SciFi Greenlights GALACTICA Prequel Series CAPRICA!!

Published at:  Dec 02, 2008 1:07:15 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

The “Battlestar Galactica” prequel series is a go!

The "Caprica" pilot, set 50 years before the events of "Battlestar Galactica," was shot a few months ago -- and word had it that SciFi was waiting to see how the first January episodes of "Galactica" did in the ratings before the channel would consider taking "Caprica" to series.

The series, which deals with the "invention" of the Cylons, is set to shoot next summer and air in 2010.

For those unfamiliar, a rundown the series' main characters (BEWARE SPOILERS):

* DANIEL GRAYSTONE (Eric Stoltz) is literally the father of the Cylons, a fortysomething “spectacularly wealthy” computer designer.

* ZOE GRAYSTONE (Alessandra Toreson), Daniel’s hot 16-year-old daughter, dies in a suicide bombing. Daniel learns that Zoe – like iconic “Twin Peaks” dead teenager Laura Palmer – had many secrets. For one thing she was a closeted monotheist! For another, she was even more of a technological genius than daddy Daniel, and succeeded in secretly uploading her personality and DNA into a holographic avatar. Daniel comes to combine the Zoe avatar with stolen technology to create the first Cylon, “a robotic version of his dead daughter.” Oo!

* JOSEPH ADAMS (Esai Morales), Bill Adama’s pop and Romo Lampkin’s future mentor, is a fortysomething Tauron native who long ago emigrated to Caprica and overcame anti-Tauron prejudice to become an influential defense attorney on the capital planet. Joseph’s wife and daughter (Bill’s mother and sister) die in the same blast that killed Zoe Graystone. Joseph Adams and Daniel Graystone, despite their very different backgrounds, are bonded by the tragedy. Adams, who still has “powerful ties to the Tauron crime underworld” helps Greystone create the first Cylon by stealing cutting-edge robotic technology from a Tauron computer developer.

* TAMARA ADAMS (Genevieve Buechner), Joseph’s dead daughter, may also be resurrected as a robot, but Joseph – much like the dad in Stephen King’s “Pet Sematary” – comes to regret his role in the Cylonic creations.

* AMANDA GRAYSTONE (Paula Malcomson), Daniel’s thirtysomething wife, is a successful surgeon devastated by the loss of her beloved daughter Zoe.

* TOMAS VERGIS (Roger R. Cross) is Amanda Graystone’s Tauron ex-lover and one of her husband’s chief competitors. Following Zoe’s death, Amanda covertly returns to Vergis’ bed to learn more of the tech that might be used to resurrect her daughter.

* SISTER CLARICE WILLOW (Polly Walker) is another closeted monotheist and the headmistress of the Athena Academy, the polytheistic religious school Zoe attended. A product of colonial slums, the sister is presumably responsible for converting young Zoe into a monotheist.

* BEN STARK (Avan Jogiais) is Zoe’s unbalanced monotheist-fanatic boyfriend, the suicide bomber who kills, among many others, Zoe, Tamara, Bill Adama’s mom and himself in a horrific train bombing. He, too, secretly uploaded himself into a holographic avatar. But his can only be contacted by headmistress Willow.

* WILLIAM ADAMS, a dour 9-year-old introvert unaware of his Tauron heritage, is Joseph Adams’ sole surviving child. Like John Connor, he will prove humanity’s savior in a universe ruled by murderous robots.

A promo for the pilot movie is online here.

New "Galactica" webisodes, co-scripted by Jane Espenson, launch a week from Friday.

"Galactica" Actual begins its last 10 episodes on the SciFi Channel Jan. 16.

The new Cylon-centric prequel TV-movie "Battlestar Galactica: The Plan," directed by Edward James Olmos from a teleplay by Espenson, is expected to air sometime after the mother series airs its series finale March 20.

    by unnatural

They are going to play four episodes a year, for 10 years, spreading out a intricate storyline over the course of the next decade.

So you have to buy the DVDs to keep track of anything going on, and each year it's like discovering a great show, then losing it in a month.

Sci-Fi are a bunch of morons when it comes to scheduling... they have been probably watching too many of their own monster movies.

    by kesoze4

Caprica's not set on Caprica, it's set on Earth and is about the original creation of the Final Five and the events that drove everyone from Earth to Caprica.

We all know that the new, colonial Cylons were invented as toasters, driven off, and came back as people.

Having this show be about Earth-based Cylons is the only way they can legitimately kick it off with humanoid robots.

With the Adamas kicking around way back then, though, this would of course mean Bill is the final cylon. Which if true, sucks -- was really hoping the Fifth would turn out to be self-aware.

It may play out as an intelligent sci-fi drama, but I already don't like the all-too-close proximity of the Adams/Adama family to the creation of the Cylons. It just seems like a lazy ploy meant to add significance to the events in BSG.

    by mr. nice gaius

No, they won't. Considering the nature of the production of BSG, I'm sure the writers/producers are thinking on a much more sophisticated level. Besides, George Lucas no longer understands what made STAR WARS cool in the first place. That's why the prequels are so flat and forgettable.

    by cobbio

Damn, I think this could be really good. It'll be less of an action show, more of an emotional, brain-twisting, big issue drama. If Moore and his writers keep it peppered with out-of-left-field turns, it could be a really cool examination of artificial intelligence and the rights AIs might fight for.
The movie "AI" was somewhat cool for the moral conundrums it posed, but I've always wanted a story that's WAY more hard-hitting. On Earth we're on the brink of giving birth to actual artifical intelligence, yet the braindead media never covers warnings, issues, broad-spectrum product integrations, or what these developments could mean for average folks.
I hope "Caprica" delves deep into uncharted waters and smacks us upside the head. Can't wait to see it.

"It's an intense family drama set on an Earthlike planet, in the near future".

In the near future? Is that a spoiler to the current BSG series? Isn't when the whole thing is taking place part of the big mystery?

Adams to Adama in 1 generation? needlessly rushed

    by murdermostfowl

Did the writers think this through?
What about the Toasters? You can go to perfect artificial humans then back to toasters and back to artificial humans in one generation?!?

What about all the old ships? There's hardly enough time for the "original" Galactica to become a museum piece if they don't even exist in this series.

This is explictly laid out in the BSG first 2 episodes... the toasters have been gone so long people have started to even forget about them.
perhaps Caprica is actually set 50 years before the 1st cylon war.. this would make a lot more sense.
