Harry's DVD Picks & Peeks - 4th week of Nov DVDs: Criterions & More

Published at:  Dec 01, 2008 3:33:36 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with today’s DVD Picks and Peeks. The Criterion stuff is the particular stand-outs this week, but this isn’t the strongest week of the year, though next week is REALLY good. As always if you click on the Box Art or Titles you’ll be taken to AMAZON where you can learn more on the title in question or if you’re feeling the urge, you can purchase the item with a small portion of the purchase price going to support this column. Also – I’d recommend this Friday checking out: The Amazon Black Friday Specials for some incredibly good deals. I seriously mean that, save on gas and crowd stress. Anyway, here’s the picks this week:

HANCOCK

A fantastic first hour, that gives way to an utterly forgettable load of shit in the second hour. The script just unravels – the film just completely loses focus and it just begins to drown in its own mediocrity. I loathe ever twist after the one hour mark. That said – that first act is so solid that I actually enjoy having this Blu-Ray – I just don’t think I ever would have paid for it. Perhaps traded for it at a second hand shop, but definitely not full retail.

A COLBERT CHRISTMAS: THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL!

At Christmas – my family has always celebrated 3 things… Our lord, Jesus Christ… The Great Santa Claus… and the Spirit of Materialism embodied in the mass of presents we gave to one another. This year – beyond Jesus, Santa and Presents… there is a new purpose for worship and it is in his name I praise this DVD… STEPHEN COLBERT. Watching this DVD shook me to the core. If you thought Scrooge or George Bailey or the Trial of Kris Kringle was a reason to tear up at Christmas… just wait till you see the drama and the amazement that comes with this fabulous Christmas program. Colbert reminds us all what Christmas is about… STEPHEN COLBERT – and ya know, I’d been so blinded by religion and my own sense of greed that I forgot the important secret meaning of Christmas… and that is that JC may have left us, but he also gave us SC. And for that, I am humbled. I plead with all of you to buy this DVD – to teach you and yours the meaning in Christmas that too many of us have forgot.

BOTTLE ROCKET – Criterion Collection – Blu-Ray

Today – the standard def Criterion edition comes out – but I just want to put this version in front of you, because… On December 16th – you’ll have the opportunity to get this film in BLU RAY! So if you’ve any interest in High Def – don’t pick up the standard def that’s out today. Here’s the features:

DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL BLU-RAY EDITION FEATURES:
New, restored high-definition digital transfer supervised and approved by director Wes Anderson and director of photography Robert Yeoman
DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack
Commentary by director/co-writer Anderson and co-writer/star Owen Wilson
The Making of Bottle Rocket : an original documentary by filmmaker Barry Braverman featuring Anderson, James L. Brooks, James Caan, Temple Nash Jr., Kumar Pallana, Polly Platt, Mark Mothersbaugh, Robert Musgrave, Richard Sakai, David and Sandy Wasco, Andrew and Luke and Owen Wilson, and Robert Yeoman
The original thirteen-minute black-and-white Bottle Rocket short film from 1992

Murita Cycles, a 1978 short film by Braverman
The Shafrazi Lectures, no. 1: Bottle Rocket
PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by executive producer James L. Brooks, an appreciation by Martin Scorsese, and original artwork by Ian Dingman

THE KINGDOM (Blu-Ray)

This is a vastly superior Peter Berg film to HANCOCK. I really do like this film and that end sequence – harrowing. I’m really glad to have this one in Blu-Ray!

SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD – Criterion Collection

I love Spy stories and this is a brutal, non-showy Spy film that just feels tragically real. Based on John Le Carre’s novel – and it still stands as the best adaptation of his work (with THE CONSTANT GARDENER coming in closely behind) This is a really great spy flick. Here’s the extras:

SPECIAL EDITION DOUBLE-DISC SET FEATURES:
New, restored high-definition digital transfer
New interviews with author John Le Carré and cinematographer Oswald Morris
The Secret Center: John Le Carré (2000), a BBC documentary on the author s extraordinary life and work
Acting in the '60s: Richard Burton, a 1967 interview with the BBC s Kenneth Tynan examining the actor's performances
and accomplishments
Gallery of set designs
Theatrical trailer
PLUS: A booklet featuring a new essay by critic
Michael Sragow and a reprinted interview with Ritt

CHUNGKING EXPRESS – Criterion Collection

Wow. Again – there’s a standard Def release of this coming out today – but I’m putting the BLU-RAY in front of you – which doesn’t hit till December 16th. You have to be careful on these titles – there’s no visual give away that these releases are Blu Ray from the front cover – other than the box is shorter than the standard def box. That said – having both versions here – The Blu Ray – my first Criterion Blu Ray is just flat out amazing. Criterion brings their scholarly and loving impassioned treatment to High Def and boy oh boy can I not wait for the flood of titles to hit. The slow-motion and blurred action beauty of this film are absolutely hypnotic at 1080p. Truly exquisite visuals and audio. I know that’s nothing you don’t expect from a 1080p release of a Wong Kar-Wai title – but folks – flat out WOW!

SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES:
New, restored high-definition digital transfer
DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1
Audio commentary by noted Asian cinema critic Tony Rayns
U.S. theatrical trailer
New and improved English subtitle translation
PLUS: A booklet featuring a new essay by critic Amy Taubin and excerpts from a 1996 Sight and Sound interview with Wong by Rayns
More!

BECKET (Blu Ray)

Now… I would’ve sworn on a stack of Bibles that I’d seen BECKET, but when I put this Blu-Ray in this past week and I watched this film… there was not a single frame or a single line that I was familiar with. BUT Holy Shit… this film is fan-fucking-tastic! As great as Richard Burton is as the title character… it is the brilliant performance by Peter O’Toole as Henry II that just blew me away.

God I wish we had an actor today that revealed so much through his eyes and face – strength, insecurity, love, hatred, pettiness and a feeling of being cursed – in a matter of moments, the way O’Toole does here. Yes, I know… he’s fucking Peter O’Toole – but you know. Sitting her watching this brilliant film for the first time… watching it 9’ by 12’ in 1080p… his performance just humbled me.

And Burton? Burton is fantastic as BECKET – but Peter has the better role, the juicier role. But Burton is the anchor of the film. If you didn’t love Becket, O’Toole’s HENRY II would make no sense. Thus is the brilliance of this incredibly intimate character piece of an epic. Just brilliant.

SUPERMAN – DOOMSDAY (Blu-Ray)

I already owned this in HD-DVD, but now the surviving High Def format has finally added it. This film is brutal. Bruce Timm definitely does not pull punches in this brutal brutal fight of titans in the streets and concrete canyons of Metropolis. When I showed SUPERMAN DOOMSDAY to my nephew – during the ill-fated initial fight with Doomsday – as Superman was beaten to death… it made him cry and when Supes returns… He cheers. It is truly an animated film that can motivate one to laugh, cheer and cry – that’s remarkable.

JARHEAD (Blu-Ray)

I really love Mendes’ JARHEAD and in particular – Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance, along with that of Jamie Foxx. This IRAQ war tale… is hauntingly beautiful and that scene of the troops watching APOCALYPSE NOW… a movie I always considered to be a film meant to make people want to steer clear of the madness of war… being viewed as a movie to FIRE one up for war. Well, it kinda shocked my fragile liberal commie pinko pacifist thoughts. I like that. Well done Sam! The oil field fire sequence on Blu Ray is just beautiful!

BLACK NARCISSUS (Blu-Ray)

One of the most stunning works of motion picture cinematography – Powell & Pressburger’s classic BLACK NARCISSUS is an absolute must see in 1080p for serious cinephiles. This is an All-Region disc, so it will play in your machine! A really great release for the format.

GIRLS IN CHAINS

I don’t believe I’ve seen this exploitation title – it doesn’t sound familiar, but the box art and the following description on AMAZON have me anxious to give it a look. Here’s what they say:

In a remote country house, a malevolent form of sleaze and terror is being bred. A crazy mother encourages her two sons raving lunatic Frank and his not-all-there brother Johnny to kidnap young women and chain them up in the basement. The girls are treated like animals and then subjected to games that grow increasingly sinister and depraved. When the brothers tire of their playthings, the girls must be replaced. This lost exploitation classic is every bit as morally corrupt as you've heard.

THE ATOMIC CAFÉ

I first saw this film at the age of 10. We were still having “Duck & Cover” drills in my elementary school – and I remember telling my friends after I saw this film, that it didn’t matter if we “Ducked and Covered” because if an A-Bomb hit Austin, we were all vapor and ash. That’s a sobering thought for a child, but it is what kept us in the Cold War era shivering that extra bit. I love the sardonic jet black humor of this film and this is a great release of the film. A real classic.

FREAKS & GEEKS: YEARBOOK EDITION

I have still never seen an episode of this Apatow produced series. I don’t know a single thing about the show – other than it is apparently brilliant – and I’m an idiot for having never seen it. A fact that I fully intend to rectify. And I believe this is the set to do it with. Here’s what is so special about this edition:

Previously available only via the Freaks and Geeks website, and now long out of print, this special edition contains all the original episodes, commentaries and special features of the Complete Season set, plus two bonus discs all housed in a loving recreation of a 40-page yearbook, chock-full of exclusive photos, memorabilia and essays.
_Special Features on the the Yearkbook Edition's Two Exclusive Bonus Discs__* Museum of Television & Radio Panel__* Table Read__* Deleted Scenes__* Original Cast Auditions__* Raw Footage__* Mr. Rosso Live In Concert__* Photo Galleries__* NBC Promos__* Behind the Scenes footage

THE RON HOWARD SPOTLIGHT COLLECTION ( BACKDRAFT / APOLLO 13 / A BEAUTIFUL MIND / CINDERELLA MAN )

I watched FROST/NIXON earlier tonight… That is very possibly the very best film of Ron Howard’s career. I feel my personal favorite film of his is probably SPLASH – and I miss that silly side of Howard from that film and PARENTHOOD, but as I look upon this set – you can’t deny the quality of these 4 films and how great they are. That said – I’d recommend holding off for Blu-Ray – as these 4 films absolutely deserve to be enjoyed that way. Unless you have no intention of joining the Blu Ray cult of visual perfection.

That’s it for this week, but as you’re thinking about gifts and the future this Black Friday – if I may suggest a few gifts… I suggest the following upcoming jewels…

THE DARK KNIGHT: Limited Edition With BATPOD – Blu-Ray!!!

Ya know – I love toys and sculptures with highend cool movies – and well, this Batpod is pretty nifty to have. It’s sweet as hell looking too. And this is the best geek movie of the year, right? And some people feel it is just flat out the best film of the year.

Criterion Collection’s THE THIRD MAN Blu-Ray

This is easily one of my very favorite films of all time and on December 16th, this beauty of light and shadow and zither music is just exquisite. Here’s the features:

BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES:
Restored high-definition digital transfer
Uncompressed mono soundtrack
Video introduction by writer-director Peter Bogdanovich
Two audio commentaries: one by filmmaker Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Tony Gilroy, and one by by film scholar Dana Polan
Shadowing The Third Man (2005), a ninety-minute feature documentary on the making of the film
Abridged recording of Graham Greene s treatment, read by actor Richard Clarke
Graham Greene: The Hunted Man, an hour-long, 1968 episode of the BBC s Omnibus series, featuring a rare interview with the novelist
Who Was the Third Man? (2000), a thirty-minute Austrian documentary featuring interviews with cast and crew
The Third Man on the radio: the 1951 A Ticket to Tangiers episode of The Lives of Harry Lime series, written and performed by Orson Welles, and the 1951 Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of The Third Man
Illustrated production history with rare behind-the-scenes photos, original UK press book, and U.S. trailer
Actor Joseph Cotten s alternate opening voice-over narration for the U.S. version
Archival footage of postwar Vienna
A look at the untranslated foreign dialogue in the film
PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by Luc Sante

FROM DUSK TIL DAWN Blu Ray

This doesn’t hit til December 9th, but I’m dying for it to hit. This is my favorite Robert Rodriguez film. I just love that Titty Twister. I love Keitel, Clooney, Salma, Cheech, Juliette Lewis and Quentin’s sick sick character. I love Sex Machine and Fred Williamson – and I just love everything about the film. This all region pressing will be a delight to own, till whenever a stateside release is finally done.

Anyway – that’s all I got for this week, I’ll see you next week with: PRINCE CASPIAN, WANTED, the real FROST/NIXON tapes, SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE, Season 2 of METALOCALYPSE, STEP BROTHERS, SNL 4th Season, original DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL Blu Ray, Austin Powers collection Blu Ray, CASABLANCA Blu Ray, HOME ALONE Blu, LA FEMME NIKITA Blu, SIN CITY Blu, WHITE DOG – Criterion, THE MAN CALLED FLINTSTONE, THE MESSENGER: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC Blu, TEENAGE ANGST, original ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 Blu, RAPE OF EUROPA, DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS: A MODERN MUSKETEER, 12 MONKEYS Blu, TALES OF THE UNEXPLAINED and much more…

Forcing Apatow down to standard television episode lengths would probably be a move for the better. I don't know about you guys, but I'm just not digging these three hour comedy epics that lose their story and turn into gag reels halfway through. I get that sometimes funny things happen on the set or an actor guy improvises some funny line and you really want to include that in the movie and share it with the world. But there's something to be said for keeping the plot moving and staying relevant to the movie. Just take that funny moment, remember it, and write it into the context of your movie. Please.

    by hobocode

Kudos to you Harry fro mentioning one of the more surreal scenes in this vastly underrated film. It always perplexes me when anti-war films are digested in the wrong context. Another example is Full Metal Jacket. That movie has been distorted into some kind of pro-war comedy when it was meant to show the horrors of Vietnam and the draconian, fascistic, sociopathic nature of U.S. armed services training.

Come on- you don't like beard jokes? "Freaks and Geeks" isn't like movie-Apatow. It doesn't have punchlines like that, where every actor gets a go about the beard. Plus the lead is female and she isn't doing schtick.

*slight spoiler* IIRC, Lindsay is initially interested in James Franco's character but that storyline just disappears, which was kind of strange. (Although there's a lot more going on than that).

The Brains, length of Apatow movies

    by spandau belly

My problem with Apatow movies isn't any specific joke, for the most part I like the jokes in his movies. The problem is that I'm only interested in laughing at that kind of stuff for about 90 minutes.I like lots of long movies like There Will Be Blood and Zodiac and Lawrence of Arabia, but those movies just have more gripping subject matter and can hold my attention for 3 hours. Whereas dudes having dirty conversations is good for about an hour and half.I actually used be one of those guys who would see the deleted scenes reel on some comedy movie and say "That's hysterical! They should've left that in the movie!", but Apatow's movies have actually turned me around on that and made me appreciate the value of editing.I find that, of the movies of his I've seen, that by the time they hit what should be the halfway mark in a normal comedy movie they've amassed so many supporting characters and subplots that they need two more movies to resolve them all and that they generally spin off into tangents and leave me shifting in my seat by the final twenty minutes.Like I said, his material is generally pretty good, it's mostly his inability to look at the film as a whole and keep a plot structure in mind.Maybe you guys are different. Maybe for some of you guys if a comedy movie's individual scenes are as funny as scenes in Braveheart are compelling, then you feel they should both be the same length. Maybe I just have a more limited appetite for this stuff.

    by obsd

I've seen this in stores for a few years now and most recently just saw this in a store a few weeks ago. It was insanely overpriced. $60.00 for one season of TV? What, do you think this is and HBO season boxed set or something? And now the price has gone up to $170.00?!? Most times when a dvd season is repackaged, they lower the price, not double it.
I'm actually waiting for the 10th anniversary edition that costs $100,000.00. That's the one where Linda Cardellini comes over your house and sucks your dick while you watch the show.

From Dusk til Dawn Blu-Ray already avail.

    by billy sunday

    Harry...

Just a heads up for you and anyone else who's interested in buying this, you don't have to wait until December 9th and you can still buy it from Amazon. I don't know why US Amazon is selling it like that with a delayed release date and a much more expensive price tag, but that's a Canadian import disc that's been out for awhile, you can buy it directly from Canadian Amazon at amazon.ca. Here's the link:
    http://tinyurl.com/duskdawn
And get this, it's only 12.95 Canadian which is just over $10 USD. You can use your regular amazon.com account information, it works just fine. I bought the Canadian Sin City and Nightmare on Elm Street Blu-Ray's from amazon.ca a few weeks back. If you're going to get From Dusk til Dawn anyway, I'd suggest at least picking Sin City up to save on the shipping, it looks very nice in 1080p. And you don't have to worry about whether or not it's all region, the Blu-Ray regions are much broader than DVD region codes. All of North and South America, including the US and Canada are on region A as is Japan. So everything's fine with imports from those countries. UK/Euro imports would be region B so then you would need to look for all region discs. I live in Austin, so if you want to borrow the Sin City or Nightmare on Elm Street Blu-Ray's to check them out you're more than welcome to, just let me know.

The "Man, Ron Howard Sucks!" Collection

    by solongyoubastard

Overrated, braindead and just plain horrible I think would be the short version of my argument against the "quality" of at least three of these films. Remember that shot in Cinderella Man where Crowe's getting pummeled and they go to slow motion and have an x-ray of his heart? Jesus. They couldn't put out a set with Night Shift, Parenthood, The Paper and Willow - fun movies he made when he wasn't this phony prestige filmmaker? They should put the Grand Theft Auto trailer in front of every new Ron Howard film to remind us (and him) where he came from.

Superman vs. Doomsday = Dumb writing

Doomsday can't fly. So Superman carries him out into space. Great you think, he's going to give him a little nudge and that'll be that. Heck, maybe toss a helpless Doomsday into the sun. Nope, he decides to do the stupidest thing possible: he's going to do an atomic piledriver into Metropolis, citizens and property be damned. Good action scenes, but there were a lot of plot holes in this version.

    by i am_notreal

No more needs to be said about a movie with such criminal disrespect for its audience...the best shot of From Dusk Til Dawn was the last one...I was surprised that Jarhead stuck so closely to the book, I really thought they'd be under more pressure to ratchet up the action. That's all I have to say about that.

Really, Harry? Better than TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY?

    by admonisher

Impossible! Perhaps Harry meant that THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD was the best BIG SCREEN adaptation of LeCarre, which I might agree with. Or maybe he hasn't yet seen TINKER, TAILER, SOLDIER, SPY, the epic miniseries which starred the incomparable Alec Guinness as George Smiley (quite possibly his greatest performance -- he simply VANISHES into the role) and a whole cast of British greats, including Ian Richardson, Joss Ackland, Ian Bannen and many more. (It's follow-up, SMILEY'S PEOPLE, is almost equally good.) Or maybe ... well, my opinion is not Law and Harry may simply disagree that TINKER, TAILOR is superior. :-) But gosh, I'd love to find out if he's seen it, because if he hasn't he's in for a REAL treat!

    by dracula_wants_the_amulet

Got me one early the Imax scenes are unbelievable. I wish the entire film was shot with those 70mm cameras the image pops. Getting this on DVD would be an insult. I saw it in a standard digital cinema. I don't remember the framing changing from the scenes shot with the IMAX camera's. I guess they cropped those scenes to fit with the others ones. Well theres no cropping here. You see the imax shit in opening then the frame shriks again when you return to the normal shit. It's not distracting. And the detail is so much better in th eImax stuff it's like night and day... God this movie rules!

just to make it clear when the show first came out on dvd it was about $100,since they fought to get all the original music.this is why the dvd sets like wkrp are so cheap since they just swapped the music from the original ones.back then there wasnt anything in print about dvd releases of the shows so they had to redo all contracts.that yearbook edition was the one that went out of print years back,it was originally offered to anyone who was part of the campaign to get the show back on the air.

not crazy about the aspect ration changes on TDK

    by indyabbey jones

don't get me wrong, i love the imax stuff, but would prefer if they just croped it to 2:40 so it macthed the rest of the movie (much like they did for the thatrical release)all that switching just seems like it would be distracting, or maybe even cause firmware problems aspect ratio changes are really neat int he theatre but terrible on home video, hense why most movies that contain it, alter the dvd to exclude it because it just doesn't work on a TV, i can only think of enchanted as one that kept it and that was distracting as hell on a widescreen plasma tv, but brilliant in the theatre

    by thegreatpumpkin

I don't cry often, for better or for worse, but sometimes even when I don't I can feel it on the inside, so maybe you know what I mean there. Anyways, the few things I can think back on and remember this feeling are, recently, watching Wall-E (the scene near the beginning where he's watching Hello Dolly) and watching the episode of F&G called "The Garage Door". Truly a heartbreaking testament to friendship, that episode.

I'm one of the biggest Superman fans ever...

    by kal reeve

And let me warn you that "Superman/Doomsday" is absolutely awful. There is one strong moment in the entire film, but the rest is souless fodder not worthy of the World's Greatest Superhero. What is so disappointing is that the Warner Bros./DC animation division had an opportunity to translate one of the great comic tales of our time - the Death and Return of Superman - but failed on every level. This poor excuse of an "animated epic" in no way resembles the truly epic and stirring source material. It steals a couple of iconic images from the comics, such as Superman's detached, tattered cape flapping in the wind, but lacks the excellent storytelling and great emotional moments. Stay away from this film. The DVD's only saving grace is an excellent documentary detailing how a group of DC editors, writers and artists brought the world to mourn its greatest fictional icon. If you want a truly great DC animated experience, pick up "New Frontier." If you want a great Superman experience, pop in "Superman: The Movie" or pick up the Death, Funeral and Return of Superman trades. Then you'll have something epic to enjoy.

That piledriver was totally out of character for Superman. The Animation was cheap, worse I think than the TV shows (which were good but I'd expect better from a DVD) and the story lacked any kind of focus or impact. It was a bad story in the comics that never should have been translated to video in the first place.

    by the milf lover

yeah it kind of crapped out in the end, but overall it was entertaining. The biggest problem was the lousy villains, who were so lame they normally wouldnt last 5 minutes against Vic Mackey, let alone superpowered people, yet were able to cause so much damage. That and the 'proximity makes Hancock lose his powers' angle was stupid, since it means that as a race they'd be useless unless they're never together.

    ANTI-WAR FILMS

    by bobparr

Kubrick stated that FULL METAL JACKET was not political. PATHS OF GLORY was his anti-war movie. He wanted to do a hero's journey movie to show how a Marine is created. He knew it was a unique subject at that time.

JARHEAD also went out of its way to avoid politics. It was more about how fucked up modern war can be with all of the politics, beurocracy, and boredom involved. I have a friend who served in the Gulf and he felt the movie was very unrealistic but the hydrating scenes were right on. They would drink water until gagging.

and an all around horrible movie. I've only asked for my money back twice, and both were films staring that hack Gyllenhaal. He's about as haunting as a chuck e cheese. As for Foxx, I know he's an over-the-top sort of actor, but his performance was just plain laughably bad, and laugh I did outloud at all the "uncomfortably haunting" moments.

This was a flawed movie based on an even more flawed book. You want to see a gung ho soldier disenfranchised with war, go rent Born of the Fourth of July, the film this POS spends 2 hours wishing it was.

    by antonphd

To hate a movie you have to watch the movie. I haven't hated a movie that I didn't already know I wasn't going to like. I haven't hated a movie since I learned not to waste my time watching movies that I know I am not going to like. I have better things to do with my life than watch movies that I am probably going to hate. Actually, the two George Smiley mini-series are the best Le Carre adaptations. Tinker, Tailor comes in first followed by Smiley's People. "Now… I would’ve sworn on a stack of Bibles that I’d seen BECKET, but when I put this Blu-Ray in this past week and I watched this film… there was not a single frame or a single line that I was familiar with. BUT Holy Shit… this film is fan-fucking-tastic! As great as Richard Burton is as the title character… it is the brilliant performance by Peter O’Toole as Henry II that just blew me away."

Are you serious, Harold? I really can't tell if you are joking. Did you not write on 2007's May 22 Picks and Peeks, and I quote...

"It should be bought for the Peter O’Toole commentary alone. To listen to O’Toole tell stories about this amazing production… well, it is bliss. That said – you really ought to get this because BECKET is just a fucking amazing film featuring not only a brilliant performance by Peter O’Toole… but Richard Burton and John Gielgud – and it is a toweringly brilliant film. Now – the dvd also has interviews with the editor, composer and… Richard Burton – from long long ago. O’Toole is Henry II – and always shall be. The role is his forever. Behold a masterpiece."

    • Hated the Death of Superman comics. Worked great as a gimmick, but not much else.•Thought Superman Doomsday was better than the comic -- but that bar was pretty low. It was ridiculous to throw in gratuitous violence, language and sexual suggestions just to give a cartoon a PG-13 rating. Yes, I know it's "the Death of Superman", and so violence is part of it -- I'm just saying that some of the over-the-top stuff were eye-rollers.• "2 final Silver Age Superman comics both written by Alan Moore" -- agreed. These are excellent, excellent stories to wrap up a continuity that had become extremely convoluted.• Personally, I'd recommend buying Superman Doomsday in whichever version is the cheapest -- it's not worth spending extra $$ for. It is, however, better than "Brainac Attacks", which is a churned-out, embarrassing bit of dreck.

And course "All Star Superman" fits that bill as well. The Death of Superman is a great story, but in a different way. It's big, brutal and visceral, but also charged with emotion. I understand it's not everyone's cup of cocoa, but it perfectly captures Superman as the world's ultimate protector, Earth's Greatest Champion.

    The Dark Knight...

    by kaspianwithak

was the cinematic equivalent of eating a pound of dark chocolate and running a marathon at the same time. An experience I'm surprised didn't outright kill harry, especially if he watched it in bluray.

    Yes, THE THIRD MAN..

    by maxthesilent

...is fucking glorious. An pitch-perfect thriller with one of the greatest scripts of all time. Yet, due to Criterion's Draconian adherence to region coding, I will have to wait an indeterminate amount of time before I get experience it in the glory of 1080p. Oh, if only the infinitely superior HD-DVD had 'won' we wouldn't be in this quandry.

    SUPERMAN/ DOOMSDAY, MEANWHILE

    by ptsdpete

Is worse than the Lifestyle Channel. The obviously higher rating of this should have, at least, incited the producers to go all-out unapologetic into waxing something far breakout and dense. Instead, the lazier PG ( NOT Y 7 ) signposts it succumbed to has only reduced it into B-grade, TV-movie of the week stuff all the actual regular series, and most especially Justice League Unlimited, can reduce to a sneeze any day of the week. You'd even think it was one. Which, unfortunately it was. From the pseudo-blasphemous diatribe of the ominous bad, evil guy at the beginning , to name checking a real world serious, grown-up, adult issue ( i.e. Afghanistan ), to the implied obligatory, recreational sex between the two charismatic hetero leads... Then, field scenario ‘s got a few of Mr. Bad Dude’s on-site workers excavating some wierd alien vessel buried underneath - which then pops some scary, alien monster that maims and kills everyone, horror-cam style. The ugly abortion later goes on his predictable, formulaic rampage onto a stray animal ( preferably a deer; they’ve been most fun creatures to break since Bambi ) , some hick with a shotgun, and a trucker in a mountainside road, before launching himself into the city. It's an emergency situation, that a no less, a cheap robot in an outer base, reminds us off, prompting the marauding good action guy ( who owns the place – and the bimbo reporter chick ) to charge into the scene. Some by-the-numbers, low-budget, fight scene ensues with nominal level–damage ( it’s just BUILDINGS ! ); finishing with the creature's death, but not without the main dude's heroic, big time sacrifice. Tears all around amongst the people left to see the sorry sight, including said bimbo – which goes on way off into a hammy, extended melodrama, with the disaffected society, and amongst the loved ones, and the impressionable news kid being tempted to sell his left legacy ( or something ) to a tabloid corporation . Evil, ridiculous, things continue to sprout everywhere like that - that is , until the inevitable arrival of the lead douche who comes swooping back like clockwork ( rendering all the previous set-up temporal and weaker ), who conveniently saves his lady, and saves the day. But not without lame-ass contrivances dealt with by no less than that star mad-scientist hackery we begun this rush job with. Wait, how many times have we seen this sort of shit played by Casper Van Dien in live action? At least, those sort of stuff has the wisdom to run with their top-billed villain to the very end ! This one completely lost irrelevance way earlier its due time. It shocks me that Bruce Timm has had a hand in all of this. It is even sadder than the title, and the sort of story it specifically portents to, refers to the disposable, almost incidental, first 1/5 of the entire film. All the time that should have been put into more interesting stuff like the Reign of the Supermen, was dumped into overlong stretches of tired plot shorthands like Lex Luthor controlling Superman, Jimmy Olsen going with a tabloid newspaper, or any of that sort of menial shit that bores itself. There were only about two things that stood out, and little else afterwards : 1. ) the shot of Kal El's blood streaking across Lois' face while Doomsday was fatally demolishing him, which was the ' kick of the pants ' moment ; and 2. )their ok rendition of Toyman ( further contextualing the character as a malaise that could only have surfaced in a Metropolis where the Man of Steel died was an able, inspired touch ). Plus, the Doomsday seems to be presented as more terrifying than previous incarnation, listless, mute, bug-eyed murderous fuck face. Still, the title fight scene, implied as being the ‘ crux ‘ of the whole damn deal, was not only short-listed, but in itself is vapid, anime-lite, almost of no serious possible consequence save the eventual fates, and the rather unwise collateral damage ( yet without any innocent civilian deaths as would have occurred ) - and is barely within the first 30 minutes ! And it's practically unwatchable from there, made no better with the ensuing deluge of pomposity and the forced quasi grown-up soap opera episode. And Superman simply punches himself out of the fricking grave - with nary a scar or an explanation and with all the costume intact. Did this guy even went through the morgue ? Singer's bloated gay Superman went through a general hospital !!! He wouldn’t have deserved any sort of treatment. The dumb tool chose to crash the monstrocity INTO METROPOLIS soon as taking him to the ionosphere. Not even the sun, or a barren, open desert. He had to go and let his heroism wreck human city into pieces, and let its denizens stand and watch within dangerous striking distance. Yet what’s the point in ragging on THAT , anyway? This was disappointingly mediocre, middle of the road stuff from the Bruce Timm crowd, and arguably their most anemic, soul-sucking, Superman cartoon o' theirs since that bland pilot episode, and worse. Nothing, in fact, considering the indefensible actions and portrayal, has made me personally hate the non-comics Superman since " Superman Returns ". Damn it.

  • pressed enter by accident. the geeks made the show. sam was so brilliant, absolutely sensational, as was bill. that bit with coach fredericks and his mum, the phone call and bill's mug were brilliant. and also, lets not fotget the chief reason why freaks and geeks is so revered. it was one of the first appearances in the industry for a young go-getter by the name of shia labeouf. that apatow, he was ahead of the curve.

Is that really why Freaks and Geeks is so revered? I don't think it was for that reason. F&G has its own merit than just featuring a young Shia.

    Freaks, Geeks

    by the brains

Lasting only one season has helped its reputation, but maybe it's good that it ended then. I personally didn't mind. I mean, it said a lot in its one season. It could've turned into more of a soap opera if it continued, with making up and breaking up going on. But I enjoyed it when it was on TV and haven't seen it since then. I do want to check it out again though. It wasn't perfect, but it was full of nice little vignettes and memorable moments.

    Freaks and Geeks Yearbook Query

    by guy scissorhands

Did I get the only backwards bound Yearbook? Ha I'm not sure if its supposed to be like that, but upon opening the front with the McKinley High Crest, you see the writing all over the place like it should be but the internal bounding seems backwards. I found it quite hilarious, gave it something extra. Unless they're all like that?

    The Criterion BLACK NARCISSUS

    by flyingtoupee

The Criterion BLACK NARCISSUS, besides being Standard Def, comes from an older master. It just doesn't hold up that well on big screen televisions. If you want a quality version of just the movie, the BD import is the way to go. Of course, patience is a virtue, and if you hold out, Criterion will probably release the newer master on BD with all of their outstanding extra features.
