Want a peek into the mind of Jodorowsky's KING SHOT?

Published at:  Dec 02, 2008 4:43:47 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... sigh... excuse me... tonight I'm working on my DVD column, after a post-coital glow from watching BENJAMIN BUTTONS and cooling down by writing to the action of 4 DIE HARD movies in the glow of my Christmas tree... when I get an Instant Message from Rav. Rav is one of these fanboy creatures that finds the most amazing things and forwards them on to me. This time - it was a simple YouTube link. I clicked to find a featurette on the production of Alejandro Jodorowsky's KING SHOT - a metaphysical spaghetti western gangster flick starring a whole shitload of cool folks and shot by the lens of master Vilmos Zsigmond! Excuse me... I have my second coital glow of the night... get your own by watching the following...

At least as much as I can be. Good to have crazy uncle Jodorowsky back in the shit again.

This one looks hopeful (as if there's any reason that it wouldn't). He says it will be commercial...POSSSIBLY. With young people....not with today's youth. I highly doubt a jodorowsky film can be commercially successful with today's youth, and I'm one of them (an exception to the rule...but you get what I mean.)

I'm currently knee-deep in his Incal comics, and it's some of the best sci-fi I've ever read. Illuminating, bawdy, dizzying, classical; if you want to branch out into European comics, you can't do much better.

Overhyped and overrated by geeks who will also be confounded by the fact that it is going to bomb. They already made the Matrix (twice, actually, if you count Tron), and i don't see how James "I Made Two Good Movies -- T1 and Aliens" Cameron can improve upon the idea in any way shape or form. Except, perhaps, with even more effects and special cameras. Perhaps something with an underwater theme?

That the Wachowski brothers should have stolen, I mean borrowed, some of the plot of El Topo for the Matrix sequels. It's good to have Jodorowsky back, even if he is fucking mental. It wouldn't have been a big surprise if Tarantino came on board as a producer (as well as Lynch) but I bet he's busy on Basterds.

Don't be naive! He's been talking about this movie for at least the past 5 years. So he has a script and some concept drawings? Great! Now good luck finding someone who wants to fund a movie as weird as this. And it doesn't look like it'd be a very cheap film to make either. Jodorowsky will die before he makes another film.

I loved the fact that Jodorowsky made sure to draw the distinction between "artistic" film and industrial films. I couldn't think of a more perfect classification for large spectacle than "industrial." Oversized, expensive, impersonal and belittling. Excellent.

By the way, this sounds and looks alright, but Jodorowsky has better ideas than he does completed films. Even his best work like Santa Sangre or El Topo are mixed bags, while something like The Holy Mountain or The Rainbow Thief are boring and messy.

    by seppukudkurosawa

This Janjetov guy can draw some of the most ugly and beautiful things I've ever seen in my life. If you like his art, I'd check out his work on the Incal prequels he worked on a few years before. Shit, after reading that, I'd have sued The Fifth Element if I were Jodorowsky... Oh wait, he did. The suit got thrown out of court, but I'd say Jodo had a point. TFE's like a different story set in the same Universe Jodo, Moebius and Janjetov created. I haven't read the Metabarons yet, but I've got them on order. Looks like I'm in for something quite special (as if I expected anything less from this man).

Anyway, glad to see such a high Fan-to-"Ugh, his movies are pretentious and unwatchable" ratio in this talkback! No one's forcing you to watch The Holy Mountain and write a 50 thousand word essay on it. Jodorowsky's there as an alternative for the people who might be into him. We NEED the crazy visionaries. The people who see the world from such a unique angle that they can't help but infect others with their individual perspective. Pseud? I've not got a single doubt in my mind that he believes in the stuff he says (example: he thinks that people don't write stories, they were planted in our minds already). And that's good enough for me.

Just kidding. It seems like it would be hard to be in between on Jodorowsky, either you're gonna love that shit or you're not gonna enjoy it at all. HOLY MOUNTAIN is one of my favorite movies ever, and I've been dying to see him try another movie.
It's kind of funny to see people saying they'll skip it because they don't like Asian Argento or whatever. Have you seen a Jodorowsky movie before? Do you think it really matters who's in the cast? Shit, it could be Martin Lawrence, he'd still probaly have him nursing a baby tiger from his nipples or some crazy shit like that. That said, I'm very excited to see Nick Nolte let loose for Jodorowsky. That just might be dangerous.
And I don't think "pretentious" applies to this guy. Do you think he gives a shit about pretense? He doesn't give a shit about anything. He made a movie about turning shit into gold. He wants to distribute this movie by going around projecting it on the sides of buildings. He doesn't need to impress anybody.

    by mullah omar

I figure someone is only pretentious if they go overboard trying to get everyone to acknowledge their genius. Jodo talks like a space case, and I can see why some people might confuse this with pretention, but I don't see him lobbying for recognition or playing to the critics.

The guy simply makes the movies he wants to make. Your opinion does not exist in Jodo's dojo.

Sorry for the late reply, but here you go. I'd recommend reading the prequels first like I did, but it's your call:

The Incal #1: Orphan of the City Shaft (Humanoids) (Prequel)
The Incal #2: John DiFool, Class "R" Detective (Humanoids) (Prequel)
The Incal: The Epic Conspiracy (Humanoids/DC)
The Incal: The Epic Journey (Humanoids/DC)

    For the Metabarons...

The Metabarons Vol.1: Othon and Honorata (Humanoids/DC)
The Metabarons Vol.2: Aghnar and Oda (Humanoids/DC)
The Metabarons Vol.3: Steelhand and Dona Vicenta (Humanoids/DC)

Also The Techopriests tie in, those are...

The Technopriests Book 1: Initiation (Humanoids/DC)
The Technopriests Book 2: Rebellion (Humanoids/DC)

    Hope you enjoy them!

    Big on symbols, impenetrable symbology

    by jazzdownunder

Jodorowsky movies have a habit of appearing in the Incredibly Strange 24 Hour Movie Marathon here in NZ (this years event takes place this coming weekend - WOOHOO!)

Whilst I can appreciate the "art" in Jodorowsky's movie making, they ultimately leave me cold. There's some great imagery and a feeling that there should be a meaning but if there is then it is utterly impenetrable.

I would probably enjoy Jodorowsky's work more if it weren't part of a 24 Hour marathon, in which setting his movies feel about 3 times longer than they already are.
