ScoreKeeper Tells You About The Two Disc Release Of THE DARK KNIGHT Score!!
Merrick here...
Greetings! ScoreKeeper here with yet another post regarding the insanely popular score to THE DARK KNIGHT (2008) composed by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard.
Next week, on December 9th, Warner Brothers Records will be releasing a two-disc, special edition complete score album from THE DARK KNIGHT [available HERE]. Even amongst my relative apathy for this particular score, I do find this news to be extremely welcome and substantial.

As an ardent film score aficionado and student of the craft, I love my soundtracks complete or at the very least, nearly complete. I want all of it. Every cue. Every note. Everything. It’s not a practice that is commonplace especially among new releases, so when a mainstream label like Warner Brothers Records decides to release one of their best selling scores as a complete special edition, I wholeheartedly welcome the decision and will do my part to support it.
Here is the track listing for the complete two-disc set sporting an additional fifty minutes of unreleased music and also includes an 8x8 forty page hardbound book:
Disc One
1. Why So Serious?
2. I'm Not A Hero
3. Harvey Two-Face
4. Aggressive Expansion
5. Always A Catch
6. Blood On My Hands
7. A Little Push
8. Like A Dog Chasing Cars
9. I Am The Batman
10. And I Thought My Jokes Were Bad
11. Agent Of Chaos
12. Introduce A Little Anarchy
13. Watch The World Burn
14. A Dark Knight
Disc Two
1. Bank Robbery (Prologue)
2. Buyer Beware
3. Halfway To Hong Kong
4. Decent Men In An Indecent Time
5. You're Gonna Love Me
6. Chance
7. You Complete Me
8. The Ferries
9. We Are Tonight's Entertainment
10. A Watchful Guardian
11. Why So Serious?(The Crystal Method Remix)
12. Poor Choice Of Words(Paul van Dyk Remix)
13. Gunpowder And Gasoline(Remix by Mel Wesson)
14. Rory's First Kiss(Remix by Ryeland Allison)
I would truly love to see more labels release score editions like this which are as complete as possible. Thank you Warner Brothers Records for this one. I’ll definitely be picking it up.

I just pirated the OST. Now I'll have to do it again?

I just watched the Dark Knight on DVD, prepared to be disappoint
by magic rat
no extras at all on the copy I watched. Just the movie, a scene selection, and languages.
-
They always leave off the good stuff...
-
i work a second job at blockbuster. this is the DVD everyone who rents it is going to see. There's nothing but the movie on it.
-
they actually put all the tracks in proper order, instead of just re-releasing the original disc then adding the extra tracks on the 2nd disc. I would rather have the choice of just buying a Score vol.2, I mean really, $45.
-
Too bad it was disqualified. Maybe Howard and Zimmer will have another chance if there's a Batman 3.
-
I'm sure there will be a version of the dvd that will have extras. In fact, I just saw clips of the extras online somewhere recently. Worst case scenario, you'll have to dish out a few more bucks for a special edition.
-
i think if you want the extras you have to buy it. you can't rent it.
-
there's a single disc version (no extras) and a 2-disc version (some extras), any geek worth their salt would have known this months ago when they went up for pre-order.
-
Elfman rapes The poser composer Zimmer.
-
You Complete Me?
Buyer beware indeed. -
but as standalone music, it sucks major balls, most of it is nearly unlistenable schizophrenic ambient noises.
-
or infamous...
This is not like those beautiful Star Wars Special Edition 2-CD soundtracks where everyone loves the music as much as the films. This is for The Dark Knight - where everyone loved the movie despite having heard alot of the music before (if not exactly then just rearranged).
Also when did it become commonplace to say you "support" things like this. As if you're giving to a charity. It's business people. Buying this won't mean they'll release complete soundtracks of your favorite films. That only happens on a case by case basis (eg. the 2-CD Phantom Menace soundtrack was popular, but Episode 2 & 3 didn't get one produced). -
I just saw Elfman shitting his pants at the greatness of this score.
-
You mean, like in a SEQUEL? They added a ton of new stuff as well.
-
That's kinda the whole point of a soundtrack... to support the movie. It's a soundtrack you *feel*, but not really one you listen to.

Fuck this skittering, tuneless violin shrieking...
by nasty in the pasty
...the REAL Batman music to get is the new 2-CD release of Shirley Walker's Batman: The Animated Series from LaLaLand Records that's available for pre-order starting tomorrow. Wow, THEMES!!!
-
That just adds to the re-used sound of this score. Other than the fascinating Joker Theme (which I like even if some people don't call it music), alot (notice I don't say all - I know there's still alot of original cues) of the other cues could quite easily blend into a bunch of other Zimmer and Newton Howard scores.
The Dark Knight score is not to Batman Begins what Empire Strikes Back is to Star Wars, and I feel a special 2-CD release won't really serve to give the purchaser alot of new stuff to listen to. It's a gimmick release (like the 2-CD Phantom Menace soundtrack). -

I was pleasantly surprised by how much of the main cues were on
by playkins
I was pleasantly surprised by how much of the main cues were on the original CD. BATMAN BEGINS however, needs the two-disc love. There were all kinds of cues not on that CD, and it makes me angry every time I listen to it.
-
Like the LOTR special releases.
But DK score is great. -
Not sure about best film, though it does seem a good chance. But best director, he must have in the bag.
-
i work at a video shop too and its standard practice for us to get the single disc for rent. its just far more cost effective. most people who rent the film arent fussed by the supplementary material and furthermore, the $$$ saved by the company buying the single disc versions is the underlying factor. yeah its a couple bucks, but if youre buying for heaps of shops the $4 or whatever dollars across 50+ copies (minimum, we're getting close to 80) make it a no brainer.

An OFFICIAL CD for BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES is coming!!!
by admonisher
THE DARK KNIGHT isn't the only Batman soundtrack getting deluxe treatment this month! After more than 15 years of waiting, BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES is finally getting an official soundtrack release!!! Check out La La Land Records' website at Noon (PT) on 12/2. It's a limited edition 2CD set (hopefully the first of many) and features numerous episode scores from the late Shirley Walker and her team. I can't emphasize the significance of this release enough ... anyone familiar with this series knows just how stunningly brilliant the music is. So while THE DARK KNIGHT 2CD set is commendable in its way, if you only have the money to shell out for just one ... go with BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES! It's bloody amazing. If it succeeds we might see further volumes, in addition to sets for SUPERMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES and JUSTICE LEAGUE. And no, I'm in no way involved with La La Land Records ... I'm just a huge Shirley Walker/B:TAS fan who thinks Bat-geeks and soundtrack fans everywhere will be interested in this news.
-
It's a great score for a great movie.
-
The remixes used are rubbish. And whose idea was it to use the awful Paul Van Dyk trance guff?! Horrible. The only remixes on there should have been the stuff done by Fratboy Roberts who keeps his stuff cinematic.

Damn You Michael Bay

FUCKING AMAZING!!!
-
Is true to an extent. The Phantom Menace 2 CD set didn't meet sales expectations, and the huge fandom backlash at Sony for using the actual edited film tracks, instead of whatever was composed before the reediting, caused Sony to rethink anymore ultimate editions, for now at least. The lower than projected sales and bad word of mouth put further editions on hold. However, if the Indiana Jones box set - which itself is far from complete and already getting bad notices due to it's lack of completeness - sells well enough, Lucasfilm may revisit the prequel scores down the road.
-
It will happen...Williams 6-psrt masterpiece (that gets better in the second half...which he recorded first) will come out on cd...it is unavoidable. Whenever that "ultimate" box set of the movies comes out, the score will come out as well, hopefully with every piece of recorded music for Star Wars.
-
List is almost sixty dollars. THEY CAN KISS MY ASS. I would buy this if it were normally priced.
-
It's 2 friggin' discs and maybe a booklet with production shots we've seen countless times before? Why the bug-fuck insane price tag?
-
FUCK YEA!
I'll be the first album I've legitimately bought in a year. -
does anybody know if the aspect ration switches during imax scenes o nthe blu-ray? can this be turned off?
-
reading the descriptions on Amazon, it does not look like the IMAX scenes are incorporated into the film. They are probably only in the second disc. "The Dark Knight IMAX® Scenes: View these 6 action-packed sequences--shot on the largest format possible--in their original IMAX framing, just as they were intended "
-
that quote is from the "Two-disc features" description
-
Blu-ray features
"2.40:1 aspect ratio, with IMAX sequences in 1.78:1'
-
would not want my aspect ratio switching mid film. God I wish IMAX would die.
-
Howard and Zimmer's score BLOWS away Elfmans original score! Elfmans was great at the time and I never thought anyone would do a better score but I was VERY wrong! Batman Begins and TDK's music is awesome!!!!
-
Exactly...what a gimmick. Give me a beautifully composed 2.35:1 image any day of the week.
-
Elfman's score is a much better standalone score, whereas Howard and Zimmer's score works within the context of the film but is not exactly 'easy listening'. I like both but prefer the Elfman score, perhaps partly due to nostalgia.
-
Did either of you SEEit in IMAX? It gave quite a bit of "oommmph" to certain scenes. I don't know how it will play on Blu-ray, but I imagine it will look gorgeous.
-
...are the only weak links in the chain. Zimmer's shit makes the movies seem Bay-ish.
-
I always heard the same humming tune? This Movie is way overrated. But all hail to the hypno toad i guess
-
I'll definitly be buying this, even though amazon.com has it advertised for $45. I thought it was just a CD book, but it looks like a legit hardback cover.
-
I disagree with those who say the scores in the Nolan movies aren't good. They completely fit the mood and theme of the films. I've listed to the BB OST MANY times...TDK is very good as well. If you take the time to really LISTEN to the themes, they really are very heavy and complex in parts. Overall great scores. Definitely not some recycled mainstream crap we hear so much.
-
That movie soundtrack was good, but sorely lacking in material if you ask me. I just wish the record companies would release all the material from the get-go, and quit trying to get more money by delaying the actual 'complete' versions.
-
And just like last year, the best score of the year is kept out of the Oscars. I suppose the Crystal Skull or Cassandra's Dream scores (also GREAT) won't be nominated, either. Here's pulling for Wall-E, I guess. The Howard/Zimmer scores have actually had a MASSIVE influence on action film scores, as Nolan specifies in the liner notes for the realistically priced soundtrack for Dark Knight... Just listen to the Transformers Jablonsky stuff and realize it is a STRAIGHT ripoff of Batman Begins.
-
I'm interested to see the IMAX/35mm aspect ratio switch in the Dark Knight DVD. It was distracting in the IMAX screening only because the 35 stuff was fish-eyed... Is it only for the Blu Ray, or the standard def one, too?
