Miller Is Still ON JUSTICE LEAGUE After All!!

Published at:  Dec 03, 2008 8:24:33 AM CST

Merrick here...

A few days ago, Dark Horizons posted a story that was quickly linked out to by many sites. Said story involved George Miller's appearance on an Australian morning show called SUNRISE, where Miller revealed he was now completely uninvolved with the long-brewing JUSTICE LEAGUE movie project.

Turns out, THIS NEVER HAPPENED. A release from Kennedy Miller Mitchell sharply debunked the reports, saying:

This scoop was entirely fabricated.

George Miller did not appear on the ‘Sunrise Morning Show’ let alone confirm anything about JUSTICE LEAGUE or MAD MAX. The facts are indeed the complete opposite to what was reported.

You can find our coverage of the original DH article HERE, and DH's retraction of the news HERE.

so does that mean he DOES have mel up for a mad max 4?

i'd still rather have Eric Bana, and for them to pretend like thunderdome didn't happen, and the discrepencies in the movies to be chalked up to that each is a tale told by those that mad max crossed paths with, and are innacurate

    by zom-bot.com

yeah that discrepency always bugged me. when max comes across bruce spence in his hideout, he says 'YOU....' knowingly, as if he was the gyrocaptain. but bruce never seems to really makes mention of it, other than being sheepish. i think there is enough evidence there to suggest he WAS the same gyrocaptain, as he is still into flying, has a child (assumed in the coupling with the pudgy blonde in road warrior)..and well, is still bruce spence. Just because he is listed as "Jedediah the Pilot" doesn't mean his name wasn't jedediah when he was the gyrocaptain.they just hadn't established his name.the confusing part is that the narration of the elder feral boy says that the gyrocaptain eventually became the leader of his tribe...throwing a wrench in the continuity

    by gilkuliehe

Me. That's who. I care. George Miller is a truly excepctional filmmaker. Anyone who thinks otherwise is simply wrong, or is someone who doesn'r appreciate the sames things I do, regarding movies. I can't believe this, but some talkbacker actually suggested Michael fucking Bay to direct this movie. How to put this subtly? There's more craftsmanship and refined visual storytelling in ten minutes of HAPPY FEET than in ALL OF MICHAEL BAY'S ENTIRE FILMOGRAPHY. That's right. Ten minutes of CGI penguins tapdancing and sliding down the snow outsmart six feature films. That is fact.
I can't wait for this movie, and I honestly can't believe the fuckers who are badmouthing it.

    by varakor

when I say that I really wanna see what a George Miller "Justice League" will look like. Right now we haven't seen much of anything that confirms suckdom. Geekdom mostly wants DC/Warner to follow Marvel, when in fact these are established characters already and we don't need backstories for us to know who they are, we just need one BIG, kick ass story because you can't do Justice League any other way. I have faith in George Miller's abilities as a director and before I start crying foul, I wanna see what he has up it's sleeve. You all know you wanna, that way if it does suck you can come back and say "I was right!" But I don't think it will suck. Warner, get off your asses, give Miller the money to make his movie already.

    Miller or no...

    by the eskimo

...I think this could work if they set it in an alternate universe...away from the current Superman/Batman franchises. If it was a fast paced, action oriented, and maybe a little hammy I think we could all accept it for what it is: an action movie. If they try to make it too realistic there is no way we are going to like it. That is going to be the ultimate doom of the Avengers movie if Marvel keeps going in this direction. I just don't see how a super-teamup movie can be taken seriously. Make it light and fun and good CGI and I'm there! Brooding Aquaman...no so much.

Everytime a Talkback is created for this film we get the same old "this will suck!" posts. Do you kids ever tire saying the same thing over and over again?Personally, I'm very interested in this project. There was a time when AICN would actually go and dig up stuff before a film came out. I think the people burying this project as garbage before a frame of film has even been shot are the fanboy version of those who go out to be "First!" in a talkback. But, if going around uninformed has a solution, it's a site like AICN that's supposed to provide it. You guys must have access to someone who's read the script, seen the sets and preproduction art, seen the costumes, etc. What's the issue in not doing some actual digging and reporting on what was actually planned?

2013 -- GREEN LANTERN (w/Hal Jordan as Green Lantern and Sinestro as the villain) and JUSTICE LEAGUE (w/these five + Aquaman and Martian Manhunter and w/Darkseid as the villain)

If Nolan doesn't do another Batman

    by trombone

My guess is this will be the re-launch of Batman and Superman as well. This is the limbo. If Nolan says "I'm in" for TDK2, then they will do another Superman and hold on Justice League. If not, we have restarts (again) for both franchises. The blow will be softened by the ensemble movie.

If Nolan doesn't do another Batman

    by thecomedian

They'll just get somebody else and continue the story of the Bale Batman on the run eventually gaining redemption. Dark Knight made a billion at the box office. WB's not going to ditch that and start over just because of Christopher Nolan's ego. They'll just get David Fincher instead.

Comedian:Would the public be confused by 2 different Batmen?

    by trombone

I don't think they would release both another Batman and a Justice League movie with two different Batmen. So the question is, which one do they release? Nolan has said very clearly that his Batman could not exist in a world where Superman already existed. Batman had to be the first hero.
And if they didn't care about releasing both films at the same time, why haven't they moved forward on Justice League?

Batman is a fictional character that has been and will be played by different actors. And in comics, cartoons, and movies simultaneously. Frankly, I worry about anyone over the age of 8 that can't cope with that idea.

    by mosquito march

Get some real fucking actors. IRON MAN and DARK KNIGHT are all the evidence Miller needs that big names are the way to go. Even the HULK reboot was elevated by the presence of great actors. We don't need a bunch of no-face, no-name teenagers starring as grown-up heroes.

I agree 100%. I have no problems with Miller on this project - while not one of my personal favs, he has done a lot of good work over the decades.

Regardless of Miller's involvement though, WB MUST recast this for it to work... right now this could be a CW MOW.

    Sorry to rehash this, but

    by vern

the "it must be Christian Bale" thing I keep hearing befuddles the shit out of me. I think THE DARK KNIGHT is a truly great movie, and part of the reason why is because Nolan was smart enough to treat it as a somewhat realistic police procedural and not what is traditionally thought of as a "comic book movie." If it's a choice between him doing a third one or Justice League then fine, I'll go with Nolan, but I don't see what the problem is with Batman 3 and another unrelated movie that has a different version of Batman as part of the ensemble.
People keep saying that having a different Batman in Justice League would interfere with the Nolan series... how is that? I think you have it exactly backwards. Having Christian Bale play the character but this time in a magical world of aliens, superman and a fucking guy with a magic ring from space that turns into a giant fist to punch a gorilla but he's afraid of the color yellow... THAT would kill the Nolan series, at least for me.
Please explain this one to me. I thought we as citizens of the world were in agreement about the greatness of THE DARK KNIGHT but when people say they want to see that character in a movie with Wonderwoman and Green Space Ring Man I have to conclude that we saw different movies or something.

    by c a iversen

On some levels, I totally agree with what you just said. On others however, you couldn't be more wrong. You totally insulted long time readers of the Green Lantern comic book series and DC fans in general.

Where is it written that the excellently portrayed action and drama of The Dark Knight was a realistic, real world scenario? He's a man dressed as a bat doing vigilante justice on a multi-billionare budget against clowns and scarecrows.

Everything can work if the formula is right. Movies have always been about formula and balance. You should know that by now Vern. I just think your view was a little too polar.

I think the fans are trying to say they want Bale (I really don't care as long as the new guy's good), because their could be a chance that one of the new Justice League heroes or villians may end up being introduced into a future cross-over with a Batman or Superman film.

Really, if well enough done, how hard would it to be to get Bale for 2 weeks and film enough of him for 25-30 mins of screen-time? Again though, I'm not really bothered.

Whatever you do though Ver, please just lay off the other DC characters? They have a valid fanbase too.

Without Bale and Routh on board this movie will fail. The general movie going audience is already accustomed to them as Batman and Superman (especially Batman after the epic TDK). They won't accept anyone else in those roles for a Justice League movie while the current Batman and Superman franchises are still active.

    by the brains

That's what's putting a kibosh on this. If it can't be Bale right now then they're holding off until Nolan's done. They want the whole 'one universe' crossover idea (too). I would be completely surprised if they went ahead right now with Hammer and Cotrona as Batman and Superman. They trumpeted that "separate universe" idea early on but then they got quiet, held summits, meetings and fierce discussions and came out with a Marvel I mean DC "plan". A far-reaching, long-term, overhead didactic plan. We're talking about a totally outrageous paradigm.

Keep Batman in Gotham and Supes in Metropolis. Having them in the same movie is fucking stupid. That shit works in the comic books. It might even work in a cartoon show (I don't watch those particular programs) but I don't think it could ever work in a live action film. What the fuck is the point of having a league of heroes where one of them is fucking Superman? You know, the most indestructible superhero ever? The man of steel and all that shit? His only weakness is kryptonite, which he is fully aware of yet he still manages to find himself in a situation where kryptonite is used against him? What the fuck does the world need with Batman? He just polices one city. Superman is looking after the whole world. Did Superman need Batman to solve problems in the other Superman movies? Was Wonder Woman there?
    Fuck this shit.

All the current solo movies feature you casts. Make Justice League 10-20 years later w/ more mature, established heroes that have been around a while. Get someone Avery Brooks at John Stewart Green Lantern, Catherine Zeta Jones as Wonder Woman, someone older as an aging bitter Bruce Wayne and Jon Hamm as SUPERMAN! Throw in some young 20 something as Flash to give the studio someone to draw in the young'uns, and boom, instant JLA movie with distance from the stand alone movies

needs to have the same passion for the source material as say, Iron Man's Jon Favreau. He brought in the right actors, worked with Marvel Studios to approve the right story, got Stan Winston, ILM, understood the fans and general audiences, did Comic Con--everything. Marvel is on a roll now , with IM, Hulk and the Avengers movie pre-build-up. DC Comics needs to have some authority in the creative process. Especially plot, costumes and casting. Many used to say before Avengers announcement that DC has one shot to get it right- now with Avengers in the horizon, George Miller better get it right because his JLA will be compared to The Avengers

...with Wonder Woman. What...are they going to give her a BLACK outfit? I mean, he can't have a traditional blue & gray costume...so SHE will be allowed red, white, blue and gold? The Justice League has always been heavily contrived anyway since they always need to shoe-horn the various characters into a story that usually DOES NOT require most of them anyway. Superhero team comics (with the exception of WATCHMEN, which is just a one-shot stand alone story anyway) are the lowest form of superhero comics (which, admittedly, are pretty preposterous in their own right). But I'm looking forward to the Justice League movie just to see how the hell they ATTEMPT to make it work without being silly. Go George...good luck, bud.

and for this role Crowe > Bana

    by maniaq

I just don't think Bana could produce a convincingly... "mad" enough Max to do it justice. Sure he could bring the particular brand of quirky he gave to, say, Chopper - and to be fair that's not too far removed from Mel's "three stooges" variety of "mad" (see Hamlet) which he didn't even really need all that much for Thunderdome - but look at his turning points in the first two: he reaches a point of not so much "insane" madness as pure FURY.
I'm not sure I've ever seen Bana deliver that kind of fury before - maybe he can do it, maybe not - he'd have to do much better than he produced in, say, Hulk - or even Troy, where he got pretty mad...
No I think for this role, if you can't get Mel you need the guy that can throw a phone at thirty paces.
    You need Mad MAXIMUS!

    the funny thing is

    by vern

DC is the Batman team, right? If so, DC just made a movie that LITERALLY made more money than Star Wars. There is exactly 1 (one) movie in the entire history of cinema that has made more money than THE DARK KNIGHT. It has a serious shot at being the first (only?) comic book movie nominated for best picture. So then they turn around and announce that their plan now is to copy what the other team is doing.
I don't know man, I liked IRON MAN, INCREDIBLE HULK was okay (although I still like the Ang Lee one better), I will watch the other ones. But I think everybody's counting the eggs before they're hatched. I don't believe Edward Norton will play the Hulk in the Avengers (and not everybody will want him to). I'm not sure the different characters will make sense together. I feel certain that the Captain America one will not be any more memorable than Incredible Hulk since it's from the director of fucking JUMANJI. And we don't know who will be directing Avengers yet. And even if it's great and everyone loves it, are they gonna want to then see a copy of it with Superman?
But oh well, hopefully they'll all be good and everybody will be happy. Most important thing: let George Miller get some fuckin film rolling on SOMETHING. Also, Blade cameo in one of those fuckers. He should show up after the credits and cut everybody's heads off with a sword.

    by i_am_not_the_droid_you_are_looking_for

to this then don't have him in it. Have him referenced. As in when they are getting the team together someone should say that they should get the Batman from Gotham City, and Superman or whoever can say that no one knows where the fuck he is, and he's not a good guy anyway. In the Nolan universe, Batmans on the run. He's a vigilante and an enemy of Gotham. So, if they want to stay faithful to that then they can't just have him up and join a team of superheroes. That would make no sense.Batman never made sense to me in a team of aliens and amazon women anyway.

    Fookin ell Christian

    by the brains

In Miller's version (or the one they were going to shoot before the strike) Batman was the outsider of the group, there was distrust with him and the others because of him being different (ie. not superpowered). That was a key element of the story and set it in motion.

But if this Nolan thing is a problem, then why not do something like introduce the new Batman in Justice League a year after Nolan's third Batman movie. Nolan's Batman is wrapping up, whereas all the others like Superman and Wonder Woman and Flash etc. are just beginning. They're going to continue Batman after Nolan anyway. After Batman 3 Batman is going to change in some way without Nolan, it could explore other approaches and elements to Batman from the comics- like JLA (or Robin!). I think WB are being very close-minded with this MARVEL approach since Nolan's Batman wasn't conceived from the beginning as a template for a teamup film (unlike all the Marvel Avenger heroes). Nolan obviously didn't take that into account.

There is no way it won't be the greatest superhero ensemble flick ever made. How many non-comic readers are posting?

    by c a iversen

It seems like most you hate superhero team-ups, comics almost as much and are calling this unfilmable. Maybe posting on what you know would help.

LOTR was "unfilmable" too. Get real, these characters can co-exist in the same film. How can Spiderman and a man flying an unlikely looking glider dressed as a green goblin and a guy with tentacle arms all exist in the same universe with a man who has an alien symbiote take over his body and another guy who disolves into sand?

Wake up and use some logic.

As for the Superman "too powerful" argument, he may not be that killable, but he has been taken out of action before. Even a slightly mystical artifact can turn him into a mortal man (no magic resistance), and he can then be locked up. No kryptonite needed. If you did need to use kryptonite, you could put him in a cage with bars which have kryptonite centres.

There's so much you can do with imagination fellas. Realise it.
