Orci / Kurtzman + Wiseman =

Published at:  Dec 05, 2008 9:16:20 AM CST

Merrick here...

As previously reported (HERE), Kurtzman and Orci are looking to adapt Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's ATLANTIS RISING comics over at DreamWorks.

And, as you can probably conjecture from the headline, the project now looks to be one step closer to reality with the addition of Len Wiseman as director.

[INSERT OBLIGATORY WISEMAN BASHING HERE]

Wiseman's name has recently been attached to at least 9,372,441,864,031 projects. Among them: the struggling & wholly unnecessary ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake (for which Ratner was later indicated, if you can imagine such a thing) & the GEARS OF WAR movie, which fell off the radar and hasn't been heard from for a while (unless I missed something, which I may have).

It's too early in the morning to start drinking here. Although, it's already later in the day somewhere on Earth...

    Wiseman

    by a-cod

No hate here for Wiseman. the guy makes glossy "B" movies and he has a hot wife. An original movie about Atlantis? Knock yourself out dude. Where geeks get mad is when these guys get handed established properties that nobody wants to see change(X3, Die Hard, and Red Dragon). The Rat or Wiseman's Escape From New York would have worked for me. It was a "B" movie to begin with anyway, who was going to direct it anyway Spielberg Cameron? Yeah right. If Burton really wanted to escape the rut he's been in he would take a stab at New York. Leave the cutesy goth stuff behind you and try some R rated action.

White Jazz, the James Ellroy pic? Passengers? Damn these teasing directors - damn them to hell.

    by archive

is a pretty cool guy, and is very committed to making good movies. While I may have wanted more (and less) from Die Hard 4 than I got, Die Hard isn't a franchise that's maintained an ironclad brand of quality storytelling in my eyes, and the standard that LFODH had to live up to wasn't sacrosanct.

    - what's with all the hate? Here's a guy growing as a filmmaker, and making successful movies in the meantime. Personally, they may not be what I'm looking for, but the guy is developing new content, built a franchise that a lot of people love which WASN'T a comic first, and is always looking to up his game. I'll say it - I like Len Wiseman!

    ATLANTIS RISING!!!!!

    by uberman

And what, may I ask, is an 'ATLANTIS RISING?' I'm guessing an excuse to break out the sets and costumes from LOGANS RUN, set it on an island and create a long lost race who are wise beyond our imaginings and have flying chariots and such. Since you wont tell me what its about, I'm gonna guess this is it, so I'll go out on a limb as state for the record that it sucks.

Len Wiseman - Decent Production Schedule = Surprisingly Good Die

    by vote fa stokes brutha

Live Free or Die Hard was refreshingly good compared to what I was expecting. Yes, Wiseman's coverage was spotty and lent for some really obvious editing faux pas, but overall you can tell from the featurettes that the whole schedule was just ruining him. I've seen about 10 minutes of an Underworld movie and it looked bad. I'm willing to give him a chance and this particular project seems interesting. Orci and Kurtzman seem okay (M:I 3 was, again, refreshingly good), but Transformers was awful.

Though they aspire to be worthy of even licking the dogshit from the fine-ass shoes of Jane Espenson, while they suckle at the teat of bland mainstream Hollywood shite, they will forever know the agony of NEVER WRITING A DECENT FUCKING SCRIPT WORTH READING! If it weren't for Megan Fox and ILM, what the fuck was worth watching in TRANSFORMERS anyway?

He's only made 3 movies so far. The Underworld movies are good horror/action entertainment, nothing more or less. Live Free or Die Hard is a fun, stupid action sequel to what is a fun, stupid action franchise. If you dont like his movies, fine, but Wiseman hardly had the kind of Bay/Ratner/Boll resume that can justify bashing.

    Atlantis Rising: The Story Breakdown

    by media messiah

I looked this up on a web site:

For thousands of years, the legendary continent of Atlantis has thrived unencumbered by those who live on Earth's surface. Now after decades of surface pollution, from oil spills to off-shore dumping, the Atlantean way of life has been threatened, bringing the two civilizations to the brink of all-out war.
"With the ongoing debate regarding global climate change, Atlantis Rising offers a mix of real-world issues, combined with suspense and action on an epic scale," says Platinum Studios Comics Publisher, Sean O'Reilly.

They offered the first issue of Atlantis for a quarter, but sadly I don't know anybody who bought it. To be fair, though, it got pretty good reviews. (Well, okay, I don't know that "Much of the story reads like an ... underdeveloped screenplay" is that positive.) In any case, it turns out the Atlanteans are actually aliens who crashed here thousands of years ago, and now they're pissed. And there's a reporter, Angelica Danielson, who's on the trail of a missing industrialist who may be tied into the reasons for the Atlanteans' annoyance. It's not much of a spoiler to say that the confrontation between the humans and aliens heats up in future issues of the miniseries.
This is the latest in a recent line of comics that got movie deals either before they published their first issue, or soon afterwards. Readers complain about comics that read like movie pitches, but the result seems to work for Hollywood.

Orci and Kurtzman, why are they hired at all? They blow. Wiseman? His greatest feat is getting Kate Beckinsale to marry him. Let's see, O+K did Transformers, Fringe, The Island, Eagle Eye and M:I 3, Wiseman did Underworlds, and Die Hard 4, if you can name one good film or show on that list, you don't know shit.
