FAKK2 (aka HEAVY METAL 2) Website Opens Up
Hey folks, Harry here. Over at http://www.fakk2.com/default-2.htm they have the whole kit and kaboodle of a website up for FAKK2 (aka HEAVY METAL 2). We've had a few images here and there from the film, but this site literally has every character, all sorts of weapons... Tons of material to go through.
Ultimately I think a lot of the designs are a bit chunky, but it sure does look like it could very well be cool as hell. For me, alot is going to depend on the music, since after the first Heavy Metal... I just adored both the Rock soundtrack as well as the score. Also.... will the one narrative be as cool as the segmented stories. I mean... DEN and HARRY and CAPTAIN STERN and TAARNA and... well... you get the point.
Ultimately I want another great Drive-In adolescent animated fantasy flicker that just rocks the living hell out of me. I'm pulling for them, and certainly some of what is at this website excites the hell out of me... but still... I'm hesitant to get too excited. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Hi guys,
I don't no much about this subject but I just mailed to be the first. Very lame but that's life. Sue me! -
I think if you're going to do something like this you might as well just go for the R rating.

A good friend of mine did backgrounds on the new HM. From his unflattering descriptions of the work enviroment and direction, I would not get my hopes up about this being quality work. I only hope he's wrong since I really would like to see a decent second movie.

What I want to know is "When the hell are they ever going to release the fantastic Elmer Bernstien score from the original on CD?" My vinyl copy ain't what it used to be and that score screams for digital clarity. Like Harry said, the music will make or break this flick. Without the great songs, the first film probably would have been long forgotten. I haven't heard anything about the soundtrack (or score) for the new one yet; maybe the website will tell, but THAT, more than the animation design will determine if this is a worthy follow-up. Let's face it, some of the animation in the first one outright sucked, but the music kept me hooked.

ow the hell are they going to make a Heavy Metal remake with John Candy? Huh? Answer me that!whataloss.

I agree, go for the R rating.
Just like Mad Max and Conan, you can back up to PG after an R.
I'd bet good money it won't hold a candle to the original. -
I suppose the only reason they're calling it Heavy Metal is to capitalize on the name recognition, but it hardly seems related. I have to admit that the idea of a sequel doesn't much appeal to me. I was 17 when Heavy Metal hit the theaters, and even then I thought it was weakly written and unevenly animated. A film of moments and a lot of uninvolving segments. Even the soundtrack was badly used. Well, I suppose this is a chance for them to do better...but I can't say I'm hopeful.

Being a big fan of Eastman's graphic novel that this film is based on (MELTING POT), I believe that the new film will capture the HEAVY METAL feel just like the first one did. I can't wait!

I THINK (haven't read the mag in
years) that there is an ongoing
character that the film is based
on named "FAKK 2" where the story
originated from in the mag.
Could be wrong on this one.
My two cents...this 'sequel' is about 10 years too late. VV -
I will NOT see a Heavy Metal film that is only rated PG-13. It will not have any of sex/drugs/language/gore that made the first one so great. This movie will SUCK!
-
first lemme tell ya that in 20 years I have NEVER heard ANYONE bash the original Heavy Metal movie and continue to inhale air into their lungs...people like ed-x and pinkFlyd7 are ignorant of the fact that the original movie DIDNT have sporatic chunks of so called "suck" animation, it utilized different styles of all sorts of animation. The only parts that I thought flat out sucked were presented for the first time on the release of the video at the VERY END after the credits because it didnt match the rest of the movie! (still nice art but ugh...finish animating your storyboards, pal!!) I'm sorry if each and every FRAME of the original didnt PLEASE you, you'll NEVER BE SATIFIED! ED-X why dont YOU try putting together an animated feature film? It aint all peaches and cream and it sure as hell doesn't smell like roses all the time! Now as for the second movie, I am not expecting it to even "hold a candle" up to the original, this is Kevin Eastman's Melting Pot we're talking about. Did "Phantom Menace" hold a candle to STAR WARS: A New Hope? NO. Did Phantom Menace flat out suck? (well thats open to public opinion) I will continue to hope for the best while fearing the worst, at least then I wont be dissapointed! And I have less of a problem with them nameing it "Heavy Metal" than I have with the geniouses who want to do "Halloween 8" WITHOUT Michael Myers, Jamie Lee Curtis or Donald Plesance! ...I'll be first in line... --McK

cool as hell images!! I'm really exited.....the site says NOTHING of the music (apparantly they havent picked out soundtrack artists and designed a score, which I thought was a wee bit odd considering its being released mid-August) but the images look cool as hell, I couldnt tell if the TRIXTER 3d images were from the "Fearful Four" movie that the unit was working on BEFORE getting drafted by Kevin Eastman and Heavy METAL or from the Heavy Metal Movie itself (but they rock so hard it doesnt even matter!!) Still I have to wonder about the script...has anyone actually read it? HARRY? GLENN? --McK

I have it on tape and vinyl as well as the Movie on tape. "Veteran of the Psychic Wars", and "Radar Rider" rock !!

Could've been great if they cut the awful "Den" and "Harry Canyon" sequences, gave more money to the "B-17" animators, didn't touch an inch of the excellent "Captain Sternn" and did an expanded "Taarna" sequence including the B.O.C. song written for it, 'Vengeance (The Pact)'. But they didn't do that. I'm sure the creators of 'F.A.K.K.2' will be as short sighted and fill the screen with naughty forgettables and dated music. Remember that "rockin'" original batch of songs? Maybe three of them still stand up. The rest have wrinkles you could hide a corpse in. I wish the makers of the new movie luck, but I don't give them much hope.

I have a very vague memory from childhood of a commercial for "Heavy Metal". In this commercial, the one very distinct memory I have, was(this is very vague) of some really muscled guy posing down in front of a babe. Then she smiles and looks over her shoulder to the other side, and this ridiculously big guy does a "power flex" (I can't think of a better name for it) and his biceps do this where they just keep stacking on top of each other, going up and up and up. They break through a glass ceiling or something. It's set in a "future" setting. Thats all I remember. My question would be, out of all the great minds who read this, does ANYONE ELSE remember this? Or am I just making it up or confusing it with something else? Did I dream it?
Please help my confused brain.

Forgive the sophistication of this post, or rather the lack thereof. But Heavy Metal, a fond memory of a B movie that it was, was all about the tits and ass. It's like they made a serial comic book spiced with sex and nudity and, despite the overwhelming camp of the piece, it was just so much fucking fun you didn't care. A PG-13 Heavy Metal is just wrong for some reason. I'll see the movie out of curiosity and a desire for nostalgia, but this whole thing sounds like a watering down designed to appeal to that all important teen target audience.

heavy metal has gone down hill, tis true. most fans who like the first one got tired of waiting for another no singing no dancing full animated feature film and moved on to anime, like me. heavy metal was the best of its time as far as serious animation goes. but that time has passed, where the real money is in cartoons? Fox or WB should bring over some popular animes and put them out in the theaters. why watch fakk2 when you can watch blood, ginro, spriggan, or the vampire hunter d anime movies. disney did it thru miramax, but there going to screw up their largest competitor by using lousy actors to do the voices for mononoke-hime, because miyazaki got their balls in a clinch in a contract. they can't change the story, but believe me, they'll screw it up somehow.

well, one saving grace to american animation is coming out soon, iron giant, no singing, no dancing, just a boy and his giant robot. which so happens to be an anime tradition.
batman, superman, and batman beyond have making excellent steps toward taking away the stereotype that animation and comics and for kids and dullards.
how?
using anime.

I've said it once. I will say it again. Anime is crap! I agree that a mature, sophisticated story told in cartoon form would be cool. But really, should we be holding up Anime as the ideal to which american animation should aspire?? The animation is so herky-jerky as to induce nausea. It's like they can only afford to draw 2 or 3 frames for every second of screentime. Of course, if that isn't visually irritating enough for your taste, perhaps you will enjoy all the bright lights which flash during action scenes for no apparent reason. And all the characters have eyes that could dwarf the hubcaps on a '59 Caddy--WHY??? But hey, at least the plots are well-written and make logical sense. Right? (snicker snicker).....
