1st image of GAMBIT from the WOLVERINE movie hits... lower your expectations...
Hey folks, Harry here... I've never been the biggest Gambit fan, but I've always respected the character's immense fanbase. Sadly, I'm afraid fans of Gambit will be about as satisfied as VENOM fans were by SPIDER-MAN 3 when they see next summer's WOLVERINE. And I think that disappointment will begin when Gambit fans click on the below link - and then later when they realize that he has a very small part in things... but maybe that's good... if he's forgettable here... perhaps he can be done justice easier later on. Right? Maybe? I hope so too. Anyway, IESB has the goods - by way of EMPIRE...
Nice Shirt Remy!

-
it's better than Shia. although a young Keanu actually wouldn't be half bad...
-
Even though he's copping the whole Lemmy/Triple H bearded look, that's still one of the most unremarkable looking mahfuckas I've ever seen. Deadpool better be awesome.
-
but then i was never a big fan of gambit's look from the comics. did you ever really look at the costume he wore under that trenchcoat? it was pretty cheesy. i'd rather have a believable character than an exact replica from the comics.
-
Looks like a douchey Josh Hartnett. Which isn't surprising, since Hartnett is a bit of a douche. Disappointing. All I can hope is this isn't as bad as X3. All that matters.
-
that's an ugly dude! Remy should be strikingly handsome and suave. That dude looks like a caveman/rapist.
-
I thought they'd have someone a little more rugged looking. Someone who looks like they could hold their own. Not someone who looks like they might be able to scarf munchies while playing video games, but forget a bigger challenge.
-
I fucking hate him. He manages to play the same smart ass douche bag in nearly all of his movies, and he is NEVER funny.
-
Cause at this point anything'd be better. What the Hell is Abe Vigoda doing these days?
-
whatever.

If you're worried, check out what he can do on Friday Night Ligh
by divisionpost
I'm not one to talk as I don't follow X-Men that well, but comparing Gambit's Wikipedia page to Taylor Kitsch's character (Tim Riggins) on Friday Night Lights...I'll be shocked if he doesn't pull this off.
-
That is All.
-
He'd done it for a couple crack rocks and half bottle of xanax
When it looks like a slack lipped idiot, it doesn't matter which slack lipped idiot you use -
He might do well with what is a shitty character to begin with. He more or less plays a non mutant powered Gambit on FNL and does a real good job with what could have been a cliched one dimensional character.
-
while you're at it, why dont you link all the other new pics from the movie that SuperheroHype has up?

what the fuck does that image have to do with Gambit?
by dannyglovers_dickblood
Thats like taking a shot of Richard Dreyfuss standing on a fucking boat and saying, here it is folks-- the first shot of the live action Star Wars show.
-
Still doesn't mean I'll pay one fucking cent for this movie (fuck you FOX).
-
surely you meant Jaws...or were you referring to the hilarious SNL sketch where various actors audition for Star Wars?
either way, this does have to do with the movie, and more importantly, Gambit's crazy rabid fans. I could care less, but I already emailed it to my buddy who loves Gambit. they's out there! -
I sit through three of those damn X-men films, and the endless salivation over Fanke Janssen, Halle Berry, and Rebecca Romijn - give ONE DAMN ogle-worthy male! JUST ONE, DAMMIT!
-
I shouldn't have said boat, I should have said something more random-- like Dreyfuss trying on women's underwear or some shit. I'm saying this image has absolutely fucking nothing to do with the character. Why is it Gambit-- because he is holding a playing card? Stupid fucking image. This movie looks like shit. This kid can fuck off. And Hugh Jackman should still to tap dancing on pianos on Broadway.
-
Besides, we had enough of Wolverine in three X-Men movies.
-
Wolverine 1-3? God Wolvie 3 sucked, fuck Ratner!
-
I mean, it's a guy in a suit playing cards. Makes sense. Am I supposed to care that he's not wearing a brown trenchcoat and that weird pink-blue costume thing?
-
Plus the 100 other Mutants?
-
an ad from International Male.
-
...who plays Sawyer on "Lost." Just sayin'.
-
Yep, you can tell from that one image that the movies going to suck. Yessiree that tells everything about the movie. That random image tells the whole plot, pacing, atmosphere, acting, direction.... I got that all from a picture of a guy sitting at a table. I guess we should all drink some tainted Koo-Aid and be done with our lives cause that picture tells it all!!!!!!!!!!!
-
if done correctly...like here:
http://www.bathrobekimono.com/gam bit.html
-
This might not be a disaster afterall, he's really good on Friday Night Lights.
-
*might* have been asked to play Gambit for X3 (I admit my memory is fuzzy on this). Apparently he said "no". Said character was then dropped from the script (again).
-
Hey, Harry's the one who drew the connection, not I. Heh.
-
throwing exploding playing cards is kinda stupid, people like him because he's a "bad boy", but he really is just a douche with a bad accent.
-
Get Bryan Singer to do the Dark Phoenix finale he was obviously setting up (supposedly with a back to back X3/X4 being filmed). You know, where Dark Phoenix could destroy a sun if she wanted instead of residential houses and tourist attractions.
Use the Watcher from What If at the start, or even just don't bother explaining why this is happening (ie where the contradictions with X3: Last Stand would appear) and just do it, recast everyone who won't come back and if a halfway decent job is done, won't it make piles of money?
And have Sentinels. Lots of Sentinels and do them properly this time. -
What I meant was...
This movie will be bad.
But, as far as a Gambit image...it looks pretty good.
And, Gambit was a cool character. "WAS". When first introduced, he was a Han Solo type. Heroic when pressured, but not trustworthy on his own.
In this movie, he'll not even use his power. It'll be a shitty X-cameo that will leave all of us with blue balls.
Start from scratch, X-franchise.
Pull the trigger, or holster the piece.
Please and thank you. -
He's all glammed up. Throwing a card in slo-mo. Clooney and Pitt are across the table, right?
-
Poor bastards. They never stood a chance.
Squirrel Girl: The deadliest mutant with the lamest powers, name, & costume. Really. Check her in continuity ass kickings: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squirrel_girl
Just imagine how Dr. Doom or any of the other people she's kicked the shit out must have felt telling their friends.
"Squirrel Girl? Seriously? Pussy."
Throw Doop into the mix.... PWNED! =)
Pretty decent pic of Gambit. Consistent with the movieverse X-Men. I don't think that anybody with half a brain & half-realistic expectations would expect the lame blue and purple costume with all of that gigantic piping anyway.
I actually prefer the more realistic approach. It's consistent with what Marvel's doing with most of their movies anyway. -
Seriously, this doesn't matter at all...
-
I dont see anything to spaz out about here
-
I honestly don't see what's so disheartening about his look. He looks like a pretty close approximation of Remy.
I remain cautiously optimistic about this film. I just hope Rothman didn't stick his big, fat, talentless noise into this and meddle like he always does. We've all heard about those set reports from a few months ago. -
as he does in the comix, nothing new here, move along chere.
p.s. let bryan singer make x4 thanks
p.p.s. whoever mentioned upthread that squirrel girl is pure pwnage is right. doreen can and will kick your ass. -
Homo Erotica at its best!!! Sorry, not a movie for me!!!!
-
What the hell???
-
any of the X-men pics first it the web all those years back. What did you expect, him to be wearing that awful 90's outfit he wore in the comics and cartoon?
-
is it me, or have we already had the trailer for this, leaked at comicon with gambit footage in it.... and it felt a hell of a lot more like gambit than that image does. i dont give a shit what gambit looks like while playing cards, what matters is how he fights.
-
You win. That was the best post in ages.

I was all geared up for flames on his jacket or something.
It's a still from the movie, and what the hell is wrong with it? Anyone passing judgment on this is a frickin' idiot.
Sing it with me.

I'm proposing a boycott of sorts. Go to my forum post in the Zone and comment if you want.

Long story short, I will go ahead and watch Wolverine when it comes out, but I will will buy a ticket to a different movie. I don't want FOX getting another dime of my box office money as long as Rothman is still in charge. -

I thought Gambit had black eyes with red pupils...

This was already reported on several websites a few days ago. With Moriarty leaving and these 'late' news, the only attraction left on this site is the Talkback. I used to come here EVERY DAY, but now i prefer Joblo or any other sites for latest news.
-
The actor is pretty damn cool on FNL and thank god he's not wearing the stupid costume. He's got the right face for Gambit, and if any of you have seen the trailer for the movie then you'd quit whining about it. The movie looks ten billion times better than X3, Gambits little sequence in the trailer has the audience screaming with applause! He does the card throwing explosive trick and exhibits his quarter-staff skills! The guy looks great, no complaints from me at all!
-
What, is he playing against Le Chiffre or something?

That Sawyer dude from Lost would've been better

It shouldn't be "too" bad. It might even be good. But who knows? To hell with Tom Rothman though, lord knows how many movies he's messed up!
-
One image of Gambit who might not even be in costume and people whine. Give me a break. Just one freaking image of him at a table. No trenchcoat? Boohoo, who the fuck cares.

...and I don't mean in the smooth and sophisticated sense. I mean Suave in sense that he needs to shampoo his dirty head.

Who cares when AVATAR is fucking our eyeballs in 2009?

Long before it flaccidly tries to violate eyeballs.

I don't think that's a bad thing, so long as later on they can give these characters the respect they need.
-
Sick of AVATAR? You poor, deluded fool!
-
I think he'll be perfectly fine as Gambit in this movie but how much screen time is he really going to get?
On the plus side, he's great in Friday Night Lights... on the down side, he was in that really horrible movie, The Covenant. Fingers crossed. -
Anybody worrying about this movie needs to bear two things in mind. Hugh Jackman never blows, and the director Gavin Hood made an awesome movie called 'Tsotsi' which Moriarty had as his favourite movie of the year (2006 I think). Some other recently-released photos look good to me. Seems like a realistic setting. I think it's gonna be a surprise success.
-
It's like when holiday crap is everywhere way before Halloween. Spoils the novelty.

OLD!

Eddie Brock was a complete loser who got joined with a slobbering alien in order to pursue nonsensical vendettas and pointless plans. Venom was spot on in that movie!

That pissed me off. What a geek I am.

The shirt is pretty bad, but the guy wearing it is much worse. This is not a Gambit. This is more of a, I just graduated high school, look ma I can grow facial hair, pot-head. Not getting the womanizing bad ass vibe here at all. And I can tell you right now his accent with be worse than Storm's.
-
I was always under the impression that he was a homosexual.

only six or seven days later than everyone else. way to go with this 'breaking' image guys

Here's what we're looking for: "Movie PoopShoot.com"
This is a site full of militant movie buffs: sad bastards who live in their parents' basements, downloading scripts and trading what they believe to be inside info about movies and actors they despise yet can't stop discussing. This is where you go if you wanna hear frustrated would-be filmmakers mouth off with their two-bit, arm-chair-director's opinions on how they all could've made a better Episode One.
-
Oh yeah he looks sOOOoooo awful just like, Daniel Craig, Brandon Routh, Heath Ledger, just terrible! If it's THAT awful there is a very simple thing you can do. Don't see the movie. That way when it tanks at the box office the message will get through and they'll stop making them and ruining it for you. It works for other films and it'll work here. Trust me............ trust me.
-
Assuming the role hasn't been (re-) cast yet.
'nuff said. -
.....to think that this picture is enough to "lower your expectations". the guy has probably done a good job, and if you've seen Gavin Hood's work, he seems to be the type of director that can pull amazing performances out of even inexperienced actors. I actually have high expectations for this film. go rent "Totsi" by Hood today and see what I mean.
-

You know, if this film was made about 25 years earlier...
by anna valerious
...Christopher Lambert would've been a better choice. Too late for that now, eh?
-
maybe that you and AICN didn't get the first photo?
-
What's wrong with the pic? Sure, it's a nasty shirt but the pic shows NOTHING. Taylor Kitsch is fantastic in Friday Night Lights and was cast almost a year ago - not exactly a surprise that Gambit looks like Tim Riggins.
Ask yourself: What Would Riggins Do? -
I ain't lowering my expectations off that pic. What were u expecting Gambit to show up in his uniform?!?!? All it is is a cameo and Wolverine probably came across him in his street clothes playing some cards. He's worn stuff like that in the comics when he ain't kickin ass as an X-Man.
-
And a high-top fade to go along with it? Let's be real - just like Wolvie couldn't possible look good on film in yellow tights, Gambit too needs to be modified.
-
he has the general scummy look, just needs the red/black eyes and gloves. Now if he's touching stuff bare handed and it's not charging, it's definately GINO.
-
Harry would proclaim this photo as an example of Singer's singular vision and greatness and that we should all relax now that the master is in charge again. Look, I don't care who is directing this thing, but so long as it isn't Singer, there stands a good chance that we might actually see at least a fourth of the film's budget on screen.
-
Is silk = that is pretty gay.
-
In a more realistic kinda way. It makes the character more believable.
-
"TRANSFORMERS days"? Last year? Man, I KNOW you read this site during "sexy tomboy beanpole" days. How long ago does it have to be to be "Back in the Day?" Still, your point is valid and Squirrel Girl did indeed pwn Deadpool so hard he joined her team until they had to kick him out.Whatever happened to cries of "WOLVIE IN JAPAN!!!!" anyway?
-
X3 sucked. Not sure if I'll see this, but I don't really see anything in this picture to make me think this will suck. Looks a little like Gambit, just without the silly outfit.
-
Now, a Great Lakes Initiative movie would be fucking awesome. Throw in a Deadpool cameo. I'd be so fucking there.
While we're at it, a Nextwave movie. If I were ever to have a spare $300 million lying around, I would make a Nextwave movie with it. -
Sheesh, knock this crap off Hollywood, and at least try to make the actor look like the character into the comic.
-
It ain't that bad! Kinda goes with his style, he was always kinda flashy. We'll see how he acts and what he looks like when he's costumed up. I saw the bootleg trailer for the movie and it looks like he has some cool scenes.
-
And at the end of the Great Lakes Initiative movie, Samuel L. Jackson appears as Nick Fury and tells Squirrel Girl that he's putting together a team. And she says she's happy to stay with the GLI.
-
Just imagine how would he look like if he was in the comics costume...
For cryin out loud, just realise it already: WHAT WORKS IN COMICS VISUALLY, DOESN'T WORK IN MOVIES (At least not always) !!!
I mean just imagine if there was a ROM movie... The Toaster-Headed superhero??? -
... The only extra he needs is the trench-coat. From the trailer we saw, the cards and staff are already there. Let's just hope they will make him an interesting character.
-
... gay younger brother. New FOX marketing slogan: "If it sucks... It's a Rothman!"
-
AVATAR WON'T BE FUCKING ANY EYEBALLS...OK?
But you have been fucking up our patience for a looong time... Say something else please, will ya? -
Seriously!!!!!
Hey ZeeGloo don't worry dude Deadpool is a smart ass it's a match made in heaven -
When they cast over 6ft tall Jackman for X-Men and fans went nuts. They concentrated on him working in musicals and went to town. They complained about costuming. People went apeshit. Then the film came out and they went ... y'know he's a good Wolverine and the Costumes look better than yellow spandex etc etc. This film will probably be good, it might be crap either way we wont know till we see it. People need to f'n chill about this stuff.
-
Because even in 2008, going on 9, Gambit is still a lame, new-school, harbinger of the X-Books going to shit. You know that, right? All that said, I'm still somehow friggin' intrigued to see Schreiber's Sabretooth and what's his name, the evil looking bad guy from Lost, 3:10 To Yuma, and Smokin' Aces as The Blob.
-
I liked the whole Gambit/Rogue relationship. As a matter of fact ages ago, although it wouldn't work now, myself, and I'm sure others said we would love love love to see JCVD in his prime to Gambit.

In the Squirrel Girl Movie, Monkey Joe will pop in the Corner
by dogsoup
But since this is a movie and they'll have to change things around, Tippy Toe will coexist with Monkey Joe and have witty banter until the latter's death which fills Tippy-Toe and Squirrel Girl with the Revenge momentum they need to summon the million strong army of squirrels to take down Galactus- the old school guy with the funny hat that could step on Delaware and not the lameass swarm bullshit. In conclusion this is way more fun then speculating about one picture of a guy who, no matter how good or bad portrayed, will get exactly five minutes of screentime.
-
I don't usually like to nit-pick this stuff but honestly, it's like they're not even trying with this one.
-
got a link to the comicon footage?
-
So would you like to see Bishop, Jubilee, Cable, and numerous other 8-ton laser-cannon toting characters too?
-
Gambit...I'll wait to we have a clip and can see some character.
Heroes, what the hell are they doing? Sylar turns good, now he is bad, no let's just reset the entire story so the new writers can come in next year. I liked this show, and it is almost unbearable to watch now.
Seth Green, 'Heroes are meant to give average people (us) hope...' What the hell is that?
Brother told me to start watching Terminator again, going to give that a shot. Saying goodbye to Parkman and Hiro is going to suck. -
The accent, and how they do his card-effect - THAT is what will make/break his character. Clothing - eh - especially as a civvie. Looks like he might be a suave fellow, which fits my recollection of Remy.
-
as Bishop.
-
You know it's going to be shit with him in charge. Anyway, does anyone know if they are bringing Gambit back in the Ultimate X-Men comics?
-
Maybe we can get Seagall in his prime to play Mr.Sinister!
-
I dont know what people are expecting.. Tights, or that weird design on his chest from the comics.. Hopefully though he'll have the trench coat. But I dont really mind.. If he had a hawaii shirt or some topical t-shirt I'd be pissed.

Jesys mountainous molehills!Would look kind of Stoopid if he was wearing his costume!? Wolverine wears a white vest when he's doing his weekly shop!P>Dont get so negative im sure he wont be poncin round in a purple shirt the whole time!?
-
baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!
-
What's the big deal? It's a guy playing cards. Taylor Kitsch is a decent actor. On Friday Night Lights, the wildman he plays actually would've made him a good choice to play Wolverine if they wanted to go younger. I expect this kind of baseless hate from the talkbacks, not an AICN 'writer'.
-
Obviously I don't have high hopes for the Wolverine movie, but he's sitting down in an environment where he wouldn't be wearing his trenchcoat, and the guy's always had purple silly-looking stuff underneath it.
I don't quite get why people get worked up over Gambit anyway, he was never involved in any particularly good stories. He's pretty clearly designed to be as blatantly cool as a character can be without ever doing anything memorable--give your guy a trenchcoat and a pack of cards and you don't need to write anything interesting for him to do. -
Or, before you do at least go back and look at Gambit’s costume on the comics – it’s an even mixture of Neo from the matrix and gay pride parade. It would look ridiculous in a live action format. And, on an unrelated note, why does it always have to be aces, how come Gambit never throws the three of clubs? WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE THREE OF CLUBS?!?!? Gambit doesn’t concern me nearly as much as the terrible looking helicopter clip from the trailer.
-
I saw a guy on Time Warp who could do amazing things with cards...he doesn't look a thing like Gambit, but I wouldn't mind if he was the one playing the part! LOL
-
If he did he'd have spotted the huge huge spoilers throughout the feature such as the following...Victor Creed is Logan's half brother in the movie continuity and Wolverine is at least 150 years old. Gavin Hood says they have filmed a Civil War flashback as well as WW1, WW2 and Vietnam. Also, Scott Summers aka Cyclops and Emma Frost are among the youngsters Logan saves from Stryker's Weapon X labs. And it looks like Gambit does more than just play cards in the movie. He has a "fantastic" fight with Logan according to Hood. I'm a huge Wolverine fan and although I have my fair share of worries about the movie, the quotes by Schreiber, Jackman and Hood have given me hope. Schreiber in particular seems to know what makes Victor Creed tick. He says Victor always kicks Logan's ass. That's the nature of their relationship. Logan is the only one he can measure himself against". So when they do go against each - apparently after a bloody incident in Vietnam - their close century long bond becomes the bitterest of rivalries. Sounds good to me. And I've heard a certain Nathanial Essex - aka Mr Sinister - may make a cameo as a scientist at Weapon X who has an interest in Gambit. And finally the climax of the movie seems to be Logan vs Weapon 11 rather than Creed. Interesting...
And by the way Harry I think Gambit looks fine in the pic and this is a long time X-Men fan talking. Apparently he has his trenchcoat and staff in the movie anyway so showing this pic when he is playing cards is just a cheap shot by Harry. I've "lowered my expectations" of him... -
Dec 02, 2008 9:10:44 AM CST
So...his thing is a silk purple shirt and playing cards?...
by flickapoo
...tres cool.
-
Why exactly should I be lowering my expectations?
-
I can't imagine why Venom fans could complain about Spider-Man 3. He helped ruin the movie about as much as he helped ruin the comics. I thought he was portrayed pretty much exactly the same way in both.
-
Looking forward to this.
-

...so this guy mutated from a regular guy into Euro-Trash?...
by flickapoo
...I knew a guy that happened to. It was a long time ago. He was a design major, so I guess we should have seen it coming. Still a tough break though...
-
They are obviously using Origins as a template for Wolverine's past in the movie but with a few twists. For instance, Logan's half brother in Origins was Dog, but this character has obviously been combined with Victor Creed. There were a lot of similarities there anyway and it makes sense in a lot of ways. But they must be setting Logan's childhood further back in history too. I think Origins had Logan born around 1890, but if Gavin Hood has really filmed a Civil War sequence then Logan must have been born about 1840 or earlier. I think this is a good movie actually as I always thought the comic timeline struggled to fit in Logan's years training with Samurai in Japan. Now that can take place in the late 1800s when Samurai still existed. I'm just looking forward to seeing Schreiber in action as Victor Creed. He doesn't quite look the part, but if he can nail the characterisation and his relationship with Logan the movie could really work. I like him as an actor and everything I've seen of him as Creed so far, in the bootleg trailer etc, has worked.
-
I've never understood why that fucking character is as wildly popular as he is, and the fact that they shoehorned him into a Wolverine solo movie is proof that the movie will be kiddy and lame. Same goes for fucking Deadpool.
-
It's a picture of a guy in a shirt. If it had been from the set of anything by Peter Jackson or Guillermo del Toro, the AICN staff would be on their third circle jerk over the monitor already.
-

the Gambit love comes from the Fox cartoon.....
by dannyglovers_dickblood
....he is bad fucking ass in that show. I can give a fuck about the comics. That cartoon is the Bible.
-
Am I missing something? Dude's got the basic hair style & facial hair and he's throwing playing cards. There's no trenchcoat because understandably he's sitting at a table indoors. What else do you need from a still image of Gambit? Sure, Josh Holloway would have been the ideal casting choice but shit happens when you're left on an island that suddenly vanishes without a trace. Deal with it. Seriously, the people on this site need to buy a puppy or Prozac or something because nothing even satisfies you and you're perpetually miserable. A
Oh, and Gambit rocks! -
Only old ass X-Fans hate him. He's the most popular X-Man created in the last 20 years.
-
He was given the chance and he turned it down. TWICE! So move on.
-
were held at my local trailer park. This guy was by far the best of the bunch.
-
...doesn't mean a fail. There s a fair bit of negativity floating around about this movie as it is without assholes getting all pissy about 1 pic of a guy in a shirt. There are also numerous pictures of some guy with claws in a vest! ARGH!! Wheres the Yellow and Blue Spandex? Or even the Brown and Orange? Can we not hate the film till after it's release people.
-
Not awful by any means, but he has that whole... Toby Keith-like fat head thing going on, whereas I've always imagined Gambit on the leaner side. If they screw Deadpool up, then I'll be skeeved.
-
are really, really sad. Complaining about Venom, complaining about Gambit. It's really fucking sad. So, you didn't like a particular character and somehow they ruined the whole comic for you. Some of us didn't get into comics until the 90's and those are the characters we prefer. Has it ever occurred to any of you that we looked at the older issues and found them boring? Like with all the Venom hate. His pre-Venom villains are, for the most part, fucking lame. The Vulture? An old guy dressed up in a vulture costume? Are you kidding me? The Lizard? Mystero? Nice fishbowl on your head, dude. Give me Carnage and Venom any day over the old lame villains. Same with characters like Gambit, who I very much prefer to someone like Cyclops.
-
Calling all plants: situation orange!
-
Not all of us we're children of the 70's like your ancient fucking ass. I grew up in the 90's, read the Jim Lee/Chis Claremont/Scott Lobdell X-Men and was a fan of that and the 90's X-Men 'toon where Gambit was a total badass. I prefer Jubilee over Kitty Pryde. And Age of Apocalypse over Dark Phoenix sage. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
-
DAMN IT!
-
I think he's more interesting than many of Marvel's other mainstays.
-
...like with a highcollared trench coat (which would never look right on film) and yellow & blue spandex body suit. I think they were just playing it safe with this picture release.
-
....Gambits "power" isn't that he throws cards. He charges objects with kenetic energy so that they will explode on impact. He can throw anything...cards are just his thing...and I've seen a real-life motherfucker who could cut a carrot in half from 10 feet, so don't hate on his abilities!
-
Which has never been fully explained to this day was Harry's vendetta against X-men 3. He didnt just rubbish the movie when he saw it, he went out of his way to demolish the movie months before hand, IT was awful stuff to see a man use his website in such a corrosive manner. and to this day it remains a mystery. The day harry lost all credibilty was his mission impossible three review where he likened himself to tom cruise. There is only one x-men spin off I want and that is the Magneto movie. Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen are starring in Godot and beckett. next year. Tickets for that will be gold dust.

Sure...
As long as Harry can lower his empathy/financial backing by studios and directors.
Not to mention the fact that a film-maker that doesn't belong to Harry's Merry Society, is guaranteed to cause libellic "journalistic" bad reviews... -
As some have already pointed out, the pic isnt that bad, and knowing how truly amazing Taylor Kitsch is on FNL there really is nothing to worry about.
-
I never really thought Harry would be interested in this project anyway, but still there were those who may have thought differently.
-
I mean, anything with Gambit in it, you just know you might as well watch Roadhouse for the same experience.
-
I hate Gambit anyway and my expectations are lowered just by the fact that his crappy ass is even in this movie. Gambit has always been the poor man's Wolverine with the Cajun accent. He's lame and all this movie can do is improve his image in my eyes. So, even if he was wearing a clown suit with a bike horn, I could care less. The only two characters they absolutely need to get right are Wolverine and Sabretooth. I think we can all agree that Jackman is pretty spot on as Logan, so all we need to see now is Schreiber's Creed. And judging from the footage at Comic Con that leaked, he's nailed that too. It's not going to be The Dark Knight, but hopefully, we'll get something closer to X-Men 2 than X-Men 3.
-
I mean, I may not be into newer characters like X-23 or Vulcan or whatever, but they didn't ruin the comics. They're just a newer generation of characters. There will be kids ten years from now, talking about how those characters are what got them into comics.
I understand you prefer your Silver Age stuff, but to a lot of us, it's boring. It's from a time we can't relate to. Maybe it reminds you that you're old now or whatever, but seriously, get over it.
On that note, I will acknowledge, however, that the fucking Clone Saga completely fucked up Spider Man and it didn't recover for years. But that was less from any particular villains involved in it, than from the fact that they tried to make someone else Spiderman. That never works. Every comic tries it, but it never pans out. -
... he's a souped-up Ricky Jay.
-
And still think the old characters are lame. Do I know about Kraven and Electro and the Sinister Six and blah blah blah? Do I know about Madelyn Pyror and Kitty Pryde and the Brood and all that? Yeah. Just don't think those stories and characters are anything but silly. They have positive aspects to them, but I can't look at Thanos' big silly orange 70's boots and think that character is, at all, intimidating. Yet, I look at the shit from the Age of Apocalypse and I immediately think of him as the villain I would've liked to have seen a movie of the most (before, of course, I saw the awful X-Men 3. I think both new and old fans of the comics can agree that movie sucked).
-
NuCyclops is not only a pimp, but a paramilitary leader with a messiah complex who gives his black ops team orders to murder people on his death list, and who nailed his new blonde bimbo on his dead wife's grave. He kicked out Xavier from his own house (!) and keeps tabs on every x-men, in case they need to be taken down. In other words: he's awesome!
-
Talk about picking nits.

Of course they'll shy away from the costume whenever possible...
by norm3
Which sucks. I like when they are in battle they look the part.
-
They made him cool. Same with, say, the Sentry, who is a fucking nutjob now. Look at the old school Sentry. Lame. But, before Cyclops was pretty much a whiny boyscout.I like him a lot more now. Hell, Gambit was a villain for a long while, and last time I checked, Mr. Sinister had a sex change. I'm just talking about people complaining about progress. Do people honestly expect Spiderman to just fight the Lizard and Sandman (who was also fucking lame) forever? Shouldn't characters progress? Shouldn't new threats be created and if they're well-received carried on?
-
gotta agree with wuher and James Westfall, I don't think the dude from FNL was all that great a choice. I just don't see a teen-angst-football show star pulling off the gritty, arrogant underworld type. personally, I would've liked to see Adrian Grenier, the guy who plays Vince in Entourage, in the part. dude has the swag and the look. plus, not sold on Danny Huston or the chick from True Blood either.
-
I know my comics history so please don't try to school me. It's funny you say i need to mature, when you're the 40 yr old man still reading comics and living in his mom's basement no doubt.
-
Um, no, we can't agree that Jackman is spot-on as Logan. He never quite gets around to that scary-bad-ass Wolverine that we all know and love. The entire time, he's just like "Look at me, I have claws and an attitude." Whoopee. And don't even get me started on the lovesick puppy dog he turns into in X3.
I always liked Gambit better than Wolverine, anyways. I have a thing for underdogs, though ;)You know who I wanna see, even if just for a bit? Jubilee. When I was a kid, I frickin' worshiped her. I think it was just because I felt like I related to her a lot.
But anyways, yeah, I'm going to join the chorus... the picture is fine. Doesn't tell ya too much, so what's so bad about it? I'll withhold judgement until I see the trailer. I was planning on skipping this movie, but now that I see they'll be exploring other characters that I loved, I'll check it out. -
The picture's fine.
-
Jubilee had cameos in all 3 of the original Xmen movies. She didnt use her powers at all, except in a deleted scene on the X2 dvd.
-
Did you, obviously a comic book fan, just deride somebody you don't agree with for being...a comic book fan? Even going so far as to stereotype comic book fans as losers who live in their moms' basements? Where do you fit into the comic book fan paradigm?
-
There's nothing about this photo to cause any kind of emotion from me. It's just a photo of the actor throwing a card, big deal. The only thing to take from this is that we can expect him to use playing cards with his power at some point in the movie, not that we expected any differently anyway. Big deal. Why would anybody care one way or the other about this?
-
He's just relaxing over a game of cards of course he doesnt have his garb on. Besides if he's barely in this mkovie who gives a shite?
-
Should he be wearing that stupid Mardi GRas Neckpiece with his pink breastplate. Or maybe have that weird black not-mask around his head. Maybe huge blue steel boots. I think your overreacting on this one Harry. In the face, that's how gambit's drawn. The purple shirt is keeping with his flare, and I've seen normal people wearing much worse, Mr. Ginger Amish Beard! I see cards. Check. I see scruff. Check. I see a hustler at work. Big Check. Kitch had a Cajun coach on set. Check. In the COmic-Con trailer he had his trenchcoat, his staff and his cards. Check, check, check. Now I as again. What about this picture is anything but Gambit. Except maybe that there aren't hot chicks on his flanks. Time to give the pessimism a rest Harry. It's fun to read but when it's unfounded you come off as kind of a sod.

Has anyone Google Imaged the words 'Liev' and 'Sabertooth' ?
by biggusdickus
Is that it? Those are our Sabertooth and Gambit personas?
Bi-i-g 'Meh' from me. folks. Lazy, lazy, lazy. -
Yeah, didn't you know-- if you put mutton chops on anyone, they are automatically a Mutant. That is all that must be done. Its amazing!! Combine that with this douche-bag in the purple shirt.....GOOD LUCK FOLKS! I can't wait to hear the jokes about this one.
-
Gambit is one of the best characters from the 90's that mainstream audiences embraced. He could even be in the movie as Sinisters hench man, making sinister the big bad for the x-franchise?? The only problem I see is in the eyes...that needs to be right. Leave the trench coat out, as it will draw too many comparisons with the Matrix trilogy.
-
So he looks liek the dude fro m7th Heaven? Isn't that what he's supposed to look like?
-
If you didn't get the context, maybe you should sit this one out.

When you're on here vehemently defending a comic book character, how does anybody here know that you're not the same basement-dwelling loser you're describing? I mean, you're on here arguing about Gambit, too.

...not stepping in the cheese? Good luck.

Yeah, it's a picture of...a guy. What did anybody expect it to be? What magical still photo of Gambit could exist that would look better? It's a picture of a guy sitting in a chair. Judging from the brief slice of action we see from Gambit in the Comic-Con bootleg, he'll be pretty cool.
Besides, the actor, Taylor Kitsch, is terrific on Friday Night Lights. -
As an ancient late 30’s type, I don’t really have a lot of passion for Gambit either way – he was ok when he was introduced, but in some ways was representative of a character that didn’t have a ton of character development – part of this being the explosion (X-plosion?) of X-titles in the 90’s . But, for you young whipper-snappers who have the gall to say that some of the storylines these days can best the old school X-men, you’re high. The best X-men run ever was 108-141, the glorious Byrne/Claremont era – Proteus, Alpha Flight, the Hellfire Club - like it or not the Dark Phoenix saga is THE defining storyline in the history of the X-men. Some of the newer story lines have been ok, and some have been great (AOE was exceptional) but a lot of the recent events (House of M etc.) have been soulless. And one more point, us old-schoolers prefer having a Wolverine that appeared in 1-2 titles and maybe the occasional crossover – but somebody that could actually be injured or get knocked out – Wolverine these days is superhuman and way overexposed, which makes him boring. In closing, for you kids out there, I’d just like to stay, stop listening to rap music, stop driving so fast, and STAY OFF MY LAWN.
-
As much I I love Gambit, he was introduced in an era of style over substance, and the eyes were a big part of that, having no significance to him or his powers, it just looked cool. Gambit has been developed into a real character over the years, worthy of the classics, with a great pathos and tragic backstory. The big debate for the people who hate gambit are mostly people who don't give him a chance to grow. If you hate new teammate additions, then that whole stunt with Krakoa must have really pissed you old farts off, I mean, whose this Storm person, why is that German guy blue, and whose the retard with the claws? If you don't like Gambit because he isn't an original character than you must by proxy hate every single mutant that isn't Xavier, Cyclops, beast, Angel, Iceman, and Jean Grey.
-
Alpha Flight.
-
He's deadly with cards for real -- just put a Lapband on the motherfucker.
-
I was never a fan of Gambit because I saw him as "the next Wolverine"; a character with a mysterious past who lived on the edge of hero and anti-hero. I think for you kids just discovering comics in the 90's, Gambit was your Wolverine. But for those of us who had been reading comics for 10 or 20 years we didn't see a cool character but rather a marketing ploy. An attempt to create a character who could modeled after a very popular character and be spun off in limited series and one-shots. "Hey kids, his past is a mystery. To find out more, buy issue X and Series Y. We'll give you a piece of the puzzle, then when you think you have his whole story, we'll retcon it like we did with Wolverine".Of course of all those types of character created as a way to be "the new...", Gambit, Cable, Bishop were far better than the ones that came in the latter half of the 90's when Marvel was going through its financial woes. Wasn't there a mutant who joined the X-men who could control slugs? Whatever happened to that guy?
-
...Josh Brolin and Emile Hirsch had a fucked up flipper baby. But that's okay, we know how great a movie can still be when they get the basics wrong, right? Right?
-
From what i remember from the X-men cartoon from the 90's he was always trying to get into rogues pants with not much luck.
I doubt we'll be getting anything like that with this one. As it stands at the moment all i see is a guy in a purple shirt. -
Not the choice I would have made, but I guess I'm a traditionalist ;)
-
class A douche.
-
How can this movie not be worse than X3? Gambit looks shit, the rumours say the whole thing has been troubled, we've got Ryan Renolds as Deadpool which is surely going to suck and i doubt Jackman has got the same fire in him... i feel sorry for the guy! It's as though he's trapped playing Wolverine now because he knows his other movies aren't as successful. Still, could be worse. He could be stuck as Van Helsing. Imagine four of THOSE movies! I'd rather shoot myself in the face with a shotgun loaded with wasps.
-
he looks "attractive" and stuff I guess, he's just not wearing the ridiculous x-men outfit from the comics..
-
Are you saying that his shirt in this makes him MORE GAY than his original costume? I'm leaving it at that. I like Gambit btw, just being frank.

So, honestly I don't care what he looks like.
Wolverine, yes. Let's please have the beserker/pre-Uncle Wolvie. And Ryan Reynolds Deadpool.
As the powers that be mucked up Maverick/Agent Zero beyond belief.
-
Seriously to each their own. Gambit is by no means a bad character. He's no more lame the endless supply of mutants introduced in the years before (Doug Ramsey, Mimic, Thunderbird). There were plenty of lame ass characters introduced long before Gambit and his popularity confirms that. Is there anyone screaming to see Karma in an X-Men film. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it lame (except Vulture... he was/is fucking lame).
-
I'm not being rhetorical- just curious. I'm pretty indifferent to the guy since he always seems to play a secondary role to most X-Men stories.
-
i love gambit and to be honest this doesnt look too bad
-
WTF i wander if the director actualy read ANY X-man comics to see what the HELL gambit looks like
-
"Either you eventually learn enough about comics and their history to actually know what you're talking about OR you remain an ignorant little kid for the rest of your life". -- you realize the irony of that statement right?
-
The only thing they had going for him was the relationship with Rogue that was never as cool as the Magneto/Rogue Savage Land romance and them hinting that he was the third Summers brother which they basically blew for all that Vulcan crap. Gambit is to Wolverine what Jubilee is to Kitty Pride. A half assed toothless retread of an archetype that worked better with the original.
-
...I was never really up for this film. My idea of a stand-alone Wolverine movie begins and ends with Frank Miller. Silver samurai. Mariko. Viper. Now that would've been funky!I don't see why we coulnd't have had a fourth X-men film. Charles in a 'new' body, more for Colossus to do, Nightcrawler back, that Siryn/Banshee-girl-thing introduced. Maybe a tweaking of the Hellfire Club storylines - a sinister, seemingly respectable bunch of industrialists rather than the tiresome big mutant super-baddie. I dunno...it just seemed like there was loads of untapped possibilities there...I'll no doubt end up seeing Wolverine, but a Sabertooth that doesn't look like he ought to be in a Scandinavian doom-metal band simply isn't Sabertooth for me. You can keep Gambit either way - never liked the fucker. Oh well, it could be worse - they could've added Jubilee...Still, if we get any of that James Howlett/Rose/Dog bollocks, I'm putting the nachos down and walking out...

Enough knee-jerk reactionary negative bullshit. We're not all sheep, Harry, and some of us will actually wait to judge the film on its actual merits or lack thereof.
What was I supposed to do after seeing this photo, cry about my raped childhood 'cause he's not wearing his superhero outfit? Just can it, already. -
but why should I care? Tsotsi is a great movie, and Rendition was pretty good. Give the guy a break until you've seen the film. It's probably going to be better than the other (boring) ones.
-
As much as I wanted to hate him when I first started watching that show, he is actually not bad (at least in that role). Not sure what the movie's gonna be like, but he's not a bad choice. Josh Halloway might have been better though.
-
set in WW2 times? am i right on this one? in which case, the kid playing gambit now is fine. put JCVD in the next X-MEN movie as gambit.

see HARD TARGET. enough said. perfect for an older gambit

There are still people out there who LIKE this franchise
by industrykiller!
The X-Men movies are week films, right from the get go. Almost none of the characters are done justice, Wolverine chief among them. Jackman just doesn't have the edge or the right kind of charisma for the character. He plays cyclops more than he does Wolverine. And SIngers direction was always lifeless and the scripts bad, both look even more flaccid after The Dark Knight. Im not even gonna get into that hack Brett Ratner, who took something mediocre and made one of the worst comic films ever up there with SPider Man 3 and Batman and Robin. Its a fucking shame so many people just dont get these characters or the world in which they inhabit. I mean we have motherfuckers advocating X-Men 4 with Professor X in a different body? Have you no sense of taste?
-
I don't see what about this picture is so disappointing. As much as I love Gambit, I have to admit that under his trenchcoat, he had a pretty stupid looking costume. The purple shirt in this picture is probably an improvement.
-
Seriously the unadulterated hate is ridiculous. DOes that character represent something, I mean Im obviously younger than some of you guys so let me know if there was some sort of X-Men paradigm shift after Gambit. Ive read myself a shitload of x-men comics from all era and I can tell you with all certainty that that isnt the case. Maybe he's been poorly written, but I would say probably even less often than Wolverine, who is more comic relief today than soulful, bad ass, mad maxesque "ill turn up whenever you need me but I got my own thing" warrior. People like Gambit because he's cool. He's got a great power, look, and origin, and he's smooth yet flawed in an almost rag tag James Bondian way. That's more than you can say for 90% of X-Men that have come down the pipe and he's inarguably a better character than just about anyone who has been introduced to the team since. It's really all the qualities you need to write a good character so blame the writers if you dont like him. X-Men has been shit for years, including the ridiculously awful Joss Whedon run, so if you wanna slag something make it more recent than the early 90's, which looks like a golden age compared to what we have now.
-
Wolverine's already the bad boy, but Gambit is the sauve version. He's always the (wait for it...) the wild card. He's got the mysterious past and you never quite know what side he's on (kinda like Spike on Buffy). His relationship with Rogue was key, adding to his romantic aura. He is a first and foremost a thief and a lover, and only a hero 2nd. Anyway, I hope they use this movie as a setup for other possible spinoff threads, which could pay off in this XMen First Class thing - possibly bringing back Cyclops or introducing Emma Frost, introducing Mr. Sinister as a villain, and going more towards the evolutionary project aspect of X-Men, rather than the prejudice aspect. More Morrison and less Claremont.
-
...Bishop and so on and so forth. These were the kind of guys that Marvel always seemed to introduce with a bunch of limp bluster. They'd give them a fancy, explosive cover and say something cornball like, "MEET BISHOP! AND ONCE YOU DO, NOTHING WILL EVER BE THE SAME!!!"Come on. You know what I'm talking about!

Perhaps fanboy love over the all new Star Wars coming out or something. -
It is funny, we were having this debate over at the AICN Comics JSA talkback, and I pretty much think the older characters are much better then the new ones. Before all young whippersnappers start attacking me hear me out:
One of the reasons why the older characters work so well WAS the simplicity, not despite of it. I mean most of the early heroes work so well is because they were a normal person before they got their powers (Peter Parker was a nerdy student, Flash was a scientist, Hal Jordan was a pilot, Tony Stark was a rich inventor, etc.) so are ability to relate to them and empathize with them is much easier. Except for getting powers, Peter Parker or Barry Allen or Hal Jordan or even Ben Grimm is a lot like me, and has many of the same problems I do plus exciting problems I don’t (I don’t have an arch-enemy nor do I have to save the world). It is wish fulfillment, people living the life you wish you could be. Even Superman works here, with him born with the powers of a god but pretends to be a mild-mannered midwestern man. Take out the powers of a god and pretends part and you’ve got me.
Even characters that have always had powers or lived lives unlike ours have something about them that I can relate to, or our simplistic enough not to disrupt my suspension of disbelief. I mean, who doesn’t understand Batman’s simplistic drive for Justice, or wish that they could be considered “special” and “unique” like the X-Man. I mean, that is what makes the earliest X-Men so great, they were just normal kids who were born with special powers, a simple parable about being unique. Then it developed into a simple parallel about accepting those different and prejudice (race, ethnicity or sexual orientation, depending on the writer). So it was always best to have the X-Men be simple normal people from a varied background so anyone could relate to them and feel as if they understood what it was like to be “feared and hated.”
Then Wolverine was introduced and changed everything. I don’t hate Wolverine and actually used to love him, but unfortunately he started a bad trend: characters who exist completely and utterly in a superhero universe. I mean, there is nothing remotely “real” about Wolverine, or anyway we normal people can relate to him. He lives in a world that doesn’t really resemble ours. He isn’t a man who undergoes one origin to take him from normal man to hero, he has like 10 origins all together, anyone of them good enough for one hero. He is a mutant; an un-aging man who fought in a number of wars; someone who underwent a mysterious operation to turn him into a weapon; a formal feral child; and an ex-commando and spy. And that is all BEFORE he becomes Wolverine and joins the X-Men.
But Wolverine works because he is the member of a team were everyone else has a pretty much normal background (excluding the mutant part). Plus, Wolverine’s basic premise is that of a berserker mutant with a mysterious past who was experimented on by someone unknown. A different media depiction of Wolverine doesn’t have to use what everything that has been presented as part of his past, just the stuff that is essential.
However, the characters that imitated Wolverine’s convoluted origins don’t work as well in the long run. I mean Gambit is a Creole mutant thief and a member of the Thieves’ Guild that is warring against the Assassin’s Guild. Hard for a normal person to say, “Wow, he resembles me”. Same with Cable, Deadshot, Bishop, and pretty much all the other latter additions to X-Men; they all have back stories of being super-soldiers, commandoes, time travelers, and experts in a bunch of different weapons. AND they are also mutants. That is a far cry from the simple statement of a pilot who is given an alien weapon to fight evil with, or a young boy is bit by a radioactive spider and gains the proportionate strength, speed and agility of it.
I am not knocking these characters, just pointing out that to someone who encounters them for the first time they are harder to appreciate. The only characters are much more relatable and digestible for the early readers and are also easier to adapt to movies and other media. Plus, lets be honest, would any of us be a fan of a Wolverine or a Deadshot if we hadn’t first encountered a Batman or Spider-Man to help ease the transition to these types of characters.
SIDE NOTE: Someone brought up Cyclops, and how they like him now better. Well that might be the case, but he wouldn’t have reached this stage if hadn’t gone through his broody stage and his whiny stages. It is a character growth that makes him seem much more real. But it all started out because he first was just a young orphan who happened to be born with a mutant power, nothing more or nothing less.
-
Come on guys, I saw this on a wrestling website late last week....you were scooped by a site that features a guy posting pictures of celebs in bikini's and calls it news.
I love AICN, but could we be a little faster with stuff like this? -
grew up watching the '90s toon, and thought gambit was the coolest thing on that show not named apocalypse (apocalypse was simply bad ass).

Wait, who's Deadshot?

THEY ALREADY MADE 2 WOLVERINE MOVIES. Let's be honest, isn't this movie really Wolverine 4? At the least the 1st two X-Men movies were nothing more than "Wolverine and his Amazing Friends" and the third film was a noble failure that finally captured the scope of the X-Men universe and had awesome action sequences but was a bastardization when it came to the characters. Maybe if this fails Fox will cede X-Men back to Marvel so they can start over. Jackman is great but they can get somebody else if they start over.

But I also like older villains better
Because of three reasons: they seem to have better personalities, they have “plots” and they have a more rational, simpler explanation. I mean, one of the problems I had with the first X-Man movie is that all the villains, save for Magneto, where just blah henchmen. People who remember the original Brotherhood of Evil Mutants remember that they all had distinct personalities: Blob was a loud, obnoxious Texan; Mastermind was a manipulative sleaze bag; Toad was literally a toady – a kiss-ass and suck-up; Quicksilver was a hot-head who overreacted; and Scarlet Witch was a reluctant villainess who cared about others. Most modern villains, but not all, seem to be like the ones in the X-Men movie; merely there for their powers but having no goals or personality of their own.
Plus old villains used to plot. People might laugh at it now, but I always loved the dastardly schemes of Mysterio or the Penguin who were always trying to figure out a way to pull of a crime or defeat their opponent in style. What do Venom, Sabretooth and Doomsday do? They just want to beat the crap out of their archenemy and kill him. No working in the background, no clever manipulations, no trying to tire him out or trick him. It’s like watching a Bond movie where the villains goal is to meet Bond and just shoot him right there or be killed by him. Movie would only last 10 minutes.
Finally, the villains in the past had simpler origin, making it more “believable” to me. Scorpion just underwent an experiment to be given a variation of the same powers as Spider-Man; Mysterio was a special effects whiz you turned to crime; Captain Cold stole a freeze ray; Magneto was born a mutant. Then look at Venom, he is two separate origins: a reporter who hates Peter Parker and blames him for his life’s failure; and an alien symbiote who was rejected by Peter and came back for revenge. THEN they teamed up to form Venom. The problem with the Spider-Man movies is that they should have introduced Venom over the course of two movies: first movie introduce Brock and the symbiote, second movie have them merge to form Venom.

Expectations were low anyway..why should this lower them further
by scottindc
It's a bit unfair to pin negative comments on one pic that clearly doesn't represent anything more than a brief moment in a film. That'd be like showing The Joker's shabby clothing and saying 'The Dark Knight must suck because he doesn't look traditional". Give me a break...yes, this movie may well suck (X3 sure did) but this photo is a pretty freakin' weak reason to scoff.
-
Gambit's cool, but always worked best as a supporting character. Put him (or Wolverine) in the spotlight for too long drags them down.
Having him and Rogue "fall in love" was lame. When I was 13 I did not want to red a love story, I wanted to watch some Sentinels getting exploded. -
At least he's not wearing some super tight latex suit. I can just see him kickin everyone's ass. I'm just sittin here hummin "Ace Of Spades" to myself.
-
While you may hate Reynolds as Deadpool, it was mentioned in the comics by Deadpool that Reynolds would be the one he'd have play him in a movie. Can't remember the exact quote, it's been a while since I've read through my Deadpool collection, but maybe they thought they were doing a bit of fan service to the more hardcore readers with the pick of Reynolds?
Granted, his voice doesn't come close to the description of "gravel and gasoline" that Blind Al uses.
I do so loves me some Deadpool. He's basically the only comic book character I ever got into.

Twice, so could we please stop with all the "They should've of" BS. Ya'll realize that actors turn down roles, right?

I wouldn't play cards with a motherfucker wearing that shirt. Ever. His mutant power is to stand in club lines, hit on hot chicks as they walk past him and bob his head sideways to that "WHAT IS LOVE?" techno song. Money, baby.

...at nearly every other movie website? A little late, huh?

he said himself
-
and so will this garbage movie just like all the X-men flicks.
-
This one image says it all? Blame the promotions dept. for being a buncha fuckups.
-
What the fuck. Who gives a shit about a shirt. Is this what we base our opinions on now??? This makes about as much sense as judging a book based upon a description of the cover. Sure there is a possibility that this movie might suck, but preparing for the worst based upon a shirt in a picture is beyond dumb. Harry, you're better than that!

"People like Gambit because he's cool. He's got a great power, look, and origin, and he's smooth yet flawed in an almost rag tag James Bondian way." is definitely in the top ten most hilarious and retarded things I've read on AICN. Sublime, sir. My hat is off to you.
-
Whether you like Gambit and Deadshot or not, they will suck in this movie. The reason why being that the only reason they are being included is because the studios desire to do a spin off on them. They are pointless, unnecessary characters who are not needed to push the plot of this film.

…And just start from scratch. Keep what is essential and necessary for him to work and discard the rest. When Wolverine first appeared, I thought he was the bee’s knees. The berserk fury, the anti-social behavior, the loner forced to work in a team, the mysterious background and the lacking of a full name. Even one of the first “origin” stories I saw featuring him, from Alpha Flight #13 I believe, made him very interesting: found in the wilds of Canada as a feral man who had somehow been altered to have adamantium bones and claws, he was taken in by the Canadian government and trained as a special agent. Short, sweet, and simple.
BUT then they started adding details to his past, and each one was more and more extraordinary and outlandish then the last one: he fought in WWII, he was a Commando and spy after the war, he was trained as a Ninja, that he fought in WWI, that he can speak over a dozen languages, etc. I think the final straw for me was when he it was revealed he was born to a rich family in the 19th century, and that he had bone claws. Bone claws!? I guess the writers never saw John Byrne’s depiction of him being discovered by the Hudsons in Alpha Flight were it is stated that when he popped his claws on them it was the first time ever.
So my hope is that the writers pretty much discard all of the crap that has crept into the character and keep the good stuff. I’m sure many will disagree with me, but I truly hope they get rid of the idea that he fought in WWII. I doubt that will happen but I can hope.

you've certainly made a good case for the kinds of characters you prefer, and I have to say, I agree with you on that score. Those particular kinds of characters are more interesting. However, I think your classification of 'older' heroes and villains is a bit arbitrary. I don't think these classifications are dependent on how long ago they were created - though you may be pointing to a trend about 90s characters (Venom and the like) that were more about naked aggression and violence. These characters were working with specific themes that were only possible once the Comics Code was no longer running the show. But Wolverine dates back to the 70s. The thing about his character - that both Claremont and Whedon got - was that despite all his 'otherness' and his strange, mysterious origins, he's really just a guy who wants to be left alone with his beer. And who can't relate to that? An interesting side note. I was teaching a writing class once with 18 year olds. For some reason, a few of the female students happened to be X-Men fans. I asked them who their favorite character was. They said Wolverine, while the guys liked Gambit. In discussing it, we realized that the men thought Gambit was who the women would go for, while the women preferred the gruff guy who's honorable and romantic underneath all the aggression and awkward masculinity, not the 'suave' guy who's got all the lines. The typical story of women wanting to 'redeem' the bad boy. But Wolverine works more as a character when the writers give him something to fight for, whether it's a romantic interest, a young mutant that he's reluctantly mentoring, his honor, or some greater cause. I find that the writers that simply depict Wolvie as a killing machine miss the point of the character. Thus, the awful Wolverine Origins series (the current series, not the miniseries set in the 1800s). When I think of it, despite the fact that Jackman is much 'prettier' than most depictions of Logan in the comics, the movie Wolverine is actually a pretty decent depiction of the character. His relationship with Rogue pretty much made the first movie. And despite the suckage of X3, his role was still fairly consistent, if out of place. Anyway, I guess my point is that there's room for both kinds of characters that you mention, and there's still plenty of interesting characters out there that are 'newer' but still fit the 'old' model, just as there were plot-driven paper thin characters in 'older' comics.

Deadshot is a Batman villain.
-
And I had my expectations real low.
-
I don't know why I was saying Deadshot, I guess I am still recovering from this cold.
-
While I agree with what you wrote, it doesn’t really reflect my point. I guess I failed to explain it that well. I have nothing against modern characters, per say, but I was just pointing out that to many of them are now very convoluted and hard for non-comic people to relate to. Not all characters, but a good number of them. Sure people can relate to Wolverine when he is in a well-written story that just focuses on him, but have them look at his back-story and just watch them scratch their heads: How the hell does a 100+-year-old mutant who has fought in two wars, has been trained as a samurai AND transformed by a painful medical experiment but still acts like a regular Joe at a bar? It is incongruent.
Secondly, one of the reason characters nowadays are so “overdone” is because they are third generation characters in a superhero world, making them thrice removed from the normal world. By this I mean that the first heroes in the Golden Age and the Silver Age were only once removed from reality: a normal person who gains powers, or a powerful being who pretends he is normal. But his origin and background was rather simplistic.
Later on writers started acknowledging the history and continuity within the shared universe, so you had second generation heroes: characters who either took on the same identity as a past hero (Flash II, III or IV; Ant-Man II or III), who consciously bases his identity on a currently existing hero (Batgirl, Ms. Marvel), someone who gains powers from a currently existing hero (She-Hulk, Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr.), or has the same origin as another hero but a different identity or even powers (Doc Samson, Harpy and Abomination created by gamma rays; Man-Thing, Nomad and Nuke created by a variation of the Super-Soldier Formula; Black Goliath used the Pym Particle; the U-Foes hit by cosmic rays just like the FF). These characters can only exist after it has been acknowledge that the first character or object already exist (Wolverine was originally one of these since you had to first introduce mutants and adamantium before you could create him).
Then there is the third generation of heroes: characters who exist not because of one other character but because an entire shared comic book universe exist. These are the most meta-characters of all. The Young Avengers, the new Red Hood, Alexander Luthor, Superboy Prime, Venom, and a whole wing of the X-Men: Rachel Summers, Cable, Gambit and Bishop. Thanks to the fact they live in a comic book, almost anything is possible or feasible, hence it isn’t hard to imagine a Thieves’ Guild, or them having a mutant as a member. Or look at Cable, the probably the most meta character of them all: mutant son of Madelyne Prior and Scott Summers, taken into future, trained as a warrior, then sent back in time to fight against his clone, Stryfe (yeah, that makes sense).
As I said before, I have nothing against many of these characters. As a comic book fan I love it when writers use something from the past in a new and interesting way. My favorite characters of the 80s were guys like Hobgoblin, Beta Ray Thor, Goliath and Alpha Flight; characters who could only exist in a shared universe. However, it is hard to introduce them to a mainstream audience who is not as comic book savvy as we are and expect to accept them. It isn’t hard for a casual fan to suspend disbelief when a villain fights Iron Man in one of his former armors; it is completely different to expect them to suspend disbelief when you tell them that it is a villain fighting Spider-Man in his former costume, which is also an alien symbiote.
So if you are going to introduce a character like Gambit to the a film audience, you might very well consider eliminating some of the things from his background (like the Thieves’ Guild) and just have him be a mutant gambler, thief and ladies man.

That was uncalled for !

Stupid character....who cares. Fox is doing this...so who cares.
ZERO interest in Wolverine. -

...if this is cool or if it sucks. It's one photo. Maybe his eyes aren't red unless he uses his power... It's a movie version after all. I remember all the crap Spiderman got for his built in webbing and look how that turned out. Get a life if red eyes determine a movie's quality. Creative liberties are part of the system. We all know this. Don't we?

Gambit is cool and all, but has not business in this flick.I don't recall him in any of the origin stories for wolverine. Either do another Xmen flick or do a wolverine flick, don't shit these characters all over the place, just to get them on film. Get Marvel some Pedialyte! And Fast.
-
...coz Jackman said in an interview that they were going the "Batman Begins" route with it, dark superhero flick obviously a fantasy but its routes in reality. So it makes sense that the makers have not gone with traditional lookks/outfits from the comics but adapted them to make them look like "real life". Yes I know that makes no sense but you know what I mean. Have not made a judgement on this flick, the article in Empire was interesting but a lot of spoliers, not seen the trailer- when is that out people?
-
so it seems like it's not older characters as such (per se), but the actual reading of comics in the earlier ages (especially Silver) where things were straightforward and more simple. Years of overladen continuity is the problem for you then. It's such a strange phenomenon since the Marvel and DC universes are the longest running narratives in human history. I wonder what you think of Marvel's Ultimate Universe, since it was an attempt to pare down all that crazy continuity and get the characters back to their roots. This worked for a while, especially on Ultimate Spider-Man, but they eventually lost their way. This is why, as I said, it's all in the stories. This stupid Wolverine Origins series has decided to go back AGAIN and redo Wolverine's origins, make him an assassin and give him a psychotic son(!) (or even worse, an awful story on another title that tried to explain Wolverine and Sabretooth as related to all the other 'feral' characters through some primeval wolf tribe or some ridiculousness.) Terrible stories that make no sense, tell us nothing new about the character, and are just a waste of time. This is why if anyone wants to be a comics fan, they'll either have to put up with this or be selective in their continuity (which is what many writers are), ignoring the crap stories, and focusing on the stories that work or you like for canon.
-
I agree with you there that story is everything. And with so many bad stories, I think the best thing to do is practice a little voluntary amnesia.
I should have added in my above argument I was really trying to apply it to those characters that I think will work in a movie or other medium. I personally love the over-laden continuity of comic universes, but I don't expect a casual filmmaker to be able to grasp or make sense of someone like Rachel Summers, the unborn daughter from a alternate future timeline of a character who died before she ever gave birth to Rachel (and this wasn’t even really that character, but a cosmic entity who usurped her identity). I am sure he would get that character.
The true litmus test of what the audiences will accept will be the Watchmen movie. Forgoing that it might suck as a film, will audience accept a realist superhero movie about characters they have never heard about in an alternate timeline? I mean, I thin audience might be able to handle the superhero aspect, but through in the fact it takes place in 1984 where America won the Viet Nam war and Richard Nixon is still president, and the Cold War is about to turn hot? That is the answer I am waiting for. If they are, then maybe they’ll also accept a universes where giant green behemoths, Norse Thunder Gods, men in futuristic armor, and unfrozen WWII super-soldiers all exist together.

Gambit is so gay.
He is gay and sucks much ass. Gay, gay, gay, gay, gay.
A haiku by Micturating Benjamin. -
In Cooper's Secret Origin of the Superhero book, he claims that Watchmen's appeal is limited as literature because its enjoyment is entirely predicated on understanding the conventions of superhero comics. To that I say bullshit, because it's a fantastic story. In some ways, I would think it's more accessible because there's NOT huge baggage about these character's backstories. There's no continuity issues. It's all there, invented for the one text and self-contained. I'm just wondering if people are ready for a dark, R-rated tone for a superhero film. And yeah, Rachel Summers would be a movie nightmare. As would Cable, though there's a way you could do it as a spinoff into a scifi future universe with Apocalypse or such. Or they could have done it had they not screwed up the Jean Grey character (and her relationship to Scott) so bad in X3. I really, really hope they can find a way to bring back Cyclops and pair him with Emma Frost. He can be angsty about Jean's death, but move on and become the great leader and teacher he's meant to be, with the much more interesting and nuanced relationship with Emma. Anyhoo, with Cable, it would have worked possibly if there had been a tv series (hell, the storyline of Conner on Angel was pretty similar - baby stolen away to another world, returns as an ass-kicking adult, though it mixed in elements of Cable and Magik, Colossus' sister). But yeah, I'm dying to see if the Thor and Cap movies will be able to fold into an Avengers films. One's a war film, the other's an epic sword and sandals type movie. Avengers is going to be reaaaallly tricky.
-
looks fair enough from where I'm sitting...
If anything, I'm more concerned about the relative lack of buzz surrounding this film than the fact that they managed not to in some ridiculous paramilitary version of one of his costumes...
-
I can't think of another superhero I'd rather go have a beer with.
-
Logan is a cool character, but sitting in a bar having a beer with him would be like having a beer with Dirty Harry x10, Sounds good on paper but not in practice. Like Dirty Harry and Batman, Logan has such a rod stuck up his ass (this one being adamantium) it would make him unbearable to be around. The guy would crack jokes at your expense, give you that uncomfortable stare down every time you ribbed him, brood and radiate as much fun and warmth as Doctor Doom, and always be oozing violence like he is ready to bust your head open. There is a reason Wolverine has had problems with other members in every team he has been a member of - the guy does not have people skills.
-
remember about 10 years ago, ready wizard magazine and they had dream cast to play comic book characters. Everyone they ever picked was spot on. The hate/distain/off gives a shit for this choice says how badly Fox has fucked up this franchise. JCVD for Remy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
you have a beer very, very far away from him.
-
It works for presidential candidates, why not comic book characters? Ben Grimm is a good choice. I'd think John Constantine (at least Ennis' version) would be a good bloke to have a pint with, provided you're okay with paying. Any others?
-
Why the fuck is Deadpool even in this movie? I won't comment on Gambit as I know next to squat about him, but Deadpool didn't even exist until much later on. This film is already shitting continuity errors at its seams.
