FAST & FURIOUS, THE WOLFMAN, And NOTTINGHAM Change Release Dates!!

Published at:  Dec 10, 2008 12:34:06 PM CST

Merrick here...

We don't usually address changes of release dates on AICN (not sure why, just usually doesn't happen). But , in this instance, multiple high-profile titles...all of which have been covered extensively here on the site...have shifted release dates & we thought you might wanna know.

Universal Pictures has pushed back the release of horror franchise hopeful "The Wolfman" from April 3 to Nov. 6 and taken Ridley Scott's "Nottingham" out of 2009 entirely. Also, U's "The Fast and the Furious 4" will now open on April 3, instead of June 12.

"Nottingham," toplining Russell Crowe, will open in 2010, but U did not set a specific date.

...says THIS ARTICLE in Variety.

Interesting that Variety refers to THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS 4 by that title; last I heard it was FAST AND FURIOUS (per the film's trailer HERE, and the movie's official website HERE). Wonder if it was just presumption/shorthand, or if there's been a change?

The release date of Will Ferrell's LAND OF THE LOST remains uncganged (it's June 5).

Fast and furious being released earlier is probably to try and avoid competing with the big summer flicks like Transformers etc

My theory is - and please note that it's just a theory that can be disproved as soon as we see the first trailer - that Universal tries to sell The Wolfman as a "serious" horrormovie and not as Halloween fun.

The Sheriff AND Robin in some kind of crazy twist?? Maybe they should just axe it altogether. I mean, how many Robin Hood adaptations can we endure? The BBC Robin Hood series is still running FFS.

    by george newman

I was very much against this franchise for 2 and 3 (never wasted time to see Tokyo Drift) but this trailer actually made part 4 look really interesting. I think this role is the only one of Diesel's that I actually buy. He's been pretty unappealing in everything else (although i've been meaning to see his Lumet flick for a long time)

or something.Honestly, 4 Fast 4 Furious is pretty high on my anticipation list for next year. I never got why they were putting it out in the summer, I figured competition was low becuz there were just no big sequels or comic book movies and they would try to hit an empty summer and take a bigger share of the tickets than they would get against Iron Man 2 or a new James Bond movie or something. But this earlier release date makes more sense for the type of movie it is.

or Wolfman. But I have more interest in Nottingham. And F&F? that April release puts it all of 1 week before Dragonball - which could be good or bad for F&F.

Ah well. Just means I have longer to save for the summer season (Wolverine, TF2, HP, others)

Both the Sherrif and Robin Hood are going to be good guys. In the movie they are the same character, not just the same actor. The Sheriff, fed up with the corruption that he is a party to with Prince John, decides to do something about it with an alter ego i.e. Robin Hood. Sounds like an interesting take to me.

It means they believe it can hold its own against the big fall/holiday movies. The Wolfman script was a balls-out good time. If they shot that script, this will be one great film. they might even have awards in mind, releasing it so late in the year ...

There was a rumor going around a while back that had Crowe's Sheriff of Nottingham creating the character Robin Hood and masquerading as him to effect political change or some sort. Needless to say that the idea was met with an alarming amount of criticism on this site.

I work in the industry - I can say "it's great, I loved it" or "it sucked, I hated it" but I can't say much else. Sorry. This one was a definite loved it, and I am a big-time horror hound. It's got a strong enough story - but even better, a few scenes of unbelievable carnage. Like I said: if they shot the script I read, it's going to be awesome. I'm only worried that they might try to tone down the violence if they think it's a "prestige picture." Let's all hope NOT.

    by thead

is because there simply isn't time to make the movie before the end of next year. Unless I heard wrong, I don't think they're even filming yet. For a movie like that to come out in 2009 would be pushing it even if they started filming it today.
