Televisionary Has A Review of The Brannon Braga/David Goyer Script For ABC’s Sci-Fi Time Travel Pilot FLASH FORWARD!!

Published at:  Dec 12, 2008 12:35:07 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

David S. Goyer (“Blade: The Series”) and Brannon Braga (“Star Trek: Enterprise”) – who earlier collaborated on CBS’ short-lived alien-invasion drama “Threshold” – scripted “Flash Forward,” based on the sci-fi novel by Robert J. Sawyer.

The book is about what happens when physicists, conducting a super-high-energy experiment, accidentally cause everyone on Earth to experience two minutes and 17 seconds of his or her own future 21 years hence.

Already cast in the pilot are Joseph Fiennes (“Shakespeare In Love”), John Cho (“Harold & Kumar”), Jack Davenport ("Swingtown"), Courtney B. Vance (“Law & Order: Criminal Intent”) and the girl who plays Penny Widmore on “Lost.”

Televisionary has read the script and offers a verdict:

While Goyer and Braga's script stumbles in a few parts and the dialogue could use a little tweaking in some places (the scene between Dominic and Kathryn was a little on the nose, for example), the overall result is pretty damn strong, offering up a potential series that--like Lost before it--tackles the notions of fate versus free will, preordained destiny versus random chaos, and a life-altering experience that will shake several characters' perceptions, outlooks, and core identities as they adapt to new circumstances.

that's a shame. Also, Goyer's work is wildly uneven.

    by crow3711

What a person who was 85 and in an old folks home saw when it happened? Nothing? Heaven? Anything? I hope they address this at some point, because that could be an interesting thing to explore. Sounds like a reasonably cool show, I'll give it a chance.

This is kinda like that Bourne story a few days ago.

    by disneyfanatic

The plot of that was so obviously Casino Royale that we weren't sure whether or not it was a valid target. How can you criticize something on something so completely obvious? Same here, but substitute CR with LOST.

    by gotilk

Pretty much every story about a show failing or succeeding makes me think of Journeyman and how cheated it was. How cheated WE were. Still bothers me deeply.
But to stay on topic, I do think this sounds interesting. Didn't like much of Threshold. Peter (The Station Agent) Dinklage is great in pretty much anything he does though. He stole that show.

    Braga

    by dibarahman

Braga did some real good NExt Gen episodes, and all his time travel stuff was quality. Much better than the Sarah Connor time travel stuff that has been going on, so look forward to seeing the new stuff.

    Hopeful

    by cobbio

Good to hear the script was "strong." Don't know if I'll necessarily feel that way when I see the pilot, but David S. Goyer has written a few solid nuggets in the past, and Robert J. Sawyer's book is fairly huge in scope, so I'm hopeful.
Braga is the man I worry about. He tends to write cautious rather than daring, and tends to neuter important scenes instead of embracing them as part of a compelling drama. I hope he's learned from his awful mistakes on "Enterprise," but that's probably wishful thinking. The man loves science fiction, which is great, but he'll need to show me something intense and mind-blowing to get my attention with this show. I hope he does.
Because Sawyer's book, especially the ending, is mind-smashingly tasty. If the show goes anywhere near the scale of the book's ending, I'll get goosebumps.
    We'll see.

Penny Widmore is killed by terminators...

    by turketron

I already saw it on Terminator: TSCC. So, that's one mystery out of the way. Also, like someone else said, what do people who are gonna be dead before 21 years see?

People who are dead in 21 years...

    by mrmonomaniac

... experience nothing. They aren't aware that 2 minutes have even passed. It goes black and they wake up. It's an important part of the story.

    Here's what will happen

    by white goodman

The first half of the season will be great. Then the network will start interfering with the show. The showrunner will quit in a huff. The new showrunner will have no idea what the hell they're doing and everyone will despise it by the third season. It will be canceled by the end of the third season with no resolution.

Question: my English isn't the best

    by dogrobber

Televisionary wrote "dialoque could use a little tweaking...(The scene between D & K was a little on the nose)". I thought getting something on the nose meant getting it right (right on the nose)? Does the reviewer mean they were too obvious about something?

Instead of hoping for another "LOST"

    by dingbatty

by copying the formula, perhaps they should attempt to come up with something original. They tried it with "The Nine" -- even had a former Party of Five-r in it -- and look how that went over.

    by dioxholster

really boring and LOST is really boring too. FRINGE is much more exciting than boring LOST. and Stargate Universe is probably gonna suck too with all the characters acting as though they were in LOST and gay characters running around just to be edgy.

By "on the nose" he means it's being very obvious about making a point. There's usually a more elegant way to make a point than shove it in your face and force it down your throat.

This does not seem like time travel per say....

    by thehichhiker

This actually heavily reminiscent of Vonnegut's Timequake. There is no actual time travel possibility, it was just a one shot deal which no one was anticipating - and by the time the show is going no time travel plot lines are possible (thank god!) Its pretty much normal non-supernatural series except that everyone has this one piece of information. They will probably take Lost format and concentrate each episode one one person's experience, what they say they experienced, what they actually experienced, etc. But the focus SHOULD be on what is happening now and how it is shaped by this bit of information.

If given good writers, this could be a very interesting concept. But that is exactly why it will probably suck. Even with good writers, the studios will much about with it until it is garbage (just look what they are doing to The Unit in the name of ratings..)

All in all, good concept for a book, doubt they have the skills and will to make a good series of it.
