GHOSTBUSTERS!! GEEKS!! COLBERT!! SNL!! 24!! PANTHER!! Pre-Black Friday Bargains!! HercVault!!
I am – Hercules!!

“The Real Ghostbusters,” the 1986-1991 animated TV series that served as a sequel to the 1984 movie, had to use “Real” in its title because Filmmation owned an old, unrelated Saturday-morning kid show by the same title.
The series continued two years beyond “Ghostbusters II,” chalking up 134 half-hour episodes and another six and a half hours of its “Slimer!” spin-off series (all included here).
Harold Ramis didn’t write the scripts, and Bill Murray didn’t play Peter Venkman, and Egon was blonde, but at least somebody was willing to pony up for the Ray Parker song.
The new box set is a pricey ($179.99) but handsome affair, replete with a lenticular-endowed package fashioned after the Ghostbusters’ firehouse HQ, emobossed metal cases for each of the series’ five volumes, and a staggering 12 hours of bonus features.
Per the set’s website, extras include:
- The original promotional pilot for The Real Ghostbusters, NEVER BEFORE AIRED
- 21 on-camera commentary tracks with producers, voice actors, writers, animators and production personnel
- 5 exclusive documentaries
- 86 episode introductions
- 16-page booklets include episode synopses, trivia and art for every episode!
- Plus scripts, storyboards, image galleries, music & effects audio tracks, and much more!
- Interviews with J. Michael Straczynski (Writer & Story Editor), Maurice LaMarche (Voice of "Egon Spengler"), Laura Summer (Voice of First "Janine Melnitz"), Kath Soucie (Voice of Second "Janine Melnitz") and many others
The 86 very brief episode introductions are real headscratchers. Each is typically somebody on videotape saying, “Hi, I’m John Doe. I co-wrote this episode. I hope you enjoy it.”
The on-camera commentary tracks are better. I learned the production didn’t know at first at Slimer would be the crew’s sidekick in the series, which is why he appears more menacing in the earliest promotional materials.
For those curious, the dialogue-free four-minute promotional pilot is essentially an animated music video for the Parker song.

Freaks And Geeks: Yearbook Edition
is the spectacular “regular” edition with two bonus DVDs containing cast auditions, deleted scenes, a table read, behind-the-scenes footage, NBC promos, the Museum of Television & Radio panel, and “Mr. Russo Live in Concert.”
If you never heard of the show, it was the first collaboration pairing “40-Year-Old Virgin” writer-director Judd Apatow with Seth Rogen (“Knocked Up”), James Franco (“Pineapple Express”), Jason Segal (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) and Linda Cardellini (“ER”). It was brilliant and hilarious. Watch it already.

"A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All!" a special featuring songs composed by Broadway’s “Cry Baby” team of Adam Schlesinger (of Fountains of Wayne fame) and “Daily Show” executive producer David Javerbaum, aired Sunday on Comedy Central and hits DVD
today.
The high-concept premise: Stephen Colbert, snowed in at his Upstate New York cabin passes the time with Jon Stewart and guest musicians.
Songs and performers:
* "Another Christmas Song," Colbert
* "Have I Got a Present for You," Toby Keith
* "Little Dealer Boy," Colbert and Willie Nelson
* "Hanukkah," Colbert and Jon Stewart
* "Nutmeg," Colbert and John Legend
* "Please Be Patient," Feist
* "There Are Much Worse Things to Believe In," Colbert and Elvis Costello
* "(What's So Funny 'bout) Peace, Love And Understanding," everybody

Also making the transition from Sunday-night special to DVD is “24: Redemption.”
Why pay $15.99 for something you just saw on Sunday? Extras include:
• Extended Edition "Creator’s Cut" featuring over ten minutes of never-before-seen footage (not shown in the television broadcast version)
• Behind-the-scenes "Making Of" documentary
• Children of War featurette
• Cast / Crew Commentary
• "24" Season 6 in Four Minutes featurette
• Season 7 Sneak Peek – First 16 minutes of the premiere episode

Just to lend a little context, Torchy The Battery Boy
was the second puppet series produced by Gerry Anderson, after “The Adventures of Twizzle” and before “Supercar,” “Fireball XL5,” “Stingray,” “Thunderbirds,” “Captain Scarlet,” “Joe 90,” “UFO” and “Space: 1999.” It was about a boy who was also a flashlight. (They call flashlights “torches” over there in the United Kingdom).

No review of Mantis?
-
I WANT that RGB boxset bad.....
-
The only one I can remember was when they were trapped inside the containment thing in the basement. What a good show.
-
I mean it sounds like they put everything they could think of in it which is what you should do on dvds. Sounds way better then what Disney does with it's Disney Afternoon shows which is pretty much nothing extra at all. I also remember the "fake" Ghostbusters. Was that older then the movie or something?? I thought it was a rip off.
-
That's amazing that they added those. Ha ha. I recall Frank Welker said Slimer was his favorite voice. It is pretty unique, even for him.
-
Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle, the creators of Kim Possible, whichs 2nd season just came out on DVD in Germany. :)
-
Christmas could be great, if only I could get the rest of a certain little series about a certain little vegetarian vampire duck. Oh well.
I wouldn't kick that Real Ghostbusters set out of bed, if you know what I mean. Looks limber. -

I can't even tell you how long I've been waiting for this set...
by iamnicksaicnsn
So expensive... but so worth it! The Real Ghostbusters was one of the most well-written and in-depth shows of all children's television. Yes, there were some corny episodes, but some were so sadistic and bizarre that it lived up to everything the movie ever touched upon. If only Ghostbusters 3 is this good, or at least the video-game is.
-
why are so fucking obsessed with Kim Possible?
-
Because it's a fucking good cartoon that never gets the recognition that it deserves. (Probably because everybody hates the Disney Channel and unfortunately they are right.) And I got no idea why AICN thinks that Script Girl, Hannah Montana and Reality Shows are worth mentioning, but pretend that a show that was created by the writers of Sky High, directed in its first season by Chris Bailey (Major Damage, Clerks - The Cartoon) and the other seasons by Steve Loter (who was even featured in the Bonus Features of the last Blade Runner DVD) and has a voice cast that includes Gary Cole, John DiMaggio, Ricardo Montalban, Patton Oswalt, Nestor Carbonell, Jean Smart and guest stars like John C. McGinley, Christopher McDonald, George Takei, R. Lee Ermey or Brian Posehn gets ignored.
It's out on DVD, I know lots of people who would like to have it but haven't heard of its release, so I walk around and tell people about it for a while. Don't worry, Season 3 isn't announced so far, so that I will talk much less about it for a while soon. :) -
Whatever. I'm hungry.
-
In the UK (and other regions) the Tales From The Darkside episodes were padded out to fit schedules with fewer ad breaks than US by having introductions by Patrick MacNee. He basically sat there and spoke nonsense for 5 minutes, clearly making it up as he went along. They were priceless. Unlikely they'll be on the discs though.
-
Looks like Herc missed that one. Do you ever get the impression that deep down, Herc realizes that the stuff Supernatural writers write down on napkins at lunchtime are far more brilliant than anything Joss Whedon ever came up with? I'm sensing some denial here.
-
...as a cartoon; it's too bad Ghostbusters II played out like a live version of this.
-

The Real Ghostbusters spoiled Citizen Kane for me at age 11...
by wharpua
I suppose it's common for people to find out what Rosebud is before actually seeing the film, but I did feel cheated to have the central mystery of a cinema classic ruined for me by an afternoon kids' cartoon.
I did enjoy the series, though. -
Go to BJ's Wholesale Club and get 'em for $16.99 a piece any day!
-
I remember watching Citizen Kane for the first time and thinking: "Wasn't there an episode of Ghostbusters?" This show was also my first introduction to Cthulu!
-
Look at Apollo checking out dem tits!
-
they probably nabbed the rights before anyone else but dont worry, it'll come in stores in about a year or two. this happened with Get Smart, TimeLife released it as an online exclusive and that was around 1 or 2yrs ago but now its coming out in regular stores soon if it hasnt already.
-
search your heart, you know this to be true
-
...but, how in the fuck can they justify charging $119 for a series that only lasted one season? I don't care what extras it comes with - that's too fucking much money.
-
I always remember the Star Trek episode of Real Ghostbusters where they have to bust on a space station - awesome
-
As Herc points out Bill Murray didn't do the voice of Peter in the cartoon, but in fact there's a great "circle of character life" here. Bill Murray plays Venkman in GB film, Lorenzo Music plays Venkman in GB cartoon, Lorenzo Music plays Garfield in GF cartoon, Bill Murray plays Garfield in GF movie. Has anyone seen Murray and Music in the same place at the same time?!
-
There was an episode called the Call of Cthulu. Any real fan knew that already.
-
is my second-favorite tv/movie trivia next to knowing that Madonna's "Lucky Star" was re-tooled for use in RotJ by The Max Rebo Band at Jabba's palace.
-
...that Madonna / Lucky Star / Rebo connection was neutered in the Special Edition version of RotJ. It's in the original.

Colbert looks just like Bob J.R. Dobbs in that picture
by crimson dynamo
Rufferto - before the 1984 GB there was a live action Ghost Busters Saturday morning show by Filmation with Larry Storch and Forrest Tucker from F-Troop, who busted ghosts with their pet gorilla. I can vaguely recall one where Ted Knight was ghost in a castle.
-
from RGB was an episode where they catch some weird disease in some other dimension that caused these horrible lumps to crawl all over their skin. Disturbed the shit out of me!
-
$41.99 - $17.99 = $24 off24 is 57% of 41.99.However, if the $41.99 is the savings and not the regular price (which would be $41.99 + $17.99 = $59.98), then, yes, a price of $17.99 makes The West Wing 70% off.

The Real Ghostbusters is the greatest animated show ever made
by ad_skinner
And I don't say that lightly. The writing is unbelievable for a kids show, it's one of the few cartoons that seriously stands up to scrutiny as an adult, some of the funniest, wittiest dialogue I've ever heard is from this show. I've already got my box set ordered, to hell with the expense, RGB is just too damn good.
-
Since they're one film short, they should call it that, then they can have the alliteration in it's title, using all the "P"s.
-
...I remember the one where the guy had that flute and he was playing a melody that was unmaking creation. Totally awesome. Plus, those of you mentioning C'thulu, I belive there was a small reference to some of the Lovecraftian mythos at some point. I do know that they faced off against Samhainn (or Samm Hain, etc) quite often and I loved it...have to check that out...And when the hell is SFU coming out on Blu??!?!?! I'm dying to get em but wanna wait for blu!
-
I'm afraid your price estimates are WAY off! the six seasons of 24 is 199.99- which is as seen on the link you gave. Smallevilles series all together is an unaffordable 239.99!!! This is not a big deal. and I will continue to buy my series one at a time as money allows.
-
Holy shit, I've been waiting for this my whole life. I grew up on that cartoon... watched it every Saturday morning. In college I managed to download a few episodes off of IRC. There's a really great episode where theres this old dude who's trying to send his wealth into the spirit world when he dies, but the process is also sending a shitload of ghosts into our world. Another great was an episode called "Standing Room Only" where ghosts were coming to the ghostbusters to get put away, because there was this legendary ghost eating ghost called Mee-Krah (yeah, like the worst word ever on that South Park episode!) that turns up every few thousand years to wreak havoc. Turned out that it was responsible for creating a few deserts like the Gobi or some shit.
I need to get my hands on this box set... this might be a great Christmas gift to myself. There's not much else I want this year. -
Nov 25, 2008 12:31:06 PM CST
There wasn't just a small mention of the Lovecraftian mythos.
by derlanghaarige
Cthulu appeared in one episode as gigantic red squid monster behind a rollercoster and the Ghostbusters stopped him from destroying the fucking world! (Or something like that. They stopped him.)
The Real Ghostbusters was also the first time that I heard about Ragnarok. Yes, the animation may be dated and it's a shame that the characters don't look or sound like in the movies, but watching it 20 years later and being surprised by all the way-too-fucked-up-for-kids-TV- references is seriously worth it! -
That show was...wait, I don't even remember. Wasn't that show with the crippled man that has a MANTIS suit, that...does stuff... wow it left quite an impression.
-
in hopes of seeing a Ghostbusters box set. Now I don't have to read this anymore. Looks like Christmas is coming early to my house....
Since we're sharing favorite RGB moments, I always loved the episode where they captured the spirits from Charles Dicken's "A Christmas Carol," and either Peter or Ray had to recreate the ghosts for Scrooge while the other Ghostbusters hunted down the Christmas ghosts in the containment field.
What particularly sticks out to me from that episode was Scrooge beeing run around in a wheelchair with a Viewmaster taped to his head as he was being "whisked through his past."... Fucking brilliant writing. -
Wasn't alot of the Real ghostbusters cartoon series written or produced by J Michael Strasczinski, not long before he made Babylon 5? So there was some quality writing going on there. In many ways moreso then there was for teh second movie.
-
I remember cartoon Peter Venkman complaining that the movie version of him looked nothing like him.
Also, remember how Janine's look changed over time throughout the show? They had an episode in the later seasons that explained that as well, it was like she was going to some kind of mystical creature and getting her body modified to improve her looks. Weirdly, I always thought the early Janine was sexier.
And yeah... there were some episodes that were FUCKED UP. Remember the one with the door in the subway that said "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL DOOMSDAY", and there was this train full of passengers that got ghoulified, killing everyone on the train and turning them into spirits or zombies or something... The Ghostbusters set their packs to overload to seal the doorway. The Boogieman episodes were outta control... I think I remember that both the Boogieman and Sandman had the same voice.
The show also had an awesome soundtrack. -
I had to download the series from a dodgy torrents site :S loved every minute of that show, and would love to have it as a permanenet fixture in my dvd collection-but cos I live in Britain I cant cos they havent got round to releasing it yet! Fair enough they might assume that because the show didnt air here (except on network 2 in Ireland, where it got a decent bit of attention) it might not be of interest-but you would think with the Rogen/Apatow wave of films washing over the world, ONE guy in the industry might attempt to sell it on the back of Knocked Up/Pineapple Express et al. At that, why hasnt any English station picked up it and aired it yet? As I said, with Rogen a star these days there would be an instant fanbase....is it just laziness? They pulled the same crap with Wonderfalls (I have to cling on to my rickety taped off tv version) and the second series of Twin Peaks (which I had to import from the Netherlands for Christs sake!)...yeah, I know, at least I saw them, but it just mystifys me why they arent at least TRYING to sell them on dvd over here-I want answers!
-
huh? how did I not know about this?
-

You know what?Screw Ghostbusters 3!Make a new cartoon show!
by derlanghaarige
Ignore Extreme Ghostbusters (although this wasn't THAT bad), make a cartoon show about the old and fat Ghostbusters (just like they would be now) and try to get some talented writers. (maybe some comic book guys, even if this is not necessarily a seal of quality.) Make it funny but spooky and reference everything from the boogeyman, to Lovecraft and maybe even the fucking Bible, man! And maybe you could even get this time at least one or two of the original actors for the voice work. (I don't wanna sound mean, but Aykroyd may be available!)
-
I thought it wasn't that bad. Would like to see those on dvd, if not out already. I always loved the intro music (and no, Will Smith didn't do it).
-
Anyone know if it's Lorenzo Music doing Peter's voice on these DVDs? Seriously, as HUGE a fan as I was, if it's Dave "My career sucks more than Bob Saget" Coulier doing Peter's voice, I ain't going to buy this set. And I'm that guy who has all the episodes on my old VHS tapes. And also, is Arsenio Hall doing Winston's voice? Anyone? Dave Coulier, if you're reading this, leave entertainmentland forever.
-
sorry to disappoint but you get both actors. Lorenzo did it for a few seasons (not sure how many) but then Dave did it til the show ended. Same for Arsenio, he did the voice a certain amount of seasons until someone else took over. Slimer was Frank all the way though. :P
-
Didn't he?
-
. . . Coulier took over Venkman's voice in 1987. Music passed in 2001. R.I.P.
-
for the two parter in extreme ghostbusters? it was really awesome. to see that done I don' think there has even been a cartoon that did that before.
-
I watched it all the time. But i remember thunder cats being awesome too. But when i see it now i am like how the hell did i watch this show.
-
But she was hotter in the original, sarcastic version. When they changed her voice and glasses, she was a lot less sexy.
-
It was what the sequel should have been!
-
We have similar tastes. Old school Janine all the way... man she could get it!
-
Yes, it does hold up as an adult viewer. I watched some bootlegs a year ago and thought it was still a great show. Be warned though, that it does have a painfully obvious "sharkjump" when Lorenzo Music was fired and replaced by Dave "You Oughta Know" Coulier. The original actress for Janine was also fired at this point (the network wanted a more "wholesome and motherly" Janine) and JMS subsequently quit. So be aware that when you get to the episodes with Coulier, it turns into run-of-the-mill Saturday morning schlock.
-
I liked the show when I was a kid, but I have to wonder who is going to pay that much for it.
-
I'm still holding out hope that one day I'll own Parker Lewis Can't Lose on dvd(or Blu-Ray).
-
so those two hours have more than 120 minutes in them?
-
I kept trying to tell you guys about the RGB sets in several of these talkbacks a while back, and nobody listened or responded. Got mine today.
Testing paragraph thing. -
The part you guys left out about the Garfield/RGB voice thing is that Murray was supposedly unhappy that Music didn't sound like him, leading to him being replaced by Coulier. Stew on that for a minute.
-
Was flipping through the book that comes with the set (there is a small blurb and a couple of pieces of trivia about every episode) and saw a picture of one of the episodes in which the enemies are clearly supposed to be terrifying ghost versions of the Simpsons. Pretty creepy.
-
i dont see how thats a lot. you get 7 seasons and around 12hrs of extras. most tv shows barely have any extras unless they're called Lost and that one is a about 2yrs away from a complete series collection. But yeah, its an expected price...That 70s Show has 8 seasons and charges around the same but since this is an "online only" offer at the moment, it makes sense its a little higher. considering you'd pay around 25-30 dollars per season if it was released individually, its a pretty damn good deal. The amazing thing is that its the same price in Canada and the US, granted the exchange rate changes things but we in Canada usually always have a higher retail price.
-
That is who they think will spend $180 --
-
Eat it, suckas! (yes, I have no life) ... where is the next Transformers talkback to give my pathetic existence meaning?
-
Was the episode where a group of Vampires were keeping an entire village held prisoner but at the end when the Ghostbusters free them it's revealed they are actually Werewolfs and a HUGE Vampire vs Werewolf war breaks out. Vampires are biting Werewolfs and werewolfs are biting Vampires and creating Vampire/Werewolfs. And the Ghostbusters are just like FUCK this and they just LEAVE. And that was the end of the episode, and I thought it was brilliant
-
so why does everyone insist it is pure genius? I watched four eps back when it was first on, and thats all I could stomach. Looking back, it's cool to see so many future big names on the small screen, but there are lots of old shows that share that particular charm and are much more interesting to watch. Maybe I was still pining for My So Called Life, but I could never get attached to any of the characters, and don't remember laughing once, making it pretty pointless as a comedy. Now I'm not meaning to detract from anyone's enjoyment of the show, I just don't get why so many rave about it's genius.
-
and costs less then half as much.
Nuff said. -
. . . couldn't disagree more. And your "pining" for My So Called Life sure as hell isn't helping you out. Pining?

The late Lorenzo Music took over for Bill Murray as the voice of Venkman on The Real Ghostbusters. Later, when Garfield was first animated, Music provided the voice for the cat's musings. Then when a mostly live-action Garfield movie was made, the voice was provided by none other than Bill Murray.
Coincidence? I think not. -
LOL, I find it hilarious that Lorenzo Music (Garfield) played Bill Murray's cartoon character from Ghostbusters. Years later Bill Murray would play Garfield in the live action movie. I guess some people find their voices to be very alike.

Heh, we had the same thought at the same time. Bravo!

You must be under the age of 35, or you would recognize FREAKS & GEEKS as deadly accurate snapshot of the American school experience in the early '80s, as well as portrait the first generation of modern "geeks" spawned by the original release of STAR WARS. I KNEW all the characters. I knew their problems, I knew their desires. I WAS a character on that show. And it actually managed to add a good deal levity to school experiences that didn't seem so funny when they were actually happening to ME. That series was so dead-on that watching it was actually cathartic for me. Maybe that's what MY SO CALLED LIFE was like for you. But, I think you wouldn't shoot down FREAKS & GEEKS if you'd really been there. That said, I can't imagine how they can justify the amount of money they're charging for the repackage. Even the sale price of $67 is pretty damned steep.

Buy it

The answer to that there are no R2 release off Freaks and Geeks is the music rights! If you have seen it you know it is loaded with '80's music. The only way they could release it will all the original songs from the tv-series was to get the rights only for US and Canada. I was a member of the F&G site back then and you could only buy this version if you had an adress in North America. I guess it is also the reason for the steep price. The original version is still $55. Get a region free player! Or don't they make those any more? That's why I still haven't gone BD. I want to buy Bluray from the US as well.

All 51 of them! Check your attics folks!

Meant to say ...but the RGB set looks freakishly awesome. But still... Ed Grimley plz?
-
Don't blame him. She's looking slutty hot on that BATTLESTAR GALACTICA cover.
-
cheers man, I didnt know that! I might just fork out for the multi region player right enough-I was advised to do it ages ago(by someone who now has the freaks and geeks boxset to boot) but just got stubborn.Although now the mystery is in the second series of Twin Peaks not getting an English release...its on region 2 (and I managed to get an import)but you cant just buy it at the shops here. Its the principle of it Im more annoyed by!
-
on the season 3 DVD he's checking out Six's rack.

Disney owns the rights to X-Men & Spider-Man because they bought Saban. And Disney are bastards.

This is major news. BBC are updating the classic Scifi horror novel The day of the Triffids. Its to air next year over two nights on the bbc and is being filmed in HDTV. Its being written by ER and Law and order stalwart Patrick Harbison. Its set 2011. and the story goes something like this. The story, based on the 1951 novel by John Wyndham, sees the Earth using fictional plants called Triffids as an alternative to fossil fuels. However, the plants escape and begin a campaign of terror.
-
I heard that Fox is dropping its Saturday morning cartoons in favour of infomercials.
-
I'll say the plants escaped
-

at least learn how to proofread. Looking at the Black Friday Bargains, how can House be 77% off and 30 Rock be 72% off when both are listed as $31.99, sale price $13.99? That's a 5% difference for two products which seemingly were, and now are, selling at the same price.By the way, to figure out the % off you take last week's price, subtract the sale price, then divide the difference by last week's price. For example, House:$31.99 - $13.99 = $18 Savings$18/$31.99 = 56% Off!
