Live in Chicago? Wanna see THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON? Capone has the details!!!
Hey folks. Capone in Chicago here just getting everything ready for my flight tomorrow to Austin for BNAT X. But before I hope onto my private bootlegger jet headed due south to be a pawn in Harry's annual mind fuck, I wanted to let folks in the Chicago area know that I still have a couple holiday treats for them before the year is out.
2008 has been the absolute best year we've ever had for AICN screenings in Chicago, but these last two films are something extraordinary for very different reasons. I'll have details on the second film when I get back from BNAT, but I wanted to begin the contest for the first film right as I'm about to leave. Both offerings are without a doubt awards contenders, and I believe both will floor you completely and utterly.
First, we have 200 seats for an advanced screening of THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON on Thursday, December 18, 7:00pm at a theater in downtown Chicago. We don't have the whole theater to ourselves on this one, but we have half of it.
Here's how to win. Send me an email at capone@aintitcoolmail.com with the subject line: "BUTTON ME UP". I need your name, whether or not you are bringing a guest (I don't need your guest's name, just tell me if you're a +1 or not), and in the body of the email answer the following question in 50 WORDS OR LESS: What would be the greatest thing about growing old in reverse? Can you imagine how messed up puberty in reverse would be?
Deadline is Sunday midnight to get those applications in. I'll start looking over all entries when I get back from BNAT, and send out emails to the winners with details on the screening early next week. Just print out the email and come to the theater. You folks are going to love this film. Good luck!

The few. The weird. The people that think this looks dumb.

at a screening that was held at the theatre I work at last Wednesday. One of the best of 2008, loved it, soon to be classic.
-
...and it was beautiful and sad and surprisingly funny. It may be Brad Pitt's best work. Certainly David Fincher's most emotional film. I loved it. Bring a date!
-
You are not special because you saw it and it would only be a classic if had a heart. That said, it's technically perfect and one of the better movies of a very crappy year of cinema.
-
Thats a good thing for growing old in reverse...right?

by badmrwonka
I will kill someone. all these Chicago screenings sound SO fun, and I would bve at every goddamn one of them if I lived there. Vern is in Seattle, right? hook us up! we got lots of great theaters!
-
I think what you meant to say was, "Even though this particular movie doesn't interest me, I think it's great that you offer your site visitors in the Chicago area the chance to see a new movie for free."right? I mean, you aren't so much of a dick that you're insulting AICN for giving away free tickets to an advance screening, are you?

(Forrest Gump - sappy bullshit) + Fincher = AWESOME

Benjamin Button is not really about anything more than a sappy love story that is completely predictable. The fact he is aging backwards is hardly addressed, and has no poignancy. Especially since they rush the most intriguing portion of the story, him becoming a child again, in the last 15 minutes through montage. This is not even taking into account how the movie does not even follow it's own internal logic. The film would almost be no different if it was about Pitt getting old instead of young, cause the theme is the same, if there is a theme, that nothing lasts. You don't need to age backwards to know that. They're like "Oh how awful, you're going to see all your friends die." I don't see why, he'll see the same amount of people die whether he is aging backwards or forwards. It's an empty, soulless film, the kind Fincher is accustomed to. But the aging backwards thing is a mere plot device for a badly done love story, it is hardly ever addressed in any meaningful way. And don't even get me started on all the fat that could have been trimmed. So much could have been cut out without effecting the story at all. Always the sign of a poorly done film with no real reason for being.

I saw it last night, and I agree with you for the most part. The central conceit is almost completely ignored. It seems to me much more interesting themes could have been mined from the process of aging backward. There were several missed opportunities. I have other issues with the narrative of the film (most notably with a decision made by the lead characters at the second act that I simply didn't buy), but that's the primary one. I don't mean to bash the movie; I still like Fincher, and the film is an impressive technical feat. It just felt like a rather hollow slog.
