Images for Brad Bird's RAY GUNN, I AM LEGEND and more!

Published at:  Jul 11, 1999 10:22:18 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with some more groovy links to some stuff found out there in the nether of the Internet. It seems that an amazingly talented production artist named Sylvain Despretz has a very cool homepage that showcases some examples of his work on films like: ALIEN RESURRECTION, SUPERNOVA, THE FIFTH ELEMENT, etc. And while some of the work there is for these past films, he has a few glimpses at some of the work he has done for films yet to be seen, and perhaps never to be seen.

Now, many of you are quite excited for Brad Bird's first feature, THE IRON GIANT, and are more than likely quite curious as to what he has in store for the future. Well, I'm sure many of you have heard that Brad Bird was allegedly talking with George Lucas about some sort of animated STAR WARS film/television series. Well, this is and always has been BUNK! But I do know that George saw THE IRON GIANT and he and Brad Bird did allegedly talk. The current rumor that's floating around from whispering lip to open ears is that Brad pitched Lucas RAY GUNN... and he might have bit at the bait. Nothing really firm quite yet, but while Brad Bird does have a deal at Warners... He might end up doing his long dreamed of project, RAY GUNN, that he spoke a bit of in Moriarty's Interview with Brad Bird. Below are links to both of the pre-production sketches by Sylvain Despretz...

Futuristic City from Brad Bird's RAY GUNN

Also, Sylvain worked on the Ridley Scott helmed I AM LEGEND, before Ridley walked off that project for GLADIATOR. Sylvain has put up some STORYBOARDS from that production. Be sure to follow the links through all the storyboards once you get there!

Then there is this, Bill Ward-esque, shot from EYES WIDE SHUT (for mature eyes only please!).

However, this is just a few tasty treats. You'll want to head over to Sylvain's Page to check out all his work, he really is amazing!

    Thank you Brad Bird

    by devils halo

You have single-handedly saved not only WBFA, but renewed my faith in Warner Bros. I have had a chance to see IRON GIANT today and I must say I will be surprised if this doesn not win an Oscar nomination for Best Picture! A truly moving story and amazing animation. Thank you thank you thank you! I look forward to your future projects.

    Nice sketch...

    by prankster

This is great news...I really hope Lucas bit. He has the clout to get this movie made, dammit! I'm glad that Bird signed a contract with WB for...was it one or two more films? But I'm a bit paranoid that if Iron Giant flops it'll spell the end of that. That would be a shame since Bird is the first animation director in a while to really put his unique stamp on a movie, rather than the assembly-line method we usually get. (I suppose you could argue that Katzenberg has creative control over his movies, but I feel his genius is more in narrative flow than artistic style, which is where I'd like to see more innovative stuff happening in animation.) Anyway, that "femme" sketch for Ray Gunn was really nice design...sort of Old West meets Cyberpunk. I hope this gets made, I do I do!

    Wishful Thinking

What we really need is a Brad Bird directed / Alan Moore scripted version of "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman" with a "Disney" (or Lucas, for that matter) sized budget.

Man, imagine that done by Ridley Scott starring Arnold... damn, what a shame...

    The Fifth Element sketches...monolith?

    by bigjackiev

After viewing the sketches on that page (cool stuff) I must wonder...what's up with the "monolith" in the 5th Element sketches? What part of the movie is that? Did it ever get shot? Long live Luc Besson and let's all hope Joan of Arc has him back in full form.

    I second this emotion

    by methos

I hope Brad Bird is successful, too. I cannot remember the last time I saw a great animated anything. I just hope he can swing it with Lucas. Lucas has an undying hatred for Warner Bros. Sure it was a different regime decades ago, but I can't see Lucas ever working with them in any capacity besides ILM. btw: Luc Besson rules! Subway, 5th Element, anything. Love him!
