SciFi Greenlights GALACTICA Prequel Series CAPRICA!!
SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!
The “Battlestar Galactica” prequel series is a go!
The "Caprica" pilot, set 50 years before the events of "Battlestar Galactica," was shot a few months ago -- and word had it that SciFi was waiting to see how the first January episodes of "Galactica" did in the ratings before the channel would consider taking "Caprica" to series.
The series, which deals with the "invention" of the Cylons, is set to shoot next summer and air in 2010.
For those unfamiliar, a rundown the series' main characters (BEWARE SPOILERS):
* DANIEL GRAYSTONE (Eric Stoltz) is literally the father of the Cylons, a fortysomething “spectacularly wealthy” computer designer.
* ZOE GRAYSTONE (Alessandra Toreson), Daniel’s hot 16-year-old daughter, dies in a suicide bombing. Daniel learns that Zoe – like iconic “Twin Peaks” dead teenager Laura Palmer – had many secrets. For one thing she was a closeted monotheist! For another, she was even more of a technological genius than daddy Daniel, and succeeded in secretly uploading her personality and DNA into a holographic avatar. Daniel comes to combine the Zoe avatar with stolen technology to create the first Cylon, “a robotic version of his dead daughter.” Oo!
* JOSEPH ADAMS (Esai Morales), Bill Adama’s pop and Romo Lampkin’s future mentor, is a fortysomething Tauron native who long ago emigrated to Caprica and overcame anti-Tauron prejudice to become an influential defense attorney on the capital planet. Joseph’s wife and daughter (Bill’s mother and sister) die in the same blast that killed Zoe Graystone. Joseph Adams and Daniel Graystone, despite their very different backgrounds, are bonded by the tragedy. Adams, who still has “powerful ties to the Tauron crime underworld” helps Greystone create the first Cylon by stealing cutting-edge robotic technology from a Tauron computer developer.
* TAMARA ADAMS (Genevieve Buechner), Joseph’s dead daughter, may also be resurrected as a robot, but Joseph – much like the dad in Stephen King’s “Pet Sematary” – comes to regret his role in the Cylonic creations.
* AMANDA GRAYSTONE (Paula Malcomson), Daniel’s thirtysomething wife, is a successful surgeon devastated by the loss of her beloved daughter Zoe.
* TOMAS VERGIS (Roger R. Cross) is Amanda Graystone’s Tauron ex-lover and one of her husband’s chief competitors. Following Zoe’s death, Amanda covertly returns to Vergis’ bed to learn more of the tech that might be used to resurrect her daughter.
* SISTER CLARICE WILLOW (Polly Walker) is another closeted monotheist and the headmistress of the Athena Academy, the polytheistic religious school Zoe attended. A product of colonial slums, the sister is presumably responsible for converting young Zoe into a monotheist.
* BEN STARK (Avan Jogiais) is Zoe’s unbalanced monotheist-fanatic boyfriend, the suicide bomber who kills, among many others, Zoe, Tamara, Bill Adama’s mom and himself in a horrific train bombing. He, too, secretly uploaded himself into a holographic avatar. But his can only be contacted by headmistress Willow.
* WILLIAM ADAMS, a dour 9-year-old introvert unaware of his Tauron heritage, is Joseph Adams’ sole surviving child. Like John Connor, he will prove humanity’s savior in a universe ruled by murderous robots.
A promo for the pilot movie is online here.
New "Galactica" webisodes, co-scripted by Jane Espenson, launch a week from Friday.
"Galactica" Actual begins its last 10 episodes on the SciFi Channel Jan. 16.
The new Cylon-centric prequel TV-movie "Battlestar Galactica: The Plan," directed by Edward James Olmos from a teleplay by Espenson, is expected to air sometime after the mother series airs its series finale March 20.

HAHA!!

Good news! The way it all fits together! Glad to see we'll get to see even more of the complete picture! Frakkin Frak!
-
Have not seen or heard anything about it....
-
Didn't I see a trailer for this? What in god's name did I see? Can't they just finish the "main" series? Or will they do one episode a year for the next 10 years to drag it out a bit longer. Gah!!!
-
How about SciFi just properly produce and promote the shows it has that has fans. There is absolutely no reason for BSG to be ending. SciFi has been so sloppy and inept at the way this show has been promoted and scheduled that they don't deserve anymore quality shows EVER!!!
-
Hopefully Caprica is as good as BSG. Then if Stargate Universe is any good we may start to see a bit of a sci-fi revival on TV.
-
Dexter gets zero love here. If this is real, next season should be exponentially better.
http://darkpassenger.com/?p=46 -
Who doesn't love Dexter?
Easily one of the best shows on TV. -
They are going to play four episodes a year, for 10 years, spreading out a intricate storyline over the course of the next decade.
So you have to buy the DVDs to keep track of anything going on, and each year it's like discovering a great show, then losing it in a month.
Sci-Fi are a bunch of morons when it comes to scheduling... they have been probably watching too many of their own monster movies. -
That.Would.Be.Stunning!
-
prequils suck
-
I mean, they wouldn't. They couldn't. Please... please, say it ain't so.
-
middlequils suck too

Thank the Lords of Kobol! Not to mention the Cylon God.
by paul t. ryan
So Herc, any idea how many episodes in the first season?
-
I would go with the Godfather II and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.
-
Ahmed Best!
-
The Hobbit
I know it's not out yet, but this may break the prequel curse. -
It's that and sooooo much more.
-
...are all these "Adams" people?
-
So, Bill Adama had two dads (not that there's anything wrong with that)?
That cast list really sounds like crap. -
...another show for the Sci-Fi airwaves that will three times as long in the pipeline as it takes to run a season's worth of episodes.
The first five eps will air in something like June of '09; then they'll air the next five in December of 2010. The first half of the second season will air about 21 months after that.
Screw Sci-Fi Channel. -
Yeah, I am hanging in there for the Galactica finale, but I am out after that.
I give this show 13 episodes and then canceled. -
...of the new BSG.
1980 anyone? -
...works the corn fields of Caprica. Everyone lovingly refers to him as "little husker".
-
Damn, I spit out my water. Nice one MisterE. Nice. I applaud you.
-
If they were going to bring it to series anyway, why not? I've looked at the December lineup, and it's pathetic unless you are a fan of that POS fake-ality show Ghost Hunters.
-
Did they explain the name change somewhere when I wasn't looking?
-
Just watched the promo trailer... they hint at the name deal in the last 10 seconds.
-
I'm sure I'm not the only one. They lost me as a viewer some time ago.
But stuff like this really makes me appreciate the days when JMS used to say about Babylon 5 "We're a tv show, not a franchise."
You know, before he got all ... franchise-y about it. -
It's an unwatchable channel.
-
Will this 16 year old girl be the final cylon? Or the Clyon god? And surely we'll see them making a Sol Tigh Cylon or something? I'm really confused. I think I need to watch them all again.
-
The final episode of BSG is my last Sci-Fi viewing. Why start watching a show on Sci-Fi when it's going to take five years to watch 2-3 seasons? Fuck it.
-
Caprica's not set on Caprica, it's set on Earth and is about the original creation of the Final Five and the events that drove everyone from Earth to Caprica.
We all know that the new, colonial Cylons were invented as toasters, driven off, and came back as people.
Having this show be about Earth-based Cylons is the only way they can legitimately kick it off with humanoid robots.
With the Adamas kicking around way back then, though, this would of course mean Bill is the final cylon. Which if true, sucks -- was really hoping the Fifth would turn out to be self-aware. -
PASS
-
I couldn't give less of a shit. Literally.
In related news, it'd be fucking nice to actually get to see the end of GALACTICA. Does the SFC plan to actually let its fans - you know, the ones who got this series to its BIGGEST SHOW EVER ON SCI-FI CHANNEL status - see the ending? Fuck, I'm aging here... -
They sure did. They sure did.
-
Sci-Fi Channel, turn in your license to produce and present television.
-
the footage i saw of the pilot didn't knock me out. even just the visual concept of the show. i think they would have benefitted by making it more consistent in its look to BSG.
-
i think maybe a series AFTER the events of BSG would be more fun...
-
It may play out as an intelligent sci-fi drama, but I already don't like the all-too-close proximity of the Adams/Adama family to the creation of the Cylons. It just seems like a lazy ploy meant to add significance to the events in BSG.

RE: "I doubt they'll go all George Lucas on the BSG prequel"
by mr. nice gaius
No, they won't. Considering the nature of the production of BSG, I'm sure the writers/producers are thinking on a much more sophisticated level. Besides, George Lucas no longer understands what made STAR WARS cool in the first place. That's why the prequels are so flat and forgettable.
-
I hope that is a spelling mistake and not something else.
-
And why all the anger at the delay anyway? I doubt the ending is going to be 'and they all lived happily ever after', in fact I doubt there'll be much closure at all (at least Lucas gave us that in Episode 3), so what's the hurry?
-
Very creepy, haunting. Information aboce is very spoilery but the best part of this show is the tone, and the details of the world.
-
The relationship between the Adams and the cylons is made very plausible.
-
Supernatural season 3 is NOT $18... it's $38. Grrrrrr.
-
Well, I hope so; I'm definitely going to give the show a chance.Have you had a chance to view any of BSG's final 10 eps? Or have TPTB been keeping them under wraps?
-
going to undermine and diminish the reimagined mythos
Having cylons be uploaded humans that get laser guided amnesia is lame.
Much prefer the self evolving AI plot -
Um well I um... Yeah well, I can't really say. It's not like I had to sign something or anything.
-
It does not undermine the mythos at all. (At least the pilot doesn't)
-
where they reveal that Zoe was in on the suicide bombing? (or possibly she herself was the suicide bomber) Still can't wait
-
CAPRICA, CAPRICA, CAPRICA!!!
-
The Byrne reboot of Superman / Krypton
The anti-clone rebels (black zero?) escalating their attacks until it becomes a full scale planet wide civil war.
Culminating in an attempt to destroy the planet, which while stopped, did start a chain reaction that did destroy the planet thousands of years later.
It just have a familiar feel, the Black Zero intersected the main families after a fatal accident that required using cloned body parts to preserve life's.
Black Zero started as tweens rebeling and grew.
Just has a familiar feel... -
This is up there with the CWs young Dick Grayson. Either way, I learned my lesson with Galatica and I won't even bother with the Caprica pilot. It sounds like it'll be everything that went wrong with BSG and none of the good stuff. If I want touch feely crap, I'll go to the CW.
-
Not touchy feely, touchy creepy. It's really solid stuff. Promise.
-
All hail Atia of the Julii! I hope she's a major role, because she's freakin' incredible. And gorgeous. Of course if she's a nun, she'll probably be covered up. Unless they have cleavage friendly nun outfits.
-
and only people who can spell the word prequel are allowed to disagree.
-
...won't watch this. Bring back Firefly!
-
Jar Jar Binks is the 5th Cylon.
-
what a bunch of CRAP!
a SUICIDE bomber who's secretly uploaded himself into a holographic avatar?
GIVE ME A BREAK! -
Damn, I think this could be really good. It'll be less of an action show, more of an emotional, brain-twisting, big issue drama. If Moore and his writers keep it peppered with out-of-left-field turns, it could be a really cool examination of artificial intelligence and the rights AIs might fight for.
The movie "AI" was somewhat cool for the moral conundrums it posed, but I've always wanted a story that's WAY more hard-hitting. On Earth we're on the brink of giving birth to actual artifical intelligence, yet the braindead media never covers warnings, issues, broad-spectrum product integrations, or what these developments could mean for average folks.
I hope "Caprica" delves deep into uncharted waters and smacks us upside the head. Can't wait to see it. -
I'm willing to check it out. I still think (opinion, remember) that BSG is the best Sci-fi show out there on TV (though I don't really watch it on network TV out in these parts). At least until SW:live action TV show comes out. How 'bout some news on that, AICN??? huh? ANYTHING!!! I'm dying here.
-
unwatchably stoooooooopid
-
......Pugsley.
-
that sounds really terrible, and worse yet, boring.
-
Really, frankenfickle? What exactly about it sounds terrible and boring? The fact you can't write beyond half-sentences leads me to think you don't really know, and that you're just flippantly reacting.
And to me, that's half-assed.
What, exactly, sounds boring?
-
Enough with the whining, haters.
-
Dec 02, 2008 11:03:00 PM CST
I'm actually stupid enough to think that read "GATTACA prequel".
by ravetin
But, while I'm at it, the only good prequels ever are Metal Gear Solid 3 and Shadow of the Colossus.
-
Didn't know that was a prequel. Always thought about renting it but never really cared for it.
-
"It's an intense family drama set on an Earthlike planet, in the near future".
In the near future? Is that a spoiler to the current BSG series? Isn't when the whole thing is taking place part of the big mystery? -
Did the writers think this through?
What about the Toasters? You can go to perfect artificial humans then back to toasters and back to artificial humans in one generation?!?
What about all the old ships? There's hardly enough time for the "original" Galactica to become a museum piece if they don't even exist in this series.
This is explictly laid out in the BSG first 2 episodes... the toasters have been gone so long people have started to even forget about them.
perhaps Caprica is actually set 50 years before the 1st cylon war.. this would make a lot more sense.
