kinda says it all.... The skies have no limit with our new destinations launching January 21st, 2009. Take an adventure anywhere around the globe and reimagine your world as big as ours. Check back often to discover new ways to get lost in the world.
No Borders, Now Boarding - Ajira Airways.
It's a Friday night and I have a life, kind of, no time to explore this. Save it for Sunday. Also Lost is losing some momentum with their absence as in the "old days" I would be all over a clue like this. Nothing lasts forever I guess.

The fact that are always thinking and including these interesting things and making the experience so engaging and fun makes it worthy of the devotion people like me have to the show. I don't need the answers right away, like some people who can't be patient enough to be told a story from beginning to end. The level of intrigue and attention to detail is just fantastic.

This is my personal opinion, but I always saw Lost as a morality tale. Stick people on an Island, see what they can do. That's why I liked S1, because even when it got weird it felt human. Then they introduce Dharma and Ben. The problem there is that introducing technology makes it less a morality tale and more one of those science-fiction, epic mythology shows. Which is cool, but that's not Lost. And it's amplified by Ben. Notice how the show has bent over backwards (in 320 and 409) to posit that Ben isn't such a bad guy. He was responsible for genocide in 320 (because his Daddy treated him bad), but in S4 they change that and allude to it being someone else's doing. He didn't always lead The Others. It bugs me because the show doesn't make excuses for the actions of everyone else - the themes of redemption are such that while characters on Lost (who aren't Ben) do bad things, they're at least recognisable. Michael is an example of this - he gets a raw deal, he can have his son if he kills Ana-Lucia. I don't love that plotline, but it's definitively human and painful because that's his fucking son... but with Ben they seem to want the charismatic villain AND the anti-hero, and it pisses me off. The guy suffers less and less consequence for his actions, leading up to 411 where they, and I could not believe this, have Hurley OFFER Ben a FUCKING TRUCE OF FRIENDSHIP? There was no logic behind that except the writers wanting to keep Emerson onboard. And I think the guy can act, but no... that's not fitting with what Lost started out as.

    by tallboy66

Moneen's "Don't Ever Tell Locke What He Can't Do" (duh, just look at the title), Amberlin's "*fin" (lyric goes: "All we are Lost are you." There's a youtube mash-up video out there), and Foo Fighter's "The Pretender" (Just because it's kind of sweet). As for this tune, it was okay but kind of generic. Sure these guys will have a long and properous musical career like the guys who did the theme song from Friends, Smallville (I saw them open for Zwan once!), and Enterprise.

I get what you're saying but I think it's a mistake to use S1 as the standard. I think with any TV series, you have to allow the show to evolve, but particularly with Lost, it was explicit in the text of the show that this was a mystery; what you think is happening may not in fact be happening. By that measure, I would argue that the first season wouldn't be my first stop when it comes to defining what the show is about.

I LOVE the fact that he's an antagonist AND an anti-hero. Maybe that kind of shades-of-gray characterization doesn't sit well with you, but I think it's brilliant. I might have more problem with it if Ben was the only antagonist on the show, but he's obviously not. Ben's the lesser of two evils. And if you like the show as a morality tale, how can you dislike Ben? He's the definition of a moral conundrum! It's not like he's unaware of how his douchey actions have caused negative consequences. But he does it anyway because of a belief in the "greater good". And what's better, he often reacts emotionally and fucks up, like a well-written character should. I liked the first season a lot, but I don't think the show was truly GREAT until Ben showed up. But like you, that's just my opinion. I acknowledge that I'm a bit of a Ben fanatic. It helps that Emerson is the cat's fuckin pajamas.

I agree Emerson is a great actor, but he's still on the show because of that - not because he logically fits into the piece. Ask yourself this, why do the Losties keep him around considering how many times he tricks them?

Ben is one of the best characters in Lost

I like to think of him as The Devil; weaving through the lives of those in Lost making little deals and tearing away peoples' souls.I can't think of another character on television that i both hate as a person and yet love seeing on screen.

necgray and other general Ben Linus musings...

    by ribbons

...I have to say, it bothers me how almost everybody I talk to about the episode where Alex is killed seems to think that Ben brought his daughter's death on himself because of some sort of smugness or arrogance (which, granted, is only a handful of people). He was in a pretty impossible situation if you think about it, and I actually think that was one of the few instances where he tried to do the right thing. I love how terrified Emerson sounds when he says "I'm not coming out of this house" because you can tell that he IS afraid of the consequences. But anyway, I actually think Ben represents a part of the show that was prominent in season 1, which is moral relativism. The whole point of the flashback conceit and '-centric' episodes, it seems to me, was to make us understand everybody's perspective.

Morality, as you point out, is a huge part of the grand tapestry of Lost. But as RIbbons has pointed out, moral relativism has been inherent with the fabric of the show since the second episode, where we find out that our heroine (Kate) is actually an escaped convict. Lost is the quintessential example of the postmodern characteristic of the "neo-golden age" of television. All the qualities we love about current tv has to do with moral ambiguity and the grey area of good and evil. Even in film, we have 'No Country', 'There Will Be Blood' and most recently 'The Dark Knight'. This has been the dominant discourse of pop culture for the past decade. I will, however, include that this discourse is starting to change. I want to see some happy endings for godsakes.

I understand that, but... in 320 Ben kills a group of people. It's an act of genocide. Then in S4, he alludes that he didn't. They intended Ben to be that evil, then decided he wasn't - but the problem is, to me, that's a cop-out. You can't have it both ways, if he's capable of that then he needs to face some consequence for it. It's not morally ambiguous if the writers keep retconning what he's capable of.

    Personally...

    by ribbons

...well, for one thing I never thought that Ben masterminded the "Purge" of the Dharma Initiative. I don't know if the writers did or wanted us to think he did, but I got the sense that he still answered to Richard (or someone, at least) at that point. Which isn't meant to detract from all the other things he's done, but again, part of the storytelling structure of the show is to peel back layers of a character in order to make them seem more human to the audience. With Ben I do think the writers are aware that he's already done too much to be completely absolved, and by the time the show is over he'll probably end up being killed or whatever, but I think most of the characters in the show sort of act in their own interests. They're not always as extreme as Michael shooting Ana-Lucia or Ben stabbing Keamy, but the point is that they're not just performing a morality play; how we look at them depends on the situation. And personally, it creeped me out when the show started talking about "good guys" and "bad guys" at the end of season 2, so I'm glad that it sort of moved away from that.

Good points. I don't want it to be good vs. bad completely, but I think moral ambiguity has to be based in logic. Remember that we see Ben's flashbacks, but Hurley doesn't... so why would he bond with Ben?

I sort of understand that. But I was amazed Charlie got ONE episode of people mourning for him. Then again, Shannon mourned Boone from 120 to 206, so there's precedent for actually factoring it in.

Horrible mainstream Christian Rock! Plus, it looked like one of those crappy home-made youtube vids that keep cropping up, where some yahoo compiles clips from something cool, like Battlestar Galactica, and soundtracks it to something lame and inapropriate, like their favorite Maroon 5 tune, or 'Glorious' by Andreas Johnson.

billypilgrimisunstuck mentioned There Will Be Blood, and it occurred to me that as of right now, it's the final word on the culture of the Bush II administration. Not to bring politics into it but now that the financial world is all fucked up it just seems to really have presaged the end of an era. I feel like America in the Bush mold is a lot like Plainview at the end there, "I'm finished".Hopefully the sequel will be better!

    Ben

    by 4we8have15to16go23back42

I seem to remember that in Season 1 that Jin, Sawyer & Locke were all thought to be the myteriously bad guys just like Ben is. But the more that we found out about them in later episodes the more good they looked. Ben has gone through a lot of redemption just like them like Alex being shot and getting beat up a lot. we have also learned about his childhood. Sure theres still a lot of redemption to make for him, but his always trying to do whatever it takes for the greater good in his mind is a lot like Locke. Who knows maybe part of Ben's redemption is also being kicked off the island?

As for Hurley I think that like someone said before, he's just that way. He's easy going Hurley.

Hip, young viewers like JJ Binks are totally into the freshest television programs that all the coolest people watch. You nerds are pathetic. You should see the awesome viewing parties where all the dashing, popular people like JJ get together and watch TV. So glamorous and cutting edge. No old, boring, ancient fuddy-duddy shit like Lost. No. A fifth season? The hippest TV viewers watch half a season of any given show, max. I just can't believe people can look themselves in the mirror and call themselves TV show watchers after any longer than that.

Pure and simple. I could tell him that this is just a TB for a Lost trailer and not an episode and that those still smash a Heroes episdoe TB to bits. I could tell him that this is the third Lost TB in a week and that that might effect the number of posts. I could tell him that the Season FOUR finale TB is still relatively active and hits the top ten occassionally. I could tell him all those things, but it wouldn't change the fact that he's still just a pathetic little asshole of Heroes worshipping troll who's pissed becasue his show is a pitiful abomination.
