my wife says, "AWWW FUCK!" - I say, "What sweetie?" -- -- "BETTIE PAGE DIED"

Wow. On my birthday, this day that I celebrated so awesomely with so many, one of my icons has fallen. I've known BETTIE PAGE as an icon of cult beauty for as long as I can remember. My parents and their friends often spoke of her... and then when OLIVIA and DAVE STEVENS (god rest his soul) put her into the mainstream of cult iconography... Then Joe Johnston and the impossibly lovely Jennifer brought her imagery to life in THE ROCKETEER - and then BETTIE PAGE herself was found to be alive. For years she was rumored to have died, but in reality - she was just living in anonymity, not rich, not getting rich off of her imagery, but then... then she was reborn into a mainstream of cult beauty.

There's no mainstream movies with BETTIE PAGE. But I do have posters of her, most notably TEASERAMA which came out in her heyday - Then in the mid to late nineties the Rock Poster industry played with the iconography of Bettie Page. I remember talking at length about her with Frank Kozik when he lived here in town about the perfection of her look... the glee and innocence to her debauchery. The sweetness of her sadomasochism.

BETTIE PAGE will never die as an icon. Her image has been burnt into the consciousness of the mainstream... be it the hosiery or the leopard print one piece. Be her bound of her spanking, Bettie Page is an image burnt into our minds and carried forever. She left her mark, be it a hand print on the ass of an anonymous tartlet, or simply a smile on our faces.

Bettie Page, wherever you are... I love you and always will...

    by bacci40

at least, not in the classic sense...but she was totally comfortable with her body and unlike the other nude models or strippers at the time, looked like the girl next door...which is what she was...add to that her smile...her neverending smile...and a star was born...there is an amazing pic of her at the playboy mansion at 80...not sure why she didnt want pics taken of her...she was still stunning....

    by keltic1701

Bettie possesed the ability to be saucy enough to fulfill the fantasies of most men (and lots of teenage boys) and want women to be like her. She also could be the sweet girl next door that you could take home to mom. Bettie Page has been often imitated, but never duplicated and will always be missed by her fans. God's speed Bettie!

The girl next door thing and being comfortable in ones own skin was really what made her sexy...also that she has a naughty streak in her with her fetish dress. Today, the sex goddesses are all plastic surgery mistakes slowly melting before our eyes, RIP Bettie.

I guess it's a way of expressing how this is personal to you, but it comes off as self-centered by saying, essentially, "why did she have to die on my birthday?" Her death would have been a sad thing, no matter which day it happened. Rest in peace, Bettie.

This is how her death hit me. Celebrating my birthday, I come home at around 1:36am - and find out one of my favorite beings has passed away.

BETTIE was one of the sweet souls in this world. She was religious, yet open with her body. She was exploited gleefully - and later made that an industry. I'm sorry if writing from my perspective and very REAL and HONEST approach offends you, but it is how I react to news like this... as a human being. Not like the AP which has a pre-written article sitting in a file waiting for the death specifics to plug in and publish. I write from my heart - and this news UPSET me because we've had a piss poor year of losing icon after icon. But if your reaction is to get angry at me, feel free. We each deal in our own way. Me - I'm just sad that Bettie is gone.

Anyway, I don't know much about Bettie Page except that she was very pretty and looked great naked. She certainly made a lot of people happy through being such a lovely photographic subject. I'll take your word for it that she was a sweet person too...sad that we can't live forever but at least she had a long (and hopefully good) life.

    Definitely a Sad Day

    by arcangel2020

I read that she passed away earlier this morning here on the East Coast and was saddened to hear/read the news.
She suffered a heart attack and went into a coma and never recovered.
To say that she was an "Icon" to many is an understatement.
I remember growing up and seeing some of her 50-ies pics pinned up on the wall of my Uncles workbench area of the garage where he would work on cars and motorcycles...and as a youngster even then thinking how pretty cool she was (ok! ok!! ok!!! I thought she was hot! Ha!).
She had SUCH an impression on a lot of people (especially the women I knew) who were into the whole retro-50-ies look as well as the BDSM crowd too.
I hope that she rests in peace and that whereever she is...she knows and is happy with the fact that she was adored, respected and made a HUGE impression on millions of guys and girls growing up.
Thank you Betty and Rest In Peace...there will NEVER be anothor like you in this World of ours!

True, but she had an attractivness that's hard to define.Plus lets not forget that ,most of her photos , were taken by amatuers, under shitty lighting conditions {or harsh daylight } and are unretouched , and she still looked great.I've never seen a bad pic of her.Her pics seem natural.I for one detest the ,overlit ,photoshopped to death , pics that make every actress/model look like the same flawless and fake .

But, seriously, while I can understand Harry's initial reaction as one of sad irony I think that, with time, he's going to be a little embarrassed with this obit. It does come off as a little self-oriented and demonstrates why its sometimes better to not "toss off" a reaction to something in print or on the web.

    by bojtrek

I know I am lazy for saying this, but why doesn't AICN ever post a picture of the person they post about. YES, I can go to Yahoo! or some other search site and find Betty Page. But is there some reason behind the lack of photos in stories? Most of the time I will not know what the person named looks like until I search. Does this bug anyone else? Eulogies and the Eulogizer

    by potsmokinalien

It's tough to write a good eulogy; Beaks' for David Foster Wallace earlier this year I remember being pretty perfect. You don't want a bloodless AP story that contains no emotional reaction to the death, true-- but then again you don't want to relate the person's death entirely to *you* and how it makes *you* feel. The fine line that Beaks, and for that matter Peter Jackson also walked it pretty perfectly earlier in the week for Forrest Ackerman, are good examples: if you knew them, you want to find anecdotal stories involving you and the deceased that aren't self-aggrandizing, but instead illuminate the life and character of the deceased. If you were a fan, you want to describe your love or appreciation for the deceased's work in a way that is relatable, not just personal.Where "whining about how the deceased ruined your birthday by dying on it" fits in I'm not sure; I guess I would recommend avoiding doing that entirely.

Maybe Betty's family can help you through the grief of having your birthday ruined. Defend yourself all you want, but you should know by now that a headline always sets a tone, and your headline for most of us was just came off as yet another selfish childish, inapropriate reaction. Seriously I saw that headline and had this image of you with cake all over your face and a half unwrapped present in your hands mumbling "well fuck, so much for this day being about me. She couldn't wait a day?" We get it, you're sensitive, but most of the time you come off as an over grown child on an neverending quest to get attention and affection. So, yeah people are going to react they way they did to your headline. I really can't wait for Moriarty's new website to open, so I don't have to keep coming here and wading through your jibberish looking for decent reports from him and a couple other of your writers that I respect. You want our respect? Grow up, your behaviour with this story may seem minor and you probably will be clueless as to why it annoys so many of us, but for us it's just another reason amongst many why you have become such a joke to alot of us.

You gave a perfectly human reaction, I took no offense at it. We all react to bad news personally like that, its just some people think because you're a public figure you should act more robotic I guess. Whether I agree with your opinions or not, I always feel I get exactly how you feel, rather then your interpretation on how you SHOULD feel. What's more honest and heart felt then that? And besides, if ANYONE in talkback used your headline, no one would care. So ignore the double standards.

    Robert Prosky too, folks...

    by the_patriot

Thanks, Mosquito March and Grammation - Everybody on this site seems to have missed that Robert Prosky died yesterday too. Actor Robert Prosky has died at a hospital near his home in Washington DC. He was 77.

Prosky enjoyed a long stage career, and starred in more than 200 Broadway productions and over 100 plays at the Arena Theatre in Washington, a venue close to his heart.

But he will be best remembered by most for his film and TV roles, with appearances in movies Dead Man Walking, Mrs Doubtfire, Hoffa and Far and Away and shows Cheers and Hill Street Blues.

Prosky's eldest son Stefan reveals the star died on Monday night (8Dec08) after undergoing a heart procedure.

He says, "He went gracefully last night, not in pain. Everybody knows him as a fairly famous actor. My brothers and I know him as a marvellous father."

Prosky is survived by his wife, Ida, and three sons, Stefan, John and Andrew.

It's nice that the movie about her was made before she passed. I hope she made a little money off of it. (she got zero for all the constant reprinting of her photos) she lived a very simple and reclusive life, privately going out on occational "dates" with the late Dave Stevens (I still can't believe he's gone too)She had a natural beauty that the camera doesn't always record, but in this instance, the camera loved her face. She didn't have that slutty or hard living look that strippers and models of that era had, she always seemed to be expressing an infectous joy of life. Thanks for Sharing, Bettie, we'll all miss you.

    by snomusic

For the haters at Harry 'making it about him' - this IS Harry's site and everything he posts on here relates to his feelings on whatever he posts about. It seems Harry can't post anything on his site without getting slammed by SOMEONE. Personally I'd be pretty bummed if someone I had an interest or fascination with died on my birthday - wouldn't you? On a side note, I'm suprised no-ne pointed out the irony of brattyben's post - "She lives in my town".

You want to wind up on a dialysis machine 20 years down the road with the possibilities of having your legs and fingers chopped off due to poor circulation with a pump placed around your heart with a push button on it to remove the excess fluid build up??? Harry I hope the drinky stuff is once in a blue moon. My grandfather suffered everything that killed him from drinking while having diabetes. I've never seen a man go through so much hell and pain. It was pure hell man. OK, no more mother/brother "Listen to me now and believe me later" bullshit. Happy B day. by cagliostro

..the fact that everything Harry says sounds like it came out of the mouth of a gay 9 year old. Bettie Page was a stripper, nothing more. The whole "Girl Next Door" bit was to keep everyone involved with her out of jail. She was never any kind of cultural icon when she was working. Hipster dip-shits turned her into that. None of us ever knew her and what we know of her isn't real, it's a projected image. Stop acting like someone just farted at your mother's funeral, geez.

Bettie Page truly was a living goddess

    by oisin5199

yes, I know I'm talking about her 'image,' her status as icon, and not the real person who had many problems and led a very troubled life. But I think her image itself has taken on a life of its own in the American collective consciousness, 2nd only to Marilyn Monroe. By coincidence, I have a representation of her on a Tarot-type playing card someone gave me that I wedged between the ropes on my African drum. For me, she embodies the figure of the divine feminine. She will forever live on as a representation of Goddess. Kore! RIP Betty.

But who own's Bettie Page's image? Her photos have generated millions (I'm guessing) and she's been on t-shirts, book covers, etc. Did she ever see any money from that? Will her loved ones receive any royalties? That aside, I'm saddened to hear of her death. Such a beauty and it sounds, by all accounts, that she was a great human being as well.Rest in peace Ms. Page

    Important Death on My Birthday

    by mrstinger

While I understand the offensivness of the headline, and the self-centeredness of the obit, I can relate to how Harry felt. Robert F. Kennedy was shot on my 10th birthday. All my little 10-year-old mind could fathom was that my presents were being delayed while my parents watched the news. I didn't truly understand the impact of those events until many years later--how different a world this is because of the events of that day.

For the rest of my life, every time I reach a significant birthday, 20, 30, 40, this year 50, stories appear about the anniversary of the assassination. Those stories bring back intensely personal memories for me, as well as some feelings of embarrassment when I recall my childish reaction to such a momentous tragedy.

In the long run, no matter how defensive he is right now, Harry will regret framing Bettie Page's obituary in those terms. While he won't face annual media reminders of the anniversary, as I do, he will probably recall, at least next time, that this beautiful woman has been gone for a year, and his alcohol-fueled writings will make him cringe.

The best thing that could happen is for a new obituary to be written (with some pictures, of course), some of the nicer reactions excerpted from this talkback and posted to the new story, and this entire stream of messages shitcanned. And in that talkback, nobody could post "first." Wouldn't that be a good thing, too?

My wishes and prayers go out to her family and to all who loved Bettie Page. This world just became a little less beautiful when she left it.

And those fuckheads talking about someone important dying on their birthday... stop giving whiny excuses about how as a kid it ruined your birthday. mine is 9/11 and so is my nephew's [it was his 5th in 2001]. he took it well enough and handled it way more mature than some of the retards whining here. and before someone jumps down my throat for use of word retard, i work with kids with Down's Syndrome every weekend... so cut the crap.
